area woman goes missing. a headless torso surfaces along an east bay pier and the missing woman's husband jumps off the bay bridge. fremont police say these three events may be connected. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. as we were first to report, fremont police spent the day at the brisbane home of the woman who disappeared. this happened hours after her husband jumped off the bay bridge. >> lilian kim is live in brisbane with the latest on this very strange story. lilian? >> reporter: dan and ama, this is where shelly lived with her husband. a relationship that neighbors say was a volatile one. when 50-year-old shelly was reported missing a week and a half ago her husband, paul, lead efforts to find her. but tuesday night he committed suicide. he jumped off the bay bridge. turns out he was a person of interest in his wife's disappearance and they want to know if the female torso found near the pier on sunday was

his wife and whether he was behind it. abc7 news was the only one on the scene when fremont police stormed the home in brisbane in hopes to finding clues. neighbors heard shouting come from the house over the years, but all of this is still a shock. dede porter lives next door and was the last one to see them both alive. >> none of us can construct the scenario in our head that makes sense. they were nice neighbors. he was a nice, respectful client guy. >> shelly's brother had suspicions. he spoke to abc7 news over the phone. >> he was holding back information. >> they leave behind two sons. this evening one of them wrote on facebook "my mother shelly and my father paul have

recently passed. i hope you will all respect the privacy of my family and i. thank you to everyone who supported us in the search for my mother." in brisbane, lilian kim, abc7 news. hayward police arrested this man for the murder of stacy aguillar. the san jose woman disappeared after she left a party with her boyfriend more than a week ago. her body was discovered saturday afternoon in the east bay hills. the victim's mother says pedraza was aguillar's boyfriend. breaking news, a rare shooting in larkspur near the larkspur theater. it happened around 7:00 p.m. moviegoers were told to remain inside briefly. they say it happened after a dispute in a parking lot. they are looking for two men who left in an suv or cross over vehicle. the victim is expected to be released from the hospital soon. parents are just being notified of unsafe levels of lead in water at an elementary

school. they turned off drinking fountains after a company tested them in november. they also made bottled water available to students. a state lab will test the water from the fountains. also new at 11:00, a warning from south san francisco police tonight. someone sent a letter reporting threats against students and staff at both south san francisco and el camino high school. police haven't confirmed whether these threats are valid. both schools will remain open with extra security measures in place for the rest of the week. if parents wish to keep their children at home their absences, we are told, will be excused. >> residents of the bay view district had their first chance to tell federal officials about their concerns with local police . abc7 news was at thurgood marshall high school when they called to fire him.

officers say he refused to drop a knife. cell phone video captured the shooting. >> you call yourselves trying to de escalate this, it didn't happen. when the boy reached down to talk you didn't pay him no attention. >> the u.s. justice department launched an independent review of san francisco police earlier this month. new at 11:00, from the east bay, friends and family from the pittsburgh officer who died after shooting a shoplifter paid their respects. abc7 news reporter alan wang is live where his wake was held. alan? >> reporter: in 25 years of reporting i have never seen anything like this before. a community that loved their police officers so much they decorated his squad car after his passing. even people arrested by him had good things to say about

the officer. . >> he was just real easy to deal with. >> reporter: it is not often you will run into someone who will say this about the cop who arrested them. >> rather been him i have to deal with over someone else. >> reporter: he was arrested for having outstanding warrants. he never took away his dignity. a stream of people from all walks of life poured into the chapel to say goodbye. >> he actually gave us respect and stuff. he was well respected. >> he died from a heart attack chasing a shoplifter. he was working a second job as a loss prevention officer at macy's. for 15 years he patrolled the el pew pueblo area. he didn't just patrol it. he embraced it. >> he would get out and play basketball with the kids. he would get to know the community. >> reporter: last christmas he bought gifts for people in the neighborhood who needed them. >> he didn't have to use

faruk. authorities believe he used the phone to communicate with his wife and accomplice. the phone could hold information on other plots or terrorists involved in the san bernadino attack. >> david, if we knew a way to get the information on the phone we haven't already given, if we knew a way to do that that would not expose hundred of millions of other people issues we would do it. >> the matter of privacy and public safety. apple would have to write new software to unlock the encrypted phone. >> we view as the software equivalent of cancer. we think it is bad news to write. we would never write it and we have never written it. >> do you have any concern that you might be able to prevent a terrorist attack by breaking into that phone? >> david some things are hard and some things are right and some things are both. this is one of those things. >> the national debate continues. cornell bernard, abc7 news.

abc7 news reporter wayne freedman spoke to that man after he left the hospital. >> it is the best feeling in the world. it is the best feeling when i found out i was being released after all these years. it made me almost jump up and down and i can't walk jie. this was luther jones one week ago. the california department of corrections released him from a prison hospital after serving 18 years of a 27-year sentence for a crime he did not commit. the cdc sent luther to his son's home in kelseyville. it dropped him off in an ambulance and left. within 24 hours luther lost consciousness. >> they just told me he kidney failure, liver failure and diabetes and he goes through dialysis. >> did they say he needed to be in a hospital? >> no, they didn't. >> should they have? >> they shouldn't have released him from the hospital. >> luther jones did not regain

consciousness until saturday in the intensive care ward. his family has no money to pay the medical bills, but the state does owe $140 for every day of those 18 years wrongfully imprisoned. angela carter hopes that money comes fast. >> what would be fast? >> to me fast would be as soon as the claim is filed. >> there is no guarantee of that and there could be a civil case based on how the california department of corrections handled luther jones' release. >> i was put outside the gate and left and almost died. i just almost died. >> so luther jones is at his son's house and hopefully in better health than the last time he arrived. as for the little girl who was forced to testify against him in the original trial, the district attorney is looking at charging her with a felony. wayne freedman, abc7 news.

the federal government is trying to bail out businesses affected by the dungeness crab. abc7 news was at san francisco's fisherman's wharf where the small business administration is offering 4% loans. they will set up in half moon bay tomorrow and friday. the abc7 news eye team has new information about a controversial police shooting in san francisco two years ago. the witness claims alex had his hands in his jacket pockets when police fired 48 shots killing him. officers thought he aimed a gun at them and it was a taser. dan noyes has the inside story on the case headed to a jury next week. >> no coffee pot for you, germany. the country's second largest city, hamburg, wants to be the first in the world to ban single ice coffee pots.

right now the ban would be in government buildings. estimates say there are enough of them buried in landfills to circle the earth 12 times. >> that's a staggering figure. >> let's talk about the weather forecast. >> sandhya patel is here with what's in store. sandhya? >> we might see some scattered showers around here. live doppler 7hd is showing you clear conditions except for a few clouds that formed near half moon bay. the temperatures are mostly in the 50s. san francisco is pretty mild at 60 degrees. a few 40s in novato and half moon bay. we look all the way across the bay and the visibility is great. coastal fog, mild near the bay. we are looking at cooler conditions and there is another slight chance on sunday. just when you were getting used to the spring like weather it is changing. the temperature trend the next few days.

you look at tomorrow and it is mild and above average like it was today. numbers in the low 70s for san francisco, santa rosa and oakland. 74 in livermore and 66 in half moon bay. going down. san jose 75. look at friday. you are dropping anywhere from 4 to 8 degrees and you will feel it. high surf advisory until 3:00 a.m. the wave heights continue in the 11 to 14-foot range. it is until the wee hours of tomorrow morning. it has been an unusually dry february for an el el nino. so far this month santa rosa has not received anywhere close, three quarters of an inch. san francisco just over an inch this year. in 98 it was different and if you were around many of us remember the strong event more than 10 inches for february in san jose. so far a third of an inch.

i can't bring you a big el nino storm, but i can bring you back encouraging news. we have been ranking these storms from 1:00 to 5:00 and this has been something that we have been doing. it is a one. it is a light system for your friday. scattered showers and less than a 10th of an inch. look at your hour by hour time line. it is not only fog, but clouds around. it will be a cooler day. it will be noticible. then we head into the afternoon. a few showers develop at 4:00 p.m. by 5:00 p.m. evening rush will include wet roadways. san francisco and the paw peninsula and it makes it to the south by by around 7:00 p.m. and then it is all done. it is a quick mover. we'll get showers out of it and not much wind, but it will certainly slow down your evening commute and your friday evening get away. low 40s to low 50s tomorrow morning and we will see a couple patches of fog, but most of the fog will wait until the afternoon to come back into the picture.
