live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc 7 news." >> u.s. supreme court justice antonin scalia tonight is being remembered as the conservative rock of the nation's highest court. a live look at the white house. the president has ordered flags at the white house and across the country be flown at half-staff. good evening. i'm eric thomas. we'll get back to the passing of justice scalia in a moment. first, breaking news. firefighters are just getting a three-alarm fire under control in san francisco. let's go to abc 7's tiffany wilson. >> that's right. right across the street from where that fire began. you can see firefighters going into the building right there behind me. that three-alarm fire is now out. the firefighters expect to be here overnight, though, watching and looking for any hot spots. and just making sure that nobody

goes into these buildings. early reports had as many as 50 people being displaced. i just spoke with the assistant fire chief who says it's closer to 20 to 25 people displaced. there are members of the red cross standing next to me. so they are here on scene trying to assist those displaced individuals as best as they can. the assistant fire chief tells me no one was injured but one dog is still missing. the three-alarm fire began around 8:00 this evening. and the initial firefighters who arrived on scene found flames shooting out of the garage and the first floor. that fire quickly escalated to a second and then third alarm. the scientistant chief says the age of the home contributed to putting out this fire. >> we have two 50-foot ladders

here. we can't use our aerials. we put the ladders up fully extended to get to the roof. that was a challenge. >> reporter: take a look at this video shot by amateur photographer michael cunningham. he says he could feel the intense heat from where he was shooting the video. it gives you a perspective on how hot the fire was and how strong those flames were during the most intense moments this evening. fortunately, you can see the fire that initially started in this first house and spread to a second is now out. there are firefighters here on scene. they expect to be here all night long. traffic in this area will be a mess. they have some of the roads around here shut off. you can expect that if you are here tonight. 20 to 25 people displaced, but

no one seriously injured. tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> thanks. for breaking news updates on this fire and any other story, download our abc 7 news app and enable push alerts for immediate notifications. back to our other top story. the sudden death of supreme court justice antonin scalia. scalia died in his sleep at a private residence in south texas. he was considered the supreme court's most fiery conservative voice. his death leaves the court in limbo. there are four liberal leaning justices. the three conservative leaning judges are chief justice john roberts, samuel alito and clarence thomas. anthony kennedy has long been considered the more moderate swing vote. scalia's death will likely set off a struggle between the president and congress. lana zach has the story from washington. >> reporter: just scalia was

known for his razor sharp mind, costic wit and his passing leaves a tremendous hole. justice scalia was known as the conservative anchor of the supreme court. his sudden death was marked by republicans and democrats alike. >> he influenced a generation of judges, lawyers and students. and profoundly shaped the legal landscape. >> he'll go down as one of the great justices in the history of this republic. >> reporter: there's already a political battle brewing. mitch mcconnell threatening republicans will not confirm any obama nominee. the president saying he'll fulfill his constitutional responsibility. >> there will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing. >> reporter: antonin scalia was the longest serving justice on the current united states supreme court. nominated by president ronald reagan in 1986. >> getting nominated to the

supreme court is the culmination of a dream, of course. and i'm greatly honored that the president would have such confidence in me. >> reporter: he was confirmed unanimously by the senate and became the first italian american member of the court. justice scalia died in his sleep of natural causes at a resort in west texas. he leaves behind a wife and nine children. he was 79 years old. though justice scalia was firm in his conservative beliefs, he had no problem reaching across the aisle, counting among his very closest friends liberal justice ruth bader ginsburg. >> justice scalia's death has already sent shockwaves through the presidential race. bay area experts say u.s. senate races could also be affected. sergio quintana is in the newsroom with that. >> reporter: if the republican

run senate didn't act on the president's nominees, it could focus attention on senators up for election. republicans are defending more seats than democrats. as many memorialize justice antonin scalia's conservative voice on the supreme court, president obama says he will nominate someone to replace him. >> in due time, there will be plenty of time for me to do so and for the senate to fulfill its responsibility. >> bay area politicians and scholars analyzing how this will play out. jackie spear will not have a role in the confirmation process, but she knows the politics. >> it's a very tight wire that the senate majority will actually be walking because they could be seen as being obstructionist. >> reporter: supreme court confirmations can have a role in national races. some scholars say the contention confirmation of clarence thomas ushered in big changes in senate

marshall gardner, the man mario woods was accuse of stabbing before san francisco police shot and killed him on december 2nd is showing his face for the first time in this exclusive video from dailymail.com. he spoke anonymously to abc 7 news on february 4th about woods stabbing him with a knife in the bayview neighborhood. it's the same knife officers say woods refused to drop before they shot him 20 times. >> it bothers me because it's something that i see often too much. i see too many just black men just get gunned down for no reason. >> the shooting death of woods prompted a call for change in the police department's use of force policy. the group people for the

live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> good evening. i'm eric thomas. up to 25 people are out of their homes after a fire tonight in the alamo square area of san francisco. it started in a home at baker and fulton and spread to the house next door. the three-alarm fire is now out. no one was hurt and firefighters have just found a missing dog. they'll be there overnight watching for hot spots. because of all the smoke in the area, they are asking people nearby to close their windows and turn on their fans. tonight there are big shoes to fill on the supreme court following the passing of conservative justice antonin scalia. the 79-year-old died of natural causes at a texas ranch this morning. president obama will nominate someone to replace scalia. mitch mcconnell is threatening the senate will not approve his

nominee. republicans running for president offered condolences to scalia's family at a debougatde. they differed on who should suggest his replacement. impactful words for residents of mexico. >> reporter: as pope francis appeared on the streets of mexico city, he brings something far greater than celebrity. he brings home. 2 million people have emerged from their home to get a glimpse of him. it's his words that have the most impact. in his speeches today he dove right in to the heavy issues that burden this country. he talked of mexico's violent drug trade. >> translator: i am particularly

was on his way to work when he noticed a car with smoke billowing from it. conyer epss conyers' first instinct was to see if there was anybody in the car. >> i pulled him through the window and pulled him ten feet from the car. by that time the car was engulfed in flames. >> conyers does not consider himself a family. the young man's family is grateful for his bravery. new details on two blow gun dart attacks on the golden gate bridge. one was vufting from can do, the other from mexico. they are continuing to search for suspects. both suspects were walking north to vista point yesterday afternoon when they were hit in the thigh and knee. paramedics treated them at the scene. muni riders are mission street were taken by surprise. a dozen bus stops had been taken out of service.

abc 7 news reporter lilian kim has the story. >> reporter: muni riders showed up at their usual stop only to discover the buses were driving right past them. changes have begun on mission street. a busy corridor where people ride a muni bus on this stretch 65,000 times a day. >> it's always better to have more stops than fewer stops. >> i guess i need to go down one street. maybe it's not the worst thing in the world. >> reporter: flyers are postod muni stopped and being handed out. 12 stops have been taken out of service. seven going toward downtown. five toward daley city. >> some are upset. older people are upset. what can i do? >> reporter: it's all part of a plan to ease traffic flow and make the muni ride faster. some are worried about safety. >> especially if you are walking alone at night. you don't want to walk too far. if you are a woman. a lot of my female co-workers
