bernie sanders with a big night. donald trump winning michigan as well, the crown jewel of the evening. sanders pulled off the upset victory in the first industrial state to vote so far defying the polls and the pundits, but hillary clinton scored big in mississippi claiming more than 80% of the votes. >> now they're poised to face off again returning to the debate stage tonight for eighth time. it is "your voice, your vote." abc's david wright has the latest from cleveland. david, good morning. >> reporter: kendis and reena, hello from cleveland where hillary clinton was clearly hoping to give a victory speech. instead, she came out and addressed her supporters giving a standard stump speech telling them it's going to be a very busy week. >> as we move through this week of travel and door-knocking and phone-calling, if you work for me and if you vote for me, i will work my heart out for you. i will work every single day.

>> reporter: as late as tuesday, the polls showed her a good 10, 15 points ahead in michigan, so the fact that this turned into a late night is itself a surprise for her campaign and a disappointment. for bernie sanders, a sign of optimism. he told his supporters, as he told us, he plans to fight on. >> what tonight means is that the bernie sanders campaign, the people's, the revolution, the people's revolution that we are talking about, the political revolution that we are talking about is strong in every part of the country, and, frankly, we believe that our strongest areas are yet to happen. >> reporter: sanders is in miami, florida, where he will be debating hillary clinton. a lot of eyes will be focused on that debate now as this democratic primary is newly energized. kendis, reena. >> well, our thanks to david wright. michigan is sanders' first win

outside of his previous strongholds and will likely help him raise money. he also gave thanks to supporters overnight saying the corporate media counted us out. the pollsters said we were behind, but we won. thank you, michigan. >> and sanders' snapchat account sending this image out showing the democrat closely watching the michigan returns on tv. on the republican side, the night belonged to donald trump with victories in michigan, mississippi and hawaii. >> ted cruz picked up idaho and battled it out with john kasich for second place in michigan, but marco rubio came up empty-handed failing to win a single state. trump's victories followed a week of blistering attacks when the republican establishment and outside groups bent on blocking him from the nomination. >> trump also looked ahead to the general election but not before taking a few swipes at his fellow republicans. >> they didn't do so well tonight, folks. okay, i'm not going to say anybody didn't do well. they didn't do well. there's only one person did well tonight, donald trump, i will tell you. >> even though trump and sanders are far apart on the political

spectrum, they both rode a wave of voter discontent picking up support from people frustrated with the washington establishment. >> well, trump's victory comes in the middle of yet another controversy. this time he's under fire for asking supporters at a recent campaign event to raise their right hands in a sort of pledge of allegiance to him. now, ted cruz is chiming in saying what trump did strikes him as profoundly wrong. >> and this notion of demanding people stand and raise their hands pledging allegiance, we're familiar with that. in monarchies, the kings and queens demand that of their subjects, but in america, no man is above the law. >> others have compared trump to hitler saying his actions are reminiscent of the third reich and the nazi salute. well, let's see where things stand in the important delegate counts. when pledged delegates and superdelegates are added

together, hillary clinton has a wide need but still not enough to clinch the nomination. >> and take a look at the republican race, donald trump in the lead, but ted cruz not too far behind. >> and some revealing information from gop voters in exit polling. mississippi republican voters overwhelmingly supporting trump's plan to ban non-u.s. muslims from entering the country, 76% supporting that plan. >> in michigan half of republican voters say they prefer an outsider as the next president. 41% said they want someone with experience. also in that state, the question is donald trump honest and trustworthy? it's split down the middle there. of course, we have much more on the latest primary results ahead on "good morning america." we're also going to talk live to governor john kasich. well, more heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in northern texas overnight slowing the cleanup from at least three tornadoes yesterday. roofs were torn off buildings. mobile homes destroyed and trees and power lines knocked down. only one death is reported.

and as you can see on this radar, that storm system is still covering most of texas. more flooding likely in the lone star state and also neighboring louisiana and arkansas before the storms move out of the area. breaking overnight, the man suspected of shooting an idaho pastor six times on sunday has been arrested at the white house of all places. the secret service says kyle odom allegedly threw flash drives and other objects over the south fence last night. and a law enforcement source tells abc news the suspect was tracked to washington on social media. pastor tim remington regained consciousness yesterday. the motive for that shooting is still unknown. to the midwest now also breaking overnight, a man accused of killing five people is in custody after an extensive manhunt. pablo serrano-vitorino allegedly shot and killed four men at his neighbor's home in kansas city, kansas and then killed another in missouri. he was found not too far away overnight lying in mud. a missouri highway patrol officer says he appeared to be

exhausted and did not put up a fight. he is a mexican national. serrano-vitorino had been accidentally released by immigration authorities last year. and an american has been killed in a vicious attack in israel. vanderbilt university grad student taylor force was killed in a stabbing rampage in the port city of jaffa. force was a west point graduate who served in iraq and afghanistan. he was in israel as part of his mba program. the attacker ran against traffic along a popular seaside boulevard stabbing people as he went. he was shot and killed by police. vice president joe biden's trip to israel may have served as the trigger of this wave of violence and as a result, israel is now increasing security around him. biden met this morning with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and will see the palestinian leader later in his two-day visit. okay, back to washington and perhaps a lighter moment on capitol hill. senate minority leader harry reid was speaking with reporters, one of whom was recording his comments on an

you're look g ing at a huge fire that destroyed chicago's largest indoor/outdoor flea market. the black smoke that billowed from the scene could be seen miles away. one woman who was trapped in a bathroom had to be rescued. no one was injured and the cause of that fire is still unknown. a commuter train service resumes this morning in northern california following that derailment. officials say a mudslide triggered by heavy rains pushed a tree onto the tracks causing the derailment of the a.c.e. train. one car plunged into a nearby creek. four people were seriously injured but they're expected to recover. first responders say it's a miracle no one was killed. well, turning to business the stock market's five-day winning streak is over, the s&p 500 and nasdaq were hit hardest. more than 1%. but the dow was also off. investors were spooked by the latest weak economic report out of china and falling crude oil prices. there is a mcdonald's opened

recapping our top story, bernie sanders staying in the game with an upset victory in michigan. >> sanders edged out hillary clinton despite polls that gave her a double-digit lead. but clinton trounced sanders in mississippi. trump is a big winner on the republican side winning mississippi, michigan and hawaii. >> ted cruz won idaho and john kasich picked up delegates but it was a disappointing night for marco rubio who failed to win a single state. five fbi agents are under investigation this morning in connection with the deadly shooting outside an oregon wildlife refuge. prosecutors say the killing of militia member lavoy finicum by state troopers was justified but two mystery shots that missed finicum fired right as he exited his truck have the agents under scrutiny because they failed to report them. they could face serious punishment. and we have learned overnight about the death of george martin often known as the fifth beatle.

california off the track. 75 people worked nonstop to get it cleared to resume service. ace train derailed on monday night in niles canyon while traveling from san jose to stockton. nine people were hurt. everyone survived. investigators say the train derailed because of a mud should, mud and possibly a tree landed on the tracks. train hit the debris. they will study the event recorder in the train to check the speed and how the brakes were working. investigators say the track looks good. they will slow the trains down through niles canyon where the derailment happened. to be sure. the first train will pass through at 5:40 this morning. >> ace train is trying to figure what could be done to prevent an accident like this from happening again. they said they will meet with union pacific about installing
