train is being pulled away. >> laura anthony is live with the latest on the investigation. laura? >> reporter: this was an amazing sight as the train cars are gone, the tracks are clear, and ready for that service to resume tomorrow morning. but the trains will go through this area of the canyon very slowly, thanks to that big mudslide that we're showing you. with more rain moving in, no one will be taking any chances. it was an elaborate process involving a crane and dozens of people. it almost looked like a toy laying on its side. but this was a 30-ton train car that needed to be lifted back on the tracks. >> it looks like something out of a movie. when i heard a train derailed in the canyon, i thought we would be hearing of massive loss of

life. >> reporter: justin duffy was among the first to arrive last night after the five-car ace train derailed and the front car plunged into the creek. first priority, getting to the trapped passengers. >> it was tight quarters in there, because the car is on its side. and then you can't really tell from here, but there's two levels. it's very slippery in there. a lot of mud and debris. >> these deputies had to improvise and that takes courage and being quick on your feet. >> reporter: laura anthony, "abc7 news." >> two passengers remain in the hospital tonight. vic lee talked to a passenger today about what that man saw inside the train. >> by the time we got to fremont, everything was fine.

i'm like okay, i'll take a nap. >> reporter: john wong took the tame from santa clara to his home in pleasanton. >> yeah, i was reading a book. >> reporter: navid got on the train to his home to tracy. >> i saw tree branches hitting the window. >> reporter: he was in the third car of the five-car train. passengers managed to open the doors. >> so basically there was mud beside the door and it just came in the door. >> it was amazing, the scene was ridiculous. lights were everywhere, emergency vehicles everywhere. >> reporter: wong live tweeted updates and video all night. the first two cars in front had derailed, one half submerged in the creek.

>> at that time i could see people coming off the window, the emergency window, and i heard a sound like help, help, and people were just rushing to help them all. >> so we were just praying at that time that the people stayed safe. >> reporter: vic lee, "abc7 news." >> for the latest developments on the ace train developments, download our "abc7 news" app. engine trouble forced a southwest plane to return to oakland airport 12 miles after it took off for seattle. flight 288 landed around 5:30 this evening. details haven't been released but there was trouble with the left engine. another big night in the race for the white house. tonight, there are already winners in several of the races. abc news has projected hillary clinton will win in mississippi. and abc news projects donald trump will carry the state

delegates on the republican side, putting ted cruz in second. polls have just closed in michigan as well. we are still waiting for the projections of that state. republican contests are under way in idaho and hawaii. victories by trump and clinton could solidify their front-runner statuses. a san jose police officer accused of shooting and killing a man accused of stabbing two people. a suspect came out to continue the attack, then stabbed his estranged wife when she tried to stop him. >> i ran to the police and said he needs to stop this guy because he stabbed two people. he asked me where and i pointed him out. >> the officer shot the suspect several times when he didn't respond to requests to drop the knife. both stabbing victims are expected to survive. an investigation is under

way after an oakland man was arrested and died in jail. melvin stubs was arrested after his wife was found dead. stubs is a double amputee. he was put in a medical ward. after he died sunday morning, the coroner determined his wife died of natural causes. work is under way to tear down a pacifica apartment building. "abc7 news" was there as crews began clearing the site this morning. demolition is scheduled for thursday. but first, asbestos needs to be removed from the building. we're getting a pilot's view of how a helicopter rescue goes. the sheriff's department shared this video of a helicopter rescuing a hiker in trouble on a remote trail in fairfax. last week, the pilot flew a deputy attached to a 200 foot long line to that hiker. the man was secured with the deputy at the end of that line

and flown to a landing zone. after this rescue, the hiker is going to be okay. you just watched a total solar eclipse live right here on "abc7 news." it reached totality at 5:38 p.m. let's sew what is happening right now from a telescope in micronesia near guam. >> "abc7 news" partnered up with the exploratorium in san francisco to bring this to you. wayne freedman has the reaction. wayne? >> reporter: they know how to put on a show, but the heavy lifting was done by the solar system. it's still a solar eclipse. the first two phases are far more interesting, but when it hit, there was a large crowd in this room and wow, did they go nuts. let's show you this as it happened maybe half an hour ago. they say to witness an eclipse is a life changing experience. in the old days before

satellites and television, you might see one in your life. not anymore. the lights were almost dim in here and that just added to the effects. >> being around all these people means being there. >> reporter: is it like a group, is it better as a shared experience? >> absolutely. you could feel the excitement. >> reporter: at this point, the excitement is still there. it's still rare. the moon still in front of the sun at this point. fascinating. but everybody wanted to see the big leadup. this still goes on for another hour or so. it's a very good show. live at the exploratorium, wayne freedman, "abc7 news." >> all right. thank you, wayne. we have some breaking election news for you. abc news can predict donald trump as the winner in michigan's republican primary today. the democrat's race in michigan is still too close to call between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. but trump has always carried mississippi. republican contests are still under way in idaho and hawaii. a community meeting is set to begin in a few minutes after one of the oldest catholic schools announced its closing for good. chinatown opened in 1921. the school was pioneering at the time, providing a bilingual

heading thwarts the newark area. and then really from san jose down towards the santa cruz area, seeing steadier light rain. temperatures in the 50s. 48 in santa rosa. you can see from here it is crowdy. a weak system between tonight and wednesday. friday, heavier rain and flooding possible. so we'll track this on the storm impact scale. one is light, five is severe. this incoming system is a one between night and wednesday morning. here is your hour by hour timeline, 7:00 tonight, scattered light showers. we head into 10:00 p.m., you notice a light batch of rain moves across the north bay in a few areas. by 11:00 p.m., it's widespread across the area.

the showers continue, 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. as you take those kids off to school, there will be some slick roadways. as far as rainfall totals, it will range anywhere from a few hundredths of an inch to half an inch in santa rosa, concord. rainfall continues for your morning commute, upper 40s to the low 50s. highs for wednesday, mostly cloudy with isolated showers remaining. primarily in the 60s. accuweather seven-day forecast, tomorrow is a one. stronger storms thursday, friday, to bringing flooding concerns and then saturday we have a one, sunday we have a one. weaker systems but wet roadways and breezy conditions. chance of showers into monday. could see some problems by the end of the workweek, so we'll keep you posted. we have hue in for larry tonight for sports. >> did you guys see the eclipse? that was pretty cool.
