live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." >> the terror network is being annihilated. those words from the president of france as raids continue today in the wake of a deadly bombing in brussels this week. and an isis leader killed in syria just days after that group claimed responsibility for the attacks in belgium. good afternoon. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm ama daetz. marci gonzalez joins us live with the latest in brussels. marci? >> reporter: several arrests today during those ongoing raids in belgium, including a man who was shot by police when he refused to drop the bag he was holding. so tensions clearly still high there, as the manhunt continues for two wanted terrorists. dramatic raids and arrests in belgium.

an ongoing determined effort to track down anyone with links to the deadly attacks in brussels. but the two surviving terrorists who helped carry out the bombings still on the run, including this man, shown with the two suicide bombers at the airport moments before this. the horrific aftermath of this scene where new york residents rex and sasha were among those killed. the dutch brother and sister pictured here on facebook on the phone with their family when the bombs went off. still missing, this couple from tennessee, justin and stephanie schultz. and among the survivors, american missionary mason wells, who was also at the scene of the boston marathon bombing and near paris at the time of the attacks there. >> i don't know if i was born under a lucky star. i was definitely fortunate to have escaped with the injuries that i escaped with at the airport, being very close to the bombs.

>> reporter: secretary of state john kerry in belgium meeting with officials and honoring the 300 people injured and 31 killed. >> it is with irreplaceable loss in mind that we will renew our vow to come together against a common enemy in order to keep our people safe. >> reporter: and the state department says two americans are also among the dead. they were spouses of u.s. personnel in europe. their names still have not been released. larry and ama? >> marci, what's happening with the terrorist suspect arrested last week in belgium? >> reporter: salah abdeslam was the top suspect in the paris attacks and prosecutors now say that ever since the attacks in brussels, he's stopped cooperating, that he's "exercised his right to silence" and france is still seeking his extradition. >> thank you so much, marci. stay with "abc7 news" for continued coverage of the brussels terror attack.

up in santa rosa, 72 degrees, napa 70. 72 at fairfield, concord and livermore. one more live view from our camera at pier 15, looking at blue skies over the skyline of san francisco. mostly clear this evening. a bright start to tomorrow morning, breezy and sunny through the afternoon hours, especially near the coast and around the bay. highs remain from the low 60s at the coast to mid and upper 70s inland. but we're going to have a bit of a cool down on easter sunday. i'll show you what to expect then and beyond sunday in my forecast coming up. >> thank you, spencer. crab fishermen back on the job today, sort of. >> crab season finally kicked off this morning after months of delays caused by a neuro toxin found in local crabs. but for many, there's still one more hurdle before they launch their boats. >> wayne freedman is live with the story. wayne?

>> reporter: good afternoon, larry. you see those crab pots behind me? we've been standing in front of them so many times in the last year, they haven't moved, not once. but they're about to move. firerman's wharf is about to get busy and no one is happier than the fishermen themselves. some good fridays are better than others. let's call it hopeful for the first time in five months. >> yeah, this has been a year for the history books. >> reporter: larry collins of the crab boat owners association, a group of businessmen who make their living on the waves whose lives have been on the bubble since california closed the crab season because of a toxin that made its way into the harvest. even today, researchers do not know all of the contributing factors. >> we're guessing. we're doing good, speculated guessing. but very few parameters were measured. the only thing measured is the temperature.

>> reporter: the timing could not have been worse, even more so for robert and brad from bodega bay. they're former deck hands who dreamed of owning their own boat. this seemed like a good year to buy one, until it became the worst. >> got a boat payment coming up. if we don't fish this season, we're screwed. >> reporter: for now, it's a matter of testing the crabs and establishing a price. a lot of people wonder why standards changing from state to state, that didn't happen here. >> i'm 100% sure the crabs are safe to eat. >> reporter: wayne freedman, "abc7 news." >> >> all of market street in san francisco is back open after the bomb squad was called out to look t a suspicious metal box. that was a couple of hours ago. that box turned out to be nothing dangerous. the block quickly reopened to traffic and pedestrians. police confirmed to "abc7

news" that a san francisco sheriff's deputy's gun, star, and gear were stolen during a break-in at the deputy's home. the gun and ammunition were secured in a lock box. another star belonging to a san francisco police officer was also taken. police just released surveillance video of the stabbing of a tourist last month in san francisco. you can see two robbers confronting 44-year-old paul tam on post street right there. this was on february 18. he was seen running into the street, attacked and stabbed in the head. he died yesterday after spending weeks in critical care. the robbers are described as an african-american man and woman. there is a $5,000 reward in that case. police arrested four people last night. >> it began around 11:00. police chased the robbery suspects to winson and myrtle

where the suspects crashed and were cuffed. matt keller has the details. >> reporter: four home invasion suspects, two men and two females were caught just after 11:00 last night after crushing during a high speed police chase. a fifth man ran off. some of the suspects were treated by paramedics and taken into custody. police found several weapons at the scene. >> there were firearms, hand guns, possibly a shotgun, a hand gun found nearby the vehicle, and a shotgun and possibly another hand gun inside the car. >> reporter: this all started when the five suspects picked up and possibly kidnapped a man and drove over to the apartment complex. the three male suspects and the possible kidnapping victim went inside. two men and one woman were robbed. the suspects took electronics, joulry and marijuana. the suspects then pistol whipped the two male victims. the man who may have been kidnapped stayed at the apartment.

the victims are cooperating and refused medical treatment. >> these things aren't very often random. so we do believe that this suspect or suspects have targeted this house specifically. >> reporter: police say the suspects could face home invasion, evading police, and possibly kidnapping charges. matt keller, "abc7 news." this is different. an apologetic car thief was arrested in fremont after she returned a stolen truck to a police officer at the scene of the crime. police say the woman made off with clothes and a truck from a man living near dome street in fremont boulevard. three hours later she came back, gave the keys to an officer and apologize apologized. former california state senator leeland ye is facing a deadline today to turn himself in for racketeering charges. the u.s. marshal service says he isn't yet in custody. he pleaded guilty to the charges

last summer and a judge sentenced him to five years. fbi agents arrested him and more than two dozen others in a sweeping sting operation in 2014. the raiders will stay in oakland for at least one more year. the board approved the extension of the raiders' lease at the coliseum. it will cost the raiders a lot more, triple the amount they used to pay. they'll now pay $3.5 million a year for using the coliseum, as well as their training facility. that's up from $925,000 a year. this deal includes two additional one-year extensions that could keep the raiders here through the 2018 football season while they look for a permanent home. and the giants are gearing up for a new season at at&t park. ski 7 hd was over the season. field crews are working on -- looks like they're working really fast.

this is "abc7 news." >> there will be another disruption to b.a.r.t. service this weekend. >> this weekend it's the fremont line and this has been planned for a long time. laura anthony is live at the bay laura?tation. >> reporter: scheduled or not, this seems like the worst possible time for another service disruption. but b.a.r.t. says they're going to go ahead with their scheduled maintenance on this line for the overall health of their aging system.

while their mysterious electrical problem continues, b.a.r.t. will go ahead with the plan to shut down a section of track on the fremont line this weekend. part of a larger project set in motion long ago. >> you remember last year, we shut down a section of the track to do maintenance work. we're doing the same thing here. >> reporter: that means the line between the bay fair station and san leandro will be shut down starting at 8:00 a.m. saturday morning and reopening by 4:00 a.m. monday. a free bus bridge will be set up to accommodate riders but there will be they delays up to an h. >> honestly, i don't want to catch transportation this weekend due to that, but it's something i kind of have to do.

>> reporter: the cathedral in downtown oakland is warning parishioners who might be relying on b.a.r.t. to get to easter services. so are the warriors, who have a home game set for sunday at 5:00 at oracle. laura anthony, "abc7 news." light rail leaders are also being asked to use a -- the construction is happening around the clock. express trains that operate during weekday commute hours will not run during tonight's evening rush hour. it's been nearly 40 years since the chowchilla school bus kidnapping. prosecutors called it the crime of the century. >> 26 children and their driver were abducted at gunpoint and buried alive in a livermore quarry. now those victims are fighting

back. >> this is a fascinating story. >> reporter: the kidnappers served decades in history. one is still there, the other two released. now they are filing a lawsuit to make them pay money. the schoenfeld brothers rick am jim drew up a twisted plan to get rich. they kidnapped a bus load of children, brought them to this quarry in livermore, and forced all 26 kids and their bus driver to climb down. >> the ceiling started to cave in and everything else. i thought we were going to have it right then. kept begging to let us out. >> reporter: they were down there for 18 hours. frantic parents overwhelmed the police switchboard so the kidnappers couldn't get through with their $5 million ransom. >> the ordeal is over.

some have minor bruises and scratches but all are well. >> reporter: 40 years later, the victims still feel the effect. >> they did a number of emotional damage to all of us, including our families. our parents. our lives were never the same after that. ever. >> reporter: the kidnappers each got life sentences. fred woods is still in prison, but the schoenfeld brothers have been paroled. >> we have these victims going how is this possible? 27 consecutive life sentences and these men are getting out free? >> reporter: ray boucher represents ten of the kids. he explains california law allows the victims to sue up to ten years after the kidnappers are on parole. >> if they get out, they ought to pay. and they ought to be able to stand in front of these

children, these victims, and answer for what they did to them. >> reporter: the case is now in mediation. no dollar figure discussed at this point. the kidnappers come from wealthy families. woods father owned that quarry where they buried the kids and the bus driver. their only public comment was this interview 20 years ago. >> i am deeply sorry for what i've done. >> i was immature, i was a follower. i made an extremely stupid decision here. >> it's just a lot of pain and suffering that we put everybody through that we didn't realize we were doing at the time. but now i hope that everybody has just gone on with their lives and everything can be back to so what normal. >> reporter: ten of the victims are plaintiffs in the lawsuit at this point. by the way, the bus driver ed ray passed away in 2012 at the

image, skies are clear across the bay area right now. here's a few of the golden gate bridge. these are our forecast features. clear skies overnight. there may be chances of patchy fog forming. skies mainly clear. we'll have a cooler pattern beginning on easter sunday. let's use san jose as our e indicator of the temperature trend. average highs this time of the year in san jose, 68. tomorrow's high is 72. notice how the temperature drops champly on sunday. it will drop further on monday and start rising back up to about 72 degrees by the end of next week. overnight, clear skies as i mentioned. lows mainly in the mid to upper 40s. a few low 50s around the bay. tomorrow's highs, mid to upper 70s if some inland locations. low to mid 60s on the coast. here's the forecast starting at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow.

clouds thickening, maybe a sprinkle or two in some of the higher terrain. and then that will taper off by mid morning and lit be gone and partly sunny in the afternoon for easter. so the forecast animation for the days ahead looks like this. eggsellent weather for sunday. then on monday, further cooling as i mentioned. highs in the low to mid 60s around the bay and only mid 60s inland. a steady pattern, same temperature range into tuesday. it won't be until midweek that we'll warm up again. but there's no chance of rain in the seven days ahead. here's our accuweather seven day forecast. cooler monday and tuesday. that's cool for the second week of sprik with highs only in the mid 60s. but upper 60s on wednesday.

well mpx, the material girl crossed the borderline, trying to keep people from parking in front of her new york city home. she posted fake do not park signs in front of her townhouse and added no parking in the cement there. the signs looked very official. the problem is, they weren't. this is street parking spaces for the public, not just reserved for superstar talent. she is allowed to keep up the signs about not parking in her

driveway, though. a bay area baby girl who is boasting luscious locks is getting national attention. look at that full head of hair at 2 1/2 months old. ahhh. she's the envy of the internet. today, her parents spoke to "good morning america." >> it looked so perfect. i haven't put any product in it. >> she's beautiful. she's folicly gifted. are you brushing it or is that just how it plays? >> she woke up that way. >> i can't look at anything but the hair. the hair is just -- >> apparently, dad was born with a similarly thick head of hair. >> when i see these things off

live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." >> here's what's making headlines at 4:30. police in brussels arrested three people in a series of raids related to an arrest in paris last night. but the two surviving terrorists may still be on the run. this as we're learning more about the victims of the attack tuesday that left 31 people dead and more than 270 injured. coming up on "world news" at 5:30, more on the americans killed and injured, including the two who were spouses of u.s. personnel. new at 5:00, "abc7 news" reporter vic lee was in gilroy where a baseball and bowling coach is under arrest accused of molesting four children.

to politics now. in the gop presidential race, the focus continues to surround not the top candidates but a nasty fight over their wives. in the latest twist now, ted cruz is responding to a tabloid report of rumors that he engaged in a number of extramarital affairs. here's lauren lyster. >> reporter: ted cruz has spent the last few days on the campaign trail telling donald trump to stay away from his wife. >> donald, you're a sniveling coward and leave heidi alone. she is way out of his league. >> reporter: cruz responding to this retweet, and an earlier tweet this week, be careful, lying ted, or i'll spill the beans on your wife. it began when this attack ad was launched by a super pac. cruz insists he had nothing to

do with the ad, but trump addressed it again on thursday. i didn't start the fight, he did. he knew the pac was putting it out. and in the latest sign of how deeply personal this gop race has become on friday, ted cruz denied a "national enquirer" report on rumors that cruz engaged in multiple marital affairs. >> let me be clear, this "national enquirer" story is garbage. it is complete and utter lies. it is a tabloid smear, and sit a smear that has come from donald trump and his henchmen. >> they have found new and shocking ways to go after each other. traditionally areas that have been off limits in the past are no longer off-limits. >> reporter: in the statement, donald trump says he had not read the "national enquirer" story, doesn't know if it's true and had nothing to do with it. laura lister, "abc7 news," washington. seems most americans don't want to wait until next year to get a new supreme court justice. a new poll found that 52% of

those surveyed want president obama's pick to be confirmed. mr. obama nominated merrick garland to replace justice antonin scalia who passed away, but republicans have refused to hold a confirmation hearing. some asian-americans are outraged over a proposed state legislation that would require asians to fill out their specific ethnicity on higher education and state health care forms. chris nguyen has the story. >> reporter: this afternoon, dozens of protesters came out to cupertino to share their concerns. >> this is wrong to subdivide people. it creates tension. nobody benefits from this. >> reporter: despite the diversity of california's large asian-pacific-islander population, state agencies only break down demographic data for a few of the major api groups. bill 1726 would require higher education institutions and

public health agencies to collect more data from additional api groups from across california. >> in the future, they would use that data to make some of the policies that will target different subcategories of asian-americans. >> some of these folks might be being misled and i believe their concerns are misdirected. this is a bill about supporting and embracing the api community and the diverse communities of our state. >> reporter: he says by failing to measure a large portion of the population, california is unable to track the progress of the most disadvantaged segments of that population. >> i think more information is better. more 2kdata is more helpful. >> reporter: san jose state university has been asking for this information for years. >> if we are saying that we are

totally different thing. >> corporations in the state have expressed their dismay. coming up, the bay area banning travel to north carolina and reaction from local companies with big presences in the state. pope francis presided over good friday mass today at the vatican. this is a look incite st. peter's basilica this morning. and in rome, the pontiff took part in the stations oh of the cross procession. christians believe jesus was columb crucified on good friday. a few hundred people walked around the perimeter of the church praying. the service was held in spanish and english. a special burial service will be held tonight. the easter bunny is going to have to wait for the easter egg

new images of colliding galaxy clusters have just been released by nasa. because of its huge mass, it bends the light of back ground objects acting as a magnifying lens. astronomers believe they can use it to find galaxies that existed only hundreds of millions of years after the big bang. there's some alarming news from nasa how fast arctic sea ice is melting. researchers say temperatures ran

10 to 15 degrees warmer during this past winter. sea ice that normally forms during winter grew more slowly and does not extend as far as usual. the melting ice now has global impact. >> things are happening faster than we expected. things are coming quicker than we thought in a much bigger way than we thought. >> nasa has dispatched research planes to fly over the arctic to gather more data. arctic sea ice is at the lowest extent since nasa began keeping track 40 years ago using satellite images. spencer christian, thankfully well above sea level. >> so far. let's take a look at live doppler 7 hd on this sunny afternoon, going into easter weekend. we have clear skies all across the bay area right now. tomorrow, statewide look for mainly sunny skies except the

so what i would tell you to do, and what i have done where i live, you go to the local store that you like, the supermarket that you normally go to and compare that with a couple of the farmers markets near you. if you google farmers markets, they are all over the bay area. tons of them. and then figure out price and quality. >> is it close, generally? >> the quality? >> the quality and price. >> the quality of some farmers markets is through the roof. others, they don't keep that good a track. so you really have to be careful. >> thank you, michael. how much will you spend for a bottle of ranch dressing? $4, $5, right? not $1,000. that's how much a north texas man spent for one classic bottle and it's more than five years old. this bottle sat in a wooden case at a dallas pizza joint. the restaurant only has one rule

here's tonight's primetime lineup -- in the hait ashbury neighborhood. lyanne melendez is live right now where not every business is welcoming these changes. >> reporter: well, larry, get this, summer 2017. now san francisco will remember the summer of love, and of course, the haight-ashbury 50 years later it is the spot. merchants say the last thing they want to see during that time is more construction and trees being cut down. along haight vote, there are

failing trees, blocking street lights and blocking poles and those that continue to damage the sidewalk. public works says some have to come down. >> it can be a danger to pedestrians or others in the neighborhood. >> reporter: the initial report calls for removing about 35 trees and relocating some. but public works is still ahe s assessing that number. as the changes are made, the municipal transportation agency will be working on its muni forward project, which calls for putting more stop signs, reducing bus stops for pedestrian safety, meaning a whole lot of construction. so where some of the new trees go up depends on the project. >> we asked is there going to be removing trees to add in other greening to ensure that the

corridor is welcoming. >> reporter: others say they don't trust what the city is doing. >> i would be skeptical of why they're trying to clean up to make it nicer or what they're trying to do with the trees. >> reporter: the project is scheduled to begin in 2017 when this neighborhood will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the summer of love. >> essentially businesses may have to close for a few days, and may see decline in foot traffic. >> reporter: merchants are asking to put it off until 2018. lyanne melendez, "abc7 news." a couple is consulting a sheaman to keep this san francisco free from being chopped down. the controversy began when the new property owners cut down three other trees. neighbors then got a restraining order and even got a shayman to say there were spirits living in the tree.

he's accused of running a chop shop, selling parts from stolen engines. here is his picture. he's a police officer for the city of santa clara. david louie is live with that story tonight. david? >> reporter: dan and ama, officer tyson green was arrested earlier today and brought here to the santa clara county main jail. the 14-year veteran of the police department is facing multiple felony charges, possessing stolen sports car engines. if convicted, he could spend five years plus in prison. besides possession of stolen vehicles, he's charged with receiving stolen property and operating a chop shop, a place where stolen vehicles are taken apart and the parts sold. the engines are said to believe worth about $15,000 each. investigators from a special multiagency task force said he stored the engines in a san jose

garage and offering them for sale on craigslist. the engines were taken from cars stolen all over the bay area in the last two years. sergeant tom has lietell is on trial right now for indecent exposure last may, which he allegedly exposed himself to a store employee. after that independen incident, was arrested for shoplifting a watch at a target store. and perhaps the department's most high profile charge was when an officer was accused of giving confidential information to a member of the hell's angels. getting back to the case of officer green arrested today, a potential customer was suspicious about a camaro engine that might be stolen and he called law enforcement.
