rivers hitting historic highs in the south. and a tornado threat for millions as we come on the air. jam session. a man accused of jamming cell phones. blocking calls so phones don't work. now he's facing charges. the device that causes calls to drop. and the big question tonight, is your cell phone safe? good evening, thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. we begin with the potential do or die showdown just two days away. and donald trump in an actual battle at his rallies. chaos erupting in kansas city saturday night, police using pepper spray on anti-trump demonstrators. trump accusing bernie sanders of sending protesters to his events. tuesday, voting in five states, ohio, governor john kasich out front, with 39%, followed by trump and cruz. rubio urging his supporters to back kasich.

and all the candidates talking about what's happening inside and outside trump rallies. and david wright starts us off tonight. >> it's just tear gas. >> reporter: tonight, a campaign under siege. forget occupy wall street, tonight, it's more like occupy donald trump. >> get him out of here. get him out. send him back to bernie. send him back. >> reporter: the latest example, today in bloomington, illinois. >> it was totally organized. troublemakers. troublemakers. the truth is, they're disruptors, not protesters. >> reporter: last night in kansas city, police used horses for crowd control. when that didn't work, they used pepper spray. i have a mouthful of pepper spray. trump blamed bernie sanders for the disruptions. in the crowd, we witnessed plenty of signs, he's right. these are mostly sanders

supporters. but that's not to say that the sanders campaign sent them. tensions have been growing. in chicago, trump cancelled a rally friday after too many protesters showed up. a pay -- melee erupted. in dayton, ohio, a lone protester rushed the podium, scaring trump and the secret service. and later, trump tweeted this image, claiming this guy is a supporter of isis. law enforcement doesn't buy that for a minute. >> all i know is what's on the internet. >> reporter: while trump says he doesn't condone violence, remember the guy that sucker-punched a protester in north carolina? trump now says he's considering paying his legal fees. >> i've instructed my people to look into it, yes. >> reporter: trump's rivals are seizing the moment. >> it's a disaster for the count. if donald is the nominee, it makes it much more likely that hillary clinton wins the general. >> reporter: another trump rally just getting under way.

all calm and respectful so far. trump calls it his second home. he's hoping to snatch it away from marco rubio on tuesday. tom? >> david, thank you. and let's get to jonathan karl. how does this unrest affect the voting in the big states on tuesday? >> in the short run, i don't think it hurts trump at all. first, his supporters are probably going to rally to his side, and a lot of people have already voted in those big states. in florida, because of early voting, more than 1 million republicans have already cast their votes. in ohio, they've been voting since the middle of february. but in the long run, it could really hurt trump, because he ultimately needs to unite republicans and eventually the entire country if he gets the nomination. this isn't going in the right direction. >> jon, thank you. now, to the democrats. hillary clinton, trying to seal

the democratic nomination with wins on tuesday. bernie sanders facing an uphill battle to claim delegates. polls show clinton leading in all five states. and the closest fight in illinois, 51-45. the two taking the stage for a town hall in maryland tonight. mary bruce on the campaign trail. >> reporter: tonight, bernie sanders is crying foul. as donald trump blames sanders supporters for the chaos at his rallies. >> he tells the truth very, very rarely. and i'm afraid on this occasion he's lying again. >> reporter: and he's pointing the finger back at trump. >> this is a man dividing up this country in very serious ways. >> reporter: donald trump is now threatening to send his supporters here to bernie sanders' rallies in an act of retaliation. a handful showed up in st. louis. with this playful dig at his backers. and in columbus, a different take. your message to trump supporters? >> feel the bern. >> reporter: as they battle it out in five key states ahead of

tuesday's primaries. and in ohio, hillary clinton made her final pitch, taking a jab at sanders. >> it's not enough if you want be president, to tell people what you're against. >> reporter: clinton hoping to avoid a repeat of last tuesday's loss in michigan by sweeping all five states. "saturday night live" poked fun at the challenges she faces from sanders. >> i'm sick and tired of hearing about my own damn e-mails! >> reporter: sanders is banking on big turnout among young voters. >> and i've got supporters of all ages, 18-year-olds, 19-year-olds. >> reporter: and bernie sanders has been spending a lot of time in ohio, where he says he feels the momentum heading into tuesday. but according to the polls, hillary clinton still holds the lead. tom? >> mary, thank you. and stay with abc news for primary results throughout the night on tuesday. we want to move on to breaking news from prince georges county, maryland. an officer, shot outside of a

police station. critically wounded, some residents told to shelter in place. a section of the 495 beltway closed to traffic. authorities confirming that two suspects in are in custody. gloria riviera, with the details. >> reporter: two suspects in kusdy. we know that more than a dozen police officers are holding vigil outside the trauma center where their colleague is being treated. authorities say they do not believe more than two shooters were involved, and are not commenting on whether the police officer was targeted. the fbi is now on the scene to assi

assist. tom? >> thank you. and we're following breaking news overseas. two separate terrorist attacks. in turkey, dozens killed in a huge explosion, the blast reportedly from a car bomb in the capital. several government agencies nearby. and in west africa, al qaeda claiming responsibility for a deadly assault. gunmen targeting three hotels. storming an ivory coast beach resort. alex marquardt with the new images coming in. >> reporter: a bloody sunday on two continents. in turkey's capital, emergency services responding after an explosion ripping through an area next to a bus stop and government buildings. debris and bombed-out cars. the dead and wounded carried away. more than 30 killed. the u.s. state department had warned of a potential attack. it was the fourth to hit turkey in six months, blamed on the two main enemies of turkey, the kurds and isis. and coming just after news from west africa that gunmen had stormed a beach in the ivory coast.

as they opened fire, witnesses said they shouted allahu akbar, god a great. security forces quickly surrounded the area. evacuating the wounded to safety. the government said 16 people were killed, in addition to 6 attackers, who were believed to be from the al qaeda affiliate in africa, after they claimed responsibility. it's the third time they've struck in the past four months. after carrying out deadly attacks on hotels in two other nearby countries, mali and burkina faso. the frequency of the global terror attacks is growing. whether it's turkey, west africa, or here in europe, intelligence officials say the question is not if, but when about the next terrorist attack. >> alex, thank you. back here at home, dangerous weather across the country. 5 million people facing a severe weather threat that could include tornadoes. massive destruction from historic flooding in the south now in full view. nearly 5,000 homes damaged in louisiana. phillip mena in the flood zone tonight.

>> reporter: tonight, communities across the south working to hold back the swollen rivers. in this covington, louisiana, neighborhood, families who were rescued by boat this weekend returning home to see the damage. we were with the engelhart family yesterday. when they were rescued. >> it didn't matter that my house was destroyed as long as my family was safe and sound. >> reporter: their home was spared. but right down the street, this house was one of nearly 5,000 across louisiana damaged by flooding. >> our house was surrounded. by the time we got out, the front and back met, and we knew it was over. we knew it was coming in the house. >> reporter: roadways under water. debris, even a flaming propane tank, floating among the submerged homes. and tonight, a new worry -- dangerous mold. the damaged baseboards and saturated drywall coming out. >> my son and i both have bad allergies, so getting the mold

is going to be our biggest concern. we want to get it taken care of. >> reporter: incredibly, this is the same neighborhood where the rescues took place just yesterday. so obviously, the skies have cleared up here. but just north of here, severe weather is on the move. many bracing for dangerous storms tonight. tom? >> phillip, thank you. let's go to indra petersons. we're watching systems all over the country tonight, right? >> the severe weather threat ramping up. oklahoma, arkansas, louisiana, a tornado watch through the overnight hours. that's the most dangerous times because storm systems can take people off-guard. these are fast-moving cells that could re-ignite the threat for flash flooding. in the pacific northwest, series of storms moving through. over 50,000 people in the seattle area currently without power. very strong winds, and the ground is saturated, ripping trees right out of the ground.

also bringing down power lines. 25-foot swells along the oregon coastline. 15-foot waves out there. and they do need the snow in the sierras, so hopefully putting a dent in the drought situations. >> indra, thank you so much. and now turning to new developments in the zika outbreak. more than 200 cases in 31 states. that number expected to rise. but scientists are fighting back. eva pilgrim with the radical new way to fight zika. >> reporter: tonight, a potential new weapon in the fight against zika virus. the fda researching a new experiment, using mosquitoes to help stop its spread. scientists releasing genetically modified mosquitoes. carrying a deadly gene that would make their offspring die before they're old enough to bite people. and in brazil, scientists are already using these mosquitoes. our dr. richard besser saw them firsthand in february. >> this building produces 2 million male mosquitoes genetically modified every week.

>> reporter: this comes as the cdc warns zika could spread in the united states in florida and texas by june. zika is linked to birth defects. and while the experiment has proven successful in brazil, not everyone is pleased. >> when you open this pandora box, it's no way to recall these mosquitoes. >> reporter: critics fear that changing dna is not safe. the cdc is taking comments before the final decision is made on the field test. tom? >> thank you. new developments involving the co-pilot in the crash in the french alps. he was reportedly referred to a psychiatric clinic two weeks before crashing the plane. all 150 people onboard killed
