one of the women who redefined the first lady's role in the white house. nancy and ronald reagan's daughter patti releasing a statement -- just as when my father died, there's comfort in feeling surrounded by gentle thoughts and kind wishes. often sent out by strangers. >> many remembering nancy and ronald's love story, 52-year partnership. michael reagan saying his mom is once again by the man's side she loved so dearly. we'll have an inside look at their romance coming up. >> so many honoring the former first lady right now. we begin with abc's matt gutman who's at the reagan library there in california. good morning to you, matt. >> reporter: good morning to you, amy, from the hangar that houses ronald reagan's air force one. perhaps no one did more to build his legacy than his wife, nancy. 12 years after his passing this library is preparing to lay her to rest alongside him. more than a decade after her

husband's death overnight preparations began to lay nancy reagan to rest. the former first lady pronounced dead here at her leafy bel-air home saturday. congestive heart failure was the cause. >> she died peacefully, it was her time. >> reporter: on sunday, a hearse carried her body from her home to santa monica, where she'll rest for a few days before she's brought to her final resting place, reagan library. to be near her husband. though frail in her twilight years her spirit never seemed to dim. abc news obtaining this picture of her grinning on her 94th birthday in july. overnight, condolences pouring in from around the world. from the president and first lady saying, nancy reagan once wrote that nothing could prepare you for living in the white house. she was right, of course. to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu lamenting the loss of a friend of israel. to arnold schwarzenegger. >> she was one of the greatest first ladies.

extraordinary human being. barbara bush who succeeded her as first lady in 1989, we take comfort they'll be reunited once more. and family echoing that statement. michael tweeting she has always wanted to be with her ronnie. and daughter patti saying late last night, my mother had died peacefully in her sleep. it was how she wanted to go. one of the last times she was seen in public, in 2014, shown in a wheelchair at her husband's gravesite. on the tenth anniversary of his passing. >> she always made it a point of coming out on the anniversary of her husband's death. she would come out and sit alone and meditate and i'm sure talk to her ronnie. >> i'm told about 1,000 people will be invited to the funeral. while invitations have not been sent out, i'm told that among those invited will be heads of state, other dignitaries, former presidents and celebrities.

nancy reagan of course knew them all. amy, george. >> loved by so many, matt, and more on ronnie and nancy's love story from lara later. but right now, her influence, she was one of the most high-profile influential first ladies. she champion causes, defended her husband in public and behind the scenes a president's indispensable partner. president reagan called on her in his final speech. >> before i go, i'd like to ask the person who's made my life journey so meaningful, so very proud of over the years to join me, nancy. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: it was the story of their marriage. a love story that began during the 1956 film "hellcats of the navy," continued as reagan entered politics. first, as governor of california. >> i ronald reagan do solemnly swear. >> reporter: and she was by his side when he was sworn in as the

president in 1981. >> she had elegance. >> reagan's signature cause, the just say no campaign to fight drug and alcohol use among teens. >> just say no. >> reporter: when president reagan was shot barely two months into his presidency, his first thoughts was nancy. i opened my eyes once to find nancy there. she became protective of her husband. >> i was a very good worrier. >> did he know? >> i think so. he would refer that to me often. >> reporter: sometimes clashing with top aides. they thought she was too controlling. occasionally, she spoke for him. >> doing everything we can. >> the couple had two children between them and helped raise two children from reagan's first wife. after the former president revealed in 1994 that he had alzheimer's disease, nancy's hardest years. >> he was worried about you? >> i know. >> in these years and how painful it would be. >> i know. i know. >> has it been as painful as he feared?

>> well, it's not a wonderful time. >> reporter: she gave an emotional tribute at the 1996 republican convention. >> let me close with ronnie's words, not mine. >> their legacies forever linked. >> never forget your heroic origins. never fail to seek divine guidance and never, never lose your natural god-given optimism. >> and we're joined now by barbara walters who knew nancy reagan so well. great to see you this morning. barbara, you had spoken to nancy reagan in the last year. >> well, we did. i mean, we saw each other, she was fragile. according to her daughter, in poor health, but the mind was good. i mean, if she telephoned you or you called her, you couldn't get off the phone. she loved to talk and gossip. but also was a very serious person.

we talked about how everyone wanted her endorsement. this is nancy reagan, not ronald reagan but they wanted her saying you're the one i want. >> one of your most memories was at the ranch. what were they like together. >> they adored each other. we used to make fun of her face. he would make a speech and she would go. it was a love affair that continued and she took care of him when he had alzheimer's. she was with him all the time. her life revolved around him. >> those alzheimer's years so sad for her because the man she knew was slipping away. >> but she was there. she was there. she took care of him. she didn't leave his side. it was very sad.

it's what she called, the long good-bye. because he had alzheimer's for quite a while. >> and her legacy quite long as well. she spoke out on so many issues -- on breast cancer, on alzheimer's, on the just say no campaign. >> especially on the breast cancer. i know you'll be talking about it in other ways. she made women go and get mammographies and self-exams. she did some very serious things. she also loved gossip and clothes. chef had been criticized for it in the beginning and you know that song, secondhand -- >> sure. >> there was some white house affair in which she sang that. >> yeah. >> how will you remember her? >> i think she brought an elegance to the white house. not that it hadn't been before. rosalynn carter lived a simple lifestyle. there was an elegance, there was

a charm, she brought wonderful artists to the white house. that's what i'll remember most. she was a dignified, elegant woman. a credit to her husband's legacy. >> barbara walters, thank you. >> thank you, george. >> yes, and so many wonderful memories continuing to pour in today. we turn now to the latest on the race for the white house. the republicans and democrats both honoring nancy reagan. facing off over the weekend last night hillary clinton and bernie sanders exchanging sharp words in a heated debate. abc's tom llamas is here with the latest on all of that. >> reporter: during the debate, we learned that senator sanders won the maine caucuses. but clinton still way ahead in delegates. but last night sanders showing he still has a lot of fight left in him. overnight after reflecting on the passing of nancy reagan. >> we'd like to pause for a moment of silence in honor of nancy reagan. >> reporter: bernie sanders and hillary clinton going head to

>> i'd love to take on ted one-on-one. that would be so much fun. >> what's becoming more and more clear is if you want to beat donald trump we have to stand united as one. >> reporter: but marco rubio not giving up without a fight. the florida senator winning big in puerto rico. >> in an open primary, where anyone can vote, i got over 70% of the votes. >> the media has been saying some pretty negative things about donald trump. >> reporter: meanwhile saturday night live taking on trump supporters with a fake ad from a group called racists for trump. >> he's going to take our economy from here to here. and i like that. >> that ad just got edgier after that point right there. senator rubio telling a crowd last night he was invited to come on snl but he skipped it so he could campaign in that state and a big endorsement for john kasich, arnold schwarzenegger. putting his support behind the ohio governor. george? >> let's talk to matt dowd.

you still have four people in the race. you saw the fake ad on "saturday night live" but donald trump about to face his biggest test next week as real ads pour in against him in all of the big states -- florida, michigan, ohio and illinois. >> the interesting thing about this race, donald trump's tank is at 100%. he has the capacity to win this outright. ted cruz is two-thirds full. marco rubio's is a half full. donald trump, the ads he's going to face will deplete that gas tank. in order for him to keep winning in this thing he has to figure out a way to overcome it. >> we just showed the delegate lead right there. about 84 delegates ahead, trump over ted cruz. both guys want a two-person race. >> ted cruz knows the only way he can beat donald trump is if marco rubio and john kasich drop out. that's not going to happen before march 15th when those people vote. donald trump knows that the only person he would like to run against one-on-one is ted cruz.

he has a far easier time beating ted cruz than marco rubio and john kasich. >> hillary clinton, even though bernie sanders won three states over the weekend, she still has an insurmountable lead. >> he still has a small window of opportunity. he won three of four, a big weekend for anyone else, other than bernie sanders against hillary clinton. the problem is, he has to win michigan tomorrow night. he's behind. in order to get oxygen in this race, he has to win michigan tomorrow night. >> all right, guys, to another big headline. the wild weather out west. a string of strong storms lashing the californian coast this morning, triggering flash floods and leaving buildings on this crumbling cliff in danger. and abc's neal karlinsky has the latest. >> reporter: good morning, a drenching and blustery 24 hours out here. this building along this cliffside in danger of falling.

it was scheduled to be demolished today but they have been put on hold for 24 hours because the storm has made the situation here just too dangerous. this morning, el nino has northern california in its crosshairs. drenching san francisco and the surrounding area and leaving these buildings in the city of pacifica, slowly crumbling away alongside a huge bluff at their most dangerous. >> hanging on by a thread. >> reporter: the rain falling so hard at times it almost seemed to be coming from every direction. the one-two punch including strong winds. knocking down trees like the one that went through the back window of this car. the unusual downpours stretching to southern california where nearly half dozen people had to be rescued from raising waters along the l.a. river. >> what we have two people in the water, one up in the tree, one holding onto the tree. >> reporter: up the coast in oregon where a coast guard helicopter rescued three surfers caught in rough seas.

inside a florida courtroom, suing the website for posting a 2007 video of him having sex with heather clem, then-wife of his former best friend. hogan seeking $100 million for the alleged invasion of privacy, saying he did not know that he was being filmed. >> we didn't object to gawker telling the story but the sex tape that was utilized to promote the pornography. to increase their profit. >> gawker said by the time they posted the tape in 2012 there was wide speculation of its existence, arguing that they have a first amendment right of publishing the tape after hogan denied the affair with clem. >> when you walk into another man's house to have sex with that wife and you have been talking about your sex life, the news media is allowed to talk about it. >> reporter: before opening

arguments, a twist, bubba clem's maintained the tape was stolen from him is refusing to testify in the trial. on friday the judge ruling hogan's legal team couldn't draw parallels in this case with erin andrews' $75 million lawsuit. over a naked video of her that was filmed by a stalker. the judge calling the two cases very different. legal experts say this case could have big consequences when it comes to both celebrity privacy and the freedom of press. >> it could have a chilling effect on media outlets with respect to publishing these types of video tapes. >> the judge also ruling that hogan must go by his real name in court and he can wear his bandanna but it must be plain and in a muted color. now to a remarkable survival story, a pilot's quick thinking,

saving himself and his daughter, after his plane lost power 2,000 feet above ground. they were able to deploy the plane's parachute and glide it to safety. jesse palmer has more on this story. >> the local police chief said he had no idea that planes even had parachutes. good thing this one did or this might have had a tragic ending. the dramatic calls for help. a plane losing power. plummeting from 2,000 feet in the air. >> 5 alpha romeo say your quest. >> reporter: thanks to some quick thinking -- >> small plane, orange parachute. >> he landed somewhere in the vicinity of there that's the midfield -- >> reporter: this morning they're okay. miraculously surviving a crash landing on long island with just a few cuts and bruises. >> the engine died and i pulled the parachute. >> reporter: first responders rushing to the wreckage only to find the father and daughter able to walk away without serious injuries.

we're back now with an urgent search for the man who tried to kidnap a 13-year-old girl in florida on this surveillance video, you see her escape, sprint to safety and abc's gio benitez is here with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is exactly the kind of story police want you and your kids to watch right now. it's what this girl did that may have saved her life. watch as 13-year-old girl in florida runs from her would-be kidnapper. her backpack still on. the suv following her, allegedly driven by the man police are looking for this morning leaving other students on edge. >> it's really scary. >> police say the man in this sketch drove up to the 13-year-old last week in his tan suv and asked if she was walking home, she ignored him. he got out of the suv and grabbed her by the waist to pull her in.

she pushed back screaming and we see this on video. the girl running away. >> it is very troubling and that's why we want to get him off the street. >> experts say the girl did the right thing. more than 80% of children who escape an attempted abduction did something proactive. >> what she did was exactly the right thing. you know the kicking, the screaming, yelling, anything she can do to draw attention to that situation, get away from her would-be kidnapper. this girl saved her own life. >> reporter: in 2013, this 8-year-old girl bit her would-be kidnapper and got away. grainy surveillance video capturing her running to get her parents and just last year, this connecticut teen who accepts a ride from an abductor later jumps out of that moving car landing on the asphalt. >> lot of children are taught to be polite to elders and an adult. that's not always the best course of action. but parents need to teach their kids it's okay to say no. >> reporter: here's what the

would travel the world. overnight, we saw flatbed trucks delivering equipment for what will be a 1,000-person funeral here. i'm told that heads of state, former presidents, celebrities will attend. nancy reagan, of course, knew them all. and even in her twilight years, her spirit never dimmed. friends tell me she regularly attended meetings here. she was chairman of the board at the library. when she couldn't walk herself, she was wheeled out to her husband ronald's gravesite, she would sit there for 15 minutes to 20 minutes to meditate. she's lie in repose later this week and then she'll be put to rest alongside her ronnie. tom. >> matt gutman for us. matt, thanks so much. turning to politics now, things got testy between hillary clinton and bernie sanders during last night's debate in flint, michigan, the two exchanged attacks on trade policy, gun control and the auto industry bailout. >> i voted to save the auto industry. he voted against money that ended up saving the auto

industry. i think that's a pretty big difference. >> well, if you're talking about the wall street bailout, where some of your friends destroyed this economy -- >> you know -- >> excuse me, i'm talking! >> now, sanders and clinton did find some common ground calling for michigan's governor to resign over the flint water crisis. police are looking for a suspect that shot a pastor outside his church. tim remington was hit in the head and lung, he's expected to recover. the attack came one day after he prayed with presidential candidate ted cruz. the suspect is considered armed and dangerous. no word yet on a motive. a mid-air scare over houston. five minutes after takeoff. a bird strike apparently disabled one of the engines of this united airlines flight heading to germany. the plane was forced to dump fuel before turning back for an emergency landing. and a food safety recall this morning.

perdue is recalling 4500 pounds of chicken nuggets produced by applegate farms for possible plastic contamination. the nuggets were sold in these seven states. our website has full details on this story. overseas the royal family is sharing pictures of william and kate's first ski vacation with their young family. they escaped to the french alps, even enjoying a snowball fight. the trip was kept secret to protect their privacy. the family is already back home today. looked like a fun trip. and finally, some guys training for a bike race, got the surprise of their lives, when an ostrich appeared from out of nowhere. and ran after them on a road in south africa. going pretty fast, too. one biker said he heard a noise and saw the ostrich in the bush before it ran after them. thankfully, it gave up. the chase soon ended after that. it didn't attack them. amy, i understand when you were over there, apparently you saw ostriches. >> oh, yeah, they're huge. they're fast.

they're really tall and big. i'm glad they were an to outrun. lara had a nice anecdote. >> she thinks like they talk like road runner. >> beef-beep. >> sound effects are free. thanks, guys. now over to this, lena dunham in the hospital this morning, undergoing surgery for an ruptured ovarian cyst. after revealing she suffers from endo mee tree oh sis. abc chief women's health correspondent dr. jen ashton is with us with a reality check. why would endometriosis lead to hospitalization? >> first of all, we absolutely have such things as emergency hospitalizations and emergency surgery. remember, endometriosis is a common chronic disorder. most of the time when we do surgery for endometriosis is elective and managed as an outpatient. sometimes it can be required to do some kind of surgery, if there's a cyst, if it's

rupturing, a small bowel obstruction. these are really to manage the complications. >> so something went wrong obviously on this. lot of people suffer from this as you say, but it's not talked about a lot. can you break it down for us? what is it? >> let's go mini med school here, some basic anatomy, we have some ovaries, the fallopian tube, the uterus endometriosis for reasons we're not clear on gets disbursed all over. in some cases on the surface of the lungs. and those glands are hormonally responsive. they contract along with the uterus. they can pain when they attach to the bowel and bladder. they can cause problems with that. they can cause air in the lung. we have seen it in incisions on the surface of skin. so, again it's really the complications of endometriosis that can be so problematic. >> so, is that what leads to the cyst? >> right, a cyst, a blood-filled

research. she talked to abc's diane sauer in 2005 about then-president bush's opposition to it. >> you could save millions of people's lives if you really charged ahead with stem cell -- hopefully, we will. >> still hoping to persuade him? >> well, you always hope. i don't know. as i say, he -- he firmly believes his position is the right position. and that's fine. that's -- that's his belief. >> reporter: in 2009, nancy met with president obama at the white house as he signed the reagan bill. >> there are few who are not moved by the love that mrs. reagan felt for her husband. and fewer still who aren't inspired that this love led her to take the cause of stem cell research and alzheimer's

research. >> she took care of every need of her husband. >> reporter: roger sandler got to know nancy reagan like few ever did. >> whether it was personal or professional, if you wanted to get a policy question to him, and you couldn't get to him directly, people would call nancy reagan. >> reporter: she was not only a gatekeeper for the president but a style icon for the ages. dazzling in the 1940s and 1950s and capital charisma in the 1980s. ♪ our love is here to stay >> reporter: red was her signature color, later dubbed reagan red. she once said i always liked red, it's a picker-upper. but she still managed to make statements in jeans on the ranch. she won a lifetime achievement award in 1988. oscar de la renta once said, nancy never made a single faux pas.

the editor of "glamour" has said you can track the idea of red as a power color back to nancy reagan. some said she was influential in making red the republican color. while she down played the role of first lady, she became a political figure in her own right and certainly did it with style. george and amy. >> she certainly did. we're joined now by two people who knew nancy reagan well, mrs. reagan's press secretary, she joins us from virginia. >> and here in new york, vanity fair special correspondent bob colacello. good morning to both of you. bob, let's begin with you. nancy reagan said in the past, she never considered her place in the history, it was always ronnie's place in history. what do you think is her legacy? >> think their legacy one and the same. it's very funny, especially as the years went by, she wanted to

be recognized for how much she had done and on the serious side of things but she never wanted to outshine her husband. it was a delicate balance in how she wanted to be written about. but she -- they were just joined at the hip. i mean, she was his -- not only the gatekeeper but his adviser, his soulmate, his public relations adviser. listing post. >> and his caretaker at the end. >> and caretaker all the way through. >> and sheila, nancy reagan didn't like to talk about her influence on the policy of president reagan. but she was really a force behind the scenes at the white house? >> well, i think any -- any wife of a president, if they have a very close relationship, inevitably assumes some of that role just because he trusts her and he knows that anything that she's talking to him about is -- has to do with his own best interest. and that's what i always saw.

she really never initiated any policy and she wasn't particularly interested in it. but she did have -- people knew how much influence she had on the president and so, they would come to her and make their case hoping that she would tell the president about it. >> right. bob, you once asked about her influence on the policymaking? >> yeah, people say you have influence around putting the right people around your husband and getting rid of those who turned out not to be right. i said about policy, was there any area you took an interest in? >> oh no, ronnie had his ideas, his beliefs. he was hard to change. almost in a whisper she said, maybe that small russia thing. major initiative of the whole ronald reagan political -- >> opening with gorbachev. >> anticommunism.

the evil empire and then the opening with gorbachev. working together, really promoted and worked around some of the hard-liners of the administration, i think she had -- she wanted her husband to be seen as a peacemaker not as a warmonger. >> and sheila, as we talk about the influence of nancy reagan, we have to talk about one of the greatest impacts, people talk about how she brought glamour back to the white house. back in the day, she was criticized for that as well. how did she handle her critics? >> well, i think she knew she was in for it. for example, when she ordered the new -- as ronald reagan called it -- the new dishes. for the white house, she knew she was going to take some heat for it. you know, so they went out and they got a private foundation to donate the money when she redecorated the white house, she got contributions from

individuals, but even that created some controversy and she knew she wanted to do it and she was willing to take the heat for it. i think that's probably the best way to describe it. >> which led to that famous secondhand rose moment. tell us about that. >> oh, man, that was great. well, that came in the second year. helen thomas came to see me and she said, you know, we're going to do a piece about nancy reagan and we were wondering if you'd consider having her make a little cameo appearance of some kind. i said, we'll think about that. so, they sent me the lyrics to the song they were going to do and i -- i talked to -- what i did, i did the reverse of her, i went to mike deaver and jim baker and all the people i knew

at the time, david gergen, and asked, would you support this? they said, absolutely. then i got landon, a wonderful speechwriter and he and i sat down and worked out the lyrics, she said, i'll not only do this, i'll dress up and she put a whole routine together and it kept a secret from the president and it was the most amazing night i ever spent in washington, because you could actually feel attitudes toward her change. >> she killed it that night. sheila tate, thank you. and bob, thank you. >> let's go outside to rob. beautiful day here. we got people from virginia. huge contingent from texas. we were vail, colorado, last week. as the u.s. championships were happening. this was the winning superpipe run on saturday. >> watch this. this is going to be the biggest air you have seen all day. are you kidding me! >> are you kidding me is that right.

now, she's stunning audiences again, playing a beautiful model opposite christian bale in the new film "knight of cups." >> is this a friendship we have? i don't want to wreak havoc in men's lives anymore. >> wreaking havoc in men's lives. we're thrilled to have freida pinto. you're playing a model, that was your profession before you got into acting. what was the process like for you having to get back into that head space, because obviously it's a world that you know really well. >> i learned a few things off of modeling. how you deal with criticism and verbal abuse. >> reporter: making "knight of cups" both a challenge and creative wonder, said freida, with us the lack of traditional script.

the director encouraged freida to come up with her own dialogue as cameras rolled. >> it's not at all scripted. one or two times it's scripted is when we have the teleprompters on us and he was telling us what to say. but he also insisted on not saying it if you don't want to say it. >> you say it and like it? we're getting paid to say it. >> reporter: what is like working with christian bale? >> he was very encouraging. don't worry about it. just go with it. just say whatever you have to. >> reporter: a big project coming up, too, jungle book origins. starring christian bale. can you tell us about that? >> i'm so excited about this. this is a story that i grew up on in india. i remember every sunday watching this with my family. and i just think it's a story that will be told forever. so if i can be part of that
