live from the kgo tv broadcast center this is abc 7 news. >> good afternoon, thank you for joining us today. homes are in peril. a landslide threatening to send at least two homes down the cliff and more could soon be at risk. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm dan ashley. larry biel has the day off. the landslide is affecting homes near moraga. >> the homes started sliding last tuesday. abc news reporter laura anthony has the latest. >> reporter: the rain stopped but the trouble is just beginning for two families in moraga after a weekend deluge weakened the hillside behind them and seriously underminded their homes. >> very precarious. just because the rain stopped doesn't mean there's not going

to be further sliding and earth movement. we're very concerned. >> reporter: the land directly behind the two damaged homes is a watershed. in january, there was a smaller slide that damaged the bike trail. east bay mod and east bay regional parks closed the trail but saw no threat at the time to the homes above it. >> the area was assessed and at that time there was no evidence. at that point in time we acted on the information that we had. the information that we had told us that the issue was here, along the trail. >> we've been out since friday. >> reporter: tim owns the house that sustained most of the damage. he moved his family out and is now working with an attorney in east bay which he believes could have been more communicative two months ago. >> no initial contact directly from them about this. now that i've gotten over a little bit of an initial scramble, it's pretty infuria infuriating were this is what it looks like. the live picture of this backyard. this is tim all ford's backyard.

this happened in the last few days. they put out this white sheeting but tell me they can't do much more at this point because it's too dangerous for the workers to even be out here. they're going to make sure it dries out a little bit more before they determine the next steps. in the meantime, two families have moved out of their homes. in moraga, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. a section of boulevard in moraga will remain closed several days as crews repair a sink hole that opened there yesterday afternoon. hundreds remain without gas service which was cut off with a traffic light pole fell and crashed into a natural gas line. authorities evacuated dozens of nearby businesses and told residents of 1 00 00 or so home shelter in place. no estimate so far on when gas service will be restored. in pacifica a sinkhole opened up behind the fire department. sky 7 hd was over the sink hole which is already boarded up. caution tape around it shows the small area blocked off in the

parking lot. a babies "r" us store is dealing with a partially caved in roof. sky 7 hd was over the store on serramonte boulevard. see a 25 x 25 foot portion of the roof had just collapsed ok there. that babies "r" us is close indefinitely, of course, until crews fix the damage. the wet weather moved on for at least now. let's take a live look outside from our camera on mt. tam. everything looks lush and green there after all that rain. >> spencer christian is here with an accuweather update. spencer, certainly a welcome change. >> you're right about that, dan, ama. great to see a bright sunny day like this after all the days of rain we've had. let's go to sky 7 hd. ny skies . san francisco, oakland had identical rainfall totals. both checking in at 1.73 inches of rain. nearly 3 1/2 of it in mt. st. helena. just under 3 inches at kent field. 5 1/3.

look how little l rain was measured at san jose. compared to the other locations. now,s let's take a look at where this puts us in terms of percent of average rainfall for the season to date. most bay area locations are near or even above 100% of the average rainfall levels for this point in the season. although oakland airport lags a bit behind at only 87% of average. here's a view from our rooftop camera. mainly blue skies over the bay. 58. 37 degrees. 61 at oakland and san jose. 62 mountain view. 57 at half moon bay. here's the view looking at the golden gate bridge with blue skies above. it's currently 60 degrees in santa rosa and napa. 59 novato, fairfield and concord, both 62. livermore 59 degrees. i'll show you quite a warmup coming our way in the week ahead in just a few minutes. dan and ama? >> thank you, spencer. march is proving to be a

miracle when if comes to the status of california's largest reservoir. this is video from a while back but the weekend storms helped shasta lake reach a key milestone in its effort to recover from the drought. reached 100% of historic average sunday as billions of gallons continued to flow into the 21 mile reservoir. >> that is encouraging obviously. three former san jose state students have been sentenced today for harassing their roommate doing things like putting a bike lock around his neck. >> the case sparked outrage on campus. abc 7 news reporter janet o is live at the hall of justice in san jose with the outcome. janet? >> reporter: yeah, ama, friends and family of the victim say the sentencing does not reflect what happened on campus and everything that they fought for. meantime, the university sent out a letter late this afternoon saying this type of behavior is unacceptable from any student, in this case, now former students. colin warren, one of the three defendants in this case, quickly walked out of the courthouse

with his attorneys. his co-defendant logan beaschler seen here at an earlier date was present at today's hearing but joseph bomgardner was not. his attorney said -- >> i think the sentencing is fair. >> reporter: the other two former san jose state students will get 30 days in jail or weekend work. all three will be on probation two years, serve 50 hours community service and take a cultural training class. it's a light sentence if you ask the victim's attorney. >> essentially we asked for 120 days because we think that's the appropriate sentence given the conduct of the three defendants. >> reporter: many called the conduct of the three defendants a hate crime but the jury disagreed. in the fall of 2013 the young men put a bike long around their black roommate's next. d.j. williams seen at the trial was not at the sentencing today he told school officials he was taunted with racial slurs for months. last month the defendants were found guilty of misdemeanor battery charges, something

family and friends disagree with even now. >> any time you put a lock around their neck, it's racially motivated. >> reporter: friends say d.j. is a third year at san jose focusing on school. obstacles his parents say continue to have a lasting impact. >> i just want to thank everybody for their support and their prays and the outcries that the community has let us know that they're very impacted as we are were in san jose, janet o, abc 7 news. more problems on the uc berkeley campus. cal men's basketball assistant coach yann hafnagel has been fired for violating the university's sexual harassment policy. he responded on twitter writing "right now the only focus should be on our basketball team, my time to exonerate myself of a fruitless claim by a reporter will come." this was hufnagel's second season with the cal bears. stanford fired head coach

johnny dawkins after eight years with the men's team. dawkins made the ncaa tournament once in that time and never won the pac 12. this year the team finished 15-15, ninth place in the pac-12. the at lhletic director says th school will begin a search for his replacement. san francisco police officer known as the hot cop of castro back in court today accused of hit-and-run. he allegedly hit two men with his personal vehicle in november then ditched his car. he turned himself in the next day. the victims' brother says his brother is still healing. abc 7 news caught up with him as he went to court. >> chris, one of the victims in the accident just started walking three weeks ago. do you have anything to say? >> no comments right now. >> is he remorseful? >> of course he is. i mean, the idea that somebody should be hurt is something terrible. he feels horrible about that. >> he remains on medical leave. he will be back in court on april 19th. if found guilty, he would likely lose his job. a vta light rail train

crashed into an suv today after police say the driver pulled in front of the train. sky. 7 hd shows the train stopped at north capitol avenue and mayberry road. the driver was injured and taken to the hospital. 20 passengers on the train were transferred to another vehicle and taken to their next stop. a high-speed chase in san mateo ended with a serious crash. started with a report of a car break-in near harvard road and ended with a crash near el camino real and hillsdale. >> reporter: a high-speed chase through san mateo ended early this morning, the suspect's stolen car mangled. the pair crashed into a concrete pole outside the hillsdale mall before 5:00 a.m. sergeant rick decker says it all started when someone in the crystal springs neighborhood called police to report someone trying to break into cars. one officer spotted them. the two male suspects sped off southbound on el camino. >> as they were driving they were throwing stolen property

out the windows so they'd been out victimizing vehicles throughout the night. >> reporter: they hit another car and slammed into a cement pole. both were taken into custody and to the hospital where they're being treated for injuries. one of them has been identified as a 23-year-old from oakland who has a long history or violent offenses. >> the unfortunate part is because of changes, more often than night, like today, previous violent offenders committing nonviolent or property-related crimes. >> reporter: the car is gone but it slammed into the pole ripping it apart. there's broken glass all over the ground and the tire tracks in the bed of flowers. in san mateo, elissa harrington, abc 7 news. the highway patrol is mourning the loss of nathan taylor, died from injuries last night a day after he was hit by a car on westbound 80 near truckee where he was investigating a separate accident. the 35-year-old had been with the chp's gold run office for six years. he previously worked at the san jose chp office which said, rest

inciting violence with his supporte ers supporters. >> reporter: as bernie sanders fights for another upset polling behind hillary clinton in all five states holding primaries tomorrow. >> and he is busy today holding five events in three states. meanwhile, donald trump is clearly feeling confident here in florida, canceling an event here tonight to instead hold a rally in ohio. marcie gonzalez, abc news miami. the future of historic location in san francisco is taking an unexpected turn. >> a san francisco flower mart which was threatened only a couple years ago is now expa expanding. >> abc 7 news anchor kristen sze with details. >> reporter: a real estate doesn't usually get everyone excited, right, but it does when it secures the future of the san francisco flower mart. everything is coming up roses for the second largest wholesale flower market in the country. the development company which already owns the flower mart announced today it also bought a two-acre site next door. now owns seven acres between fifth and sixth streets.

flower vendors battled a year and a half ago when kilroy bought the property and considered putting the flower business underground. that's no longer on the drawing board. these are artist renderings we're going to show you of what the new flower mart will look like. vendors are excited that the new layout includes easier access for delivery trucks. >> it's going to help because they'll build a new building for the flower mart so we'll have offices and i think it's fwigoi to be a small shopping center and bring more customers. >> when it's completed the flower mart will san francisco's largest market. kilroy paid $31 million cash and another $56 million in stock to the family that owned the land. now, this project is part of the makeover of the central south of market area. it's one block from a future central subway stop at fourth and brannen. planting the seeds for a vibrant commercial area with the flower mart as anchor. ama? >> all right, thank you so much, kristen.

well, it may soon be more difficult to enjoy an iconic view of san francisco. the metropolitan transportation agency is calling for a ban of all vehicle traffic on the eastern side of twin peaks. that's the side with the spectacular views. if approved, cars and buses would be limited to the ocean side of the slope. mta officials say the change would make things safer for cyclists and pedestrians. a criminal investigation is under way because of a video that surfaced online showing a man urinating on one of kellogg's factory assembly lines. the company says it learned of the video friday and immediately alerted authorities. kelloggs says its own investigation determined the video was recorded at its memphis, tennessee, factory in 2014. it says any products that would have been affected would be past their expiration date. the potentially contaminated products included rice rice krispie treats and gra knoll that. chipotle's top workers are

until 9:00 tonight. waves could reach heights of 15 feet. there's a risk of large breakers, sneaker waves and risk, of course, of being swept into the ocean. so might be a good idea to stay away from the coast side for a while. overnight we'll see a couple little patches of fog. they'll disappear quickly tomorrow and it will warm up before midday into the afternoon hours. and that will be the beginning of a week of warming. in fact, for the week ahead, the high temperature trend in san jose looks like this. the average high in san jose this time of year 67 degrees. notice thursday it will be 76 in san jose. we'll see low to mid 70s for most of the seven-day period with temperatures dropping back into the upper 60s. the pattern will be the same. we'll see temperatures climbing through thursday when the warming peaks at about 67 degrees. the average high this time of year, 63 in san francisco. then friday, saturday, sunday,

live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. in news making headlines at 4:30, the rain has stopped from now but the impact from our storms continues. east bay mud is working with two neighbors in moraga whose homes are on an eroding cliff. sky 7 hd shows us the damage. both families have been evacuated. the utility owns the area behind the home. neighbors say the slide began in january. also in moraga, abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield covered the story of a sinkhole and tweeted this picture saying it forced the closure of a gym and post office. el nino storms are creating potholes on bay area freeways. you've seen them or felt them. sergio quintana tweeted this video. several drivers got flat tires along the pass. he'll explain why the issue has the chp teaming up with caltran ahead in a live report on abc 7

news at 5:00. amtrak is trying to figure out what went wrong after a train from los angeles to chicago derailed in kansas injuring 29 people and now investigators are looking into the possibility that a car accident had previously damaged the tracks. abc news reporter lana zach has more. >> reporter: national transportation safety board is investigating the latest train derailment, this one in rural kansas where local teams have been the first on the scene. >> upon arrival we found amtrak had overturned about 2 1/2 miles west of simron. >> reporter: frightening reports coming in after midnight. >> train deraillmenderailment, amount of patients at this time. >> reporter: at least seven train cars jumped the tracks, at least 29 people reporting injuries. a medical chopper team air lifting at least one injured patient. there were a total of 142 passengers on board. most landed at this makeshift evacuation center. many still shaken by what they'd

experienced. >> one gentleman just stopped me and kind of in the darkness of the field and said, you know, friends, friends. you're right. what's going on? is there any blood? i signed the spotlight, the face was very bloodied. >> reporter: authorities are optimistic there will not be fatali fatalities. we do not know the cause of this accident, though. they will be looking at factors like speed and possible obstructions on the track. lana zach, abc news, washington. president obama met today with jason rezian the "washington post" reporter released from an iranian prison in january. the two spoke privately during the president's visit to the state department. the president was pleased to have an opportunity to welcome rezaian home. he grew up in marin county and many of his relatives still live here. russian president vladimir putin ordered the start of the pullout of troops from syria. putin said the move should help serve as a stimulus for syria's

political talks. the pullout is expected to start tomorrow. a russian air base and naval facility will continue to operate in syria. next year san francisco students will have something new to learn about. sex trafficking. the curriculum will touch on so-called comfort women. those are korean girls and women who were taken by the japanese during world war ii and forced to have sex with soldiers. yung sue lee was one of those women and was in san francisco this morning to give the curriculum her blessings. >> make sure the curriculum we present is accurate and correct and sensitive to the victims. >> korea is deleting the term "comfort women" from its textbooks but lee wants it used in the subject will start next fall as part of the health curriculum. parts of u.s. recovering from severe weather as powerful storms hit other areas. tornadoes spotted in arkansas

and ohio. this touched down in rural southeast ohio. because of its remote location, the damage was minimal despite 105 mile per hour winds. still, several barns were destroyed and one home had its roof and doors ripped off. >> we see it happen all the time. you never think it will happen to you. here we are. hopefully, we're safe, pets, all safe and accounted for. feeling pretty blessed it's just structural damage, just things to us. you know, not people and not animals. >> heavy rain caused severe flooding in parts of the south. texas and missouri over the weekend. today, crews pulled three vehicles that were submerged in water in springfield, missouri. this time last year the north bay had a lot in common with the rest of california, dry with no rain in sight and water rationing on the horizon. >> what a difference a year can make. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman is live in marin county with that story. wayne? >> reporter: well, take a look at this water behind me. all this water still flowing

from the rains last weekend. you might say the force of this is symbolic of the relief that marin county residents feel in terms of, well, they're getting over the drought, anyway. it's pretty good news. don't misunderstand, much of california we still do have a drought, but in marin county right now, they cannot bank another drought. in marin county, an embarrassment of riches. phoenix lake is like any other reservoir in this region right now, not only is it full, it's runeth over. >> running over. >> reporter: the municipal water district engineering manager mike vaughn looked at his computer screen and saw a stack of three-figure capacity numbers. each tells the story of the reservoir and it's happened late in the year. >> that's a significant thing for us. that means that the creeks will be running for a little bit longer and we'll be in good shape for a while. >> reporter: such good shape if not another drop of water fell anywhere in marin, the county would not run out for two years.

new research claims people at risk of a stroke can face an increased risk after daylight saving time. a slight increase in stroke-related hospitalizations in the two weeks after we move clocks ahead this hour which we did this past weekend. doctors say the findings shouldn't scare anyone but highlight why it's good for people to know risk factors. >> common risk factors, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle and we're now learning that even having an irregular sleep pattern has an association with stroke. >> the findings didn't show a direct cause and effect, they affirmed the results of previous studies, an upset in circadian rhythm can impact a person's health. women need more sleep than men and blueberries have more than you thought. >> ladies, researchers in england say women need more

sleep than men because obviously their brains are more complex. the scientists say for women poor sleep is strongly associated with depression, anger and psychological distress. a large-scale study says short men and overweight women get a raw deal in life. the std study say many are dest to make less money than taller fitter peers. height didn't have much impact on women's earnings but being overweight did. researchers now believe blueberries could play a role in preventing alzheimer's. the first study followed 47 adults with mild cognitive impairment ages 68 and older who received a portion of freeze dried blueberry powder equivalent to a serving of fresh blueberries or placebo powder for a total of 16 weeks. nose who had the blueberry powder demonstrated an improvement in cognitive performance and brain function in comparison with those who received the placebo. previous research has attributed protection against cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and

forms of cancer from blueberries. and lawses to raise the age for legalized vaping aren't working as planned. it actually increased the number of teens smoking rates according to a recent study. the restrictions published on march 10th in the "journal of medicine" include the increase in legal ages for purchasing e-cigarettes, and more. i'm jane king, here's to your health. a handful of assembly members are proposing a sales tax on candy saying it will reduce obesity and generate revenue per year. they say by not, the state is a de facto enabler of child diabetes, diabetes and dental decay. the measure would need a 2/3 vote in the legislature and by voters, similar effort, by the way, failed in 1992. >> time for "ask finney." 7 on your side's michael finney

erin's parents' home february 29th. they planned to spend a week here then move to this apartment at ucsf where jeremy, a neuroscientist, had just been hired. friday night, march 3rd, their fully loaded van was parked in front of their parents' home. >> saturday morning my son-in-law comes in said, jim, did you move the truck? and i said, no, i did not move the truck. and so he says, well, i think it's missing. >> it was just, like, who moved a 16-foot truck in the middle l of the night? >> reporter: it's been almost two weeks. they've moved into their new apartment. the truck is still missing. the bare apartment is testimony to that. nevertheless, the two are grateful. >> our family and friends have pulled together and helped us out. >> reporter: the bed donated by friends. the dining room table is from erin's parents. and the baby toys were also given to them. but it's the priceless things like the baby book erin so lovingly put together that's irreplaceable. >> no one needs that but me and my son, my family.

>> live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. there are new allegations tonight of sexual harassment against another uc berkeley staff member, this time the assistant coach for the men's basketball team. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> i'm kristen sze. that coach, yann hafnagel asked to leave effective immediately, less than one week after the law school dean resigned also related to sexual harassment. lyanne melendez comes to us live at uc berkeley. a horrible time for the basketball team. >> reporter: they're in the spotlight as we all know. the person accusing the assistant coach is not affiliated with the school, confirmed by a spokesperson here to abc news. now, of course, the coach will not travel with the team. he was immediately fired and now has eight days to respond. coach yann hafnagel had been with the men's basketball team

two years. the allegations of sexual harassment came to light last summer. an investigation began in august. today the uc berkeley office of harassment and discrimination concluded that hufnagel violated the sexual harassment policy. >> we took action immediately. the employee was notified of intent to terminate immediately. >> reporter: no more details were given. this morning hufnagel tweeted "right now the only focus should be on our family team. my time to exonerate myself of a fruitless claim by a reporter will come." >> you have to deal with it. you have to push forward. we lost a valuable piece in our program. it's unfortunate. we continue to push forward. we talk to our guys about life situations all the time. >> reporter: the dean of the law school resigned after a former administrative assistant filed a civil claim against him for sexual harassment something he admitted doing. despite the internal investigation, the university never fired him. he received a cut in pay by 10% and forced to write a letter of apology. two other big na
