attorneys say he is. the officer involved is now on administrative leave. also caught on camera, this incident from a high school in nashville. a student assaulting a teacher in the hallway. witnesses said that the 17-year-old student attacked the teacher without provocation. the teen later tried to flee the scene. he's facing assault and other charges. this is our america's greatest home video block. because we have another surveillance video. one which is playing a major role in the case of three female college students who claimed to have been victims of a racially motivated attack on a city bus in albany, new york. >> the story of the attack ignited a national uproar. but police say the new video shows a very different story. here's abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: three college students under fire for what's seen in this surveillance video. >> i'd like to report the fact that me and my friends were just jumped on a bus for being black. >> reporter: just after 1:00 a.m. on april 30th, ariel agudio, alexis briggs and

ashaburwell, all 20-year-old college students at the university of albany, claiming they were the only black students on a city bus when they were called racial slurs and hit by several boys. surrounded by white students and feeling threatened, they fought back. two of the girls called 911. >> it was a racially fueled time. we were three black girls shoved jumped by like 20 white people. >> reporter: the university and city officially launching an investigation, leading to the release of this video. surveillance from inside the bus that night. >> it definitely looks like it wasn't what the girls said it was that happened. >> reporter: this week all three girls in court pleading not guilty to charges of third-degree assault. burwell and agudio also charged with falsely reporting an accident. incident. and the videos alone don't make clear exactly what happened or even what triggered that fight. but police are now trying to enhance the audio on those videos to try to figure it all out. gio benitez, abc news, albany, new york. > gio will have more on that on "gma" a little bit later on

good morning. good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm reena ninan. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." protesters clash outside the supreme court as justices hear arguments in the most significant abortion case in 25 years. at issue is a texas law requiring doctors who perform abortions to have hospital admitting privileges within 30 miles. full details in a moment. breaking overnight, north korea fired a series of missiles from its east coast this morning. those launches came just hours after the u.n. approved the toughest sanctions against north korea in two decades. could it be from flight 370? debris that washed up in mozambique has been tentatively identified as a part from the same type of jet. the flight disappeared two years ago with 239 people on board.

and at least three suspects have been arrested in this brazen smash and grab robbery at a gun store. this is in houston. involving as many as ten robbers. surveillance video shows them getting away with at least 50 weapons in under two minutes. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, march 3rd. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everyone. we begin this half hour with that emotional battle outside the supreme court. protesters clashing as justices heard arguments in a high-profile abortion case. >> at issue is whether the state of texas can strictly regulate clinics where abortions are performed. abc's gloria riviera has more. >> reporter: separated by just a few feet, but they stand a world apart. >> is it your body? >> no. >> reporter: outside the supreme court, passions inflamed on both sides of america's most enduring culture war.

while inside the most important abortion case being considered in a generation. >> improve patient safety. that's what these laws have been about. >> they won't promote women's health. they're going to make abortion less safe. >> reporter: arguing that controversial texas law that regulates abortion clinics as unconstitutional is stephanie totie. it's her first time at the nation's highest court. but with her some star power support. >> i realized the next generation may have less choice than i did. >> reporter: judging amy and left overs actress amy brenneman along with more than 40 women lent their names to the case saying their right to have an abortion has allowed them to lead healthier, happier lives. this week brenneman opened up about her own abortion story in this emotional video posted to youtube. >> i feel so blessed i was in a place where i wasn't shamed and i was supported. >> reporter: she says the stigma associated with abortion can

only end if women come out of the shadows. among other restrictions the law requires that abortion clinics are more like surgical centers and that doctors have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. critics of the law say adhering to the new standards make it impossible for many abortion providers to remain open especially in a state the size of texas. >> millions of women in texas and other states across the region are at risk of losing their constitutional right to access safe abortion care. >> reporter: and since the law was enacted, half of the abortion clinics in texas have closed. in a new documentary "trapped," doctors and nurses at whole women's health, one of the texas abortion clinics that's challenging, share stories about how they had to turn away women in need. >> there's a two or three-week waiting list for a procedure where time is of the essence.

>> i remember getting a call from a patient once and she said, what if i tell you what i have in my kitchen cabinet and you tell me what i can do. >> reporter: but those on the other side of this issue say that the texas law and others like it are designed to protect women's health. >> pro-woman! pro-life! >> reporter: anti-abortion activists also submitting briefs to the court citing 3,000 women they say suffered grievous psychological injuries after their abortions. the case rests in the hands of the eight remaining justices. but no matter the ruling, we'll likely see this scene play out again and again. >> pro-woman! pro-life! >> reporter: this battle isn't ending anytime soon. i'm gloria riviera in washington, d.c. in the meantime, in the race for the white house, ted cruz is using that vacancy on the supreme court as ammunition against donald trump. cruz told supporters in kansas that if trump is elected, he

will work with senate democrats to replace justice antonin scalia. cruz insists that would clear the way to fill the seat with a liberal. and trump's seven-state run on super tuesday is prompting the republican establishment to step up efforts to try to stop him. today former gop nominee mitt romney delivering a major speech in utah on the presidential race to lay out his case against trump. and a slew of top republican donors and conservative groups are planning to blanket the airwaves with anti-trump ads. the republicans will have one less candidate on stage when they go head to head in detroit tonight. ben carson says he sees no political path forward. following his dismal super tuesday results, carson will not take part in the debate, but he hasn't officially dropped out yet. he plans to make an announcement tomorrow. to the democrats now and hillary clinton still celebrating in new york after her super tuesday victory.

she held a rally followed by a star-studded concert. she was joined by big names, you see there, elton john, that's katy perry there. clinton's campaign saying bernie sanders doesn't have the math to defeat her. more now from cecilia vega. >> reporter: hillary clinton on a victory lap. >> yesterday was one for the history books. >> reporter: but clinton now laser-focused on the very man whose wedding she once attended, who gave money to her senate campaign -- donald trump. >> you know, the stakes in this election have never been higher and the rhetoric from the other side has never been lower. >> reporter: in her victory speech, clinton never once mentioning trump's name, but her message was clear. >> we know we've got work to do. but that work -- that work is not to make america great again. america never stopped being great. >> reporter: turning trump's "make america great again" slogan into a full-blown attack. >> we have to make america whole. we have to fill in.

a large margin. the clinton team thinks they might have this nomination wrapped up in a couple of weeks. cecilia vega, abc news, new york. notorious mexican drug lord el chapo is looking for a plea deal from u.s. prosecutors. according to one of his lawyers, el chapo is willing to plead guilty to any charges in exchange for a short stay at a medium security u.s. prison. lawyers say el chapo wants to escape the harsh conditions in his mexican jail. he says the guards won't let him sleep. experts say any talk of a deal here in the u.s. is very premature. that's tough. >> that is rough. >> he can't sleep. the florida teenager accused of pretending to be a doctor has been arrested again. malachi love-robinson has been ordered to undergo a mental health exam following an arrest for larceny. and using someone else's identification. the 18-year-old was arrested last month for practicing medicine without a license after he opened a clinic in west palm beach. lots of concerned fans of the reality show "deadliest catch" this morning amid reports that one of the show's captains have been hospitalized.

sig hansen is known for manning the helm of the "northwestern" often while smoking. the show's producers say he suffered chest pains while at sea. the boat's crew insisted they head to port for help. hansen was then airlifted to a hospital in anchorage. he's said to be with family and in good spirits. sports authority has filed for bankruptcy and announced plans to close or sell about 140 stores. you like the sneakers from there, don't you? >> i like their stuff. >> the retailer admitted it lost market share to online retailers and gotten mired in debt so it also failed to keep up with trends like golfing's declining popularity. >> i didn't know that either. some history will be made at the opening ceremony of this summer's olympic games. that's when a team of refugee athletes will enter the stadium under the olympic flag and then compete in the games just like all the other teams. although it's not clear what sports the athletes will take part in, at this point they are still being identified. the games start august 5th in rio.

the pentagon opened its own competition for computer hackers. the hackers have been vetted and invited to test the cybersecurity of some of the pentagon's public websites. many big companies run similar programs as a way of allowing experts to find and identify problems before malicious hackers can exploit them. here's one for the city slickers in our growing audience. her shot by her stalker in her hotel room and posted online continues to expose her. here's abc's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: erin andrews' legal battle for $75 million in damages from the nashville marriott and the man who secretly recorded her getting out of the shower continues. >> and to try to explain to someone that has questions about why i have trust issues, why i'm insecure, why i'm humiliated -- >> reporter: one of the key players in this case, neal peskind, a representative of the owner of the nashville marriott was dining with friends when a restaurant employee tweeted that the group was looking at the nude video. nicole branigan posting, he said, if it was going to cost him millions, he was going to watch it and show everyone. then, he and his guests proceeded to discuss her body. peskind releasing this statement explaining that his friends started viewing the video.

slipped the surly bonds of earth, scott kelly is finally home. overnight, his soyuz capsule splashed down in kazakhstan, kelly testing the earth's gravity with a fist bump. >> i felt like i had been up there my whole life. >> reporter: in an odd way, he has. in one year of zero gravity, he circled the earth more than 5,000 times. that's 15 years of sunrises. you could say that now makes him 15 years older than his identical twin brother, retired astronaut mark kelly. but albert einstein would argue the opposite. einstein's twin paradox maintained that a twin hurtling through space on a rocket ship would age more slowly than the twin remaining on earth. another difference, scott is now apparently two inches taller. his spine likely stretched in while he was in orbit. nasa will now be studying that, comparing the two.

down and the gop establishment is scrambling to block trump before he clinches the nomination. it's your voice, your vote. abc's stephanie ramos has the latest on both sides. >> reporter: super tuesday is over with the front-runners cementing their leads. >> boy, am i glad it worked out so well! yesterday was one for the history books. >> reporter: hillary clinton celebrating her big super tuesday win with a big rally in new york. she took 7 of the 11 states. bernie sanders took the other four. and says despite the overall loss, he can still win the democratic nomination. >> quote, all the pundits are calling the race for clinton. that means we're probably going to win in a landslide. >> reporter: after his big night, donald trump promising he is the candidate to bring the republican party together. >> i am a unifier. once we get all of this finished, i'm going to go after one person. that's hillary clinton. >> reporter: trump also claiming

victories in seven super tuesday states, making it much harder for his rivals to catch up. >> we are picking up delegates. we continue to gain delegates throughout the day. >> reporter: marco rubio winning his first and only state, minimum. and ted cruz grabbing the most votes in oklahoma, alaska and his home state of texas. cruz calling on the remaining candidates to back him up. so far that doesn't appear to be happening. > if you've been supporting another candidate, we welcome you on our team. >> reporter: the one-time front-runner, dr. ben carson, telling supporters he no longer sees a path forward in his campaign. several republicans are banding together to try to stop trump. first in line, former gop nominee mitt romney. he is set to lay out a case against the billionaire. kendis, back to you. >> thank you. the republican candidates will face off again tonight in detroit. fox news anchor megyn kelly will be one of the moderators. despite her past clashes with trump, his campaign says he is looking forward to participating. and kelly says she doesn't

expect another flare-up. trump boycotted the fox debate ahead of the iowa caucuses after demanding that kelly be ousted from the lineup. new details in the fbi investigation into hillary clinton's use of a private e-mail server. the justice department has granted immunity to the former state department staffer who set up the server according to the washington post. the fbi is looking into the possible mishandling of classified information. a probe is expected to take several more months. protesters clashed outside the supreme court as the justices debated a most significant abortion case in nearly 25 years. at issue is a texas law strictly regulating abortion clinics, forcing providers to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and making clinics meet standards for surgical centers. the death of justice antonin scalia leaves the court evenly split with justice anthony kennedy holding the swing vote. half the state's abortion clinics have closed.

and only about ten would remain if the law would be allowed to take full effect. a man accused of abducting and killing two virginia college students has pleaded guilty in order to escape the death penalty. jesse matthew jr. agreed to a sentence of four consecutive life terms with no chance for parole. matthew murdered virginia tech junior morgan harrington in 2009 and uva sophomore hannah graham two years ago. he's already serving life for a separate rape case. a manhunt is under way in mississippi for a murder suspect who escaped jail in vicksburg. rafael mccloud briefly took a jail employee hostage using a shank yesterday morning, stole the employee's clothes and left the jail. he's accused of kidnapping and killing a 69-year-old woman. a conviction could bring the death penalty. also in the south, they're picking up pieces after several damaging tornadoes tore through. abc's steve osunsami reports from alabama. >> reporter: this is what's left of pine valley drive south of birmingham.

the view from the alabama sky shows the roofs peeled off homes and the giant trees pushed on top of them. the tornadoes set off sirens just after supper. the weather service now says there were two of them tearing through the state, the strongest that ef-2, with wind speeds near 125 miles an hour. grant sims says he could hear the flying 2x4s punch holes in his house. >> and the wind, you know, it just sounded like it was coming straight through -- straight through the house. >> reporter: it got so bad, the election precincts nearby had to stop the voting. ben allison and his wife ran for the laundry room. >> got on top of her and i heard my roof leave. >> reporter: families here in alabama say that all this happened in an instant. and much of this material here came from the attics of these homes. steve osunsami, bessemer, alabama. now, there's something of a problem for the ceremonial start of this year's iditarod sled dog race. there's not enough snow, in

anchorage, of all places. this was the event last year. it usually winds its way through the streets of city along an 11 mile course. but temperatures this weekend will be in the upper 30s. and the lack of snow has forced saturday's event to be shortened to three miles. the official start of the famous sled dog race is sunday. and speaking of snow, american skier lindsey vonn won't be on it again this season. she crashed saturday during a race in europe, but was back racing the next day. instead of a less serious injury, she says she suffered three significant breaks where her shin bone meets her knee joint. she says instead of risking further damage, she will sit out the rest of the season. >> must have been a hard decision to make. i'm glad she's going to take care of that. >> it sounds painful. it was a festive mood at the white house when president obama welcomed the champions of college football. >> roll 'em tide. the alabama crimson tide were back to mark their fourth national title in seven years.

million was robbed on interstate 95 in north carolina last year. well, alberto perez was arrested at his home in the miami area after a raid yesterday morning. his connection to the robbery, though, remains unclear. a dramatic robbery in houston, texas, has been caught on surveillance video involving as many as ten suspects. >> the group raided a gun store making off with at least 50 weapons. this morning, several of those suspects are under arrest. abc's clayton sandell with the latest. >> reporter: with speed and precision that would impress the crew of "ocean's 11," this dangerous crew, call them the houston ten, shows up at 4:30 a.m. tuesday outside a houston gun store, heads and faces covered. within one minute, 19 seconds, using a chain and a pickup truck, tires squealing to rip the doors off the hinges. they mobilize inside. this thief jumps the counter, ignoring other guns and goes

straight for an assault rifle. others take armfuls of rifles and shotguns. the hammer man moves down a row of glass cases, smashing as he goes. others follow right behind, filling bags full of handguns. >> what it potentially means is, you've got that many people now distributing firearms on the streets of houston. >> reporter: from break-in to the last man out, one minute, 11 seconds. more than 50 weapons gone. a block away, the thieves switch cars. police say several suspects have now been arrested and at least some of those stolen guns are now off the street. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> even though they've taken those guys off the streets, they're still offering a $5,000 reward if you have any information to call the police. >> dramatic scenes right there. coming up in our next half hour. a new uproar over an alleged racial attack. three female college students claim to be victims of a racially motivated attack, but on a city bus in upstate new york, but now surveillance video appears to tell a very different story. first, saving food to save the planet.

my name is eddie metcalf. i enjoworking in my yard and you know, i can't. i can't do that any more,'cuz i'm missing most of my lung. they did a cat scan of my kidneys, no more kidney stones. that's the good news. consider our coming together. uniting. >> reporter: right now, that's not happening, which is why top republicans are sharpening their knives in a last-ditch effort to stop trump. mitt romney delivering a major speech, laying out the case against the billionaire. piling on? a slew of top republican donors and conservative groups, planning to blanket the air waves with anti-trump ads. >> trump picks on workers and widows. he won't do a thing to china and mexico. >> reporter: on super tuesday, trump in his palatial palm beach golf club, watching election returns. his campaign juggernaut rolling on and over his opponents. dr. ben carson indicating he'll soon drop out. right now, the only establishment name in trump's corner, new jersey governor chris christie. so many people examining his face standing behind the billionaire. six new jersey papers calling on christie to resign, writing, we're fed up with governor chris christie's arrogance.

we're disgusted with his endorsement of donald trump. what an embarrassment. what an utter disgrace. donald trump, brushing it all off, setting his sights on hillary clinton. >> she wants to make america whole again. and i'm trying to figure out what is that all about? make america great again is going to be much better than making america whole again. >> reporter: but what many people are talking about, what many people are watching, donald trump will be face-to-face with one of his biggest enemies, fox news' megyn kelly. you'll remember they had that epic war of words in the first debate of this campaign season. tom llamas, abc news, shelby township, michigan. >> let's talk about the democrats because super tuesday also pushed hillary clinton a big step closer to the democratic nomination and she has a lot of star power on her side. elton john performed at a fund-raiser concert for clinton last night at radio city music hall in new york city. katy perry also took the stage to belt out a string of hits, including "roar." and there were appearances by singer andrew day, jamie foxx, julianne moore. tickets went for as much as $2700.

it's not clear, though, how much money they raised last night. bernie sanders is also raking in a steady stream of donations, mostly from small money contributors. referring to his four wins on super tuesday, sanders said he had an extraordinary night. he told a raucous crowd in portland, maine, that hillary clinton is not so inevitable. and he said since the pundits are calling the nomination for hillary clinton, that means he will probably win by a landslide. turning overseas, breaking news about north korea. the communist country firing off at least six short-range missiles this morning. those launches came just hours after the u.n. security council approved the toughest sanctions against north korea in two decades. the new sanctions are in response to the north's recent nuclear tests and a long-range rocket launch. u.s. special operations forces have captured their first significant isis operative. an american official confirms that the detainee is now being interrogated at a temporary detention facility in northern iraq. the detainee has not been identified.

debris that washed up in africa appears to be from a boeing 777, and that's the same type of jet as missing malaysia airlines flight 370. we've learned an american says that he found it. seattle resident blaine gibson says he chartered a boat to search a remote sandbar for possible debris. he's made similar searches in other parts of the world. another part from the missing plane was found last july. flight 370 vanished nearly two years ago. back here at home, police in oklahoma city say it's too early to tell if the death of a natural gas industry heavyweight was intentional. 56-year-old aubrey mcclendon was killed in a fiery single car crash. his suv slammed into a concrete bridge embankment. that was yesterday morning at more than 50 miles an hour. mcclendon was not wearing a seat belt. his death came one day after he was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly conspireing

to rig bids for oil and natural gas leases. mcclendon denied wrongdoing in the case. starting next month, passengers will no longer be able to vape while flying. the transportation department announced yesterday the use of electronic cigarettes on airplanes will be banned. the transportation secretary said the new rule will protect passengers from unwanted fumes. safety experts had also expressed concerns about explosions caused by the batteries in e-cigarettes. >> not going to let me take my makeup remover that's more than eight ounces, but you can -- >> apparently you can still vape now. >> who knew. new video just in showing a very determined clerk in georgia fighting off an armed robber. take a look at the 17-year-old suspect pointing a gun directly at the clerk demanding money. but she's not having any of it. grabs the gun, tries to wrestle it and slams the guy in the head with the cash register drawer. then she brought out the hammer that sent the would-be burglar running away. look at her. >> don't do that.

attorneys say he is. the officer involved is now on administrative leave. also caught on camera, this incident from a high school in nashville. a student assaulting a teacher in the hallway. witnesses said that the 17-year-old student attacked the teacher without provocation. the teen later tried to flee the scene. he's facing assault and other charges. this is our america's greatest home video block. because we have another surveillance video. one which is playing a major role in the case of three female college students who claimed to have been victims of a racially motivated attack on a city bus in albany, new york. >> the story of the attack ignited a national uproar. but police say the new video shows a very different story. here's abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: three college students under fire for what's seen in this surveillance video. >> i'd like to report the fact that me and my friends were just jumped on a bus for being black. >> reporter: just after 1:00 a.m. on april 30th, ariel agudio, alexis briggs and

ashaburwell, all 20-year-old college students at the university of albany, claiming they were the only black students on a city bus when they were called racial slurs and hit by several boys. surrounded by white students and feeling threatened, they fought back. two of the girls called 911. >> it was a racially fueled time. we were three black girls shoved jumped by like 20 white people. >> reporter: the university and city officially launching an investigation, leading to the release of this video. surveillance from inside the bus that night. >> it definitely looks like it wasn't what the girls said it was that happened. >> reporter: this week all three girls in court pleading not guilty to charges of third-degree assault. burwell and agudio also charged with falsely reporting an accident. incident. and the videos alone don't make clear exactly what happened or even what triggered that fight. but police are now trying to enhance the audio on those videos to try to figure it all out. gio benitez, abc news, albany, new york. > gio will have more on that on "gma" a little bit later on
