broadcast center. this is abc7 news. a live look now from the abc7 rooftop and a much drier scene than we have seen. the rain may be behind us, but several problems remain. a large sinkhole opened up hitting a gas line and forcing hundreds to evacuate. san francisco has its share of problems from mudslides to fallen trees. i'm eric thomas. we are tracking what's left of the storm on live doppler 7hd. our team coverage includes a high surf warning in san francisco. that's where a sinkhole forced people to evacuate. abc7 news reporter sergio is live near the boulevard and center street. sergio, is the gas line still leaking?

>> it is not yet clear. off. let me show you what has been going on for the last couple hours. it is down the way where the sinkhole appeared and where that gas line was damaged. we can hear some very heavy equipment. that's where pg&e crews were trying to get to a section of that gas main so they can pinch it off. this is the sinkhole that triggered the evacuation. initially the biggest concern was buried power lines that may be compromised by the growing hole. then the traffic signal fell in and nicked the gas line. from a distance you can see how short it is now. >> officers saw the pole drop? >> that is correct and heard the gas escaping and a very loud noise and that's why we started evacuating people. >> within minutes hundreds of people were cleared out of the

busy shopping area including a lot of people who just sat down in a local theater to watch a movie. >> they said we need to ask you to evacuate and that's it. >> had the movie started? >> yes. >> some were separated from their cars and left out in the rain. >> so now we were strappedded here at the police -- stranded here at the police department. we were trying to uber and get a taxicab. >> about 450 people were cleared out of the shopping area and between 60 and 100 area homes were toll to shelter in place. pg&e crews worked to cutoff the leaking gas. >> right now the crews are locating and parking the rest of the line so we know exactly where to dig of the we are going to pinch off the line and inspect it to make sure there are no other problems based on this incident. >> it is not clear how many customers could have their gas service interrupted because of the repairs to the damaged line. in miraga, abc7 news. >> they are dealing with another problem from the weather. a landslide is damaging homes. in just minutes abc7 news

reporter cornell bernard is showing us what is being done for those homeowners. let's head now to meteorologist drew for a look at live weather doppler 7hd. >> we are tracking live doppler 7hd. we are getting you closer to street level. there is light rain from san ramon to pleasanton and back toward hayward. we'll move to the west around san mateo and even half moon bay. light scattered showers right now and this is the tail end of a storm that soaked the region over the weekend. look at the 48-hour rainfall totals. oakland two inches of rain and san francisco, mill valley, santa rosa and concord, over an inch of rain. future view shows you hour by hour 7:00 in the morning as you step out for work and school, it is not out of the question to have a lingering isolated shower, but monday afternoon is brighter and we are tracking 80-degree warmth on the seven-day forecast. i'll show you when. >> thanks a lot. heavy rains this afternoon

caused street flooding in danville. people who live at the bottom of a hill on west ridge avenue had a muddy mess to clean up. one man's backyard is now filled with dirt and debris. abc7 news reporter lilian kim is live in san francisco. lilian, a lot of damage around the city and a warning about going near the ocean tonight. >> reporter: eric, a high surf advisory is in affect until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. because of that people we talk to are playing it safe. from sonoma county to monterey county, beachgoers are told to be careful. breaking waves at the shoreline are expected to exceed 20 feet. at ocean beach dog walkers are keeping their distance. >> normally like today if the advise -- advisory was not out we would be walking along the water's edge. the dogs like to play in the water, but we are avoiding that today. >> reporter: farther inland it is the saturated soil that has people worried. a chunk of the hillside below

an apartment building gave way sending mud and a few boulders down the sidewalk. the city inspectors looked at the damage and they advised the property owner to call in a geo technical engineer. >> for an abundance of caution the property owner should go and make sure the property is safe and they don't need other kinds of shoring up so it remains stable. >> reporter: the latest storm took down plenty of trees, as many as 50. this one fell down in the presidio. along clement street and 33rd avenue a large branch crashed on a, pad car. parked car. >> i was watching a squirrel jump branch to branch to branch and then all of a sudden it started coming down slowly and poof right on top of the car. >> reporter: despite all of the mess, the past few days haven't been as bad as last weekend. where city crews saw twice as much damage. lilian kim, abc7 news. people faced delays and other headaches because of the storm across the north bay it

will take them three hours to remove a fallen tree. the drivers found themeses -- themselves stuck in a flood and they removed themselves from the floodwaters. you can see the impact of the storm in a place where there should be water. the russian water surged toward its banks this afternoon. people who live in a mobile home park are spending the night with relatives after the nearby creek threatened to flood their homes. it is taking place at the thousand trails mobile home park in morgan hill. once the creek began to rise, the people in the nearby thousand trails mobile home park had to make an important decision. >> we had a choice to either stay in -- get flooded in or get flooded out. >> reporter: her family decided to stay in until the creek decided to swell. >> we had to evacuate 175

people due to the rising creek that was going to flood the park. >> reporter: the big fear was that the creek would swamp the bridge that connects the camp to watsonville road and residents would be trapped. >> it was scary confusion. i didn't know. at the moment i was trying to grab whatever and trying to tell my kids to grab whatever they can grab. >> reporter: some decided to stay with friend or family. the red cross is helping find shelter for the rest. some are calling this cal fire station home. >> we moved them in here and about 30 to 50 people are here. >> reporter: elsewhere several customers in dublin had no water service and here is why. a broken water pipe was gushing water earlier tonight. the alameda county fire department posted this video of the leak. the streets will be closed around the school tomorrow morning so expect delays. the school district officials will be out tomorrow to see if there is is any damage to the playground. water service was turned off for a couple of hours while

accused of stealing high end sunglasses and frames. the crime happened at bayside family optometry. investigators released this surveillance pictures of the man and woman. police believe they also stole from another eyeglass store in january. san francisco police are searching for four men who attacked a woman for her cell phone. it ped that 11:00 thursday night in the bay view district of the a woman was walking home on van dyke avenue when she noticed men following her. she ran and two chased after her. one shoved her to the ground and another grbed her cell -- grabbed her cell phone. back to the storms causing so many problems. live doppler 7hd showing a few scattered showers sticking around. we'll let you know when things will dry out for a long stretch. also ahead on abc7 news at 11:00, a near miss on the train tracks. the technology that stopped what could have been a tragedy. and later -- >> troublemakers, troublemakers. they are not protesters. they are disrupters.

wine country and all the bay area. this is abc7 news. >> live doppler 7hd is showing a lot less green tonight. we are still seeing scattered showers right now. drew is going to join us in a few minutes to tell us when we'll dry out. in moraga, a landslide ripped two homes from their foundation. they are on augusta drive and at any moment a shift in the soil could destroy both. cornell bernard found out

homeowners are blaming a local utility. >> that's pretty impressive. i have never seen earth move like that. >> reporter: tim alfred's home is hanging by a thread. a small landslide that started last tuesday has claimed much of the hill and ripped his home's foundation away leaving it in shambles. >> it has been a sort of slow mowing process and it dropped feet each day. >> reporter: the landslide is swallowing the earth below the home. >> it has fallen another four or five feet and it is getting precarious. >> reporter: the neighbors are pitching in to help move clothes and belongings out of their homes this are too dangerous to eleven in. >> we all just want everybody to know they are in our prayers and blessings. >> they are worried they could be next. >> we are just watching in fear. >> they own the hillside and she and others blame the utility for not doing more to prevent land slides.

>> to think a utility would know something like this was a possibility and to not warn the community about it -- >> east bay mud says a recent soil study never warned of more landslide danger here. >> we are working with the homeowners as far as all of the specifics. i think right now is the immediate situation. >> the slides occur throughout the bay area and it is difficult when mother nature has plans that don't align with ours. >> east bay mud says they plan to hire a geo technical expert to assess the situation and create a plan on how to keep the land from sliding even further. meantime folks wondering when they will be able to return to their homes. in moraga, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> crews could finish knocking down an apartment building on the edge of a cliff in pacifica. they were working rain or shine throughout the weekend.

the tenants moved out because the erosion weakened the homes. it has accelerated this winter. we all felt the rainfall and in the sierra the snow is falling thanks to the same storm. you can see it in some video provided by north star california resort. we spoke to a spokesperson via skype and he shares details about the latest round of new snow. >> you know, it has been an incredible 48-hour run. over 29 inches at 7,800 feet. down at lake level it is starting to pile up about six to eight inches. >> right now you must use chains on most vehicles. westbound 80 is closed large trucks from the never mef state line to apple gate and chains required between twin bridges and myers. extreme weather and excessive speed are being blamed for a near miss on the train tracks in novato.

sheriff deputies say a smart train almost hit a pick up truck from the 101 off-ramp this morning. one of our viewers sent us this video. deputies say the smart train was traveling slowly and was able to stop in time. more on the weather now and when the sun will join us. joy -- >> i feel like a lot of people want to see more sunshine after the soaking we got and you'll have it on the seven-day forecast. live doppler 7hd and showers are peppering parts of the region. we'll get you down to street level. light showers indicated by the light green on your screen. that will move into the livermore area of the we'll take you to south bay near milpitas. light rain and mostly cloudy in the south bay. we'll take you along san mateo and belmont and even around a -- around half moon bay. the storm that moved through created an active ocean current. we have a high surf advisory

in affect through monday evening. waves as high as 18 feet and that means dangerous rip currents through tomorrow evening. it has been a wet start to the month of march. the tiers 13 day -- the first 13 days, nearly several inches of rain and that's four times the normal amount we see this time of the year. you notice san jose over 300% of normal and santa rosa close to 350% of normal for the first 13 days of march. right now we are at 56 in san francisco and 58 in concord. right now santa rosa, the cool spot coming in with a temperature of 53 degrees. overnight we will have a fair amount of cloud cover overhead. we'll drop to 50 in san rafael and 52 san francisco and down to 51 in san jose. the same in oakland overnight. the future weather will pick it up from there. monday morning 7:00 and future weather is hinting there will likely be an isolated shower. most everyone will see dry

conditions and clouds overhead. the rain chances diminish midday and by the afternoon we will see some breaks in the sunshine, but a cool north wind will keep temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s. 59 in san francisco with a little afternoon sunshine. 62 in san jose and a cool high of 58 degrees in santa rosa. the next seven days we will do a 180. no significant storms on the horizon. we will stay dry through this weekend. we will also have warm temperatures that will peak on thursday. there are warm winds and it will go up 10 degrees to the upper 60s to the upper 70s. a brief break in the wet weather for much of next week. here is the seven-day forecast. it is a peek of

cleaning up all sorts of damage. you can see some of the damage. part of a tree falling on to a car next to lincoln park. at least 25 trees fell across san francisco. there is no danger right now after a mudslide developed under an apartment building. it is along 17th street on the eastern slope of twin peeks. pg&e is patching a natural gas main in moraga. a sinkhole caused that main to break. there is the sinkhole. as a precaution they evacuated more than 400 people from a nearby shopping center. that included moviegoers in a movie theater and diners at restaurants. nearby residents may not have gas for their furnaces and the water heaters. now to your voice and your vote. in the race for president it was donald trump versus everybody else. violence is a central theme before another super tuesday primary in five states.

george's county says a gunman opened fire on the first officer he saw. the officer died after being rushed to a hospital. other officers wounded the suspected it gunman. he is now in custody along with another man linked to the attack. the fallen officer spent four years on the force. he was going to turn 29 in just a few days. now to west africa's ivory coast. a group linked to al-qaeda is claiming responsibility for an attack that left 22 people dead at a beach resort. site intelligence monitors the jihadist websites. they posted a declaration on-line calling three attackers heros for this weekend's assault. the country's president says at least 14 civilians and two members of security forces were killed along with six assailants. >> the united states is condemning an attack in the turkish capitol that killed 34 people and injured at least 125 more. a car bomb ripped through a busy square.

cores of police cars and firefighters were rushed to the scene. government officials are blaming kurdish militants for the attack. last month 28 people died when military vehicles in the capitol were attacked. scientists have come up with a radical new approach to fight the zika virus. a genetically modified male mosquito will be released no the wild carrying a deadly gene. it makes the off spring die before they are ole enough to bite people. brazil is the ready thattest hit by the zika virus. >> this building here produces two million more mosquitoes and genetically modified for the week. >> nearly 200 cases have been confirmed and it is expected to rise. the food and drug administration is investigating possible testing in florida. that doesn't sit well with residents in the florida keys where the insects would be released. a decision is expected as

105-year-old tyrus wong. >> i think he is the most amazing person i met in my life. >> wong is an artist. >> i love to paint. anything else i am not good at all. >> a film is premiering at him at san francisco's historic castro theater, but you probably know him from a different film. wong was the lead artist for "bambi." >> the background is is basically chinese brush painting. a few strokes, colors to show emotion and that really transform animation. >> it wasn't an easy road. as a child entering the u.s. wong was detained for a month on angel island, separated from his father. >> every day i stay there was, every day miserable. miserable. i hated that place. >> but then he went to art schoolworking to pay his way. >> they liked my painting so i stayed there day and night.
