on "abc7 news," santa clara's time to shine. we're at the community celebration in anticipation of tomorrow's big game. super bowl visitors caught off guard at sfo by a group of protesters. and a final push for republicans before their next debate tonight. >> live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." ♪ bands, fans, and star-studded super bowl excitement. the action super bowl host city throws a big party before the big game. welcome to this early edition of "abc7 news" at 5:00, due to the gop debate. we begin with super bowl buzz reaching a fever pitch. in the middle of it all, cornell bernard in santa clara. cornell, you ran into some big names out there.

>> reporter: yeah, eric. this weekend you never know who you're going to run into. this free community party just getting started. fireworks and a huey lewis concert tonight. earlier, a celebrity football game where we got some super bowl picks from nfl stars. ♪ there's only one way to get ready for super bowl. have a super community celebration. >> i just wanted to do anything and everything that had to do with the super bowl. >> reporter: jessica from san jose couldn't miss this extreme fan fest. music, food, and football. >> i know there's going to be celebrities, so this is fun. >> reporter: celebs like rapper lewd chris. >> charlotte all day. >> reporter: nfl legend doug flutie was quarterback for the

red team. what do you like in super bowl tomorrow? >> you've got to go with carolina if you're picking a team. but i'm rooting for peyton to play well. >> reporter: washington quarterback curt cousins is playing for blue. >> my heart says the broncos, but the panthers were probably the most dominant team this year. >> reporter: and john taylor was signing autographs. he played in three super bowls. his advice -- >> don't make no crazy mistakes. just be prepared for it. >> reporter: in the end, this smaller, friendly game boss close. the red team won 49-48. you're looking live at the visa everywhere camera overlooking super bowl city. all the entrances are now closed, because the event has reached maximum capacity.

"abc7 news" was at super bowl city checking out the sights and sounds of super bowl city earlier this afternoon. we found broncos' fans, panthers' fans and people just looking to have some fun. >> manning all the way. >> we're going to watch it locally. >> in is such a great time. i love it. >> everybody's happy, having a good time. >> police closed the entrances to super bowl city when the crowd sweld during last night's one republic concert. ed a vision to super bowl city is free. "abc7 news" was also there as member of the raider nation showed their pride inside moscone center. thousands paid to visit the nfl experience. it runs through tomorrow afternoon. new video shows the crowds at the embarcadero next to super bowl city. it's taken two hours for some to

board trains. some trains are running late because of the extra riders and the golden gate transit ferry will add an extra boat at 9:30 this evening. vendors at the ferry building are disappointed. in fact, some regulars say they've never seen it as empty as it was today. tiffany wilson has that story. ♪ >> reporter: pomp and circumstance and prediction. >> i predict panthers winning it. >> reporter: the mood is palpable in super bowl city. >> i think the city is really shining. no other place in the world can shine like san francisco. >> reporter: it's tale of two sides of the same street. the big crowds over at super bowl city have not yet translated to long lines at the ferry building farmer's market. >> it seems like there's a barrier. >> it's empty, empty.

>> reporter: for the second week in a row, vendors say their regulars are staying home. >> we're hoping that even though our regular traffic doesn't come down, we'll get an uptick from the visitors. >> a lot of themed things to encourage people to support our business. >> we feel like it's going to help our business, because it brings so many people into the city. >> reporter: and if a sample turns into a sale, consider it a victory for the vendors. tiffany wilson, "abc7 news." and there are a lot of big events in the bay area tonight, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., the nfl honors ceremony will be held at the civic auditorium, recognizing the nfl's best players. there are street closures in that area. at 6:00 tonight, it's a taste of

the nfl, featuring third eye blind. metallica performs at at&t park tonight at 7:00 p.m. alicia keys takes the stage at 8:30 at super bowl city. a presuper bowl concert featuring run-dmc and the red hot chili peppers by invitation only. and in oakland, the warriors playing, game time at 8:00 p.m. protesters went to sfo today to greet football fans traveling into the town. demonstrators marched around the international and domestic terminals today. every few feet, they stopped to read the names of police who died in police shootings between 2001 and 2015. >> people stream in here to watch this football game, police departments in san francisco are murdering black and brown people

in 20 minutes, the republican candidates for president will debate right here on abc 7. it comes three days before the critical primary vote in new hampshire. abc news reporter marci gonzalez is there. >> reporter: the stage is set for what's expected to be a slugfest. republican presidential candidates out stumping today. >> what we have to do is save the country. >> reporter: before facing off for the new hampshire primaries. >> on that stage tonight, you're going see a difference. you're going to see a difference between those prepared to lead and those just continuing to talk. >> reporter: the latest poll showing donald trump with a 19-point lead followed by marco rubio. the target on his back getting bigger. >> he's being to break his word to the voters and make deals

with democrats to try to force through amnesty. >> reporter: ted cruz supporters out hoping he can push ahead for a repeat of iowa. >> it's a beautiful day in manchester. >> reporter: today, hillary clinton going door to door, too. >> i need your help on tuesday. >> reporter: fighting for momentum as she leads bernie sanders in the latest poll by just two points and behind by double digits here in the granite state. >> if we can bring out a decent vote on tuesday, i am confident we're going to win. him. it began at the rite aid parking lot on east 18th street. leo lopez told police he was the victim of a carjacking. police found the van nearby. it crashed and the driver was dead inside. officers say lopez shot at the man as he was driving away. new details, santa clara university just received 2,000 more doses of meningitis vaccine. students can receive free vaccinations today until 6:00 p.m. at the kennedy commons. and shots monday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. inside the student center. so far more than 41 hundred students have received vaccinations. this followed three classmates being diagnosed with meningitis. ahead, just how much people are spending to watch the super bowl. and a game of a different kind. a chinese new year tradition takes center court in san francisco. looking live outside from

this is "abc7 news." a live look now at the visa everywhere camera over super bowl city. if you had plans to go down there this afternoon, keep in mind it is so packed in there that they've closed off the entrances for now. they're not letting any more people into super bowl city. crowds there who are already in enjoying a sunny day. drinks, chips, hot dogs, even new tvs. americans will shell out big bucks sunday and retailers believe those between 25 and 34 will spend the most of any group, about $140 per person. the national retail federation figures the average american will spend $82 on the game.

ticket prices for super bowl 50 have hit a new high. the latest numbers show the most expensive ticket sold so far was $27,983, over $8,000 more than the priciest ticket to last year's super bowl. the cheapest ticket available, $2700. 10% of buyers are from north carolina. and "abc7 news" was in san francisco's chinatown to see a tradition played out on the hardwood. youth teams celebrated the lunar new year by taking part in the j jamboaree. >> to celebrate the new year and provide friendship and camaraderie. many of the youth that used to come here and play as kids are volunteering as coaches and referees, as well as scorekeepers. >> look at that.

they've been watching steph curry. it is unsafe to get too close to the powerful waves battering our coast from sonoma county to monterey. "abc7 news" was there as the surf pounded the pacifica pier. some waves have crested at ten feet. the national weather service experts dangerous rip currents to last until at least tomorrow. that's where drew comes in to tell us the weather. >> if you're not going to be at the big game, the beach is going to be a popular spot. lots of sunshine and warm temperatures. live doppler 7 hd, it is quiet. we still have that beach hazard through tomorrow, waves could get as high as ten feet. so the rip currents and beach

high pressure anchored off the coast, quiet weather up and down the western seaboard. that's going to be the theme the next couple of days. your day planner today, like today you'll love tomorrow. plenty of sunshine. by 4:00, mild with a lot of spots topping out in the upper 60s to low 70s. then the temperatures for super bowl tomorrow at levi stadium, look at this. 73 degrees by kickoff. plenty of sunshine. have your sun screen ready, because you can burn in this sunshine in less than an hour. temperatures are really going to take off. on monday, records are possible specifically in san jose. forecasted high of 77 degrees, beating the record of 75. the records on tuesday in the low to mid 70s. some of those may fall, as well. wednesday, cooler air works in as we track that chance of rain coming in our way for friday. overnight tonight, plenty of stars and everyone in the 40s. then heights for sunday, in the

enough with super bowl 50. the other big game of the weekend tips off in about an hour at oracle arena as the warriors host the oakland city thunder. thunder own the third best record in the western conference. the flash brothers also seem to rise to the legvel of their competition and you know they will tonight in front of a super bowl celebrity laced crowd. >> it's like a playoff atmosphere.

it is almost every game for us, especially when a good team comes to town, especially with super bowl weekend. we just want to give them a show. >> just high sense of focus and intensity. and the big game was already played, cal and stanford playing off this afternoon. whoever emerged victorious would improve to .500 in the pac 12. stanford sticking around early. malcolm allen the steal and the hoop. cardinal trailed by four. but cal starts to pull away at the half. they're up 16 at the break. second half, all bears. jalen brown to the hoop and one. he had 16. bears by 22. and then the exclamation point. bears win 76-61, the final.

2016 nfl hall of fame inductee also be announced in an hour. many niner players, including myself, say he was the best to ever play for. jerry rice says he'll celebrate as much as mr. d. if he gets in. >> it would be amazing. and a long time coming. it's time, and i think it's going to happen. we just have to wait and see. i have my fingers crossed, but i'll be the first one dancing. terrell owens on the ballot for the first time. he had 15,941 yards receiving, second most to jerry rice and 153 receiving touchdowns. third in the league. the most famous touchdown as a niner in 1998 over the packers. and kenny stabeler also up for induction. this last week, he likely suffered from cte before his death. h snake helped the raiders win
