legalized marijuana could hit $44 billion by 2020. last year alone, legal pot sales surpassed $5 billion. those are some of our top stories on this tuesday, march 15th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning, everyone. we're going to get started this half hour with another crucial day in the presidential race. there's voting today in five states, florida, north carolina, ohio, illinois and missouri. >> close races are expected between democrats hillary clinton and bernie sanders, the latest poll from ohio shows clinton with a slim lead. abc's cecilia vega begins our coverage. >> reporter: hillary clinton in chicago, turning an attack on donald trump into a campaign rallying cry. >> that people who run for president ought to unite our country, not divide our country. >> reporter: but before trump, bernie sanders, now closing the gap in ohio.

>> a few weeks ago, people were saying, bernie sanders winning ohio? no way. >> reporter: encroaching on clinton's lead. >> we have a good vote tomorrow, people come out, we're going to win here in ohio. >> reporter: a buckeye state loss not enough to block clinton's path to the nomination, but it would be an embarrassing setback. and a reminder of the vermont senator's strength among young voters. and hillary clinton isn't the only one with a lot riding on election day. bernie sanders needs to win states and he needs to win delegates in order to stay in this race, and that is why he is outspending hillary clinton in tv ads in every state except for one heading to the polls. cecilia vega, abc news, chicago. and on the republican side, the races in ohio and florida are seen as really must wins because have you two native son candidates there. it's believed ohio governor john kasich has to come out on top on his state and the same can be said of rubio in florida.

lead in being the target of attack ads. $20 million has been spent on trump since super tuesday. the largest sponsor of these ads in that time period is marco rubio's super pac. with the newest trump attack ads, two come from an anti-trump super pac one within centers around the recent controversy over violence at his events and another focuses on women. one of the other ads from john kasich and another from marco rubio and on the other side of the aisle is bernie sanders making a final push with new digital spots. here's a look at some of these ads that voters are seeing. > donald trump campaign violence. >> like to punch him in the face, knock the crap out of him. >> he's too reckless to be president. >> bimbo. >> dog. >> fat pig. >> real quotes from donald trump about women. >> and by the way, the bernie sanders ad that he put up that he put on web featuring a chicago principal that endorsed him has racked up nearly 3 million views on facebook in

jason dalton told officers when you plug into the app, you can actually feel the presence on you. dalton also told police he didn't want to come across as a crazy person. he's been ordered to undergo a mental competency exam. a virginia man is being held in iraq after being captured while fighting for isis. commanders of a kurdish group say the 26-year-old was seen in this video acknowledges he had become lost and that he was an american citizen. is he identified as mohamad khweis of alexandria, virginia. it's not clear if he'll be turned over to the u.s. authorities. president obama has spoken to russian president putin over the future of the cease fire in syria. the conversation came after putin ordered almost all russian troops out of syria. the military had conducted a five-month long air campaign to strengthen the assad presidency. syrian peace talks have just gotten under way in geneva.

>> many residents of the south will be cleaning up today after a storm system launched torrential rain, tornadoes, flooding in spartanburg last evening. hail, that is actually hail, not snow. it's the largest hail to hit the area in more than 30 years. more on the extreme weather from abc's brandi hitt. >> reporter: from extreme flooding to dangerous tornadoes, the south is getting rocked by severe weather. across texas, streets and highways have turned into rivers. hundreds of homes underwater for miles. the floodwaters here are expected to break records as they continue to rise. >> this is going to slow it all up. >> reporter: families packed up what they could. those who refused to leave are pleading to be rescued. >> we're going to go back in and we're going to keep doing this till we get them out. >> reporter: many now are turning to shelters for help. >> we're told it could be several weeks. >> reporter: across the state in louisiana, at least four people have been killed.

a former south carolina trooper faces up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in a racially charged shooting. the videotape where the trooper asked a black driver for his license and shoots him four times. his wallet can be seen flying out of his hands. the driver survived. investigators say the amtrak derailment in rural kansas could have been much worse if not for a quick thinking engineer. the train was traveling about 6735 miles an hour when the engineer noticed something wrong with the track ahead and then pulled the brake. alex perez is at the scene. >> reporter: federal investigators on the ground in kansas, trying to figure out what sent this amtrak train flying off the tracks. >> you the train carrying 145 people is traveling from los angeles to chicago.

then, the engineer notices a significant bend or defect in the track and hits the brakes, following protocol to avoid a bigger disaster. but eight cars still come off. horrified passengers suddenly tossed around inside. >> next thing i know is, i just feel the train lift off the ground and then set back down on the tracks, and then it does it again. it lifts it back up and it slams me into the door. >> set a ladder up and we'll start evacuating some of these people off top. >> reporter: more than 30 passengers taken to the hospital. two with critical injuries, airlifted. and investigators zeroing in on the condition of the track reportedly checking whether an unreported vehicle crash may have damaged the tracks. >> alex perez on the scene in
