stealing a car. and you see this. he led officers on a chase over busy freeways and streets. at one point the vehicle heading the wrong way. he jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the sherman oaks galleria shopping center. officers chased him on foot, eventually arresting him in the mall. now to another kind of crime. but this one a lot more discreetly committed. identity theft. >> a new warning about how thieves can rob your account with a simple phone call. abc's rebecca jarvis has the details. >> thank you for calling. >> i would like to update my current telephone number. >> sure, we can definitely update your phone number. >> reporter: you're listening to a modern day bank robbery. that caller, authorities say, is really a thief using stolen bank account information. >> yes, i'd like to order some checks. >> reporter: ordering checks so he can get money from a stranger's account. and you may not believe his accomplice. prosecutors say he got that stolen info from a bank teller. >> and what transactions did you want to go over, sir? >> reporter: it's not just one account. he calls to access several.

>> i would like to know how much i have available in my accounts, please. >> you have $14,327.13. >> bank tellers have access to very confidential data. >> reporter: cyrus vance, manhattan's top attorney, says bad tellers are often part of larger identity theft rings. >> they're selling that to individuals on the outside who will then take that information, turn it into credit cards or checks. >> reporter: and he says he's seen an alarming increase in these crimes, even estimating he prosecutes a case once a month. should people around the country be worried? >> i think we should all be worried. that doesn't mean we should all panic. >> reporter: this woman didn't want us to show her face because she says she continues to have her identity stolen after she became a victim. >> nobody knew that this was happening. >> reporter: she says thousands of dollars from her account stolen just weeks before the biggest day of her life. >> we had been working for about a year to save up a lot of cash to pay for our entire wedding and it was gone.

>> reporter: she says she had no idea a bank teller had stolen her identity, along with 28 other customers, can until she received this letter from her bank. chase told her a former employee may have accessed your account information without authorization and gave it to someone outside of chase. chase says as soon as we discovered this, we immediately called the authorities, fired the employee and reimbursed the customers. we're sorry and angry this happened. but vance says not all banks aggressively fight and report these crimes. do you think the banks need to be doing more? >> i think some banks need to be doing more. if it's not reported to law enforcement, it's just an invitation for that criminal to keep the money and go onto the next account or the next bank. >> reporter: rebecca jarvis, abc news, new york. >> and rebecca also tells us that the american bankers association tells abc news that banks use safeguards to prevent

>> reporter: talent agency rebel entertainment partners filed a lawsuit monday suing cbs television, claiming the media giant failed to pay the millions in profits and saying the show is now losing money because. judge's $47 million annual salary. >> where's the money? >> $47 million is quite high for a salary. and leaves nothing for any of the people that were supposed to receive profits from the show. >> reporter: the lawsuit claims rebel entertainment is entitled to 5% of the show's net profits, but says they haven't received a dime since february 2010, when the judge's salary nearly doubled. that money allegedly coming out of the production budget. >> it's just an egregious violation of the contract and shouldn't be allowed and won't be allowed. >> reporter: rebel entertainment also accuses cbs of not consulting with them when the legal star began producing the spinoff show "hot bench," something they say cbs was

good morning. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." president obama's supreme court pick, judge merrick garland, meets today with democratic senators. he's facing an uphill battle to be confirmed because of senators on the other side of the aisle. of course. and full details straight ahead. donald trump is warning his supporters may riot at the gop convention this summer if he's denied his party's nomination. when trump withdrew from a debate that was scheduled for next monday, he was quickly followed by john kasich. that event has been cancelled. the woman shown on videotape having sex with hulk hogan testified she didn't know their encounter was even being taped. she also said she was very upset her then-husband had recorded the encounter. hogan is suing gawker for

posting the video. and carmakers have agreed to make auto braking standard on cars and midsize suvs by 2022, as well as on large suvs and pickups by 2025. that could cut the rate of rear-impact collisions by 40%. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, march 17th, st. patrick's day. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good thursday morning, everyone. let's start this half hour with the big fight over president obama's pick for the supreme court. >> merrick garland visits today with democratic senators who are demanding his nomination move forward. but republicans seemed determined to stop that from happening. abc's bazi kanani with the details. >> reporter: the president picks a nominee with a long history of bipartisan support. >> today i am nominating chief judge merrick brian garland to join the supreme court. >> reporter: the announcement emotional for the federal

appellate judge, speaking with his family nearby. >> this is the greatest honor of my life, other than lynn agreeing to marry me 28 years ago. >> reporter: at 63, merrick garland is one of the oldest nominees ever. he's the chief judge of the u.s. court of appeals in washington. before that, a top federal prosecutor. back in 1995, garland led the prosecution of oklahoma city bomber timothy mcveigh. he also prosecuted the unabomber. president obama called on republicans to give his well-qualified nominee hearings and a vote. >> it's supposed to be above politics. it has to be. >> reporter: but republican leaders insist voters should decide the idea logical balance of the court when they elect the next president. >> it is a president's constitutional right to nominate a supreme court justice and it is the senate's constitutional right to act as a check on a president and withhold its consent. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell accepted

a phone call from judge garland, but refused to meet with him on capitol hill thursday. mcconnell said since garland will not be confirmed, a meeting would be perfunctory. senate judiciary committee chair chuck grassley has agreed to meet with garland, but has not agreed to hold hearings. reena, kendis. >> bazi, thank you in capitol hill. tuesday's republican primary results have brought about some shifting political allegiances. earlier in the campaign, south carolina governor nikki haley endorsed senator marco rubio. well, now that rubio is out of the race, she was asked who is she backing. haley said that her prayer is that ted cruz comes out ahead of donald trump. she also stopped short of offering cruz a full endorsement. and hillary clinton's use of a private e-mail server is still an issue, of course, in this campaign. new documents reveal that when she was secretary of state, clinton asked for a secure government smartphone. that request was denied by the national security agency.

a month later clinton started using the private server. the clinton campaign refused comment on this latest revelation. the country's second busiest subway system set to reopen in just hours after an unprecedented shoutdown. >> we're talking about washington, d.c.'s metro closed for inspections, making a mess for many commuters. lauren lyster has been tracking the overnight developments. good morning. >> officials say the inspection is complete and the metro is set to reopen at 5:00 a.m. with all that damage fixed by then. so just in time for the morning commute. the fear was a systemic mechanical failure after a fire on the tracks monday. the fire was eerily similar to one last year that killed someone. it caused officials to shut down the entire system for crews to inspect the third rail cables on all 100 miles of track. here is what they found. there are three cables damaged to this degree.

look at that. they called them showstoppers. and they also found more than two dozen damaged areas in total. officials wednesday night were standing by the closure. >> we are aware of the inconvenience that was caused by closing down the system for the 29 hours. but we still believe today that we made the correct decision because of safety. >> investigators are now reviewing the history of the damaged cables and the findings will be shared with federal agencies to identify any procedures that weren't followed, or reena and kendis, any standards that weren't met. >> really surprised they were able to get it all done in 29 hours. you know, the subway system we're all familiar with it, they're often spending the weekends shutdown because of repairs. but they feel confident they'll be able to reopen at 5:00 a.m.? >> you have it out for d.c. -- pointing all out of those flaws. >> you can't get one over on her. >> the thousands of daily commuters in d.c. know very well how tough that system can be. >> 700,000 rides a day on the

subway system. the second busiest in the country. 100 miles of track that these crews went through today inspecting. so, hey, that was pretty efficient, if you ask me in my view. >> okay. we'll see how it works. >> trying to balance it out. >> we'll see how it works in the morning. >> lauren lyster, thank you so much. >> thank you. surgeries at an arkansas hospital, in the meantime, were temporarily halted after tests showed possible contamination of surgical implements. the test found a rare degenerative brain disorder that can cause dementia and death but officials say it is extremely unlikely any other patients were impacted. the cdc says the last transmission of disease through surgical implements was in 1976. and with spring just days away, severe weather of all forms hitting the nation. last night, this beautiful site here. as the 6:00 local news was going off the air here in new york, a bolt of lightning hit 1 world

rebecca montano then handed the baby to a customer as she rushed to help the mother who was having a seizure at the time. the woman is fine now and so is the baby, thanks mostly to montano's quick action. some are calling her a hero, but the grandmother says she was just trying to do good. >> the kindness of strangers. >> i'd say she -- good heads-up work knowing that something was happening. > wow. well, turning to dramatic video surfacing at trial showing a hijacked helicopter airlifting two prison inmates to freedom. >> the wild attempt did not go according to plan. and abc's linsey davis has their story. >> reporter: it was a brazen made for the movies prison break that turned into a comedy of errors. two inmates in quebec struggling to climb to a hijacked helicopter and gain freedom. one almost makes it to the top, even get a hand from a partner in crime, only to dpaul. one minute later, the chopper tries taking off but fails. all the while, unarmed guards are watching and recording the spectacle.

>> reporter: judge merrick garland, standing quietly at the president's side, then stepping forward. the emotion of the moment overwhelming him. >> this is the greatest honor of my life, other than lynn agreeing to marry me 28 years ago. >> reporter: his family there watching, minus daughter becky. >> i also wish that we hadn't taught my older daughter to be so adventurous that she would be hiking in the mountains out of cell service range when the president called. >> reporter: for decades, merrick garland has been a prominent figure in american law. 63 years old, he's one of the oldest nominees ever. he is chief judge of the u.s. court of appeals in washington, where he served for 18 years, and before that, a top federal prosecutor. >> associate deputy attorney general merrick garland. >> reporter: garland was there in oklahoma city in 1995, as seen here in a video released by the white house, leading the prosecution of timothy mcveigh, a death penalty case.

he carried the names of the victims with him everywhere he went while prosecuting that case. >> we promised that we would find the perpetrators, that we would bring them to justice, and that we would do it in a way that honored the constitution. >> reporter: he also led the prosecution of the unabomber. as a judge, garland is known as a moderate on the appeals court though he would tip the balance of the supreme court by replacing staunch conservative antonin scalia. in choosing merrick garland as his nominee, the president has selected someone who in any normal time with his endorsements over the year from both sides of the political aisle and his moderate record, would be easily confirmable, but this is not a normal political time. terry moran, abc news, the supreme court. >> well, it didn't take long for the political backlash against garland's nomination to start. senate republicans have said since the death of antonin scalia, that the next president should pick someone to replace him. majority leader mitch mcconnell

made that position clear in a senate floor speech. >> it's the senate's constitutional right to act as a check on a president and withhold its consent. >> at least six of mcconnell's republican colleagues including judiciary committee chairman chuck grassley, say they're open to meeting with garland. presidential candidate ted cruz is not one of them. in a statement about garland, cruz said he would undermine second amendment gun rights and legalize late-term abortions. let's talk about the republican presidential hopefuls. donald trump, ted cruz and john kasich who are now actually focusing on next tuesday's primaries in arizona and utah. they were supposed to debate in utah on monday. but when trump withdrew, followed quickly by kasich, the event was canceled. trump says given his big delegate lead, republicans should be rallying around him. he's warning about the consequences if the republican establishment tries to block his nomination. >> i think you'd have riots. i think you'd have riots. i'm representing a tremendous,

many, many millions of people. i think you would have problems like you've never seen before. i think i think bad things would happen. i really do. i believe that. i wouldn't lead it but i think bad things would happen. >> well, that said, house speaker paul ryan quickly took himself out of consideration for the gop nomination in the event of a contested convention. a small group of conservatives who are opposed to trump are meeting today to discuss a possible third party option. and in the democratic battle, not only are their primaries in arizona and utah next tuesday, there is a caucus in idaho. hillary clinton's campaign is expressing confidence describing her delegate lead over bernie sanders as unsurmountable. abc's cecilia vega with more. >> reporter: the democratic nomination now within arm's reach, and hillary clinton is focusing her fire on donald trump. >> we should be breaking down barriers, not building walls. >> reporter: trump firing off too saying clinton doesn't have the strength or energy to be president, recycling an attack line that's become one of his favorites.

ask bernie sanders to drop out of this race, even if his prolonged presence ends up hurting her in this campaign. she said, quote, i will never ask anybody to step out. cecilia vega, abc news, new york. a sudden passing overnight. music fans mourning the death of singer frank sinatra jr. his family says he died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest while on tour in daytona beach, florida. sinatra followed his famous father's footsteps into music as a teenager, eventually working for his dad as his musical director and conductor. he was 72 years old. also in florida, the woman shown having sex with hulk hogan has testified in his lawsuit against gawker. heather cole told the st. petersburg courtroom she didn't know the encounter was being taped. she was very upset her then-husband had recorded it. >> i felt embarrassed. >> why was that?

the blaze filled the sky with plumes of smoke. the u.s. coast guard towed the yacht to a remote location. no injuries were reported and authorities are still trying to determine what caused that fire. the yacht reportedly sold for more than $2 million in 2014. guessing it's worth a lot less now. >> probably right. well, heartbreak in massachusetts as a state trooper is killed during a traffic stop. thomas clardy was handling a track violation when his cruiser was hit by another vehicle. he was a state trooper for 11 years. other officers and first responders lined the streets to pay respect to the former marine. clardy was 44 years old and leaves behind a wife and six children. now to one of the busiest subway systems in the country. it is set to reopen in just a few hours. washington, d.c.'s metro which we're both familiar with. >> i love it. >> i don't. was shut down for the entire day for emergency inspections. >> the action taken almost immediately after a fire on the tracks earlier this week. abc's lauren lyster joins us now

with new developments. >> good morning. i too am familiar with the d.c. metro system. this is believed to be an unprecedented shutdown of what is the country's second busiest rail system. 700,000 rides a day are taken on d.c.'s metro, but wednesday that number falling to zero. >> reporter: commuter train transportation in washington, d.c., grinding to a halt wednesday. for more than 24 hours, all 91 metro rail stations in and around the nation's capital closed. >> i thought it was a hoax. like, really? >> reporter: after a fire on the tracks monday, fear of a systematic mcal failure, causing officials to shut down the entire system and spend wednesday checking 600 electrical connections over 100 miles of underground tracks. crews discovering these fraying jumper cables. >> as bad as that looks, these do not indicate they're imminent for fire, but clearly this is a hazardous condition that we

cannot accept. >> reporter: inspectors finding three cables damaged to that degree. they call them showstoppers. and they found more than two dozen areas damaged in total. despite the inconvenience, some commuters expressing support. >> probably a good decision but it definitely ruined a lot of people's commute this morning. >> after the disasters and loss of life in the last year, i think this was a really smart thing to do. >> reporter: monday's fire had eerie similarities to a metro fire last year that left one person dead. so, despite traffic moving slowly wednesday morning and row afro of train cars sitting in the yard, officials standing by their choice. >> we are aware of the inconvenience that was caused, but we still believe today that we made the correct decision. >> inspections are complete and the metro is set to reopen at 5:00 a.m. with all that damage fixed. so, reena and kendis, just in time for the morning commute. >> tough day for commuterers. but there was an upside for businesses?

you know, we have -- i'm representing a tremendous, many, many millions of people. i think you would have problems like you've never seen before. i think bad things would happen. i really do. i believe that. i wouldn't lead it, but i think bad things would happen. >> reporter: trump's words coming with these images still fresh in american minds. anger and violence at his campaign rallies. trump now saying it's time for, quote, a natural healing process. >> we have a great opportunity, and the people that are voting are democrats are coming in, independents are coming in, and very, very importantly, people that never voted before. it's an incredible thing. >> reporter: florida governor rick scott falling in line, endorsing trump, telling other republicans to accept and respect the will of the voters. but ohio governor john kasich, fresh off a big victory in his home state, now vowing to fight all the way to the convention floor, but with a positive message. >> i want to remind you again tonight that i will not take the low road to the highest office

in the land. >> reporter: one place we won't see the candidates clash -- a debate stage. trump pulling out of monday's showdown on fox. kasich then dropping out, too. >> i think we've had enough. how many times county same people ask you the same question? >> reporter: senator ted cruz, who thrives on debates, mocking trump as ducking donald. with senator marco rubio now out of the race, establishment leaders have thrown around the name of house speaker paul ryan. but speaker ryan said that if you want to be president, you should run for president, and there is no situation this year in which he will be the party's nominee, including at the convention in cleveland. tom llamas, abc news, coral gables, florida. five north carolina deputies suspended for their actions at a trump rally. the deputies had been escorting a protester from the event when video shows him being lit. investigators said the deputies had their eyes on the stairs when the man was hit. the suspect has been charged

with assault and disorderly conduct. in the democratic campaign battle, hillary clinton gets back to fund-raising today with events in georgia and tennessee. after this week's primary victories, clinton is increasingly turning her attention to a potential general election showdown against donald trump. clinton now has nearly two-thirds of the convention delegates needed to claim the democratic nomination. despite her advantage, bernie sanders isn't going away. he has a rally scheduled tonight in flagstaff, arizona. democrats in that state, along with utah and idaho, hold their nominating contests next tuesday. and sanders needs to win every remaining primary state by nearly 40 points in order to clinch the nomination. so you're saying there's a chance. even so, he says he intends to stay in the race until the democratic convention. president obama's nominee for the supreme court will get a warm reception on capitol hill today as he meets with

democratic senators. 63-year-old merrick garland was introduced by the president yesterday. he's the chief judge of the u.s. court of appeals in washington. garland faces an uphill fight to be confirmed because senate republicans say the next president should fill the vacancy on the court. soon after naming garland, the president challenged the republican position. >> it's supposed to be above politics. it has to be. and it should stay that way. >> senate majority leader mitch mcconnell has spoken with garland on the phone. mcconnell says there will be no confirmation hearing for garland scheduled. at least six other republican senators say they are open to meeting with garland in the coming weeks. >> the michigan uber driver accused of killing six people is now suing uber. in the handwritten lawsuit, jason dalton accuses uber of ripping him off and failing to pay back wages. he's suing for $10 million. according to police, he said a devil figure on uber's app was controlling him when he allegedly killed the six people. uber responded saying, it's hard to know how to respond to someone who refuses to take

responsibility for his own actions. and this case in d.c. just keeps getting weirder by the day. disturbing new details about the death of a police detective in maryland. the officer was deliberately shot by a fellow officer during a chaotic scene at the police station. abc's pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: the tragic death of detective jacai colson has shaken the prince george's county police department to its core. the fears that a fellow officer was responsible were confirmed. police say one of colson's colleagues shot him because he perceived a threat, apparently thinking colson was one of the suspects. >> the shot that struck and killed detective colson was deliberately aimed at him by another police officer. there's no intention, as i've seen the facts, to indicate any malice. >> reporter: colson, in plain clothes and an unmarked car, was killed during an exchange of

stealing a car. and you see this. he led officers on a chase over busy freeways and streets. at one point the vehicle heading the wrong way. he jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the sherman oaks galleria shopping center. officers chased him on foot, eventually arresting him in the mall. now to another kind of crime. but this one a lot more discreetly committed. identity theft. >> a new warning about how thieves can rob your account with a simple phone call. abc's rebecca jarvis has the details. >> thank you for calling. >> i would like to update my current telephone number. >> sure, we can definitely update your phone number. >> reporter: you're listening to a modern day bank robbery. that caller, authorities say, is really a thief using stolen bank account information. >> yes, i'd like to order some checks. >> reporter: ordering checks so he can get money from a stranger's account. and you may not believe his accomplice. prosecutors say he got that stolen info from a bank teller. >> and what transactions did you want to go over, sir? >> reporter: it's not just one account. he calls to access several.

>> i would like to know how much i have available in my accounts, please. >> you have $14,327.13. >> bank tellers have access to very confidential data. >> reporter: cyrus vance, manhattan's top attorney, says bad tellers are often part of larger identity theft rings. >> they're selling that to individuals on the outside who will then take that information, turn it into credit cards or checks. >> reporter: and he says he's seen an alarming increase in these crimes, even estimating he prosecutes a case once a month. should people around the country be worried? >> i think we should all be worried. that doesn't mean we should all panic. >> reporter: this woman didn't want us to show her face because she says she continues to have her identity stolen after she became a victim. >> nobody knew that this was happening. >> reporter: she says thousands of dollars from her account stolen just weeks before the biggest day of her life. >> we had been working for about a year to save up a lot of cash to pay for our entire wedding

and it was gone. >> reporter: she says she had no idea a bank teller had stolen her identity, along with 28 other customers, can until she received this letter from her bank. chase told her a former employee may have accessed your account information without authorization and gave it to someone outside of chase. chase says as soon as we discovered this, we immediately called the authorities, fired the employee and reimbursed the customers. we're sorry and angry this happened. but vance says not all banks aggressively fight and report these crimes. do you think the banks need to be doing more? >> i think some banks need to be doing more. if it's not reported to law enforcement, it's just an invitation for that criminal to keep the money and go onto the next account or the next bank. >> reporter: rebecca jarvis, abc news, new york. >> and rebecca also tells us that the american bankers association tells abc news that banks use safeguards to prevent

>> reporter: finds herself in the middle of a courtroom drama, a multimillion dollar lawsuit. >> please. >> reporter: talent agency rebel entertainment partners filed a lawsuit monday suing cbs television, claiming the media giant failed to pay the millions in profits and saying the show is now losing money because. judge's $47 million annual salary. >> where's the money? >> $47 million is quite high for a salary. and leaves nothing for any of the people that were supposed to receive profits from the show. >> reporter: the lawsuit claims rebel entertainment is entitled to 5% of the show's net profits, but says they haven't received a dime since february 2010, when the judge's salary nearly doubled. that money allegedly coming out of the production budget. >> it's just an egregious violation of the contract and shouldn't be allowed and won't be allowed. >> reporter: rebel entertainment also accuses cbs of not consulting with them when the legal star began producing the spinoff show "hot bench," something they say cbs was obligated to discuss with them.
