we begin with new tributes this morning to nancy reagan, she's a woman who leaves behind in the words of one of her husband's successors, a remarkable legacy of good. >> nancy reagan was right there with president ronald reagan loyally and somewhat and sometimes controversially throughout his political career. in her honor, the flags over the uss ronald reagan lowered to half-mast. we begin with abc's brandi hitt live at the reagan library in california, in front of the plane that was once used by the reagans so many times. >> reporter: good morning. condolences and prayers continue to pour in for nancy reagan's family. and here at the ronald reagan presidential library, mourners are paying respects to a woman many believed played a pivotal role in her husband's career. theirs was a love story spanning more than 50 years. from hollywood, all of the way to the white house, nancy reagan never left ronald reagan's side.

♪ our love is here to stay >> reporter: the former first lady died at her bel-air home sunday morning. her stepson tweeting -- outside the ronald reagan presidential library, families are leaving flowers. as reaction pours in from across the nation. the president and michelle obama tweeting this photo, saying, our former first lady redefined the role in her time here. >> she was one of the greatest first ladies. extraordinary human being. >> reporter: nancy reagan famously launched the just say no anti-drug campaign. >> what should you do when someone offers you drugs? >> just say no! >> reporter: she was once her husband's most trusted adviser. and at times, accused of controlling him. >> doing everything we can. >> reporter: two years after ronald reagan revealed he had alzheimer's, she spoke at the 1996 republican convention. >> each day brings another reminder of this very long good-bye.

>> reporter: mrs. reagan became his caretaker until his death in 2004. seen her hugging the president's casket once last time. at the nation's capitol, flags have been lowered to half-staff in her honor. a large funeral service is now being planned here for nancy reagan. former presidents and other heads of staff will be invited. then she'll finally be laid to rest right next to her husband here at the ronald reagan presidential library. reena and kendis. >> ronald reagan, brandi, passed away more than a decade ago, but mrs. reagan really remained politically active even after his death? >> she did, kendis. particularly with stem cell research. she actually broke away from the party. and decided to pursue that and support it. she believed that it held hope and science for cure. so no other family would have to deal with alzheimer's. like she had to deal with. the last ten years of ronald reagan's life, as she said in

many interviews, sometimes wasn't very pleasant because he was slowly losing his memory. and she doesn't want any other family members to suffer that same pain. she was constantly champion stem cell research. to hopefully find a cure. >> she certainly believed in him and in that cause. brandi, thank you so much. >> and as brandi mentioned in her story, their marriage was a loving partnership. >> the two were married in 1952 in hollywood. barbara waters spoke to nancy and ronald reagan numerous times. during one of those interviews, he here's what they had to say about the secret to a successful marriage. >> how do you keep the romance in a marriage? >> i think it used to be one of you thought that it had to be everything had to be your way, or 50/50. it's not always 50/50. >> what is it? >> sometimes it's 90/10 and you have to be willing to give the 90. or he has to be willing to give the 90. but it's something that you want

lana zak in washington. good morning, lana. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and reena. coming off this weekend's election results where bernie sanders won more states but hillary clinton won more delegates, each was eager to have their message stand out. in the birthplace of general motors, hillary clinton drew a clear distinction between the two democrats. >> i voted to save the auto industry. he voted against the money that ended up saving the auto industry. >> if you're talking about the wall street bailout, where some of your friends destroyed this economy -- >> you know. >> excuse me, i'm talking. >> reporter: clinton holds a 17-point lead in michigan. where once shining cities of steel have turned to rust. the water of flint has been poisoned with lead. for his role in that crisis, both sanders and clinton called for the resignation of the republican governor. >> his dereliction of duty was irresponsible. he should resigned. >> reporter: the two united in reproaching the republicans.

>> compare the substance of this debate with what you saw on the republican stage -- >> we are, if elected president, going to invest a lot of money into mental health. and when you watch these republican debates, you know why. >> reporter: but they disagreed on the effects of the first clinton presidency and the economics of the '90s. >> i was on a picket line in the early 1990s against that. >> at the end of the 1990s, after two terms of my husband's presidency, the unemployment rate in michigan was 4.4%. let's talk about 23 million new jobs, incomes went up for everybody. >> michigan is really the prize tomorrow with 147 democratic delegates at stake. that's nearly as many as all the last four states combined. reena, kendis. >> all right, so it's a big day ahead for them. lana zak reporting live for us this morning. now, to the republicans and donald trump still soaring in the polls despite a blistering

assault by the gop establishment. trump is heading into the michigan primary with 41%. far ahead of his rivals. ted cruz came in with 22%. rubio trailing at 13%. trump and cruz each won two states over the weekend. moving closer to a two-man race. >> look at this, marco rubio picked up a win in puerto rico along with nearly two dozen delegates. rubio is vowing to beat donald trump in his home state of florida next week. but trump is calling on rubio to drop out. the west coast is bracing for a fresh round of powerful storms. the first wave is deaths. widespread damage knocking down trees and power lines, turning roads into raging rivers and dumping up as much as half a foot of rain in some places. the latest radar shows that new line of powerful storms slowly marching eastward, as that first wave moves across the rockies. still ahead -- creeping back up, gas prices rising yet again.

the u.s. and south korea. the north warned of an indiscriminant strike of justice, its words. the threat was delivered in a reaction to the start of huge u.s./south korean military drills which the north says are invasion rehearsals. and good news in jimmy carter's battle against cancer, the former president said that doctors have told him he no longer needs treatment. that word came after an mri last week. last summer, he revealed that he had four small cancerous lesions on his brain. church members in idaho are praying for the recovery of their pastor, after he was shot in the parking lot. tim remington was hit six times including in the head and the lung. the attack happened one day after he prayed with presidential hopeful ted cruz at a campaign rally. police are now looking for the suspected shooter. >> the man who invented the modern e-mail system has died. tomlinson debut the invention way back in 1971.

dallas. now to one family's brush with death. their small plane falling from the sky in new york. >> the father and daughter heading home from a college tour, were about 2,000 feet up when the engine lost power. they quickly deployed the plane parachute. the plane dropped slowly to the ground, the plane landed in an industrial park in long island. >> coming back home. coming from the university of rhode island. looked at colleges. the engine died. i pulled the parachute. and we landed. >> as you can see, they both managed to walk away from the crash, a bit shaken but without serious injuries. next to a frightening look at a rescue of a cougar in the pine valley mountains in utah. this intense video shows the wildlife worker attempting to figure out how to release the enraged animal from a trap without getting hurt themselves. they came close a couple of times.

♪ time now to check "the pulse." we'll start with the passing of nancy reagan. >> those close to her said that she was spry and stylish until the end. she died at her home yesterday. you see this, this is one of the last known pictures of her celebrating her 94th birthday in july. >> her life was filled with memorable quotes and images like this one. taken from the early '80s. president reagan's dressed as santa with nancy on his lap. >> and nancy reagan also invited mr. t. to play santa at the white house when this picture was taken. >> many people who knew her said she was mentally 100% there. >> such a gift to be 94 and make it that far and be fully intact. amazing. next, a fond farewell to a beloved television series. >> no one, not even the show's producers ever thought a period drama on pbs would turn into ratings gold.

humidity in the air. and the chance of showers, even a spotty thunderstorm is possible. especially close to the coast. this will keep going from this morning through 4:00. and it will taper this evening, not steady like the last couple of days. >> it is wet. it is slick. we have several hydroplaned cars and the green on the map shows the rain that could affect the commute and we are starting out with a sig-alert, eastbound 92, cornered skyline boulevard, a tree is block all lanes so here you go around through pacifica and take highway one if you normally take 92 out of half moon bay. a lost spinouts and accidents and back in a couple of minutes. >> highway 92 in san mateo county is closed in both directions at half moon bay. the wind and rain caused five trees to fall across the roads blocking it. there is no estimate of when the highway will re-open. >> our news crews are spread out across the bay area looking for

storm trouble spots. one problem we are seeing is i-880 at alameda off-ramp. janet is showing us the flooding. janet? >> good morning, reggie, 880 and alameda off-ramp exit is closed. check it out. all of the water is here but in case it is too dark to see, this are several cons lined up along the off-ramp letting you know it is unsafe to come to this area. we saw one driver who tried to get through but obviously it wasn't possible to get to the cones. the water is at least 1' deep. crews are here pumping it off the ramp and from a ditch where water is pooling. they are making sure the water does not spill over on to the 880 where traffic is pretty heavy right new moving swiftly. heads up, if you are headed out here on 80 and alameda, te
