hillary clinton has a wide lead but still not enough to clinch the nomination yet. and take a look at the republican race. donald trump in the lead but ted cruz not too far behind. >> look for more election night coverage in our next half hour and later on "america this morning." we want to move on to another story we're following overnight. we're learning more about a tragedy overseas and an american grad student killed in israel, a victim of a new series of palestinian attacks. >> it's the latest in five months of near daily blood shed but the attacks come at an important time in u.s./israeli relations. >> abc's molly hunter joins us live from jerusalem. molly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and reena. last night just one mile from where vice president joe biden was meeting with former israeli president simon perez, a violent stabbing rampage and an american combat veteran killed. the attacker sprints up the road, swinging his knife, stabbing people as he goes,

reaching into car windows, weaving in and out of traffic. a busy boulevard on the mediterranean city of jaf fa, next to tel aviv. people yell at him to stop but he keeps running. after nearly 20 minutes, israeli police officers close in. ten gunshots ring out. the attacker is shot dead. identified as bashar masalha, a 22-year-old palestinian from the west bank and a member of the islamist group hamas, the group said on twitter. he injured at least 12 people and killed american graduate student, 28-year-old taylor force. a first-year mba student at vanderbilt, the university said. he was in israel with classmates on a school trip. an eagle scout and a graduate of west point, he served tours of duty in iraq and afghanistan. tuesday was deadly though not unusual. four other attacks, four other people killed, including three palestinian attackers and a 50-year-old palestinian woman, who allegedly lunged at security forces with a knife. over the last five months,

violence here has killed nearly 30 israelis and about 180 palestinians, most while attempting attacks or suspected of attempting attacks. now, the violence continues this morning and later today, vice president biden will meet with both israeli prime minister netanyahu and palestinian president abbas. now, along with those greater strategic discussions, these attacks will certainly be on the table. reena, kendis. >> that video was absolutely insane. molly, we've become so familiar, sadly, with the violence over there. what made this particular attack seem so different from the previous ones? >> reporter: kendis, this attack was different. now, the attacks we see almost daily and have seen almost daily since october are very targeted, very specific, and very frequently young palestinian men with knives attacking israeli soldiers or someone who is obviously israeli. last night was different. the attack lasted for 20 minutes

and the attacker didn't know who he was going to hit as he ran up that street. he ended up killing that american, injuring two arabs and at least ten other people. >> the randomness makes it so much more terrifying. abc's molly hunter live in jerusalem. molly, thank you so much for that report. the man suspected of shooting an idaho pastor six times last weekend has been arrested at the white house. the secret service says kyle odom allegedly threw flash drives and other objects over the south fence last night. the pastor regained consciousness yesterday. the motive is unknown. authorities knew the suspect had flown to washington. the kansas factory, the scene of a workplace shooting, is set to reopen for business tomorrow. excel industries is giving workers an opportunity to return to the factory today to work through their emotions. employee cedric ford killed three people last month before being shot dead by police. the motive remains a mystery. in florida, more explicit testimony in hulk hogan's $100 million lawsuit against gawker

it is a busy wednesday. what a surprising tuesday we're coming off of. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. you're talking about the events last night, caucuses and primaries. >> that took place in michigan. we'll start there with the results. what some were calling a super tuesday, too. >> that's a good way to put it. the big headline, though, an upset win by bernie sanders in michigan, surprising even his own campaign. >> yeah, they were shocked by it. take a look at the latest numbers we're getting in overnight. sanders winning by about 2 percentage points, taking a majority of the state's delegates. the clinton campaign now reviewing what went wrong there and why all signs pointed to a big win for her in that state. this win likely to bolster the sanders campaign and help him raise more funds. the other democratic primary last night in mississippi, a clinton land side, 83-16. >> on the republican side, a double win for trump in michigan and mississippi. ted cruz taking idaho. but taking a closer look at michigan, john kasich with a

very strong third place showing there. he's predicting a win in his home state of ohio next week. >> let's talk about the republicans for a moment here because donald trump prevailed despite fierce efforts to block his path. >> and bernie sanders is predicting more success after his stunning victory in michigan. abc's megan hughes has the latest from detroit. good morning, megan. >> reporter: reena, kendis, good morning. from the polls it looked like the front-runners were going to sweep these primaries. that's why this big win by bernie sanders here in the state of michigan really became the story of the night. a critical day in the race to the white house. and the biggest prize of the night, michigan. >> i think it's important for everybody to vote. >> i'm going to vote for the one that i really want and i think it will make a difference. >> i know definitely who i want and i know who i don't want. >> reporter: in the democratic race, abc news projects bernie sanders pulling off an upset. >> this has been a fantastic night in michigan, and we look forward to going to illinois,

ohio, missouri, and the other states that we will be competing in next week. >> reporter: hillary clinton sounding upbeat during the day at a detroit coffee house. by night, she took the stage in ohio. >> i'm proud of the campaign that senator sanders and i are running. >> winning is winning. >> reporter: on the republican side, donald trump may have benefited from independent voters in michigan. >> embrace it, we will win the election easily. >> reporter: ted cruz in north carolina taking aim. >> the kings and queens demand that of their subjects. but in america, no man is above the law. >> reporter: meanwhile, marco rubio and john kasich holding events in their home states of florida and ohio, where both of their campaigns are betting big. >> if you vote for john kasich or ted cruz, you are voting for donald trump. i am the only one that can beat them in florida. >> reporter: ted cruz did take home one win, the state of idaho as he continues to make the case that he's the only one that can beat trump. reena, kendis.

>> megan, we have to remember this thing is far from over right now. there's still a lot of races left. what's next? >> reporter: the next big day to watch, circle it on your calendar, march 15th, next tuesday. we've got five states and some big ones that are going to be up for grabs. so ohio, florida, illinois, a lot of them are winner take all on the republican side. that will be a big day for politics. >> megan, michigan really loved mitt romney. mitt romney doesn't like trump. he still won the state. why is it so important even though it's not a winner-take-all state? >> reporter: well, michigan is important for a number of reasons. number one, you've got a huge number of delegates both on the republican side and on the democrat side. it's important that it's not winner take all for candidates like ted cruz, like john kasich, who didn't win in michigan but they did well, so they're going to take home some delegates as well. >> abc's megan hughes live in detroit, thank you so much. stay with abc news as the results and reaction come in all morning long.

in our next half hour, look at what really drove voters to the polls last night. trump's success last night came, and a new controversy did as well, from the republican front-runner calling on his supporters to raise their right hands in a sort of allegiance to trump. critics say it's a reminder of the third reich nazi salute. on "good morning america," trump was asked if the tone of his tactics should be toned down. >> maybe so, but, i mean, look, i have a tremendous following. we want to make america great again. it's a strong following. i don't know about the hitler comparison. i hadn't heard that. but it's a terrible comparison. i'm not happy about that, certainly. >> the former head of the anti-defamation league said seeing an audience of thousands of people raising their hands in what looks like a hail litler salute was offensive, obnoxious and disgusting. turning our focus overseas now and to an american who is dead after a series of attacks by palestinians in israel. vanderbilt university graduate student taylor force was killed in a stabbing rampage in the port city of jaffa.

force was a west point grad who had served in iraq and afghanistan. he was in israel as part of his mba program. the attacker ran against traffic along a popular seaside boulevard stabbing people as he went. he was shot and killed by police. all together, a dozen israelis were wounded in the attacks. vice president joe biden's trip to israel may have served as the trigger for the latest violence. as a result, israel is increasing security around him. during his two-day visit, biden is expected to meet with the israeli prime minister as well as the palestinian president. the pentagon says u.s. air strikes targeted a top isis leader last week in syria. an initial u.s. assessment says it is likely the leader omar al shishani was killed along with 12 additional isis fighters. also known as omar the chechnyan, he was considered the group's minister of war if confirmed, his death would be a major victory for u.s. efforts against isis. breaking overnight, the man

suspected of shooting an idaho pastor last weekend has been arrested at the white house. the secret service says kyle odom allegedly threw flash drives and other objects over south fence last night, and a law enforcement source tells abc news the suspect was tracked to washington on social media. pastor tim remington regained consciousness yesterday. the motive for his shooting is unknown. five fbi agents are under investigation this morning in connection with the deadly shooting outside an oregon refuge. prosecutors say the shooting of lavoy finicum by state troopers was justified. but the agents' actions do remain under that probe. we get more from pierre thomas with the new video. >> put the laser right there. put the bullet through the head. >> reporter: this just released cell phone video shows the final moments of robert finicum's life. the chaos caught on tape. racing away from a checkpoint with four passengers. nearly running over an fbi agent -- >> hang on. >> reporter: and a police roadblock. finicum, part of a group that had taken over a federal

wildlife refuge, is later fatally shot by oregon state troopers. that, too, caught on fbi surveillance tape. authorities deemed the killing justified. but two mystery shots that missed finicum fired right as he exited his truck have a team of fbi agents under scrutiny. >> go ahead, shoot me. >> reporter: you can clearly hear one of those shots hitting his truck, right here, as finicum jumps out of his vehicle. >> go ahead, shoot me. >> reporter: watch and listen again. >> go ahead, shoot me. >> reporter: local authorities believe they were fired by the fbi's elite hostage rescue team. if true, the agents apparently never reported those gunshots. so, did the agents mislead supervisors? authorities say finicum's reckless and dangerous actions led to his death, but his family claims he was unjustly executed. now with questions about a possible fbi cover-up, expect an explosion of conspiracy theories. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. the home depot will pay at least $19.5 million to consumers because of a data breach in 2014.

the retailer set up a $13 million fund to reimburse shoppers for actual losses. the rest will pay for 18 months of identity protection services. the data breach affected more than 50 million customers who used payment cards on self-serve kiosks. this is an interesting heist. a brinks armored car service employee is accused of stealing nearly $200,000, all of it in quarters. that's 9800 pounds of quarters or almost five tons. the federal reserve bank had stored the coins at brinks in birmingham, alabama. the fbi says this was not, quote, a nickel and dime theft. the former brinks employee has agreed to plead guilty and repay the money. >> did he really say that, it's not a nickel and doim -- >> no. it was quarters. >> it was quarters. you may have seen our stories last week about astronaut scott kelly who landed in kazakhstan after a year in space. well, there's a reason this show is called "world news now." >> we cover the world.

back to our top story. bernie sanders defying the polls and the pundits to pull off a surprise victory in michigan. it's a big disappointment for hillary clinton but she scored big in mississippi, crushing sanders in what was a landslide. on the republican side, donald trump overcame a barrage of attacks to decisively win in michigan and mississippi. ted cruz picked up idaho and he battled it out with john kasich for second places in michigan, and marco rubio failed to win any states or delegates. well, a quick-thinking sheriff's deputy in pennsylvania brings a scary situation to a peaceful end. take a look at the surveillance video. a masked gunman in the backseat of a taxi demanding money. the driver hands over 11 bucks. check out the car in the back. that's the deputy who realizes something's not right. he flips on the lights, approaches the car and sees what's going on.

was for bernie sanders in michigan? he had a 1% -- the pollsters, the guys who know this stuff, he had a 1% chance of winning michigan. >> you know what? hillary clinton does so well with minority community. i think possibly evangelicals, as well. so it was really a surprise for so many people that he broke out of that group and was able to turn it around. >> yeah. they gave her a 99% chance of winning michigan. >> you should have bet against the odds. >> i should have gone the other way. all right. let's start, though, with that race for the white house. yes, donald trump regaining momentum after a week of blistering attacks, but bernie sanders enjoying that big victory that no one saw coming. > that photo finish in michigan, sanders winning by a healthy margin of more than 20,000 votes proving the pollsters wrong. in the other democratic primary, hillary clinton handily winning in mississippi, thanks to overwhelming support from african-americans. >> here's how the republican race shaping up. donald trump winning in mississippi and michigan where john kasich had a strong showing.

ted cruz, the projected winner in idaho, and marco rubio finishing the night empty-handed. >> donald trump's ability to pick up the bulk of the delegates shows the movement to block him has virtually been ineffective. >> bernie sanders is promising that the best is yet to come after his big win in michigan. abc's liz kreutz begins our coverage from cleveland. good morning, liz. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and reena. hillary clinton took the stage here in cleveland, ohio, last night not even mentioning those races in mississippi and michigan. that one turning out to be much closer than her campaign expected. bernie sanders, the comeback kid? overnight, the vermont senator eking out a surprise victory in michigan. >> the bernie sanders campaign, the political revolution that we are talking about is strong in every part of the country. we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen. >> reporter: for hillary clinton, an embarrassing loss. although she did win in mississippi, her campaign was hoping to lead by double digits in the great lake state.

over the past four days, hillary, bill and chelsea clinton have campaigned there focusing on issues like detroit's auto industry and the water crisis in flint. >> i asked if we could have that debate there because i want to keep shining a bright spotlight on what happened in flint, michigan. >> reporter: sanders, meanwhile, getting that extra boost of confidence, tweeting late last night, the corporate media counted us out, the pollsters said we were way behind, but we won. thank you, michigan. in recent days clinton has been showing signs she's ready to get to the general election. but this primary is not over. tonight clinton and sanders come face-to-face in miami for the eighth democratic debate. kendis and reena? >> abc's liz kreutz in ohio where the next big contest is on tuesday. it was a big night for the republicans with donald trump winning huge. >> and our coverage begins again

live in detroit with abc's megan hughes. megan, is michigan really important for trump? is this a big win? >> reporter: this is absolutely a big win. number one, it obviously adds to his momentum. number two, it is a state with a huge number of delegates. just on the republican side, we're talking about almost 60 delegates. trump is going to get a big number of those. it's also significant when it comes to the general election. we're seeing a lot of reports that a number of independent voters came out for trump. now, if that's the case, there is a chance that we'd see a strategy to make michigan a real battleground state come november. >> and really things start to really change going forward. ted cruz is making gains, as well, right? >> reporter: we did see one win from ted cruz in the state of idaho tonight. that's significant because ted cruz, the only republican to beat trump tonight -- or last night, rather. so that's a case that we've been hearing cruz make over and over

again on the campaign trail, that he's the only one that can beat trump. it also does add to his numbers. so far cruz has won in seven states. >> so what's next for the republicans, megan? >> reporter: well, march 15th, a big day for both parties. but on the republican side especially, you've got ohio, you've got florida where john kasich and marco rubio are going to be defending their home turf. also important to point out for the republicans, some of those states are winner take all. so that's going to be a very big night to watch. >> next tuesday very big indeed. we'll look forward to it. abc's megan hughes live in detroit. thank you for your time. well, sticking with the republicans, some revealing information from gop voters. >> in exit polling, mississippi republican voters overwhelmingly supporting trump's plan to ban non-u.s. muslims from entering the country. 76% supporting that plan. >> when you look at michigan, half republican voters prefer an outsider as the next president. 41% said they want someone with experience. >> staying in michigan, the question, is donald trump honest

and trustworthy? it was split down the middle there, as you can see. stay with abc news as the results do come in and we get some reaction all morning long. look for reports from our political team on "america this morning" and "good morning america". well, another major story this half hour, at least one person is dead after severe weather in parts of texas, arkansas and oklahoma. and it's still not over yet. with more rain, flooding and damaging winds expected today, we have more from abc's phillip mena. >> reporter: powerful storms roaring through the lone star state. at this gas station in saginaw, texas, winds gusting to 70 miles an hour, whipping this canopy. >> the store was full, and everybody was just standing in there scared to death. >> reporter: and confirmed tornadoes. in stevenville, the top of these apartments ripped off. another in the town of cool. this is damage from winds over 85 miles an hour. >> whoa. >> reporter: power flashes caused by this tornado near tolar, lighting up the sky. >> i heard the hail come and about time i looked out, i see roofs coming off and spinning.

>> reporter: jimmy hill helping pull two injured from the rubble. more than a dozen homes here damaged or destroyed. torrential rain leading to multiple high-water rescues, including six students and their driver, after their school bus got stuck in thigh-deep waters outside denton. at least one person dying in floodwaters near houston. friends and family are digging through the debris, trying to salvage a lifetime of memories. phillip mena, abc news, tolar, texas. to the west coast now where normal train service is expected to resume this morning in northern california after a storm-related derailment. investigators say the commuter train derailed because of a mudslide that sent a tree across the tracks. one of the cars plunged into a creek. nine people were injured, four of them seriously. but rescue crews say it was a miracle no one was killed. a health alert this morning. the world health organization reporting sexual transmission of the zika virus is more common than previously thought.

but clinton trounced sanders in mississippi with more than 80% of the vote. donald trump is the big winner on the republican side easily taking mississippi and michigan. the biggest prize. and ted cruz, he won idaho. john kasich picked up some delegates but a disappointing night for marco rubio. >> a lot of people will be dissecting exactly what happened in michigan and trying to figure out what went wrong. >> incredible. i got to tell you, the past 24 hours the news cycle has been donald trump is losing momentum, he's losing momentum. but after this mississippi win, i find it hard to say -- that he pretty much swept the south. did really well last night. how can we say his momentum is draining? >> and hillary clinton, let's admit, she did have a huge victory in mississippi, but the michigan defeat is stunning. the 538, our partners over there are saying the sanders win there was one of the greatest upsets in modern political history. that's how huge it was. not a single poll had sanders coming within five points.
