it's saturday, march 19th. good morning and thank you for joining us. we're off to a mild start across the bay area. here's lisa argen with a live look at doppler radar 7 hd. >> we do have some mist and drizzle but are holding off the rain for the second half of your weekend. it's going to come from the gulf of alaska. a couple of systems rotating through. because it's coming from the north and west, it's not going to have a lot of moisture associated with it. we will add to our snowpack, though. a glimpse. sierra nevada, lake tahoe. temperatures in the bay area are in the low to mid-50s with a south wind so it is pretty mild to start. even in the afternoon with the cloud cover will be mild as well with temperatures ranging just about average downtown. low 60s for you around the bay, 65 in oakland, upper 60s down towards san jose and morgan

hill. so we have two systems to time out, one tomorrow and one monday. that's coming up. chris. >> lisa, thank you. developing news overseas, new details about the airliner that crashed in southern russia killing all 62 people on board. investigators now say both of the flight recorders have been recovered. the boeing 737 was coming from dubai. take a look at this new video just into the newsroom showing the debris at the crash site. surveillance video captured what is believed to be the moment the crash happened as the plane burst into framlames. there's no official cause but investigators say one likely factor was a strong wind gusting to near hurricane level. officials say the plane crashed about 800 feet short of the runway. back home in the bay area, the search is on for a groper. peninsula police say a man inappropriately touched a young girl onpourboard a public bus. tiffany wilson has the story from san mateo. >> reporter: take a good look at this man. he's accused of inappropriately

touching a 17-year-old girl shortly after 11:00 a.m. tuesday. police say he boarded the bus at first and south b then sat down next to her. >> he touched her leg, put his arm around her several times and even touched her face. >> reporter: sergeant rick decker said the victim repeatedly told the suspect to stop. he did not. >> at one point he appeared to put his hand under her shift, which she resisted. >> reporter: the harassment continued until the suspect got off the bus near the hillsdale shopping center. no one on the bus was away. riders are disgusted by the suspect's alleged actions. >> it's crazy. i think it's crazy. >> it's not okay to invade someone's space. >> reporter: athena vazquez is 17 years old, the same age as the victim. >> i've had a few men give me certain looks, but i've never had anyone come at me. >> reporter: police are encouraging parents to talk to their children about what to do is a stranger makes them uncomfortable. vasquez says she already has a

plan. >> say no, get the attention of someone close to you, make it known. >> reporter: and now that she knows this man's face -- >> will you be on the lookout now? >> most definitely. >> reporter: police hope all riders will do the same. in mateo, tiffany wilson. caltrans shut down part of highway 101 in burlingame to demolish appear overpass. tomorrow morning from 1:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. all southbound lanes between millbrae and broadway will be closed. one lane headed north will also be blocked off. travel that used to travel on the overpass will be directed to a bridge this weekend. a fix for b.a.r.t. could take months. there will be no train service between the bay point and north concord stations until at least monday. they are trying to figure out what's behind a mysterious power surge that's damaging trains. kay

katie marzullo has the story. >> it's not an inconvenience at all. i enjoy riding b.a.r.t. things happen. >> it's killing my sleep. that's about it. other than that, you have to deal with it. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. riders have been dealing with it for days. >> you get stuck in a lot of traffic because everybody is doing the same thing, so it adds at least another half an hour on your commute. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. is trying to diagnose what's causing a voltage spike on the tracks. the initial surge on wednesday damaged 50 cars and forced the closure of the tracks between north concord and pittsburg/bay point. an industry expert is testing the tracks. >> he's a specialist in terms of identifying voltage problems. >> reporter: the tracks will be closed through monday at least. >> we've told the transit agencies that are helping with the buses to expect through tuesday even. >> reporter: uber is pitching in too. they are expanding their car pool options, uber pools into the affected areas of the east bay until b.a.r.t. gets back on track. >> one of the questions we asked is how do we provide a lower

cost option so people can more easily get from their homes and b.a.r.t. stations getting to work. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. will be fixing damaged train cars while waiting on a necessary part that can take months to order. in concord, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. all of the delays are really starting to wear down b.a.r.t. passengers. riders were more than eager to share their frustration with abc zen news. >> on a good day the commute is an hour and a half but days like today it's two hours. >> it's the worst part of your day because you just don't know what's going to happen. usually every morning and every evening you have a problem. >> besides the track problem, b.a.r.t. also experienced delays yesterday morning through the tube and around the daly city station because of an incident that involved police. you can get updates with our abc 7 news app. download it for free and enable push alerts. 8:05 is our time. about an hour from now, friends and family of sierra lamar will

continue their search for her. the teenager went missing four years ago on her way to school. weekly searches ended last year but volunteers will go back to an area for another search. lamar's body has never been found. the suspect is awaiting trial. prosecutors have charged him with kidnapping lamar after dna evidence was found. here's a new look at that maraga zipping hole. crews have made the sinkhole bigger to prevent a cave-in so workers can eventually safely get inside to make repairs. the sinkhole brought down a traffic pole and then severed a pg&e gas line. engineers are still in the investigation phase. it's not clear when repair work wi will begin. sheriff's deputies shot and killed a suspect after a standoff. the s.w.a.t. team helped everyone inside the home get

out, then pumped chemical agents inside. the suspect quickly exited. >> he exited a window of the residence carrying a firearm, at which time he raised the firearm up in the direction of our deputy sheriffs. the deputies in fear of their life fired and ultimately struck the subject. >> investigators said the victim was the man's foster child. 8:07 is the time. there's a new petition online to stop an ikea store from being built in dubdublin. it calls for a 339,000 square foot store. petitioners on change.org said any benefits would not outweigh traffic and other issues caused by the store. the petition is asking for 1500 signatures. if the store is approved, it would open in 2018. commercial crab fishermen finally have something to celebrate. the state announced the commercial crab fishing season will open one week from today. recent test results showed acid

thanks for choosing abc 7 news to start your day. here's a quick look from our mt. tam camera this morning. lisa returns in a few minutes with more on when we can expect some rain this weekend. a peninsula couple has been awarded $8 million in the wrongful death case of their baby daughter in 2010. a redwood city jury found 7-month-old abigail was suffocated by a mattress pad made by evenflow. her parents are sharing their story but evenflo is defending

its product. >> you walk in the room and she would just light up. >> reporter: just 7 months old, abigail stopped breathing at day care. her father was out of the country. >> i was running through the streets of berlin and calling out don't leave, don't leave, abby, don't leave. >> reporter: abigail died at the hospital. they were told she had been asleep on her back in another room. the coroner called it sids and thebltd it until the police report said she had been sleeping on her stomach. >> putting a baby on her stomach is not a crime and it happens and she should have been able to breathe on that mattress. >> reporter: a mattress pad inside an evenflo play yard. the jury found it was the equivalent of a plastic bag. >> you put your baby on that product, the baby cannot breathe and the baby will die. >> reporter: he hopes the legal victory will lead to change. >> what we need is a law or a regulation that says babies need to be able to breathe through the top layer of a mattress pad,

period. >> it's crazy that people just want to say, well, a baby dies in a crib, it's sids, let's go home. >> reporter: the jury awarred them $8 million. >> there's no amount of money that will bring her back, so -- but if somebody else doesn't have to go through this, i think it's worth it. >> reporter: at trial, evenflo cited the fact that all treating emergency medical providers and the coroner determined abby died from sids. in a statement the company says in part evenflo stands behind the design of its playyard mattress pad and remains confident it was not the cause of her tragic death. we are extremely disappointed with the verdict of the jury and are considering all options, including an appeal. katie marzullo, abc 7 news. >> the family has started a petition to make these mattresses safer. there's a link on our website. the time is 8:13. the head of the uc system

announced new steps to address sexual harassment and sexual violence. it includes mandatory sexual harassment training next week for all top officials and a new peer review committee. we must and we will do a better job of investigating all claims of sexual harassment or sexual violence thoroughly and fairly. eric thomas reports from campus. >> reporter: students were eager to show their love for the golden bears while they still had a chance against hawaii. two key players were out due to injury, and a popular assistant coach was fired just before the start of the tournament. the assistant coach was terminated for allegedly sexually harassing a reporter. >> it's terrible and it's been happening all around campus. it's never something you want to see and cover, or something you want to associate with the university. >> it's definitely not a good look for cal. it's definitely not something to be proud of.

>> reporter: he is denying wrongdoing and is exploring legal action to get his job back. he's not alone. just last week the dean of the uc berkeley law school resigned over allegations that he had sexually assaulted his executive assistant for months in 2014 and 2015. >> i'm appalled that this happened, but i'm not surprised. >> reporter: last october respected astronomer jeffly marcy resigned following allegations that he had sexually harassed and groped students for a decade. michael o'hare writes a blog and says it's got to stop. >> it's crazy stuff and it's humiliating for the school because it's not what we're really like. >> reporter: we reached out to cal officials for an on-camera interview but they declined. still janet napolitano is waiting for a commission she appointed to come up with recommendations on reducing sexual harassment on campus by early april. eric thomas, abc 7 news. the first-ever silicon

valley comic-con is taking place this weekend. abc 7 news is at the convention center after the event got under way. many we talked to was excited for what's to come this weekend. >> i think san jose and the bay area needed this. it's kind of not fair that only so cal gets all this stuff and we have a huge following here in the bay area. >> it really gives me the opportunity to let my inner nerd out. >> from "back to the future" to "star wars" this is the place for self-proclaimed in other words of all types to take in some of their favorite sights and sounds. william shatner spoke last night and talked about his friendship with the late leonard nimoy, also known as spark. a wayward piglet found running loose in san francisco's mission district now has a new home. the piglet, known as janice, has been adopted by al wolf, the director of the sonoma county reptile rescue. she'll be going to her new home monday. she was spotted in traffic last

that will arrive tomorrow and monday, we'll have a cooler air mass, increased cloud cover and as a result cooler temperatures. we've had a little bit of drizzle out there, maybe even a light sprinkle, but for the most part you'll have the clouds and mild temperatures today. so at 56 degrees in oakland, yeah, it definitely feels warmer out there by about 3 degrees. it's 50 in morgan hill, the cool spot, but in between we've got 52 in mountain view and half moon bay with the fog. and looking at, oh, about 54 in san francisco. so this is kind of a cool shot from our east bay hills camera looking at all of that fog continuing to push on in at the higher elevations with low 50s for you in napa. 54 in novato and concord. good morning, livermore, we'll be looking at temperatures still coming up through the 60s today. really around average. mt. tam pretty shot for you. the sun was up at 7:14. so we've talked about the mist and drizzle. spring begins tonight at 9:30 and we'll have an equal hour of daylight and darkness upon us

for the next couple of days. so 7:21 the sun sets. two light storm systems tomorrow and monday. monday looks to be just a little bit stronger. today after the 9:00 hour you'll notice that the low clouds retreat and plenty of mid and high level clouds. so today will not be as sunny as we've seen the past few days. boy, march was amazing with over 3.25 inches of rain for the average in san francisco. we picked up over 6 inches of rain so it was a miracle march or it is, the first half anyway, and we have about a bonus inch in livermore and san jose. so with a little more to come, we'll take it, it's not much. just a one on oi storm impact scale, a tenth to a third of an inch and also the one following that for monday. here's how it's going to play out with the showers in the north and the east bay. not much expected in the south bay, about a tenth of an inch.

we're dry sunday night into monday and this one a little bit later, 2:00, 3:00 pushing across the bay. the first system about 0.11 in mountain view to a third in santa rosa and then adding to that, a quarter of an inch for you in mountain view and in oakland. 7 inches in kirkwood, donner, maybe 4 inches through monday. 65 in san mateo, oakland. and the accuweather seven-day forecast, today on the warmer side. south bay could see about 70. light rain sunday and monday scattered about and then we warm up and brighten up for a spring-like second half of the upcoming workweek. >> and those sierras will take as much fresh powder as they can get. >> yeah, they're going to be skiing for months. >> lisa, thank you. coming up next, an abc 7 news bureau lends a hand to another bay area family. how 7 on your side's michael finney helps create christmas in march.

the family of fallen chp officer nathan taylor. the truckee high school boys and girls basketball team played a game against highway patrol officers and other local police departments. taylor died last weekend after being hit by an suv after directing traffic at an accident. the game raised nearly $5,000 for officer taylor's family. 8:24 is our time. christmas came three months late for a family in oakland. a generous abc 7 news viewer stepped up after watching the family's plight in a recent 7 on your side story. our michael finney was glad to help make it happen. >> reporter: mary paid a surprise visit to tiffany lewis and her two children last week. >> i saw your story on channel 7 and it really, really moved me. >> reporter: we first introduced you to tiffany and her two children in january. tiffany had purchased $600 worth of toys on layaway at toys r us. the retailer accidentally gave the toys to another family and tiffany's children were left without most of their gifts on

it's half past the hour on this saturday morning, great to have you with us. weatherwise, we're off to a foggy start this weekend. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking the conditions where you live. >> not too bad in san jose, but just a mile and a quarter visibility on the coast. in san jose today despite the cloud cover, you will be mild in the upper 60s. right now you are at 102% of normal for your rainfall with plenty of it for the season. that's some good news. just a little bit more on the way. it is 54 right now in the city with 54 as well in your neighborhood down in the south bay. so here's the way it's going to play out today. with plenty of cloud cover being revealed throughout the afternoon as high and mid-level clouds move in ahead of an incoming system tomorrow. so temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60s from oakland to

san jose. 61 in the city and we'll look at the rain moving in by midday tomorrow. i'll time it out for you as well into monday with a second system on its heels coming up. new this morning, the father of france train hero spencer stone is facing charges for his alleged involvement in an arson fraud scheme. brian stone and two other men are accused of collecting more than $1 million in insurance money collected from seven fires in sacramento. stone is charged with 13 counts of mail and wire fraud. investigators say he consulted and assisted the two other men with insurance claims. captured. one of the most wanted suspects in connection to the paris terror attacks is now in custody. security forces cornered salah abdeslam just yards away from his family's home in belgium. abc news reporter alex marquardt is in brussels where it all went down. >> reporter: gunshots rang out as heavily armed s.w.a.t. teams

moved in. this cell phone video showing residents running for cover. after four months on the run, one of the most wanted men in the world, finally cornered on a quiet brussels street. the man in the hooded sweatshirt believed to be salah abdeslam, dragged to a police car seeming to limp after being shot in the leg. the 26-year-old is the eighth attacker, the only surviving terrorist of november's dead low attacks that left 130 dead across paris. the french citizen grew up in belgium, a childhood friend of the alleged paris mastermind. on the night of november 13th he drove the car carrying the suicide bombers to france's biggest soccer stadium. abdeslam also rented a car that dropped off the isis attackers at the theater where the american band eagles of death metal war performing. authorities believe abdeslam planned on carrying out another

attack that night but got cold feet and called two friends in belgium to pick him up. when they stopped at a french gas station, surveillance cameras snapped this image. the three were stopped near the border but were allowed to pass into belgium. abdeslam's family claimed they didn't know where he was and urged him to turn himself in. belgian authorities launched a massive manhunt, focusing on loc molenbeek. abdeslam's friends told abc news he was trying to get to syria, worried that isis supporters in europe were unhappy he didn't detonate his suicide vest that november night. then on tuesday a break in the case. a raid on this house turned into a shootout, one man killed by a police sniper. two others escaping, one of whom may have been abdeslam who reportedly jumped out the back window. inside his fingerprints, a cache of weapons and an isis flag. the net tightening, the police

zeroing in and 72 hours later they had their man. alex marquardt, abc news, brussels. the country of cuba is getting ready for a historic visit from president obama. tomorrow will be the first time cuba will welcome a u.s. president after 50 years of isolation from america. president obama's trip comes after a breakthrough in relations between havana and washington, d.c., including the easing of travel restrictions. mr. obama will meet with cuban president raul castro as well as political dissidents. he'll also attend a baseball game. we're hearing from the baseball player who abruptly retired when his team changed the policy on how much time his son could spend in the clubhouse. adam laroche's move reopened the conversation on the work life balance. eva pokram has more. >> that ball hit high and deep. looks up, you can put it on the board. >> reporter: adam laroche is walking away from what was likely the final year of his career and the $13 million left

on his contract, retiring early after white sox vp ken williams told him he couldn't bring his 14-year-old son to the clubhouse anymore. >> in management sometimes you've got to make some unpopular decisions in order to have an answer for the next person that comes along. >> we're missing two big pieces to our puzzle. >> reporter: laroche tweeting that prior to signing with the white sox he worked out a deal that his son, drake, could be a part of the clubhouse, but saying this season i was told not to bring him to the ballpark at all. i had to make a decision, do i choose my teammates and my career or do i choose my family? the decision was easy. many of his teammates furious after a heated team meeting. >> drake is honestly one of the best kids i've ever met. i would probably say that the entire clubhouse is with adam. >> we're missing one of our troops and we can't get him back really. he's done. >> reporter: left-handed ace saying they were told three different stories as to why the teen was not allowed, even going as far as to question the vp's

good morning, everyone. we're taking a live look at sfo. lisa argen has been tracking the arrival delays and delays are currently averaging 33 minutes. lisa returns with the seven-day forecast for us coming up. kanye west has launched a pop-up shop in new york city centered around his new album. the rap star posted the announcement about the shop on social media and almost immediately fans started lining up hours before the store opened. new york police were called out to direct traffic as thousands of people stood in line. some of them drove up to eight hours to get a piece of the kanye west merchandise. take a look at this, pope francis is officially on instagram. this is the 79-year-old's first post and it began accumulating followers within minutes. so far he has nearly half a million followers. the caption reads "pray for me" in nine languages. the pontiff is pretty tech

the tank for the spurs tonight? minus andrew bogut who injured his toe. this ncaa tournament has been filled with upsets already. so many and 4 seed cal fell victim to 13 seed hawaii. the bears shorthanded ended up being beaten by a couple of bay area kids. tyrone wallace and jabari bird have injuries. sam singer, he was great, brought the bears within one. jalen brown fouls out with 4 points. jordan matthews kept it close. quincy smith out of antioch and city college of san francisco had 19. hawaii gets their first-ever ncaa tournament win, 77-66, and the bears season comes to an end. >> it's always disappointing to lose but doesn't take away from a great season. 23 wins. grew a lot with these guys. so of course you're disappointed, but you win ball games, you lose ball games. life goes on. we had a great season.

warriors ambassador donald foil and mike shumann live in san antonio with postgame interviews. 8:47 is our time. weatherwise we're in for some rain this weekend. >> yeah, we are. we have a few peeks of sun here and there but the clouds will overtake some of that blue sky you're seeing on the peninsula. livermore, i think you're going to see a few peeks throughout the day, palo alto here and there. as you look at live doppler 7 hd, you notice the cloud cover and its low cloudiness, which has created some problems on the coast with our visibility down to a quarter of a mile here around half moon bay. doing better at the airport. two miles santa rosa. we had 33-minute delays. those should be lifting. two and a half miles in napa. so we will be looking at a couple of weak weather systems sliding down from the pacific northwest. not a whole lot of moisture associated with them, but they're going to act to cool us off, increase the cloud cover, bring in that cooler air mass, drop the temperatures and allow for just a little bit of light rain.

there is that sun. temperatures are ranging on the mild side with our coolest number morgan hill at 50, 54 san francisco and san jose with oakland checking in at 56 degrees. with the clouds really nice shot from mt. tam. low clouds and high clouds, maybe a few sprinkles for you. we had some mist and drizzle in san francisco earlier. it's 53 by the delta and that southwest wind was blowing this morning. you will feel cooler today even with a partly cloudy sky out that way. socked in at the golden gate bridge where visibility a problem if you're headed to the robin williams tunnel. so mist and drizzle, spring begins tonight at 9:30 so that will bring in about a sunset at 7:24. the sunrise very similar to that, so we'll be looking at some spring showers sunday into monday afternoon and then we'll warm it up for the second half of the workweek. so this morning looking at some fog and the low clouds. by the afternoon, still more

cloud cover in advance of that next weak weather system. so northern california getting brushed by a few weak waves of energy while southern california holding on to high pressure, more sunshine, more mild temperatures, near 70 there with low 60s in monterey. how about 77 in fresno. and yosemite, they had fresh snow, near 70 degrees today. our storm impact scale rates our storm systems from 1 to 5. all winter and spring. we have one on the way tomorrow which will be light from a tenth to a third of an inch with the light wind. so timing it out for you, you notice early on we're dry but 9:00, 10:00 it's raining in the north bay. by 11:00 the system limps along to the south and east. it will bring less than a tenth of an inch in the south bay. around fremont, castro valley, this system a little more v vigorous. it holds together a little bit through 8:00 around san jose and cupertino, the santa cruz

mountains. by 10:00 some spotty showers. talk about the first system only a couple hundredths, maybe a quarter of an inch in napa and we'll have a second system favor the north bay for three-quarters of an inch of rain. in the mountains we could see chain controls with 2 to 7 inches. and the second system a little stronger. 68 palo alto, 67 in concord. the accuweather seven-day forecast brings showers tomorrow and monday. weak systems, 1 on our storm impact scale. sunnier and warmer the second half of the workweek and it will feel like spring. >> always good to see a couple of numbers on the forecast related to our storm impact scale. lisa, thank you. so the pink saturday event celebrated each year in the castro during pride week is likely going away because it doesn't have a sponsor. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez explains why no one wants the job. >> reporter: pink saturday began as a modest block party. that was 1995. like many events in the city, it
