live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is the abc7 news. >> now at 11:00, a tribute in lights. san francisco and cities around the world are remembering those lost in the brussels terror attacks. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. here is the latest tonight on the attacks in brussels. late today the state department issued an unprecedented travel alert to americans warning of possible terror attacks throughout the entire european continent. the death toll remains at 31 following twin bombings at the brussels airport and a subway station. 250 are injured including nine americans. isis is claiming responsibility. tonight a manhunt is underway for the attackers. police believe three men walked in at the height of rush hour and were outside the security checkpoint. molly hunter is in belgium tonight. >> reporter: tonight brussels is under darkness as on going

raids continue across the european country. the manhunt for this man as authorities identify as a suspect in the airport attacks. investigators say it started around 8:00 a.m. on tuesday morning. two bombs exploding. the terminal filled with smoke and chaos and people running for safety jie. a big bang. everybody cry and came along here. >> the force so great ceilings collapsed and people were lying on top of one another. and the horror continued. 9:11 a.m. an hour after the airport eke plosions -- explosions a mile away explosions at the office of the european union. the target is a packed metro car. children screaming in fear. >> this is the first time i saw such a thing in my life. >> reporter: the aftermath is leading to hundreds of injuries among those nine americans including mormon

missionaries all seriously hurt. with brussels under siege in the states law enforcement officials are beefing up security at hubs across america. including in new york city a top target. >> there is no credible and specific threat against new york city. >> reporter: here a city in mourning and signs of solidarity and condolences. belgium is at the highest threat level. isis claiming the uhing tays. and a warning that terrorists are planning attacks right now. molly hunter, abc news brussels. tonight world famous iconic buildings are bathed in the black, yellow and red of the belgian flag. the eiffel tower in paris and the brandenburg gate in germany and rome showed solidarity. you can see 1 world trade center in belgian colors.

>> and a similar story in the bay area. cornell bernard is live at san francisco city hall. cornell? >> san francisco is paying tribute to the people of belgium tonight with color and light. it is quite a sight here at city hall. earlier the ben gel -- belgian gathered in solidarity and standing as one. they sang the belgian national anthem together and a moment of silence for the victims of the terror attacks. >> it shows how united our community is as well and god knows this is important in times like this. >> important for this group of belgians who now call the bay area home. she says her heart is breaking. >> for terror or grief. i am not quite sure what it was. i had to go to work, but i cancelled.

>> he has been texting friends and family back home who are safe. he says the attacks will not break his country. >> there is strength to divide us and to put fear in us. >> she worked at brussels international airport and still has good friends there. >> unfortunately one colleague was badly injured but he will survive. >> many wrote messages for belgium. others are trying to explain it to their children. >> try to explain to the children what happened, but at the same time let them feel at ease and not be scared basically. >> grown-ups know terror is something to be feared. these belgians say solitaire tee is keeping them defiant and united. cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> the tsa announced it is adding security to major airports around the country. >> and now all u.s. citizens traveling to europe are being told to brace for more

making themselves more visible to help riders feel safe. they are also urging passengers, if you see something, say something please. the coast guard is strengthening the routine patrols in the san francisco bay. kathy johnson shared a picture from the ferry this afternoon. here is a look at the extra patrols tonight from sky 7hd. if you see news happening where you live share it with us on social media using the # abc7 now. we can find it and use it on air and on-line. san francisco police officers and firefighters took part in the timely active shooter drill on treasure island. the police departmentrovided video and pictures and medics are trained to quickly help and rescue victims. the drill was in the works for months and coincidentally happened the same day as the attacks. three uc berkeley students have been contacted and are safe. uc berkeley professor grew up in brussels. he says he worries about how the attacks will changing a city mostly known for

diversity and laid back atmosphere. the images of the attack are especially painful and personal to him. >> devastated. i called my mom and she was pretty aware that something could happen. when you see the images it is very surprising the impact and the power they have and the strength they have. >> you can show your support by sharing this image with your friends on face -- facebook. as you would expect talk of terrorism now dominates the race for the white house. still ahead on abc7 news at 11:00, the five remaining candidates share their plans to keep the country safe from an attack in their homeland. >> and the bay area muslims respond. what they are saying tonight about new calls to increase patrols in the muslim community. >> and a bay area police department wrongly accused this woman of a "gone girl"-type kidnapping hoax. now she is fighting back.

they say there was emotional distress when they referred to her kidnapping as the "gone girl" case, a reference to a best selling book and movie about a woman who fakes her abduction. police later apologized after the fbi arrested a former attorney for kidnapping huskins from her home and holding her captive and repeatedly assaulting her. police are looking for a cereal bank robber. surveillance cameras caught the bearded man in rio vista and fremont and dublin and lafayette. each time he passed a demand note and then taken off with an undisclosed amount of money. he got away twice in a black ford mustang. >> they got a good picture of him. let's talk about the forecast. >> perfectly spring-like. sandhya patel has more. >> we will introduce 70s in the forecast.
