flames tore through their temple overnight. look at this video. the fire is so ferocious, it spread to other building as long that block. >> firefighters are still on the scene near 52nd avenue and tenth street in oakland. that's where abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live as well. >> reporter: look at what's left of that buddhist temple here on east 10th street in oakland. the monk -- one of the monks who were living here believes a candle still burning from a celebration last night may be to blame for this fire. three people were taken to the hospital. one man and two women. they were burned. they are expected to survive. this fire spread quickly. it destroyed two other homes and five vehicles before firefighters could get it out. >> right now the temple is uninabtable as well as two other houses. red cross here assisting. there were 11 displaced citizens but only four requiring

we'll come back with a look at your bay bridge in a few. >> thank you. while a san jose police officer is quietly back at work, outrage is growing louder over his reinstatement this morning. the officer was fired over tweets he sent out against black lives matters demonstrators. matt keller is here with who's getting involved today. >> reporter: the department didn't want officer white back on the job. the city didn't either. and many community advocates are upset he's back here at the san jose police department working. but he is back unless a judge overturns the arbitrator's decision. according to the san jose mercury news, the mayor will ask city council to consider city council to consider challenging his reinstatement.

officer white was fired after sending out tlenting tweets to black lives matter protesters. an independent arbitrator reversed that decision and he was assigned to a desk job. mercury news says the only way to overturn the reinstatement is through superior court. officer white is assigned to a desk job and is not patrolling the streets. we're going to take to you phoenix. we've been following breaking news. just got an update from police about a scary situation. they confirm in the past few minutes a family of shot inside that home. you can see there's smoke coming from the home. it's a little hard to tell. light smoke at this point. police believe the shooter is still inside and he set the house on fire after the shooting. it's not clear what his connection is to the family or whether anyone is even alive inside the home. of course, we'll continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates as they come in.

follow us for updates on twitter @abc7news.com. danville police are investigating an apparent murder/suicide. the bodies of a man and women were found at a home on cross bridge place around 6:15 last night. officers were called about possible fumes coming from the garage. they found 63-year-old paul sweat unconscious inside. he later died at the hospital. 55-year-old chalon swen was found inside the home from a gunshot wound. it's not clear what led to heir deaths. the santa clara county board of supervisors will vote to build a new jail in san jose. it will sit next to the current jail and cost $80 million in state funding. there will be improved visitation areas and better medical space for those inmates with mental health issues. if approved, construction would take at least 2 1/2 years to complete. a 97-year-old woman being forced from her home she's lived in for more than half a century

my truck, it catch on fire with the fire, you know. fierce flames in the east bay have destroyed a buddhist temple and damaged other vehicles. firefighters are still on the scene. this morning we're hearing it may have started after a celebration. thanks for joining us this morning. it's 6:30. >> abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has been live on that scene in oakland since 4:30. >> reporter: hi. i just talked to firefighters who think an annual celebration here at this buddhist temple in oakland is to blame for the fire. firefighters say the fire was big and spread quickly because this is a wooden structure. it ended up destroying the

temple and then two houses next door. five vehicles were also destroyed here on east tenth street. three people were hurt. one of those victims was burned. they all are expected to be okay. no-life threatening injuries. firefighters say the amongst living here say they leave the candles burning all night for their celebration. they were sleeping when this fire started. >> the latest information we have here is that the fire's still undetermined, but one of the probable causes we believe is were left burning for their celebration. >> reporter: firefighters are helping the four mopgs that lived here to find a place to stay. firefighters say it took them 80 minutes to knock this fire out. they are going to keep watching

the growing debate pitting privacy versus security. apple versus the fbi. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson joins us with the latest. >> reporter: in that latest tech leader to weigh in is bill gates. this morning he's trying to clarify his stance about the dispute between apple and the fbi. in an interview with the financial times, it sounds like gates supports the fbi's position. speaking to bloomberg tv in the past hour, gates says that's not exactly his view. he feels there needs to be a discussion about the issues and ultimately it would be decided by congress. many tech leaders are supporting apple's fight against the government's demand to hack into the iphone of a san bernardino shooter. yesterday apple ceo tim cook sent an internal e-mail saying, creating that code would put the private data of hundreds of millions of customers at risk. the fbi director says the request is narrow and this investigation is about the victims. bill gates sees historical similarities in the government's

pleasanton police want to know if you know this man. he and two others are accused of attacking and robbing women in the stone ridge mall parking lot. the men grabbed one woman's purse and kicked her in the back sunday afternoon. police think the same man robbed a 17-year-old girl the night before. the attackers wrestled her to the ground and punched her in the face. both victims are recovering from minor injuries. a fraternity at uc-berkeley is at the center of a sexual assault investigation this morning. the incident happened just after midnight on friday. police aren't saying which fraternity is-t is. this is the fourth sexual assault in berkeley in little more than a week. police are still looking for this man. he's the suspect in three other recent sexual assaults that happened near campus. santa cruz police are stepping up patrols around two churches hit by vandals. this is a holy cross church north of downtown. someone splashed blue paint all over the entrance early sunday morning. police say the same person then

smeared the same color paint on the front of nearby cavalry episcopal church. a high school junior is facing charges after police say he brought a gun to school. the 17-year-old was arrested in redwood yesterday. police found an antique shotgun in his car after someone called in saying that teen was trying sell it. the gun was disassembled and there was no ammunition. the 17-year-old told police he got it from a family member and planned to get it cleaned. happening tonight, san francisco's board of education will consider giving condoms to middle school students. high school students can already receive condoms at schools. district officials say it would prevent pregnancies and sexually transmitteded diseases. they estimate 5% of middle school students are having sex. students would need to meet with a nurse or counselor before receiving those con.comes. the republican presidential candidates are in nevada today for the caucuses. the front-runner, donald trump, is looking to cement his hold on the gop nomination. he'll be in sparks, nevada,

today. trump continues to lash out at rival ted cruz. yesterday he told a crowd of thousands in las vegas that ted cruz is sick and that there's something wrong with the guy. trump is angry over an ad cruz's campaign has been airing. it accuses trump of being against turning over federal land in nevada to state control. trump says, quote, that's not a subject he knows anything about. if you're a republican voter, there are now fewer of you in california. new numbers show the gop is down 8% over the last four years. republicans now make up 28% of registered voters. meanwhile, the democratic party is at 43%. 24% of the state voters are registered at independent. it's time to talk weather. let's do some temperatures first by starting down in the south bay where we have mid-40s. 39 in danville. that's one of the cool spots. let's go ahead and take a look at our inland east bay neighborhoods -- i should say

deliver medical care. the family accuses the sheriff's office of providing substandard medical treatment. san jose mayor plans to ask city council to challenge a decision to give a fired police officer his job back. phillip white lost his job. his attorney says the tweets were in response to threats made against his family. an independent auditor recently reinstated white ruling the tweets did not provide a reason to fire the officer. local naacp leaders say they're going to court today to challenge that decision. this morning the santa clara da is trying to decide whether to retry two former san jose state students for a hate crime. a jury yesterday found three men, logan, collin and joseph bumgarner guilty of battery. the issue of a hate crime was

another matter. bumgarner was found not guilty while the jury was dead locked on charges for the other two. this goes back to 2013 when the three white students roomed with donald williams, who is afternoon can american. >> we believe the evidence very strongly supported that these acts were motivated in whole and in part by bigotry. >> the three could get up to six months in jail for the battery charge when they're sentenced march 14th. meantime, the school says it's working to make its campus a more welcoming and safer environment. new report out from the department of health and human services showing there's been a dramatic increase in the number of mastectomies over the last decade. breast cancer remains at the same rate. the number of double mastectomies has more than tripled. experts recommend having a conversation with the breast surgeon to treat the whole woman not just a single body part.
