57-year-old wife and mother shelly has been missing a week and a half. her husband, paul, reported her disappearance two case later. >> the husband came up to the house and asked us have we seen her. >> reporter: the police said paul told investigators she left her cell phone and laptop at home and she had a history of bipolar disorder and depression. >> two case ago, him and his son were putting up these signs. >> reporter: today those signs were covered by crime scene tape. investigators spent much of their time out back. they swabbed this white chevrolet. free point's connection to a brisbane missing person's case began sunday night. fishermen found a woman's torso near the pier. tuesday night, investigators searched for additional body parts, picking up what appeared to be more remains last night.

sources say a woman's extremity. just after 9:00 p.m., reports of a bay bridge jumper. the victim was identified through fingerprints as 62-year-old paul, shelly's husband. >> i'm devastated. >> reporter: "abc7 news" spoke with shelly's brother on the phone who said he felt suspicious about his brother-in-law. >> made me think he was holding back information. >> reporter: still, he says he hopes on to some hope shelly could be out here. dna evidence will likely determine the answer. i asked police whether or not they have positively identified the human remains. a spokesperson for the department did not answer that question specifically, but she did tell me there will be an update tonight. as soon as we have that update, we'll bring it to you. >> thank you, melanie. now to the investigation involving four oakland police

officers for what they allegedly did off duty involving a party and a lot of alcohol. a news conference has just wrapped up. eric thomas is live in oakland with the story. eric? >> reporter: that news conference was with an oakland couple who say they were terrorized december 7 by two drunken men they later found out were police officers. they appeared with their attorney who had filed a game against the police department. law enforcement sources tell "abc7 news" the trouble began with a party on tonken street. a couple of police officers attending went outside and, according to police reports, when they tried to go back inside, they were going into the wrong house. the cortez's house. one officer was banging on the door, screaming obscenities. at one point, even grabbed her in a bear hug and both fell to

the ground. while dealing with the first man, the couple says they saw a second man coming out of their backyard, carrying what appeared to be a gun. >> i could see the look on his face. i was terrified. i looked back to my daughter and see my children crying and they were scared. i just wanted them to be safe. >> she tried to get information about who the officers were, and she was essentially stone walled all along the way. >> reporter: she's a probation officer. one officer was arrested on the night of december 7. his name is colin faith. law enforcement sources tell us he has been fired from the police department, and a packet of evidence has been turned over from internal affairs to the d.a.'s office to see if official charges should be filed. sources tell us that other

officers, at least two others, are being investigated for possibly trying to cover this whole incident up. so a total of four officers potentially under investigation in what appears to be a really tragic case of mistaken identity. eric thomas, "abc7 news." >> thank you very much. a family just spent four days driving across america, only to have almost everything they have stolen in oakland. one of the items is irreplaceable. you can see an empty parking space that had been occupied by a rental van. they rented it in baltimore. featherstone parked the van last night and it was gone this morning. gone with the van and an urn containing the ashes of his infant daughter who died many years ago. >> the stuff that was in the trunk, that can be replaced, but my daughter's ashes, that is dear to me and my family. if you can return it, that's fine. >> that's all he's asking for.

if you know anything, police want to hear from you. this is the day of reckoning for leeland yee, the disgraced san francisco politician received five years for racketeering. vic lee is live in the newsroom. the sentence could have been a lot harsher. >> reporter: it could have been. there was an air of finality today for leeland ye who has had a long career in politics. he said he caused pain to his family, friends and constituents, then asked for compassion from the court. finally it was over. each now as he left the courthouse, mobbed by reporters, he maintained his silence. the disgraced senator was among dozens arrested two years ago after a long fbi sting. he was the big fish, the big catch. his charge, racketeering. specifically money laundering, gun running and accepting

bribes. his attorney told the judge his client shouldn't be overpunished just because he's a politician. he pleaded for leniency. i take full responsibility for this. i accept my crimes. i am asking for leniency. i hope you look at my entire life and not just the crimes i committed. the judge didn't buy that. the crimes you committed were an attack on our democratic institutions. mr. ye, you abused that trust. these are very serious abuses he said. the most significant crime was that your vote was for sale. the prosecution wanted him to go to prison for eight years. the judge gave him five. he rushed out of the courthouse, but his lawyer did say this. >> he's remorseful and tired of humiliating his family and he's tired of this, what i would call a circus. >> reporter: many supporters

came to court today disappointed at the sentence. among them -- >> it doesn't tell all the good things he's done over the years of public service. >> reporter: three others who pleaded guilty to racketeering also received sentences today. the former san francisco school board president got nine years in prison. his son, brandon, will go to prison for 5 1/2 years. and sports agent marlin sullivan got 4 1/2 years. vic lee, "abc7 news." tonight, interim san jose police chief eddie garcia is well on his way to becoming the full-time head of the department. he is the selection to be the next police chief. several employees were quarantined at the customs and border office after an agent opened an envelope with powder

inside. lyanne melendez is there live to explain what happened. >> reporter: we now know that nothing was found inside that building. still, three employees complained of dizziness and nausea. let's go up to sky 7 hd. you can see the response teams outside the building. they were here for about four hours. employees from the u.s. customs and border protection were all evaluated after an employee discovered with some powdery substances. this woman was later taken to the hospital. haz/mat crews who went inside had to be decontaminated just as a precautionary measure. >> initially, when the person opened the envelope, they then

cupertino, concord, wine country, and all the bay area, this is "abc7 news." you're looking at palo alto police. the search forced four schools to go into lockdown mode for a short time just before noon. police say a man had outstanding arrest warrants and ran from officers into a mobile home park and, as you can see there, the man eventually came out with his hands up. palo alto police are still searching for two men who robbed a movie theater at gunpoint. chris nguyen has this story. >> reporter: kristen, the theater is back open for business today. we can report that no one was

hurt. but workers in this complex say they're going to be extra vigilant because of what happened last night. at palo alto square, off el camino real -- >> most people don't even know the theater is here. >> reporter: police say two men armed with hand guns armed two employees here just after 10:00 last night. >> why would they pick a movie theater? there's not going to be much to take. >> reporter: the incident happened after the movies finished playing. they were inside the lobby cleaning up when they came in, pointed their guns and demanded to be taken to the safe. when the suspects didn't see much money, they fled on foot. but some say they weren't surprised the theater was targeted. >> this place is isolated, so it is an easy target to come in and grab something. >> reporter: they described the first suspect as a hispanic man in his 20s, bearing a black

hoodie, black hoods and a black mask. the second suspect is a black man in his 20s about six feet tall. he was wearing all black similar to the first suspect. police tell us this is the first time in recent history a movie theater has been held up in palo alto. >> i've been here for 15 years in this complex. i've worked here and i always felt safe coming to work. now not so much. >> reporter: others believe it's important to move forward. >> you have to live your life. >> reporter: anyone with information is urged to call palo alto police. chris nguyen, "abc7 news." stanford university just received its biggest cash donation ever, setting up the world's largest scholarship program. stanford's new program will help graduate level students pursue work in areas such as leadership and innovation with the goal of

tackling global challenges affecting the environment, health, education, and human rights. it will be larger in scope than the rhodes scholar program at england's oxford university. the $400 million donation came from nike co-founder phil nike. a dramatic change could be coming to oakland's skyline and to the city's uptown district. the plan was approved to build this high rise. it's planned on telegraph avenue at 19th street. it calls for 330 apartments, 60 designated as affordable. >> one of the things we're determined to do is stop that displacement and make sure that everybody benefits from the rising tide of prosperity. >> the building will be the first oakland high rise built in

ten years if approved by the council next month. developers are flocking to the city, hoping to benefit from a red hot real estate market. facebook today rolled out five new buttons users can click when responding to a post. the new reactions are love, ha ha, wow, sad, and angry. ceo mark zuckerberg says the new reactions will make it easier for everyone to share a wider range of emotions. he says love is the most popular one so far. this story is a wild one. new dietary guidelines urge us to cut back on sugar, but the amount of sweeteners can often be hidden. >> michael finney has that story. >> do you think you know where the sugar is? sugar coming from things that you would least expect. and it could be harming your

a malnourished young sea lion that was rescued monday is recuperating in a new habitat. "abc7 news" was at the marine mammal center where the pup was brought in this morning. the year-old male see lion under went a medical exam by vets. staff members believe it's been days or weeks since it ate. >> sometimes when they come in that way, they're using their last bit of energy to try to make it. so fortunately, we can see many of them turn around with good nutrition. >> the pup will be given a dose of antibiotics to treat abscesses. a rescue team is releasing
