good morning, everyone. we begin with the latest democratic showdown. hillary clinton and bernie sanders clashing in debate number six. >> the two candidates faced off in milwaukee last night, tangling over health care, immigration, and big money donors. they each made an assertive pitch for the crucial minority vote. it was the first time they squared off since clinton's bruising defeat in new hampshire. >> sanders restated his call for a political revolution. as clinton aligned herself with president obama. it's your voice, your vote. we get the latest from abc's lana zak. >> i do have a disagreement here. >> reporter: the differences were substantive but subtle. in last night's democratic debate. >> we agree that wall street should never be allowed to wreck main street again. but here's the point i want to make tonight. i am not a single issue candidate. i do not believe we live in a single issue country. >> reporter: hillary clinton trying to reset after being

walloped in new hampshire. the demographics now changing, voters more than 90% white in iowa and new hampshire. but in south carolina, more than half of democratic voters could be african-americans. >> when we have more people in jail disproportionately african-american and latino than china does, here's my promise. at the end of my first term as president, we will not have more people in jail than any other country. >> reporter: the fireworks really coming at the end, with this contentious moment. >> the kind of criticism that we heard from senator sanders about our president, i expect from republicans, i do not expect from someone running for the democratic nomination to succeed president obama. >> that is -- madame secretary, that is a low blow. one of us ran against barack obama. i was not that candidate. >> reporter: and clinton was even asked about her defeat in

inspect. . she was asked specifically how she managed to lose female voters. she said she spent her entire career working to empower women to make their own choices, even if that choice was not to vote for her. kendis, reena? >> abc's lana zak live in washington. thank you very much. the controversial e-mails from hillary clinton's private server are being released at a politically sensitive time. that's after a federal judge ordered all of them released in four installments. a new batch is coming tomorrow. another is set for february 19th. that's day before the nevada caucus. more due a day before the south carolina primary. the final batch due out just before super tuesday. meanwhile, republican candidates are stepping up their attacks on donald trump, hoping to keep him from another blowout victory. but trump is still leading in the polls in south carolina. his confidence level so high right now, his campaign is planning to run only positive ads. trump even took a quick trip to louisiana, which doesn't vote until march 5th.

he's also looking far into the future. >> i'm going to be there. i'm going to do a great job. hopefully, i get an extra four years. maybe i don't. >> well, jeb bush was among the candidates blasting trump. he's now embracing the establishment label. his brother, former president bush plans to campaign for him in south carolina next week. u.s. officials say the military sex appending the number of air strikes against isis. sources claim there have been about 20 american strikes against militant targets in eastern afghanistan in just the past three weeks. those strikes took place after president obama authorized the pentagon to attack isis in afghanistan, where its numbers are growing. secretary of state john kerry in europe, working with other diplomats, hoping to stop syria's civil war. this morning, they've agreed on a temporary truce that will take effect next week. there are serious doubts about whether syria's military or the syrian rebels will implement the truce. kerry is hoping it will set the stage for a full cease-fire. and peace talks. in northern mexico, a prison riot turns deadly, killing at

least 49 people. it started as a brawl between drug gangs. the prison is home to more than 3800 inmates, more than twice its capacity. authorities say no inmates escaped. anguished relatives waited outside as the names of the inmates killed were released. that riot taking place on the eve of the pope's six-day visit to mexico. but before e heading there, pran s francis visits cuba today for an historic meeting with the leader of the russian orthodox church. the meeting is an attempt to reconcile their churches. national wildlife refuge will remain closed for weeks now that an armed standoff is over. the final four holdouts have surrendered peacefully. they'll face a judge today. they were protesting federal control of public lands. a new york city police officer has been con vicked of manslaughter for fatally shooting an unarmed man in the

stairwell of a public housing complex. officer peter liang says he accidentally shot akai girly two years ago. he faces up to 15 years behind bars. the case became part of a national debate on race as well as police brutality over the years. well, now some weather. most of the eastern u.s. can look for potentially record-breaking cold over the weekend. the ice in scranton, pennsylvania, not going anywhere anytime soon. it's the result of a 12-inch water main that burst yesterday. a faultily valve may be to blame. but have your skates. get ready in that neighborhood. the extreme cold will have about 65 million americans in its grips over the next couple of days. >> yeah, bundling up just in time for valentine's day. accuweather's justin povick has the details. good morning, justin. >> kendis, reena, thanks. good morning you to as well. it's cold. it is going to be turning even colder. check it out on this friday.

his wife, reportedly jumped out of a second-story window in fear for her life. investigators say vega took off with his son and yesterday afternoon, police recovered the boy and arrested vega at a fairfield apartment without incident. he was a graduate of the napa police academy the same police academy that officer vegas graduated from in 1990. at this point, there is no word on a motive. >> they all had a great relationship. something just must have went really sour. >> we are in shock. honestly, i am not 100 percent sure yet. >> flags were lowered to half staff at the richmond police defendant. the officer and his wife had ten 20 and 20 grandchild. he was 58. >> in the newsroom for abc7 news. >> thank you. his wife, sandra, is recovering this morning after jumping out a
