the allegations of sexual harassment came to light last summer. an investigation began in august. today the uc berkeley office of harassment and discrimination concluded that hufnagel violated the sexual harassment policy. >> we took action immediately. the employee was notified of intent to terminate immediately. >> reporter: no more details were given. this morning hufnagel tweeted "right now the only focus should be on our family team. my time to exonerate myself of a fruitless claim by a reporter will come." >> you have to deal with it. you have to push forward. we lost a valuable piece in our program. it's unfortunate. we continue to push forward. we talk to our guys about life situations all the time. >> reporter: the dean of the law school resigned after a former administrative assistant filed a civil claim against him for sexual harassment something he admitted doing. despite the internal investigation, the university never fired him. he received a cut in pay by 10% and forced to write a letter of apology. two other big names in the

academic world resigned after similar allegations. on friday, uc president janet napolitano demanded senior leaders including deans be current in sexual harassment training. the state requires they take a two-hour training course every two years. >> we know that there needs to be reform. i don't know what reform is going to look like yet, but i know that our leadership is committed to taking swift action. >> reporter: napolitano has appointed a me to look into ways to deal for efficiently with these cases involving faculty. at uc berkeley, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. meantime a former silicon valley venture capitalist forced out of his job by a sexual abuse lawsuit says it's all just extortion. michael goguin at sequoia capital formerly filed a countersuit against a woman who sued him. she claims he rescued her from human traffickers who forced her to work in a strip club but kept sexually, physically and emotionally abusing her for 13 years. she says he agreed to pay her

$40 million but only paid her $10 million. the countersuit says they agreed to $10 million and he wants the money back. he claims the relationship was consensual but fell apart when he would not commit to her. three former san jose state university students may be facing jail time for putting a bike lock around their roommate's neck. it was a stunning campus incident that many viewed as a hate crime. abc 7 these janet o is live at san jose's hall of justice with details from today's sentencing. >> reporter: the three former san jose state state students face consequences for their actions today but some say the trio got away with a light sentence for serious offenses. the victim, d.j. williams, did testify at the trial but was not at the sentencing today. his parents were. >> i want to thank everybody for their support and their prayers and the outcry that the community has let us know they're very impacted as we are. >> reporter: williams says her

son, anyothen a 17-year-old freshman, has emotional scars from 2013. he was called the "n" word and other racial slurs by three white roommates. last month they were convicted of misdemeanor battery for putting a bike lock around his neck. the jury deadlocked and ended up dropping the more serious hate crime charges. colin warren is one of the roommates. he told the judge he was truly sorry and didn't imagine the impact he would have on williams and his family. his co-defendant logan beaschler seen covering his face as he leaves a previous hearing. joseph bomguarder in was not at the hearing. >> his attorney said -- >> i thought it was fair. >> reporter: the other two san jose state students will get 30 days in jail or weekend work. all three will be on probation two years, have to serve 50 hours community service and take a cultural training class. >> essentially we asked for 120 days because we think that that's the appropriate sentence given the conduct of the three

defendants. >> reporter: friends say d.j., now a third year at san jose state, is focusing on school. >> looking to move forward. >> reporter: the williams family has filed a civil lawsuit and is seeking $5 million in damages from the university and the defendants. in san jose, janet o, abc 7 news. some amtrak and ace trains in the east bay have been delayed because of concerns of a possible landslide down the tracks. sky 7 hd caught up with this amtrak train stopped on the tracks in fremont temporarily. it is the second train that we know of that was held for a time in fremonfremont. the first was an ace train. ace says the number 4 train is 17 minutes behind schedule now. crews were checking for dirt along the tracks in niles canyon. an ace train derailed in niles canyon last week because of a mudslide. and heavy rains over the weekend caused a hillside in moraga to give way. that landslide is threatening homes on augusta drive near the moraga country clubs.

homeowners say the hill behind their homes started sliding last tuesday. the land directly behind the two homes is an east bay mud water shed. in january a smaller slide damaged a bike trail. east bay mud and east bay regional parks closed that trail but saw no threats to the home above it. a tree came crashing down next to a home in walnut creek today. look at the pictures from sky 7 hd. blocked the homes' driveway but doesn't appear to have caused major damage. big tree, though. the tree was in good health but uprooted in soil oversaturated with rain. back to moraga. a section of green boulevard will remain closed several days as crews repair a sinkhole that opened yesterday afternoon. hundreds remain without gas service which was cut off when a traffic light pole fell and crashed into a natural gas line. authorities evacuated dozens of nearby businesses and told residents of 100 or so homes to shelter in place. no estimate so far when gas service will be restored. erosion from heavy rains has cut off a section of highway 101

north of napa. the closure may last for weeks we're told. as you can see, the edge of the roadway is severely compromised there. this is happening northeast of napa. there are road problems, in fact, all over the bay area. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana is live along highway 101 near the old candlestick park with that story. sergio? >> reporter: well, southbound traffic here on the bay shore freeway slowed down several times today as cal trans crews came out to do emergency pothole repairs. that's a problem that's plaguing the entire bay area after these storms. freeways across the bay area have been hit hard and so have drivers who've had blowouts from potholes on these roads. at the pass, marco reyes had to come to the rescue from stockton. his parents had a blowout on their way to an appointment in san francisco. >> i guess they got stuck in a pothole or something. the tire popped. the second time this happened. >> reporter: his sister was riding in the car. her mom was driving. the blowout was startling.

>> she was like, what do i do? like, just pull over. we didn't want to pull over in front of, like, on the freeway so we just came in through here. >> reporter: we saw a lot of people with problems caused by potholes across the freeway. this tow truck hauled a blowout victim and his car away then there was this, a california highway patrol officer conducting a rolling road block to slow down vehicles through the pass. chp tells us the slower traffic helps drivers avoid the potholes and helps cal trans crews stay safe who are out on these emergency pothole operations. >> we know sometimes it delays traffic. we try not to do these repairs during commute hours but sometimes you don't have any choice. >> reporter: cal trans crews have been dispatched across the bay area to fill these holes but some storm-related damage may take more than a little temporary asphalt. sergio quintana, abc 7 news. in pacifica, an apartment complex hanging on the edge of a cliff is all gone. new video from sky 7 hd shows what's left at 320 esplanade.

crews spent the weekend tearing it down because the ground benote the building is so badly eroded that it's at risk of tumbling over the cliff and right into the ocean. a high-speed chase in san mateo began with car burglaries and ended with a serious crash in front of hillsdale mall this morning. the chase began when police responded to reports of someone trying to break into cars in the baywood crystal l springs neighborhood. two men set off southbound in el camino real in a stolen car, hit another vehicle and crashed into a concrete pole outside the mall. the two were arrested and hospitalized with non life threatening injuries. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a head-on crash on highway 4 near discovery bay that left two p k people dead. two cars collided a mile east of old river bridge road around 11:30 last night. roberto and maria died sadly when their car went into a ravine. their three children were res e rescued. a gofund me page has been set up

. one san francisco company is addressing the real estate problem in a very innovative way. startup campsite is leasing office space in shipping containers. no kidding. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow took a tour and is live with the story. >> reporter: talk about making the most of what you are have. the san francisco startup's campsite leases the office space behind me. their lease includes this entire parking lot so they decided to put it to use. they brought in the shipping container and now they are leasing space out of the shipping container. pretty soon the one you see here on the ground floor will be perched on top of two others. even getting into this office space is innovative. as long as you don't forget your

cell phone. >> these days it's less common than losing your keys, right? >> reporter: after 13 years in construction management, campsite co-founder, dennis, said he saw the need for more flexible real estate. >> the boom cycle, you can't build enough buildings and in the bust cycle they freeze. they're modular, relocateable and funky and quirky. >> reporter: the shipping container we're standing is in from china. it like lie carried everything from clothing to toys. now it boasts air-conditioning nd even adjustable desks. area of the container are covered with sound insulatiing materials. the name campsite is purposeful. a temporary space with a small footprint. >> the goal is flexibility. >> reporter: short-term leases range from $30 an hour to $150 a day or $3 2rkz $3,200 a

the containers are earthquake ready. this one 30 feet up on top of two others. the company is working with a planning commission to build in other parking lots. >> people don't realize how much waste there is. >> reporter: innovative design in a city that needs all the space it can get. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. old muni buses are helping some people in san francisco stay a little cleaner. abc 7 news was in the tenderloin as this blue bus parked on golden gate avenue is a retired muni bus that has been redesigned on the inside. take a look. it now has two showers and toilets. the bus is one of two that's moved around the city by a company to give homeless people a place to shelter. about 30 people use it at each stop. >> can be clean, it makes them feel better about socializing with other people. >> the shower bus is trying out a new location next to st.

anthony's which is expanding its winter shelter program during the rainy season. the buses cost about $75,000 to repurpose into mobile showers. b.a.r.t.'s fleet of the future is now on its way to the bay area. the first of the cars that will make up a ten-car test train left plattsburgh, new york, last week headed for b.a.r.t.'s testing facility which is in hayward. a total of 775 new train cars have been ordered and expected to arrive in stages over the next five years. b.a.r.t. says the new cars will feature microplug doors to seal out noise leading to a quieter ride, as well as a third door to make boarding and exiting easier. if you're looking for used car, this could be your year. >> yeah. and airports nationwide say they feel your pain when it comes to long security lines. >> 7 on your side's michael finney is sheer wihere with tod consumer headlines. >> airports around the nation are blaming long lines on the ts

ark. transportation security administration is coming under fire for not being up to the job of moving passengers quickly through security. airports around the nation say although travel is increasing, tsa staffing is lagging behind. so to protect yourself, be ready for long lines as we move into the spring and summer season. signing up for tsa precheck and arriving at the airport early are really the only ways to deal with the delays. airbnb will allow neighbors of rental properties to review guests' behavior. clamping down on people who abuse the service. an online feedback form will allow those living close to rented out properties to comment or complain about noisy party houses or disturbing activity. the new feature will be introduced globally next month. airbnb has been criticized for allowing quiet neighborhoods to be turned into rowdy party zones because of unruly renters. last month, one found a corpse

in his garden after renting his home for the first time. car leasing is hot. a third of all cars rolling out of dealerships have been leased. the numbers have been going up for quite a while now and means there is an opportunity for used car buyers. starting this year, there could be a glut of three-year-old cars being turned in and placed on used car lot. it's estimated an additional 20% more cars this year than last year will be turned in because there are so many good condition cars, prices could go down. there are estimates of price decreases by about 3% to 4%. sweet deal if you're looking for a used car. >> not bad at all. >> that is news we like. thanks, michael. >> sure. >> i need a new car, right? let's talk about the weather forecast. you will not need the windshield wipers on your car. >> maybe we need a car with a sunroof for the next few days? >> that's right. take that top off and enjoy the sun because it is brighter out here, dan and kristen and also breezy. we're headed in toward a warming

trend. let me show you live doppler 7 hd. a big change from this weekend which was foggy as you know. lingering clouds across parts of the bay area right now. we take a look at how much rain we received over the weekend and it was about a half an inch in san jose to just over 3 inches at mt. st. helena. 3.4 to be exact. had 1.73 in san francisco. oakland. livermore, .085. season to date, we are well above normal now in san francisco at 108% of average, more than 20 inches. also running above livermore 105, san jose 104% of normal and santa rosa behind at 98% of average. in case you're going to be at the coast today, just a reminder even though the storm has passed the waves are still pretty big. high surf advisory remains up until 9:00 tonight. watch out for those large breakers and the potential for sneaker waves. temperatures right now in the 50s and the 60s. enjoy that while you can because

it's only going to get warmer. from our lake tahoe camera, this is a beautiful sight over the last several days. the resorts are reporting anywhere between 2 to over 5 feet of snow. warming trend the next few days, warm peaks thursday and friday and spring begins saturday night. if you're keeping tabs, snow pack at 92% of average. a year ago it was 16% of normal. big improvement. tomorrow morning, do look out for patches of fog. could be dense in spots for the commute. then it burns off, warms up quickly. the sun will be out. temperatures will be coming up. tomorrow you don't feel it so much. average high for san jose, 67. tomorrow coming in at 68. the next few days that follow, you'll be in the low to mid 70s. and we'll keep you in the low 70s as we hit the weekend with a little bit of a cool down but not real noticeable. temperatures first thing tomorrow morning, starting out on the cool to chilly side. you will need to bundle up. low to upper 40s. once again, there will be some areas of fogginess. for the afternoon you're looking

at 61 in san francisco. 64 san rafael. san mateo. 68 livermore, concord. santa rosa, napa, 67. a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. one thing you'll notice is it's missing for at least a good part of the week is the rain. it's going to be a dry and warmer forecast with low to mid 70s for your wednesday bumping you up to the mid 70s around the bay and inland for thursday. coastal highs in the 60s. temperatures will start to drop a little bit as spring begins on saturday at 9:30 in the evening but still real mild and then a chance of rain comes in to the north bay on sunday with a chance for everyone on monday. that is not definitive right now but at least we have a possibility of spring rainfall or spring showers in the bay area. kristen and dan? >> all right. sandhya, thanks very much. we appreciate it. here's a question to consider. is there life on mars? >> oh, yeah. >> how a new space mission is about to find out. that's next. and at 5:30 on "world news with david muir" --

europe and russia today launched a joint mission to mars. the mars orbiter will investigate whether there's methane gas on the planet. that could indicate there may be life on mars. a lander will also be dropped

into the red planet or onto the planet, i should say. the satellite lifted off from kazakhstan early this morning. it's not expected to reach the red planet until october. a picture was posted on twitter showing hillary clinton and george w. bush sharing a very sweet moment at nancy reagan's funeral last friday. the bush and clinton families have a long political history. cnn's political director tweeted out the candid shot saying "this may be the best photo from the funeral." protesters held an emotional rally in san francisco in an effort to end the deportation of refugees. protect our children! protect our children! >> abc 7 news at san francisco's financial district where the group protested in front of senator dianne feinstein's office. one protester from el salvador says the violence in his country justifies giving refugee children temporary protective status. >> stay here and not be sent to

more trauma and more violence. >> i.c.e. has said it's committed to, quote, sensible, effective immigration enforcement but focuses on its priorities. as apple is fighting a justice department order to hack open a phone connected to the san bernardino shooting, other tech companies are now boosting their own security. "the guardian" reports facebook is adding an encryption to its voice calls made in its app. its text messages are already encrypted. messenger, snapchat and google are also using more encryption. all the companies have come to the defense of apple which has refused to open the phone saying it would set a dangerous precedent. more people are using their smartphones to ask health-related questions. a new study finds agents like siri come up short on serious issues like mental health. a study by researchers at stanford and uc san francisco tested the top four artificial intelligence assistants and found they couldn't provide
