>> the unit is still in lockdown mode this evening. inmates are being ordered to stay in their cells. sheriff laurie smith says no guards were hurt trying to break up this fight. >> and she just told us that it's a coincidence that the fight happened in this part of the jail where she had just put in new security cameras and had them installed yesterday. >> but that's where we installed the cameras. we don't have cameras in any of the other housing areas, and they only went in last night. it's interesting that it happened here. >> outside the jail this afternoon, we saw hazmat crews as they were called in to help clean off blood from the floor where the fighting broke out. sheriff smith says deputies used pepper spray against the inmates, and that needed to be cleaned up. >> those cameras were purchased by the sheriff herself at costco of all places. she paid for them with her own credit card after a learning a county plan to add cameras would take two years. now to a story many of you

have been waiting two years to hear. testimony sheds new light on what led up to the fatal police shooting in a san francisco park. [ gunshots ] [ bleep ]. >> hear the gunfire? >> that's the 911 call which captured the sound of gunshots fired by san francisco police which killed 20-year-old alex nieto at vernal heights park. he is 28 years old. >> that 911 call was played in federal court today during the trial of a wrongful death lawsuit brought by nieto's parents. >> dan noyes is back from court tonight. >> reporter: it was the most gripping day so far. not a good one for police. we finally heard from the man who set the wheels in motion that night by calling 911. justin fritz testified in san francisco federal court on the evening of march 21st, 2014, he and his partner were walking their bulldog and springer spaniel on bernall heights park when they spotted a suspicious person. >> this is san francisco 911s or

and called 911. the operator asked for a description. >> he had a red jacket. probably 200 pounds. >> what race is he? >> race? >> is he hispanic? >> he looks like he may be hispanic. >> reporter: and fritz stated without equivocation, the man had a gun. >> the gun is visible? >> yeah. >> what type of gun is it? is it a handgun? >> it looks like a black handgun. >> but justin fritz never saw alex nieto ever saw any kind of weapon. he was conveying what his partner said and was practicing his draw by pulling it again and again like this. they apparently didn't see these yellow stripes indicating it was a taser. this is the same model nieto had that night. he used the taser for his job as a nightclub bouncer where he was headed. on the stand he said he was pacing back and forth in front of his chain-link fence, shadow-boxing and eating chips from a bag. he watched police arrive and walked away before they opened

fire. >> hear the gunfire? >> reporter: fritz was in the line of fire. bullets hit the eucalyptus tree others his heads. >> they're firing at me. they're firing at me. help, help! help! >> stay on the line. >> reporter: fritz testified he didn't hear the exchange that police described, them yelling "show me your hands" nieto yelling, no show me your hands. after his time on the stands, justin fritz apologized to alex nieto's parents saying i didn't want to hurt anyone. i'm so sorry for your loss. the father allowed fritz to hug him. the mother refused. late today, a witness took the stand saying he saw it all happen, that nieto was not aiming the taser at police, and had his hands in his jacket pockets when he went down. he'll be back on the stand in the morning, and we should also hear from the fourth officer who opened fire that day, 59 shots in all. i'll be there and tell you what happens. dan? >> more zika cases confirmed in the bay area in san francisco

and alameda counties. health is officials emphasize the disease is not circulating in the bay area. all a patients had recently traveled abroad. yesterday we learned of case confirmed in napa county. well, today's light storm just a teaser of what is expected this saturday. perhaps the most powerful storm so far this winter. spencer christian is here with that forecast. spencer, it's coming. >> it is indeed, dan. here is a look at live doppler hd. you see that? >> there we go. >> i'll step back. in we've got a large area of rainfall down in the south bay. let me close in on that and show you what is going on. from san jose down to, oh, to let's see, salinas and monterey. our scale, 1 through 5. 1 is a light storm, 5 is a severe storm. we have a big storm coming our way on saturday. it ranks number 3. it's a strong storm, ranking three on the impact scale. it will produce 1 to 3 inches of

rainfall generally, 3 to 6 inches in the hills. winds may gust over 60 miles per hour at times. and up to our north in lake county, in the area of those severe fires last year, the burn area, there is a flash flood watch in effect from 4:00 p.m. saturday to 4:00 a.m. subdivision. a possibility of flash flooding and debris flows. but for the bay area, the big storm coming our way saturday and sunday. not only produce heavy rainfall, but potentially strong damaging winds. and i'll have a closer look at that for you in just a few minutes. >> thank you. the latest data shows california's drought has improved. the dark red and the bright red colors on the map represent the worst stainings of drought. extreme and exceptional. over the past three months, the size of that area has decreased by 10 percentage points. this weekend's storm will help to improve our drought outlook. in sonoma county, agency as will actually release some water to keep a margin of safety against the local floods. wayne freedman joins us live

from healdsburg with the story. wayne? >> reporter: good evening, ama. beautiful on the russian river tonight. very beautiful. a man a walking his dog in the river a short time ago. it's calm right now. the water level is fairly low. but they are expecting to make a release very soon. and it has to do with flood safety. along the russian or any other river, every cast is an exercise in optimism, where you'll you've find rod and reel, you're likely to find a fisherman with a good reason to fish. do fish bite better when it's about to rain? >> every bite is good when they bite. >> reporter: scott of healdsburg. the last afternoon on the river before a wet month of march that could see the waters rise considerably after a release upstream at lake mendocino by the army corps of engineers. >> basically, we keep enough water in the dam as best as we can for water supply, leaving enough room for flood control. during this time of the year, it's kind of complex.

beach in mount tamalpais state park. an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. the bodies of a 62-year-old woman and a man washed ashore earlier this week. we know the identity of a man found dead in a lake at golden gate park yesterday. the body of 45-year-old joseph munoz was found around 8:00 a.m. he may have been living in sausalito or san francisco. an autopsy will be performed on him to determine how he died. caught on camera. livermore police say what a nanny cam recorded compelled them to arrest the baby-sitter, 20-year-old mariah gonzalez is charged with child abuse. investigator are working to find more potential victims. melanie is live with the story. melanie? >> reporter: well, dan, we've met quite a few parents in this neighborhood of small children, and they all tell me they are shocked and saddened by this charge. meantime, law enforcement says

there is nothing in gonzalez's past record that would have come up on a background check. mariah gonzalez is facing child abuse charges after livermore pd says the 20-year-old nanny was caught on camera. neighbors describe gonzalez as smiling and bubbly. >> i couldn't believe when i saw a picture of her that she would do something like that. >> reporter: livermore pd says gonzalez, seen here in her facebook photo, advertised her foents care.com. according to charges documents, on february 18th, gonzalez was caring for a 13 "american idol" boy. when the boy's mom came home, she discovered abuse when she watched nanny cam video. specifically, gonzalez was attempting to calm the baby. when she placed her hands closer to the baby's face, his cries went from clear and audible to muffled. the baby began to squirm and kick, and then went limp. when gonzalez moved her hand away, the baby began crying again. she then put him in his crib and left his room. >> trying to smother him? that's scary. that's really scary.

>> reporter: according to the charging documents, the baby's mother discovered the video while gonzalez was still in the home, and asked her to leave. >> she obviously didn't know she was on camera. >> reporter: that's what livermore pd says. when an a officer interviewed gonzalez the next day, her statement didn't match what was on the video. when the officer told her about the nanny cam, gonzalez seemed surprised. even after the officer described what was on the video, gonzalez denied hurting the baby. >> you can't trust anyone with your kids. >> reporter: livermore pd says there could be more victims. in a statement, a care.com spokesperson says we have proactively contacted local law enforcement to provide whatever assistance we can in this matter. gonzalez has been removed and banned from care.com. she is expected to be in court tomorrow morning. in livermore, medically woodrow, abc 7 news. today a judge ordered three south bay jail guards to stand trial for the death of an inmate. >> abc news was in court all

in about a year, bart wants to do something now. >> this is a test. >> reporter: the test program is called bart perks. commuters traveling outside the busiest hours from 7:00 to ei8: in the morning will get points. >> you can redeem these points for either small cash prizes or you can play some online games that we have. and you can win up to $100. >> reporter: the money to pay for the program comes from a federal grant. bart says reducing the amount of commuters by more than 1200 people during the peak times would make a huge difference in the morning commute. >> yeah, we can spread out the rush, it would be ideal. >> please, give me a break. >> if you have a flexibility in your job to do that, that would work. >> reporter: bart is calling on people to spread out the rush. >> spread out the rush. >> reporter: it starts in the spring and goes on for six months. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news.

well, we just wrapped up the winter season. there is a reason you probably didn't notice. only once in the whole season did the bay area air quality management district issue an alert. last year there were 23 alerts. on a winter spare the air day, burning wood is banned. the giants fan who was brutally beaten at dodgers stadium five years ago now made a rare appearance at a peninsula high school. we've been following bryan stow's progression since the former paramedic was attacked five years ago. abc 7 news reporter vic lee heard his message to students and his new mission in life. >> reporter: it was a far different bryan stow from the paramedic who was brutally beaten march 31st, 2011 outside dodgers stadium. the victim who suffered severe brain injury. today he walked to the stage, all beat on crutches. but he walked. a huge victory in his long road to recovery. >> i'm bryan stow, and i want to share my story with you. nine months i was in a coma. nine months. i was on a ventilator with a

feeding tube. >> reporter: he called his attackers adult bullies, two men who are now paying for their crimes in prison. but stow, the victim of their senseless attack, has a new window in his life, a window with a new mission. >> i survived for a reason. i'm finding my purpose again. i'm on a mission to tell my story of survival. i want to stop bullies from hurting anyone else. >> reporter: the youngsters in the packed auditorium listened to stow's story, the strength of his message written on their faces. attend, stow asked the students to take a pledge. >> i will not be a bystander to bullying. >> i will not be a bystander to bullying. >> i will stand up and speak up when i witness bullying. >> i will stand up and speak up when i witness bullying. helena. here at san francisco 0.08. but there is a lot more on the way. dark skies prevail over the bay right now. these are our forecast features. we'll see scattered showers tomorrow. stronger storms, two of them this weekend. and it will be rainy, windy with the possibility of even some thunderstorms over the weekend. and that brings with it also the possibility of strong, damaging winds. here is our forecast animation. starting at 4:00 tomorrow morning, looks like the morning commute is going to get off to a wet start. there will be lots of wet spots and areas of showers. it will break up little bit during the day and redevelop later and into the nighttime hours. that's just a teaser for what is to come. here is our storm impact scale. we rank every storm numerically 1 through 5. 1 for a light storm. 5 for a severe storm. saturday's storm is going to be a 3. it's going to be a strong storm, producing quite a bit of rainfall and strong, gusty winds. saturday morning, at 8:00, at which point we'll already have some rainfall.

it will become more widespread and more intense by midday, and very intense by the early evening hours. by 6:00 p.m. saturday, look for widespread areas of moderate to heavy rainfall. heavy downpours, strong gusty winds, winds gusting over 50 miles per hour at some times. but then the rain will ease up a little bit late before the second storm comes in on sunday. here is our wind gust animation. and notice how the winds intensify going into the late saturday afternoon. 55 miles per hour at point reyes. 45 miles per hour at half moon bay. a later 51 miles per hour. 46 across the bay at oakland and on we go with the winds continuing to be strong although diminishing a bit during the overnight hours. our rainfall projections for saturday's storm. this is just for the first storm. by saturday night 2 to 4 inches in the north bay mountains. 3 to 6 in the south bay mountains. and 1 to 2 inches in the lower elevations. now low temperatures tonight will be generally in the low to mid-50s. it will be pretty mild overnight as the rain and showers move

santa clara county correction deputies will go on trial on murder charges for the death of an inmate. now the real work for the defense begins thinking case will take a long time to unfold. when it does, we'll have a lot more evidence. this is basically a prosecutor's area where they put on their evidence. and that's the end of it. so if you want to get one side, that's what you get. >> reporter: much of the final day of the hearing focused on michael tyree's autopsy with the medical examiner describing injuries so brutal. >> the blow to the body was of such force that it caused a bruise on the outside of the body and then lacerated the liver in a y-shaped thing two and a half inches by two and a half inches, one inch deep. >> reporter: the medical examiner's office classified tyree's death on august 26th of the santa clara county jail as a homicide after he died of internal bleeding. now three guards, rafael rodriguez, matthew ferris, and jair lubrin face murder charges

for tyree's death and additional charge for the beating of another inmate. attorneys represent tyree's family. >> if there is a use of force, they're supposed to fill out a form saying they used force. and there was no record of any use of force against michael tyree or against juan villa. >> reporter: the jail guards will be back in court for arraignment later this month. then a trial date will be set. in san jose, katie utehs, abc 7 news. the protesters and kkk members involved in a bloody brawl last weekend are all out of jail. and none faces criminal charges. more than a dozen people ended up in jail after a fight in anaheim last saturday. three people were stabbed. anaheim police say some could be arrested again after video footage and other evidence is fully reviewed. housing costs skyrocket in oakland, a tenant advocacy group is turning to ballot box now in hopes of putting in place stronger protections for

controversy is crawling up a morgan hill parking garage. today the city installed this 16-foot tarantula sculpture. the legs are steel and the body is made of old headlights that have been rewired to take lo ed. e.d. bulbs. some say the money should have been spent elsewhere. it was inspire beside morgan hill's famous tarantulas which is the focus of the tarantula fest every fall. the turkey population tonight is such a nuisance in one california community, people there soon may be allowed to go hunting there are about 100 wild turkeys in the city of davis. they were considered cute at first. but now officials there are considering allowing residents to hunt them using hand thrown nets or traps. >> they are cute. and the males are beautiful. but there were ten of them in the middle of the street the other day, stopping traffic. >> i clap my hands and chase them away. >> nothing.
