off duty police officer was killed in his own home. tonight an east bay community is mourning the fallen officer and we are learning about what led up to the violent encounte encounter. good evening and thanks for joining us. >> officer gus vegas was shot inside his home in vallejo. he was a 15 year veteran of the richmond police force. >> alan is live tonight in vallejo. alan? >>reporter: hi. investigators removed yellow crime tape from around officer vegas's home tonight and wasn't long before people came by to honor a man nope as great father figure to his family and his neighbors. 58-year-old richmond police officer gus vegas was well respected by his neighbors. >> gus was as awe thencly a great human being as you are ever going to come across. >>reporter: officer vegas shot and killed in his vallejo home around 4:30 am. it happened after an altercation involving his daughter, her 6-year-old son

and the boy's father who had a gun. >> the suspect who was identified as robert vega, 30 years old, fairfield, was fled the scene with the grandson. >>reporter: police tracked vega to his apartment in fairfield where he gave up and turned over his son without incident. his neighbors were shocked to hear he was arrested for murder. >> every time that i have always seen him, he's always been a good dad. >>reporter: vallejo neighbors were equally stunned. they say robert vega car was of times parked at officer vegas's home. >> i think they all had a great relationship. i think something must have just went really sour. >>reporter: the flag were his lowered to half staff at richmond police headquarters where fellow officers were speechless. >> we are still just in shock. honestly i am not 100 percent, i'm not sure yet. >> officer vegas and his wife had 10 children and 20 grandchildren. in vallejo alan wong abc 7 new

it has been the most trying year of their lives and as you can imagine his recovery has been long and tedious. after more than a year i finally met the man who was supposed to be dead. november 2014 california and montgomery street. emergency crew rushed to the scene of an accident. >> one individual fell off the pinned 0washing apparatus. >> he's definitely unconscious. >> took off my jacket. put it over him. >> perez an experienced window washer lost his balance and fell from the top of this 11 story building. 120 feet. landing on a moving car. >> i don't remember nothing. >>reporter: that's common with people who suffer serious brain trauma. he remembers waking up in the hospital three days later.

he had broken his pelvis. lost all feeling in his right leg. and severed an artery in his right arm which today he has trouble lifting. so what do you think happened up there. >> i felt very sure of myself. i felt i had a lot of experience. >>reporter: this is demonstration of what cal/osha concluded following the investigation. the lanyard attached to his safety harness was connected to an anchor point but perez briefly disconnected that lanyard to position himself on the edge of the roof. he was in the process of moving the extension cord of the suspended scaffold when he lost his balance. >> many times when i was there i would think if i ever fell i would be nothing but broken pieces. >>reporter: this passing toyota camry helped break his fall. perez would not have survived haddk the car gone by there a split second later. >> nobody survives a fall from

that high up. >>reporter: have you seen the car, a picture of the car? >> just a little bit. not for long because i don't want to site. i don't want to remember nothing about that. >>reporter: the driver mohammad of dublin had his share of luck that day. it would have been a different out come had perez landed on his windshield. because the accident still haunts him he refs to drive into downtown san francisco. >> officially when i was like making left turn so i was always thinking like something is going to fall or something is going to hit me. >>reporter: the two have never met. but mohammad was glad to know that perez was slowly recovering. still something as easy as putting on a pair of sox is a struggle. >> yes i think it's going every day better. >>reporter: perez is 59 years old and spends many hours a week doing physical therapy to relearn how to walk and strengthen his body. he's never going back to being a window washer.
