umbrella handy. live doppler 7hd is tracking the new round of rain set to soak the morning commute. here is your live look from the abc7 roof cam. it is part of a pattern that will keep us wet through the weekend. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. dan ashley is off. >> ama, our radar is tracking some showers to the north. right now it is misty and drizzly across parts of the bay area. the steady rain is up around eureka and the crescent city area. on the storm impact scale one is light and five is severe. we have been using it to track the systems and rate them and here is where the next one stand. tomorrow morning it is a one. light rain and wind. we are expecting .15 to half an inch of rain. here is what is going to follow. we have stronger storms coming in. if the computer models are right and the pineapple connection is made, that subtropical moisture could mean the bay area gets drenched and rainfall could add up in inches.

i'll be back with a look at the stronger storms and how they rank on our storm impact scale coming up. ama? >> thank you, sandhya. now to sky 7hd showing the clean up in alameda county. more than 24 hours after the crash union pacific crews cleared the scene a short time ago. and enough progress has been made for ace to resume service tomorrow morning. lisa amin gulezian picks up our coverage. lisa? >> reporter: it opened a short time ago and the crews left a few pieces of equipment here just in case. over there in the distance you can see the bright light on the tracks. inspectors are keeping a close eye on things to make sure everything goes smoothly tomorrow. 75 people worked nonstop on these union pacific tracks. late this afternoon sky 7 was there as the most seriously damaged train car was pulled out of the water. it took nearly 24 hours to

move the five-car train off the tracks where the night before a mudslide caused two of the cars to derail. the tracks were inspected and repaired. >> you lift it up and shake it up and it goes pretty quick. >> many are shaken by what happened. including deputies brandon and king from the alameda county sheriff's office. they were truly the first to respond after the train crashed. >> the whole scene itself was surreal. >> this is what they saw when they arrived. both men jumped into the creek where they were almost swept away by the current. they reason a half mile and saw an unforgettable scene. >> some had injuries and scrapes and a little blood. people were crying and laying down on the tracks. a lot of shock on people's faces. >> reporter: they knew they had to get into the first submerged car. >> we crawl into the train and because of the steep slope we were on we had to slide down

the walls from inside the train while boarding the windows because the body of the train was still lifted off the ground. >> they got two people out and carried them a mile to an an awaiting ambulance. tonight they are humbled by the experience. >> i wasn't worried about being a hero or what was going to happen. i wanted to make sure everything was safe. >> they are also back at work. abc7 news. trouble forced a southwest plane to return from oakland airport after taking off for seattle. it landed on the runway about 5:30 without incident. they reported trouble with the left engine and passengers were put on another train. >> look closely at this photo. there is a man stuck down there. you can see him highlighted. the 33-year-old marin county resident spent his night there. he slept for 18 hours. the helicopter was called out

to rescue him. this is video they sent out. he took a shortcut on the beach to his car, but then the tide rose and he fed month to high -- and he moved to higher ground. he didn't have a cell phone to call for help. >> oakland police are investigating why officers mistakenly arrested a double amputee who later died in custody. melvin stubbs was taken into custody after they found his wife dead in her home. she was later sent to the infirmary for low blood sugar. he died on sunday morning and after that the coroner determined his wife died of natural causes. new at 11:00, emotions ran high in old saint mary's cathedral. the catholic diocese announced it is suspending operations at the historic k-8 school because of low enrollment. katie is live at saint mary's cathedral with the anger from parents and staff. >> reporter: a young student

came up to me after the meeting and said it felt like the powers that be lost faith in them that they didn't believe. parents had much stronger word for the archdiocese. >> we will have to suspend operations. >> reporter: with the words of fury and frustration and anger from parents mostly aimed at the arch diocese of san francisco. >> archdiocese is saying screw you, we want our money back. the community has raised over $15 million. where does that go? >> parents didn't know the school was in such financial dire straits. >> everyone felt the decision was sudden and we felt surprised and taken uh back. >> reporter: the first year principal said he was trying to protect the dwindling student body. >> there would have been a mass exodus. >> the community wasn't given an opportunity to participate in building a constructive

solution. >> reporter: they say the school can't make ends meet and it is $5 million in debt for construction of the new campus. >> there was someone who was going to come in and rent part of the facility. the enrollment was lower this year over last. a lot of things converged that we can't reverse even if we are working with them closely. >> the cultural programs, preschool and saturday language school will continue to operate. the parish says it will place families at new schools. abc7 news. moving to the race for the white house and more victories for donald trump. the front runner score edwins in the michigan and gop primaries. the big surprise was a bernie sanders' victory. he scored a win over hillary clinton. here is megan hughes. >> a critical day in the race to the white house and the biggest prize of the night,

michigan. hillary clinton sounding upbeat during the day at a detroit coffeehouse. she took the stage in ohio. >> i am proud of the campaign that senator sanders and i are running. >> reporter: her rival, bernie sanders far exceeded expectations and vowing to stay in the race. >> this has been a fantastic night in michigan and we look forward to going to illinois and ohio and missouri and the other states we will be competing against next week. >> reporter: on the republican side donald trump may have benefited from independent voters in michigan. >> embrace it. we will win the election easily. >> reporter: but he is also answering questions like this. >> do you swear you will vote for donald trump tomorrow. raise that hand. i love you. >> reporter: asking supporters to raise their hand and take an oath. some claim it looks like a nazi salute. >> the kings and queens demand that of their subjects.

francisco, east bay and all of the bay area , this is abc7 news. tonight these dogs are looking for new homes. they are just some of the animals that are part of an animal cruelty investigation in contra costa county. officials say a couple packed 19 dogs into the back of a truck with little or no food or water. here is abc7 news reporter cornell bernard. >> reporter: pom-pom is recovering alongside several of her friends at the contra costa animal shelter. she was one of 19 dogs cramped in a u haul truck found parked in this street in bay point. the dogs were sick and starving. >> some with mange and some with abrasions and some with tumors. >> sheriff deputy arrested a transient couple who kept the dogs as pets charging them with animal cruelty. two of the animals were too

sick and had to be euthanatized. this is biggie. he just had surgery and was malnourished and was recovering nicely. >> they were parking here day after day. >> the couple's u haul was a common sight. >> did you see the dogs in the back of the u haul? >> yes. they were cages on top of cages. >> what did you think of that? >> it was not right. >> it is possible they will try later this month. he says animal cruelty, a terrible crime never taken lightly. >> that's why our agency exists is to bring those people to justice and bring the animals to care. >> all these dogs need now is a good home. the shelter has an on-line photo gallery and we have a link at abc7news.com. in martinez, cornell bernard, abc7 news. well, you saw a total solar eclipse live on abc7 news. it reached toe tall tee at 5:38 this evening. this is what it looked like.

it is up around the mendocino coast. it will work its way southward. we have already seen some showers, but we are in a bit of a break. temperatures in the 50s and 49 in santa rosa and here is a live look and you can see how overcast it is from our emeryville camera looking across the bay. the weak system coming through tomorrow morning. stronger storm on thursday and friday. it is going to span two days and then the heavier rain is expected with that system. flooding is a concern. on the storm impact scale, the one coming in tomorrow morning is a light system. it is a one. light rain and wind. here is your time line. 1:00 a.m. don't be surprised if you are woken up by the pitter-patter of the rain drops. you are going to see slick roadways and as we head toward 7:00 a.m., wipers will be going. it is not heavy rain there. at noontime isolated showers are possible in the north bay. the trend continues into the

evening. the rest of you are looking for cloud cover on your wednesday. there is not anything to write home about. here is what's coming after it. it is a moderate strength storm. it will span thursday and friday. it will send waves of heavy rain and it does bring with it flooding concerns. not just urban and small stream flooding, but we may see flooding concerns in gernville. 11:00 on wednesday night and not much happening. we head into thursday morning at 6:00 a.m. in the north bay. and by 10:00 a.m. it starts to shift into the central bay and parts of the south bay by noontime. it is widespread rain and then we get another wave of rain coming through on thursday night. the oranges and yellows are indicating where the heavy rain will be at 7:00 p.m. we are looking at pockets cets to moderate and heavy rain. then the next batch comes in and we will get drenched if

this continues to trend wet. friday at 7:00 a.m. it is sitting over the bay area. and that heavy rain continues to be more moderate at 10:00 a.m. scattered showers for your friday afternoon. rainfall totals are taking you through the next couple storms will look hike this. by noon on friday we are looking at almost four inches in the north bay. just over an inch in the san jose area. this is why the concern of urban and small stream flooding. don't be surprised if you can see the trees toppling. the russian river at gernville is expected to reach flood stage saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. it is expected to crest at 32 feet. we'll keep an eye on that for you. scattered showers. don't leave home without an umbrella. upper 40s to the low 50s. most of you will see cloud cover except for the isolated showers up to the north. upper 50s to the low 70s. here is your seven-day forecast. one on the storm impact scale
