ends presidents day at sleep train. live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." the search is on for the runaway driver in a deadly hit and run in the south bay. good afternoon. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. larry beil is on assignment. it happened overnight in san jose. police have found the car, so they know who they are looking for. david louie has been following the story all day. david? >> reporter: dan and ama, winchester boulevard has designated bike lanes but they alone do not protect bicyclists. the driver responsible for killing a man is still at large, but the name of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin. san jose found the bicyclist on the ground. the man was pronounced dead at

the scene. witnesses saw a red honda drive off north bound on winchester. a red car with extensive front end damage was found this morning about two blocks north of the crash site. the restaurant was closed overnight so no one saw the driver. >> i reported it and the police came in and said the car was involved in an accident in a hit and run. i didn't know then until they told me. he said somebody was killed with that car. that really shocked me. >> reporter: an officer told him a bottle of beer was found inside. the license plate apparently fell off and was also found inside the car. miguel gonzalez says police have been cracking down on speeding along winchester boulevard. >> a police with a motorcycle has been stopping cars lately

because they drive on this street 50, 60 miles per hour. >> reporter: however, enforcement did not prevent this accident. >> if they're out here at night, be careful because people fly through here. i try to stay off the sidewalks at night. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, "abc7 news." a 50-year-old woman was killed this morning when a car hit her in san francisco. this was just before 8:00 a.m. investigators say the car was traveling quite fast when it struck the woman. the driver stayed at the scene. no word on whether the driver will face charges. it's been an emotional afternoon for family and friends of richmond police officer gus vegas shot and killed yesterday inside his vallejo home. they gathered today to thank the public for the outpouring of support and to share their thoughts about the veteran officer and family man. >> i can't help but reflect b k

back -- reflect back growing up with a dad that would literally wear his shoes until the soles of the shoe would separate just to make sure he had food on the table. >> the suspect, 30-year-old robert vega, is in custody. he's the father of officer vegas' grandson. at 5:00, find out what his wife is saying about the suspect. developing news. sky 7 hd shows what used to be a house in pacifica, now destroyed by fire. smoke is still pouring out of the charred wreckage. it started at 2:30 this afternoon. it is also sitting on the edge of the bluff just north of the pacifica pier. firefighters extinguished the fire in about one hour. no one was hurt. police are still at the scene of a stabbing where a man killed his own father. it happened inside an apartment.

police say they got 911 calls from neighbors who heard somebody "i don't want to die." when officers died, the young man who answered the door was covered in blood. >> they came across a man believed to be the father of the 21-year-old that opened the front door, deceased, suffering from critical stab wounds. >> family members who arrived at the apartment were in shock. police have arrested the victim's son for murder. they're not saying what may have been behind this deadly confrontation. >> frightening accident just before noon involving a muni bus and several vehicles. >> kristen sze is here with the video of the chain reaction accident. >> reporter: at least four vehicles playing twist we are a large muni bus. it happened around 11:30 this morning. sky 7 hd captured the crash scene moments after it happened.

a vehicle was going fast when it rear ended another vehicle as it was turning and this was the result. the white truck with its tail in the air pushed at a crazy angle on top of a sedan, smashing into the muni bus. muni officials tell nooul new the bus was stopped at the time waiting for a red light. it had only a driver and one passenger on board. neither was injured. the driver of the pickup is also okay, but two people inside the crushed sedan, a man and a woman, were injured. they've been taken to the hospital. a couple of other vehicles also got tangled up, but no additional injuries. muni was detoured for a while, but reopened after crews removed the wrecked vehicles. >> thank you so much, kristen. let's turn to the weather and get ready for some heat. >> spencer christian is here with our accuweather update. >> the heat will be on beginning

two 15-year-old girls were found shot to death at a high school in glendale, arizona. but authorities are not looking for a shooter. police in the phoenix suburbs say they received a call of shots fired just before 8:00 this morning. they arrived on scene and found the bodies near the

administration building at independence high school, each with a single gunshot wound. >> these two young women were found next to each other with a weapon found beside them. >> police did not have any information on the relationship between the girls and working to determine if one was the shooter. some parents expressed frustration about not getting information quickly enough. this shooting happened on the same day as an exclusive interview with sue clebolt. >> her son dilan and his friend killed 13 people before taking their own lives. it's been 17 years since the columbine high school shootings in colorado. >> reporter: she thought her love would be enough. >> i think we like to believe our love and our understanding is protective, and if anything were wrong with my kids, i would know. >> reporter: tonight, she tells

"abc7 news" was at an emotional news conference this afternoon at the family's church. the family pastor talked about gus' love for the denver broncos and how his family watched the super bowl last sunday. a motive hasn't been released. "abc7 news" reporter vic lee spoke with the widow of the man who died after getting swept away by strong waves. coming up at 5:00, how she hopes this story will prevent others from drowning. and lyanne melendez tweeted out this picture of a nasty accident this morning. fortunately no one was seriously hurt. fbi bomb teams didn't find any explosives or traps at a national wildlife refuge in oregon occupied by protesters. the group surrendered yesterday after a standoff that lasted more than a month. marci gonzalez has the latest. >> reporter: today, the four final occupiers of this national wildlife refuge in oregon, preparing to face a judge on

felony charges after yesterday's tense showdown. >> come out with your hands up. >> no, we're not. >> reporter: they finally surrendered peacefully, ending a more than 40-day standoff. the tense negotiations with federal agents played out over a live streamed phone call. the group was demanding the federal government turn over public lands to local control. last month, the standoff leaders were arrested during the traffic stop and the group spokesman was shot and killed when investigators say he reached for a gun following a police chase. in all, at least 20 people are now indicted on federal charges linked to the occupation. the wild life refuge still closed to the public but now free of armed occupiers for the first time in more than a month. >> we have said since day one, our goal has been to end this illegal occupation peace any and we are grateful we were able to

do so. >> reporter: marci gonzalez, abc news, new york. a massive warehouse fire in new jersey that burned out of control for nearly 20 hours is finally contained. the fire broke out yesterday afternoon inside an industrial park just outside of trenton. massive amounts of spoke poured from the building. authorities canceled classes at nearby school due to concerns over possible toxins in the smoke. the coast guard is trying to determine if the cruise ship, battered and damaged by a winter storm in the atlantic, is fit to sail right now. the crew is examining the propulsion system. the ship also sustained cosmetic damage after running into hurricane force winds. congress voted to impose more sanctions on north korea.

republican and democratic lawmakers have been pushing for more sanctions since north korea tested a nuclear device in january. the white house has agreed on the need for tougher sanctions. the governor of michigan will appear at a congressional hearing into the flint water crisis. he asked for the opportunity to testify before the house oversight committee. a date for the hearing hasn't been sit. governor snider is under fire for his handling of the crisis. republican presidential hopefuls are wooing voters in south carolina now before the next debate there tomorrow night. and the democratic candidates are back on the trail after trading some sharp words in wisconsin last night. >> reporter: in south carolina, ahead of tomorrow's republican debate, the candidates take aim at donald trump. >> we have an entertainer, a guy

south bound. that's huge. >> closures and detours around super bowl city in san francisco were lifted last night, mercifully. amy hollyfield hit the road today to see if back to normal is a good thing for drivers. >> reporter: here is a sight we haven't seen in about three weeks. cars, buses, and trollies, driving south bound on embarcadero and market. both streets opened up last night. >> it's freedom. we get our city back. it's nice. >> reporter: the streets were shut down to accommodate super bowl city. but it took all this week to tear down the stages and exhibits, leaving the streets closed and commuters frustrated. >> the taxis, as well as the cars were not allowed to pick up in front of the ferry building. >> reporter: the earlier than expected opening was welcomed by happy commuters this morning who had been watching every day for

more than $500 has to be put in writing. it includes your rights to cancel, all the rights you have. exactly what's going to be done. any time you make a change on a project, you need a change order to stay legal. so anybody telling you that, i would be very concerned. if it's just a handyman showing up saying i'll fix your fence for $100, you don't need it then. but any real project, everything, everything. >> good to know. >> lynn e-mailed, can restaurants still charge us a healthy san francisco surcharge? >> you're thinking, now we have the affordable care act, also known as obamacare. so can they still charge me for healthy san francisco? the answer is yes. they're still allowed to do that. many of the people who work in restaurants do not qualify for the affordable care act. for one, you have to be a legal resident here this the united states before you can sign up for the affordable care act.

we're receiving is a testament to the life that he led. >> good evening. i'm kristen sze. >> for the first time we're hearing from the family of richmond police officer gus vegas. he was killed in his home early yesterday in a domestic dispute involving his grandson's father. we're live from church on the hill where the family gathered today with a surprising message. melanie? >> reporter: yeah, dan, it was here on these church grounds that officer gus vegas' wife, sandra, told me the entire family has already forgiven robert vega, accused of shooting and killing officer vegas. in the midst of unbearable pain, an act of tremendous bravery, one step at a time. >> growing up with a dad that would literally wear his shoes until the soles of the shoes

would separate just to make sure we had food on the table. >> reporter: this is a family whose love knows no limits. >> i can't help but to think now the compassion, the generosity and the love that we're receiving is a testament to that life that he led. >> reporter: that life marked by service. >> the life of a police officer that he devoted to protecting others, and a life of a father that he ultimate hi sacrificed if protecting his family. >> reporter: his life ended thursday morning. a father of one of his grandchildren, 30-year-old robert vega, is accused of shooting and killing him. off camera, sandra vega said robert vega called gus dad. she jumped from the home's second story window because she didn't think she would see her 6-year-old grandson again.
