from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. now a confrontation over dreadlock at a bay area you have the. this video of a black college student confronting a white student about his hair style is being shared across the world tonight. now the campus is promising an investigation. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. the confrontation happened at san francisco state university. >> abc7 news reporter katie spoke with that man and is live on the campus with the story. katie? >> reporter: dan and ama, she is accusing him of appropriating her culture. i talked to the student with the dreadlock and he said he filed a police report, but he never at anytime felt physically threatened, and he is not the one looking to press charges. >> are you saying i can't have a hair style because of your culture? why? >> it is my culture. >> reporter: the woman in the

video is identified as bonita kindle and the man with the dredlocks is is cory goldstein. >> at the time i felt she was demeaning me and de moral loysing me jie. get off me. >> reporter: goldstein said he would be happy to have a respectful discussion with anyone about his hair, but he has no intention of changing his lock. >> it is something i have had since i was 17 years old and something that is part of who i am. i believe they are powerful and helped amplify myself and helped me connect to this world. >> reporter: the university is investigating the video and confirms the student who took the strid -- studio requested charges begins tindle. >> why are you filming this? >> for everyone's safety. >> reporter: reaction is mixed. >> if they don't want to talk, they don't have to. >> she was trying to make a point and it seemed to me the other person was not willing to engage with her. >> it is a free country and i have freedom of speech and expression. if he wants to wear dreadlock i don't see what's wrong with that. >> reporter: multiple attempts

to reach tindle has gone unanswered, but this student knows her. >> she is a hard working student like all of us are and people are talking about her and it is not okay. >> reporter: goldstein is not pressing charges, but he would like an apology. abc7 news. new at 11:00, a nasty smell had residents in the east bay worried. abc7 news is live outside in richmond. it gives off a smell like rotten eggs. it is a safety measure to relieve pressure. county crews said there was no public safety hazard. new at 11:00, a series of earthquakes have shaken the south bay. the first hit in the east foothills near san jose at 7:30 p.m. 14 more small quakes followed. the strongest was a 3.2 and the last hit after 9:00 p.m. and no damage has been reported. tonight an animal cruelty investigation is underway in the east bay after half a dozen animals were found dead.

they all turned up at the berkeley marina on sea wall drive. leslie brinkley explains who authorities believe may be responsible. she is live tonight. leslie? >> reporter: well, obviously there is is concern here about someone walking around the berkeley marina armed with a pellet gun shooting at wild animals and then leaving them to die. it is a peaceful place where people come for the view and to commune with nature. i. >> i came out here to be with my little boys and feed the birds and look at the squirrels over there. >> reporter: a grounds keeper found five animals, a possum, three raccoons and a feril cat lying on the rocks and the road. they were suffering from a mysterious ailment or injury and were foaming at the mouth. the animals ended up at this berkeley shelter. >> they later did a necropsy. >> this is considered cruelty to animals.

it is a serious offense. >> it is a felony. all of the animals died and one was euthanatized. >> it worries me that there is somebody out there that could potentially be using animals as target practice. >> how could anybody be cruel to animals? it is the most innocent being ever. for someone to take out their aggression on them is inexcusable. >> police are asking for the public's help in reporting any other injured animal or any people seen carrying a weapon. at the berkeley marina, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. today for the first time the alameda county sheriff threatened of beating a suspected it car thief. changes are underway in the department following this attack. it was caught on surveillance video. the sheriff says he takes a tough stance against any misconduct. >> it is incumbent upon me to make sure the culture is above

reproach and not by just a few of our deputies, but every single deputy sheriff. >> in response to this incident, the sheriff says deputies are now required to turn on their body cameras or they will be terminated. previously activating the cameras was optional. we know more tonight about the moments that lead up to police opening fire on a man wanted for shooting a concord boy. yesterday officers were able to corner james girard behind a fairfield mall. officers fired two shots when he reached for his waist band. he was trying to pull up his pants. he was shot in the neck and no gun was found. he is accused of shooting an 8-year-old boy outside the home on friday and the boy is recovering at home. a popular silicon valley tech executive died tragically on easter sunday trying to save his daughter being shocked by electricity swimming in a pool in palm springs.

how the community is rallying around the family. >> i can picture him out and about playing with his kids. >> reporter: to say jim trammel's kid were his world is is an understatement. he gave his life for his oldest daughter on easter sunday. they were swimming in the pool when they say faulty wiring sent high voltage through the water. he got his 10-year-old out, but jim died a short time later. >> he was always really nice and good to the kids. you can see him jumping on the trampoline. >> reporter: roses rest at the family's front door. they left their home last week for palm springs where they have a vacation home. they planned to spend the whole week there with family and friends. jim posted the photos of his kids a few hours before he died. now his wife kim is staying by their daughter's side in palm springs and she remains in critical condition. >> they haven't lived here that long. that's terrible. >> reporter: word of the tragedy is spreading not just

through the neighborhood, but on-line as well. messages of sadness and sorrow fill jim's facebook page. >> he can walk into any room and everyone was excited to meet him. i don't think he ever met anyone he wouldn't consider a friend. >> reporter: that feeling was mutual considering how many people have donated to jim trammel's go fund me page. it started today and thousands of dollars are being donated hourly. lisa amin do lesion, abc -- lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. and natasha judge and iesha johnson from san jose face a number of charges. about 1:30 this morning an apartment manager called 9-1-1 saying she witnessed the pair prying open mail boxes. the mail was returned to the intended recipients. a california judge dropped the encryption case between apple and the justice department. it comes after the fbi says they didn't need apple's help to break into a locked iphone

pleasanton and all of the bay area, this is abc7 news. lifeguards had to rescue at least 20 students who were swimming in the ocean in the san diego area. the kids were from a high school swim team in riverside county. lifeguards warned their coaches the 59-degree water was too cold to swim in. the coaches said the students could handle it. one girl was rushed to the hospital. seven others were treated for excessive is cold exposure.
