hillary clinton took some big steps toward the democratic nomination last night with victories in florida, ohio, north carolina and illinois. donald trump had the most wins on the republican side, taking illinois, north carolina and florida. trump's win in the sunshine state forced florida senator marco rubio out of the race. ohio governor john kasich was the winner in his home state. that was his first win of the entire campaign. >> that really was a big one because for those who were as opposed to donald trump, kasich's win in ohio was absolutely crucial. his victory means a contested republican convention in cleveland this summer is very much a possibility. >> abc's david wright is covering kasich's campaign and he spent some time with him. david, good morning. >> reporter: hi, reena and kendis, from john kasich headquarters here in ohio. a jubilant mood here. john kasich pulling out a win in his home state. we were with him backstage just before he came out. he was shooting hoops. and pretty much shooting the

moon that he had pulled it off. the polls as late as tuesday showed him neck and neck with trump here. one of the things that may have helped him is the fact that ohio has an open primary. independent voters can choose to vote in the democratic or republican side. we met voters who were democrats who chose to vote in the republican race because they wanted to block donald trump. the fact that kasich has won his home state ensures that he moves forward in this contest. he thinks that his victory is in part to do with his positive campaign. he was refusing even tuesday to take potshots at donald trump. he now is hoping to become the republican standard bearer for the people hoping to block trump and he now moves forward. the next big contest in arizona. kendis, reena? >> thank you so much, david. we're looking ahead next tuesday. arizona, also there's in idaho primaries there -- caucuses

and were among the trendsetters paid bit company hyped the ad blitz, lord & taylor. >> they said we have this dress and we want you to send it to 50 influencers and see how they all style it and promote it. >> they had us all post at the same time between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and then post it tagging lord & taylor. >> reporter: the campaign a huge success. lord & taylor selling out of the dress almost immediately. the photo bomb reaching more than 11 million instagram users in just two days. but regulators are calling into question the retail giant's tactics. >> when consumers are look at posts on instagram, they have no idea and they think, this person whose fashion sense i value really likes this dress and they don't know that it's there because lord & taylor paid the influencer. >> reporter: the ftc now settling charges saying lord & taylor violated federal law claiming the department store giant duped customers by failing to disclose it paid for the posts in exchange for endorsements.

good morning. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." it was a big night for hillary clinton and donald trump. both of them winning multiple state primaries last night. and claiming the most convention delegates. the fallout from those victories already being felt. full details straight ahead. a commuter nightmare in washington, d.c., as the entire metro subway system is closed today for a safety inspection. the sudden shutdown came after an electrical fire on monday which sent smoke pouring into a downtown tunnel. a student from the university of virginia has been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in north korea. otto warmbier had been accused of trying to steal a banner containing a political slogan hanging on the wall of his hotel in the north korean capital.

that storm will continue to howl for some time to come. abc's marci gonzalez is in miami with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and reena. only three candidates now remain in the gop race. donald trump projected to win the biggest contest of the day here in florida. but one loss could complicate his path to the nomination. millions of americans in five states lined up to cast their votes. the front-runners are celebrating big wins. >> this is another super tuesday. >> we're going to go forward and we're going to win. but more importantly, we're going to win for the country. we're going to win, win, win. >> reporter: but the night quickly claimed its first campaign. senator marco rubio losing his home state of florida to donald trump and bowing out. >> while it is not god's plan that i be president in 2016 or maybe ever, the fact that i've even come this far is evidence of how special america truly is. >> reporter: but it wasn't a clean sweep for trump. governor john kasich dealing him a critical loss projected to take his home state of ohio and

all 66 of its delegates. >> i have to thank the people of the great state of ohio. i love you. >> reporter: that win keeping kasich's campaign alive but ted cruz saying overall results show it should be a head-to-head contest between himself and trump. for the democrats, a big night for hillary clinton claiming multiple victories. >> we are moving closer to securing the democratic party nomination and winning this election in november! >> reporter: bernie sanders already in arizona, one of the states to vote next, saying it's not over yet. >> phoenix, are you ready for a political revolution? you have come to the right place. >> reporter: but clinton gaining some serious momentum, some of her projected wins last night were blowouts, especially here in florida. kendis and reena. >> very true. marci, thank you so much. the next states to cast votes in nominating contests are

arizona, utah and idaho. >> but before we move ahead, abc's deputy political director shushannah walshe offers her take on last night's big results. good morning, shush. >> good morning, kendis and reena. it was an exciting mini super tuesday. with it, we are in unchartered waters. one step closer to a contested convention, something we haven't seen since 1976. donald trump may have been dominant, but with john kasich's ohio win, he may not have a traditional route to the nomination since it's still impossible mathematically for kasich to win the nomination but he is a possible roadblock for trump getting that magic number of 1,237 delegates. trump also plowed through marco rubio, ending the candidacy of the florida senator, who was once held up as the great hope of the establishment of republicans. in a cycle where voters wanted anger, he offered inspiration. on the democratic side, it was a good night for hillary clinton. bernie sanders has said he will go all the way to the convention and he has the money to do it.

but clinton is the story coming out of last night. sanders needed a surprise win like he pulled off in michigan last week, but it didn't happen. last night brought some clarity to the race, kendis and reason nashgs but it also promised a long slog. on the gop side, this looks like it could go all the way to the convention floor in cleveland in july. >> that would be fascinating. thank you. we're also analyzing exit polls this morning. they really reveal a lot about how voters are feeling about the candidates. >> abc's lauren lyster has gone through the data and is here -- we're glad you're here joining us to explain. >> i know. i came just to pore through all these numbers. >> you're a numbers gal. >> reena, first we have to start with donald trump, of course. he showed his continued appeal to dissatisfied gop voters. he got the majority of support among those who are angry at the government, who favor banning muslims and who say they're falling behind financially. among non-trump supporters, however, republican exit polls

show six in ten saying they would seriously consider a third-party candidate if trump became the gop's nominee. more than 40% say they definitely would not support trump in november. on the other side of the aisle, 66% of voters give hillary clinton a better chance of defeating donald trump in november. only 30% are feeling the bern in that way when it comes to bernie sanders. in tuesday's contests, more voters find sanders honest and trustworthy. 80% versus 60% for clinton in an area where she has been vulnerable. and different from the gop race, reena and kendis, the majority of democrats in tuesday's primaries would be satisfied if either clinton or sanders was the eventual nominee. >> more satisfaction on the democratic side. >> with either one. >> no doubt, i think bernie sanders feeling a little bit of heartburn after last night's results. >> he's feeling the burn in a different way. >> absolutely. axe's lauren lyster, thank you for being here with us. look for more coverage all

morning long here on abc news. we'll hear more remarks from all the candidates including marco rubio. that's later in this half hour. well, we turn to the growing refugee crisis in europe. urgent meetings are under way to address the issue. >> thousands of men, women and children remain stuck at border crossings are negotiations are under way. abc's molly hunter is at one of those crossings in greece. molly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, reena and kendis. this is where 5 million syrian refugees have come out of that war and thousands are right here. freezing cold, ankle deep mud, ngos say some 12,000 people have been stuck here for weeks. it's a waterlogged tent city that was never supposed to be there. a purgatory between greece and macedonia since macedonia and its balkan neighbors shut their borders. the rain doesn't stop, she says. it's disgusting. the children are suffering badly from the cold.

the way forward blocked by razor wire and macedonian police. behind, back to the aegean sea, is not an option. about 3,000 refugees attempted to go around the fence, krogs a rushing river tuesday. it was chaotic and several people drowned and the macedonians detained and deported about 700. the others we found walking back the three miles to camp earlier today. ambitions of moving on to macedonia crushed. we want a solution, she says. we cannot take it anymore. we want to kill ourselves. this is a disaster. and back to the greek camp they went. this man has been here for three weeks. we are running away from isis, this man says. we are from the town of hasakah. we have doctors and engineers. we are only searching for security and peace. as refugees continue to flood

governor john kasich won in his home state, his first crucial victory of the campaign season. the main consequence of donald trump's victory in florida was that it drove senator marco rubio out of the race. >> abc's ines de la cuetara was there in miami last night as rubio said he had reached the end of his campaign trail. good morning, ines. >> reporter: that's right, guys. it was the end of the road for marco rubio. the florida senator lost his home state to donald trump and announced he was suspending his campaign. >> thank you. >> reporter: he was once dubbed the republican savior but after 11 months of hard work, marco rubio is leaving the race. for rubio, florida was do or die. but on tuesday, he lost to trump here by over ten points. he hit trump repeatedly during his concession speech. >> the politics of resentment against other people will not just leave us a fractured party, they're going to leave us a fractured nation. america needs a vibrant conservative movement but one built on principles and on ideas, not on fear, not on anger, not on preying on

people's frustrations. >> reporter: still the freshman senator tried to remain optimistic. >> while it is not god's plan that i be president in 2016 or maybe ever, and while today my campaign is suspended, the fact that i've even come this far is evidence of how special america truly is. >> reporter: and one thing to note, guys, rubio repeatedly used the term "this year." perhaps a reminder he will only be 48 years old by next cycle. reena, kendis. >> thank you so much, ines. "time" magazine called marco rubio the republican savior at some point. i've said this from the beginning, i think 2018 he could run for governor of florida because, you know, rick scott there has a term limit. and i think he could do well. some people have said he's kind of upset some of the republican establishment over there. can he heal those wounds? we'll have to see. >> he tried to do a little bit of healing last night with his speech.

front runner. >> thanks to rick klein there. let's take a look right now at the all-important delegate count. trump won the largest share of the delegates last night but cruz continues to accrue delegates, as well. meaning trump will have to fight for every delegate through the spring, as rick mentioned. on the democratic side, clinton won about 300 delegates last night, making it all but impossible for sanders to make up the difference before july. our election coverage does not end here. we're going to look at the mood of the voters before last night's primaries and the issues that mattered most. that's later in this half hour. another major headlines this morning. there's been another police shooting, this time in ft. worth, texas. police had tried to stop an suv to serve outstanding warrants. that led to a high-speed chase, a chase on foot and a shootout. the police officer is in critical condition. one of the suspects is dead and the other, his son, is in custody. the city of ferguson, missouri, is accepting a justice department plan to overhaul its police department and courts.

there were cheers when the council voted in favor. the city rejected the plan a month ago. and instead approved a modified version. the justice department sued. the plan is supposed to correct problems found after the michael brown shooting 18 months ago. belgium on high alert overnight after an anti-terror raid linked to the paris attacks. belgian and french police still looking for other suspects after the raid of a home in brussels. one terror suspect was killed. the counter-terrorism operation paralyzed the entire neighborhood putting a school, daycare center and auto plant on lockdown. a suspect killed in the raid was found with an assault rifle in his arms. break news from north korea where an american tourist has been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. otto warmbier had been accused of trying to steal a banner containing a political slogan hanging on the wall of his hotel. a university of virginia student, was seen on video tearful, apologizing for his alleged crime and asking for forgiveness. >> i don't know how washington,

investigators may have the cause for this week's amtrak derailment in kansas. a truck carrying feed for cattle had shifted the tracks at least a foot when it crossed the rail line. there isn't a designated crossing at that spot. investigators found tire marks that matched a nearby feed company's truck. dozens of people were injured when amtrak's super chief derailed. now to a major health headline. the federal government is taking steps to end an epidemic of overdoses from painkillers. the cdc is urging doctors to avoid such medications when treating ailments. the pain killers such as oxycontin, percocet and vicodin are now commonly prescribed to treat back pain and arthritis. >> doctors when they're treating patients with chronic pain should start with aspirin or ibuprofen or nondrug approaches like exercise therapy. for those people who have acute pain after surgery, they can be treated for three days, seven at the most, and then switched to something much safer. >> the cdc estimates there are 40 deaths a day from opioid

key battleground states and bernie sanders showing no signs of stepping aside. abc's liz kreutz is covering the democrats for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis and reena. just after those wins in north carolina, florida and ohio were announced, hillary clinton celebrated here to a fired up crowd here in west palm beach. that win in ohio, though, a turning point in the campaign. overnight hillary clinton riding high after another night of victory. >> this is another super tuesday for our campaign. thank you, florida. thank you, north carolina. thank you, ohio. >> reporter: her staffers partying at their brooklyn headquarters and clinton gloating that she is now more than 300 delegates ahead of bernie sanders. >> we are moving closer to securing the democratic party nomination. >> reporter: the vermont senator, meanwhile, charging on.

up on tuesday. >> yeah, and marci, in the meanti meantime, with no clean sweep for trump, what's next for his campaign? >> reporter: yeah, well, they're feeling very confident, saying they're going to win, win, win every race here on out. a lot of confidence looking ahead to those next big races again on tuesday. especially arizona. >> and i guess the race really is getting more dynamic in many ways. isn't it, marci? >> reporter: yeah, it absolutely is. with marco rubio dropping out, it is now a three-man race. and it's giving trump that extra surge, that extra momentum as if he really needed any more. but ted cruz, who has the second most delegates, he still insists that he can beat trump, especially in a head-to-head match-up. but it certainly won't be easy. by abc's estimates, cruz would need to get 76% of the remaining delegates to win the nomination. trump would still need 55% of the remaining delegates. kendis and reena?

>> abc's marci gonzales live in miami. marci, thank you so much. >> yes, basically means at the end of the day, marci, you're not going to get to stay in miami for too long. you have to go to cleveland where this will end up. there will be much more election coverage coming up all morning long. we're going to hear more from the john kasich campaign after a big victory. that's later this half hour. turning to another major headline, a ft. worth, texas, police officer is in critical condition after being shot. it happened after a police chase turned violent. officers had tried to serve warrants when the suspects took off in their suv. they abandoned the car and began shooting at police. one of the suspects was killed. his son is in custody. two maryland men who taped their brother shooting at a police station are due in court today. malik and elijah ford are both charged with six counts of attempted murder and other serious charges. a detective was killed by what police said was friendly fire while in a shootout with 22-year-old michael ford. he was shot in the gunfire and is still in the hospital.

an intense round of the blame game. on capitol hill during a hearing on the water crisis in flint, michigan, former state and federal officials blamed each other and democratic lawmakers pointed fingers at the state's republican governor. abc's bazi kanani has all the details. >> reporter: flint's former officials in the hot seat asked to explain their actions and inaction after an expert's memo warning the city's water was unsafe months before taking aggressive action. lawmakers replayed this video of the former mayor on local tv. >> it's your standard tap water. >> we know now that we were getting bad information and, worse, water. >> reporter: former mayor dayne walling blamed the state's environmental regulatory agency for reports that claimed the water was okay for consumption. flint's former state-appointed emergency manager pointed fingers at city officials. >> i made no decision about the use of the flint river. >> reporter: the region's former

a quick-thinking police officer moves the driver out of the way. and then seconds later, seconds later, boom. the van is demolished by the speeding train. >> lucky guy. he's going to be late for his next appointment. three southern california police officers are in trouble with the law. they're accused of stealing snacks during a raid on a medical marijuana dispensary last year. their alleged poor behavior was caught on surveillance cameras. prosecutors say the cops did not eat any of the edible marijuana items during the raid but the dispensary disagrees. >> because some were consuming regular food products does not mean that they weren't consuming edibles. >> okay. well, one of the three cops is also charged with vandalism for smashing security cameras, but there were four hidden security cameras as well. the three officers are currently on paid administrative leave. sales were down at chipotle last month by about 25% following a series of food safety issues. the company says it expects to post a loss for the first quarter. what would mark the first such loss since it went public in 2006. sales last month had started to

hillary clinton took some big steps toward the democratic nomination last night with victories in florida, ohio, north carolina and illinois. donald trump had the most wins on the republican side, taking illinois, north carolina and florida. trump's win in the sunshine state forced florida senator marco rubio out of the race. ohio governor john kasich was the winner in his home state. that was his first win of the entire campaign. >> that really was a big one because for those who were as opposed to donald trump, kasich's win in ohio was absolutely crucial. his victory means a contested republican convention in cleveland this summer is very much a possibility. >> abc's david wright is covering kasich's campaign and he spent some time with him. david, good morning. >> reporter: hi, reena and kendis, from john kasich headquarters here in ohio. a jubilant mood here. john kasich pulling out a win in his home state. we were with him backstage just before he came out. he was shooting hoops. and pretty much shooting the
