jason dalton told officers when you plug into the app, you can actually feel the presence on you. dalton also told police he didn't want to come across as a crazy person. he's been ordered to undergo a mental competency exam. a virginia man is being held in iraq after being captured while fighting for isis. commanders of a kurdish group say the 26-year-old was seen in this video acknowledges he had become lost and that he was an american citizen. is he identified as mohamad khweis of alexandria, virginia. it's not clear if he'll be turned over to the u.s. authorities. president obama has spoken to russian president putin over the future of the cease fire in syria. the conversation came after putin ordered almost all russian troops out of syria. the military had conducted a five-month long air campaign to strengthen the assad presidency. syrian peace talks have just gotten under way in geneva.

a riot. trump will have to do battle in florida without one of his top supporters. sarah palin has canceled her campaign events in the sunshine state after her husband was seriously injured in a snowball accident. todd is expected to make a full recovery. look for election results from tonight's primaries all evening along on abc news. coming up, a look at the campaign ads bombarding later in this half hour. this morning disturbing new details about the death of a maryland police officer. it appears jacai colson was shot by another police officer during a gun pat battle. and police say the brothers of the man who opened fire recorded the shoot-out on their cellphones. suspect michael forward allegedly intended to die even recording his last will and testament before the attack. he and his brothers facing multiple charges. officer colson was at the station to visit another officer on his day off.

a former south carolina trooper faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in a racially charged shooting. the videotape where the trooper asked a black driver for his license and shoots him four times. his wallet can be seen flying out of his hands. the driver survived. investigators say the amtrak derailment in rural kansas could have been much worse if not for a quick thinking engineer. the train was traveling about 6735 miles an hour when the engineer noticed something wrong with the track ahead and then pulled the brake. alex perez is at the scene. >> reporter: federal investigators on the ground in kansas, trying to figure out what sent this amtrak train flying off the tracks. >> you the train carrying 145 people is traveling from los angeles to chicago.

then, the engineer notices a significant bend or defect in the track and hits the brakes, following protocol to avoid a bigger disaster. but eight cars still come off. horrified passengers suddenly tossed around inside. >> next thing i know is, i just feel the train lift off the ground and then set back down on the tracks, and then it does it again. it lifts it back up and it slams me into the door. >> set a ladder up and we'll start evacuating some of these people off top. >> reporter: more than 30 passengers taken to the hospital. two with critical injuries, airlifted. and investigators zeroing in on the condition of the track reportedly checking whether an unreported vehicle crash may have damaged the tracks. >> alex perez on the scene in

in north carolina, this trump supporter charged with assault after sucker punching a protester. now trump may pay his legal bills. at times the violence even startling trump himself. grabbing his podium when a protester rushed the stage in dayton, ohio. the secret service jumping into action. trump later tweeting the protester "has ties to isis." turns out that was a hoax. security visibly tighter as top trump supporter sarah palin defended him. >> what we don't have time for is all that petty punk ass little thuggery stuff that's been going on with these, quote unquote, protesters. >> trump's rivals now seizing on the chaos. >> this country's not about us tearing one another down or having fistfights at a campaign rally. that's not what america is. >> isn't it amazing how we can have that conversation without anyone getting violent, anyone insulting anybody?
