mattress pad and remains confident it was not the cause of the death. we are disappointed with the verdict of the jury and are considering all options, including an appeal. and the family has started a petition to make the mattresses safer. we'll post a link tonight on abc7news.com. a suspected child molester is dead, shot and killed today by authorities following a 12-hour standoff. it began just before 10:00 last night when deputies tried to serve a warrant in byron. the 49-year-old suspect refused to give up, then barricaded himself inside the home with his family. they eventually got out. authorities say this man was wanted on three counts of child molestation. san mateo police are looking for a man they say groped a 17-year-old girl on tuesday on a bus. detectives released this image of the suspect today.

he's described as hispanic, 50 years old, with gray hair and glasses. san francisco police are investigating an incident between a dog owner and a safeway security guard that ended with the dog's death. it happened wednesday at the safeway. that's where vic lee is live with the story you'll only see on abc 7. >> reporter: the dog owner has indeed filed a police report, and that will ultimately lead to an investigation by animal control officers. the management here declined to go on camera, but they did tell us they are looking into this matter. in the meantime, as you can imagine, the dog owner is grieving. 12-year-old roscoe, he was this man's best friend. early morning wednesday, they went into this safeway before starting their day. >> i'm just trying to get some milk for my coffee, and when i

walk in, there's a scuffle. >> reporter: a scuffle between a security guard and a young man accused of shoplifting. he began recording it on his phone. suddenly he became the victim. >> takes a beeline to me and slaps my phone out of my hand because i have it pointed at him. >> reporter: he said he and the guard exchanged words and the guard punched him. >> reporter: >> he tagged me in the ear twice. >> reporter: he then kicks the dog. >> he kicks my dog like he was trying to win the super bowl. roscoe took off. i ran after him as fast as i could. >> reporter: he lost his trail. two hours later, roscoe was found in the hait. >> he ran out into traffic and got hit.

new steps the university is taking to address sexual harassment and violence. among the new actions detailed in a two-page letter, mandatory sexual harassment training next week for all top officials and a new peer review committee. she said we must and we will do a better job of investigating all claims of sexual harassment or sexual violence thoroughly and fairly. meanwhile, this week cal favored in the ncaa tournament but suffered an upset. eric thomas has more. >> reporter: having a solid college basketball season, as you mentioned, a number four seed, playing hawaii today, the last thing you need is to lose a popular assistant coach to

sexual harassment allegations. it was busy and loud at the bar here today while cal fans watched their bears duel it out with hawaii. but in the back of their minds, students were thinking about another blot on the uc system's good name. the assistant coach fired for allegedly sexually harassing is reporter. >> it's not a good look for cal. >> reporter: he's denying any wrongdoing, but he's in the alone. last week, the dean of the law school resigned amid allegations that he had sexually assaulted his executive assistant for months in 2014 and 2015. >> so my team has found about 185 planets. >> reporter: last october, jeffrey marcie resigned following allegations that he had sexually harassed and groped students for a decade. >> time and time and time again,

been found to have done very little or nothing to address adequately the instances of sexual violence on the campus. >> it's crazy, and it's humiliating for the school, because it's not what we're really like. >> reporter: we reached out to officials for an interview but they decline. still, president janet napolitano is waiting for a commission she appointed to come up with recommendations to reduce sexual harassment on campus by april. eric thomas, "abc7 news." we are learning new details about six uc santa cruz students arrested for running an ecstasy ring. five students were in court today to be arraigned. prosecutors say they need more time before filing charges. they say investigators are still downloading huge amounts of

information from the student's computers and cell phones seized in a police raid march 4. agents also intercepted ecstasy pills mailed from overseas. big news for crab fishermen. the season will open one week from tomorrow. test results show the acid levels don't pose a significant health risk. the season has been delayed since november. officials estimate the delay has cost the state's economy up to $90 million. fishing areas remain closed north of those areas. still ahead tonight, the growing concerns over the risk of cars being hacked, maybe one of yours. and the new warning from the fbi. > plus, on the road to the grand prize. meet the students creating tomorrow's technology today.

this is "abc7 news." the pink saturday event celebrated each year during pride week is likely going away. the event takes place on castro street and it's in need of a sponsor. "abc7 news" reporter lyanne melendez is live with more. >> reporter: can you imagine the castro without pink saturday? a few people are beginning to wrap their heads around it. businesses say it will hurt them, so now the search is on for a super hero who can manage this super event.

pink saturday started in 1995 as the party leading up to the pride parade. like many city events, it grew from a few hundred to several thousand. two years ago, the sisters who mangled it stepped down. >> how do we have an event like that and ensure safety for the participants and our volunteers? >> reporter: in 2010, a 19-year-old high school student was fatally shot. there have been other acts of violence, including two beatings in 2014. the cost to putting this together was close to $80,000. much of that went to security and the nonprofits who worked at the event. last year, at the 11th hour, the lbgt community center stepped in to manage it. the name was changed to pink party. but its director said today that was a one-time deal. >> the work we do is huge, and with low income folks, we just didn't feel it was something we

had the capacity to do on top of our other important work this year. >> reporter: this is supervisor scott weiner's district. he said it may be impossible to find anyone willing and capable of managing it. >> right now there's no community group that has stepped up to put together this very large and complicated event. >> reporter: people may decide to show up, but there will be no street closures like in previous years. >> sometimes you have to look at something and re-evaluate it and is it still serving our community? >> reporter: pride weekend is june 25th through the 26th. in san francisco, lyanne melend melendez, "abc7 news." another nightmare commute for b.a.r.t. riders. they still haven't found the cause of an electrical surge. it was testing train there is today. riders are having to take a bus bridge to the north concord

station. the problem has shorted out 50 cars, so b.a.r.t. is using shorter trains. >> it really makes your day bad and it makes your whole week bad and more tired and stressed than you have to be. >> kind of sums it up. b.a.r.t. fears the delays could last months. it has begun taking parts from eight broken trains to fix the other 40 cars. we've been asking riders to share their thoughts. this is what some of you had to say. dear b.a.r.t., hopefully you get the funding you need to upgrade the system. a lot of people appreciate you, including myself. and jenny says, b.a.r.t. should lower fares until all trains are up and running. they're causing people to be late to work. and richard says, what difference does it make? as soon as it's fixed, nothing changes. that you can for your comments.

interested in other careers. now the results are in. chris nguyen has their story. >> reporter: inside this union city classroom, future scientists, engineers and mathematicians assemble. >> this class is making a difference in the world and we're opening people's eyes to different things. >> reporter: last fall, students at james logan high school designed what they say is the first student built charging station. >> it is renewable and sustainable. >> reporter: although electric vehicles don't create emissions, the electricity used is primarily derived from fossil fuel. >> all the wiring, very complex principles. >> reporter: sensing an educational opportunity, he entered the contest, encouraging students to illustrate the power of stem.
