forecast, guys. drew, thank you so much. and officials are looking at the long-waited opening of crab season, the official crab season was on hold because of the toxic season. >> yeah, but now that it's opened everybody is not happy about it. >> reporter: well, dan and ama, some fishermen say they're willing to wait for the situation to calm down, saying the partial opening could make it impossible for the crab to migrate to cleaner water. now that official crab season has begun, it's on hold until november. >> i think it's a beautiful opportunity for the fishermen that still operate this time of year and the public to get a taste of the crab. >> reporter: but not everybody is as eager as he is. the department of fish and wildlife is considering of

opening the area near point rays, where the fishermen are already allowed. but then, others want to wait until all california crab are clean of toxins. they sent a letter to the department of fish and wildlife. concerned that it is risky and will clog the ports. >> they are concerned that north of point rays tested dirty, only 12 miles away from where they want us to open. so the buyers are concerned about these crabs. >> reporter: he is ready to get to work but his main concern is how the disastrous season is hurting their industry financially. >> no opening at this time could be a bad thing. >> reporter: a decision on the opening is expected in a day or two. in half moon bay, alyssa

harrington, abc 7 news. and we're learning more about this man, contreras, who is accused of shooting two men and wounding a third. in 2014, he slammed a stolen car into an atv transit bus, which then hit a house and damaged a gas line. at least 11 people were hurt. last night, police discovered another stolen car. this one had been carjacked. that led them to a house in richmond. the father of one of the victims reacted to the news of contreras' capture. >> maybe closure, a little consolation. but that is not going to bring my son back. >> coming up at 5:00, abc 7 news reporter vic lee will look deeper into contreras' criminal record and how little time he spent in jail. a touching tribute to richmond police officer who was killed. >> today, officers saluted as body was taken from the coroner's office to the

mortuary. >> and we learned about new details you will see on abc 7, melanie? >> reporter: well, dan, nearly all of officer vegas' family members were here. and it seems they will be at vega's court appearance tomorrow. they say that vega, who is accused of killing officer vegas, who is like family. >> reporter: the van carrying the richmond police officer gust vegas' body passed by supporters paying their respects, with the officer's family close by. they arrived together at sky view. >> it was almost the protection, just going from fairfield to vallejo. >> reporter: the daughter and mom watched as the flag-draped coffin was brought inside.

>> i am just so grateful. i can't believe he was my dad. >> reporter: bianca said her parents had had a storybook romance. >> he told my mom he would take care of her until the end of his life and until the end of her life. >> reporter: as the family grieves, they say they are also praying for vega, the son is accused of killing him at his vallejo home. vallejo police turned the case over to the solano county district attorney's office. >> it's under review right now, and we'll file all appropriate charges. >> reporter: robert vega served in the army from 2004 to 2009, deploying to kuwait in 2009 and iraq in 2006. while his fairfield neighbors say he suffered with ptsd-related issues, officer vegas' family says they are not speculating.

>> we're just praying for him and his family as well. >> reporter: they say the guided support from the richmond police and beyond. well, an east bay community is in mourning today after the sudden death of a police officer. a veteran of the pittsburg office died after he was off the job. >> ama and dan, this is a picture of officer donny peerman, who was known for his big smile and big heart. he was universally loved and respected by the people he served in pittsburg's toughest neighborhood. this is pictures from an hour ago when they accompanied him to the funeral home. he collapsed of a heart attack last night at the sun valley mall in concord after calling to report he and his partner had caught a suspected shoplifter. the officer died shortly after. loss prevention was one of his

side jobs, done after he joined the police department for pittsburg. as some say, he defined going the extra mile. last year, a boy's play station was stolen from his home. you know what he did? the officer bought a replacement out of his own pocket. and at christmas, he again spent his money to buy gifts for seniors. look, this is pictures from the pittsburg facebook page. when he learned a young mother and her child became homeless he arranged for them to stay at local motels, officer pierman's death was a big blow. we'll have reaction from the people officer pierman helped coming up at 5 and 6:00. dan? okay, kristen, thank you very much. and san francisco's elite gathered to say good-bye to a large figure in san francisco. he was an aide to four mayors and six u.s. senators, dying at

the age of 85. he was a top aide to mayor feinstein. the senator attended his memorial where she attended a flag to his family. and an attorney is missing, steven mitchell was reported missing saturday. park rangers found his car in bodega bay the next day. investigators do not believe that mitchell was a victim of foul play, he was hired by the family of andy lopez, the person was carrying a pellet gun when he was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy in 2013. the fbi will team up with san francisco's district attorney to investigate public corruption in the city. both are announcing they are forming a joint task force, regarding statements filed against people with close ties to san francisco's city hall. >> the good old boys, the pay for play system that has worked in san francisco so long has to

win. >> we continue to send the message to the residents of san francisco and those that hold public office that we will not tolerate this type of criminal activity. former school board president chief jackson and two other people face accusations of asking for bribes, jackson has already pled guilty in a separate case related to raymond chow. that case was linked to senator yee who has also been convicted in the case and awaits sentencing. and protesters dropped a banner outside the public utilities building calls on the state to shut down all natural gas facilities in the state. no arrests were made. the protests came in response to the massive gas leak at the storage at that time discovered in october, crews finally capped it just last thursday. if you take muni to get around san francisco it may soon cost you more. according to the examiner, the monthly passes could jump from 70 to of $5, and individual

walnut creek, burlingame, campbell and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. today, the grand opening for the pharmacy in san jose where for a few months now they have been giving away prescription medication for free. >> that is right, today's ceremony was all about getting the word out. >> what price would you put on your health? >> this is anti-viral for hiv patients. very expensive. >> reporter: for some, the price is just too high. that is why the santa clara county public health department opened up the better health pharmacy on east santa clara street in downtown san jose back in august and held their grand

in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. and a group of blind moviegoers are suing because of the audio description technology, the services described scenes without dialogue to the visually impaired. scott blanks experienced a problem when he took his sons to their first movie. >> i had a pair of the headphones and the audio description equipment and it worked for about ten minutes and appeared to have run out of batteries. i was not able to communicate with my boys for what was happening in the remainder of the film. >> the suit is not seeking monetary damages and instead asks that they maintain their head sets. and a new iphone 5 se will be available on march 18th. the phone is said to be smaller and cheaper than the recent iphone 6, but includes some of the same features.

right near the surface. so the very mild overnight period will not be record warmth again on your wednesday. you will notice about ten to 20 degrees cooler tomorrow than we are today. only in the upper 50s to low-to-mid 60s across the region. and this cooler air comes with that rain. when our storm impact rating, all season long, one to five, one is light, five, the most severe and gives you a better idea of what to expect with each storm. the one coming tomorrow, a two, the moderate storm on the impact scale, we have upgraded it from a one. we're seeing more moisture associated with this storm and some gusty winds. so here we go. hour by hour, time it out for you, future weather tomorrow morning as we go towards 8:00 a.m., mainly light showers around cloverdale, ukiah, the wet weather is located along the north, in the bay activity picking up.

we are expecting a wet afternoon and evening commute. and what you notice, a line of showers developing along that cold front. first at 4:00 starting at ukiah, cloverdale, approaching santa rosa, by 7:00, we think it will be over vallejo, oakland, san francisco, san mateo. i don't think it's out of the question that we could see an isolated thundershower. working through san jose and fremont. then in the early morning hours on thursday, justñi isolated showers. so total rainfall with this storm system as it moves through, we're thinking about a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain across the region. but it also comes with very breezy conditions. future tracker wind gusts show tomorrow the winds will gust between 30 and 35 miles per hour out of the south. so we have a wind advisory out of the south. the big concern is we could see local power outages. really, the main effect, between

love robinson opened an obstetrics office, he has been charged with practicing medicine without a license. it was a wild ride yesterday for a couple racing to the hospital before their baby was born. they didn't quite make it in time. as the ohio hospital and wife headed out the door to the hospital, kaitlyn's water broke. but not a problem, she is a nurse, her husband a firefighter. >> knowing we wouldn't make it to the hospital, that was instinct. and then it also started to play into being a nurse they say when you start to feel the urge to push, then it's probably going to happen. then you know, i've done it once before. so -- >> and it happened. kaitlin gave birth for the front seat of their car. here is the dispatch call. >> officer thomas. >> i'm off duty right now but i work for harrison and my wife just delivered our baby in our

contrer contreras, the suspected gunman. they saw the gunman up close and personal. >> we locked eyes. >> reporter: last night, the s.w.a.t. officers came there after the officers who staked out a home spotted contreras outside. they recovered his suv, this is not the first time contreras is accused of stealing a vehicle. in september 2014 he smashed a stolen car into an ac transit bus. the bus slammed into a house, ruptured a gas line and injured at least 11 people. contreras pled guilty to stealing the car and to leaving the scene of an accident. for that, he got a year in jail and 12 day's credit for time served. this is his mug shot then. february last year, court records revealed
