tesla model 3 looks like. ceo elon musk unveiled it last night and the electric auto company is now taking online reservations for the $35,000 vehicle. those are some of your top stories on this wednesday, april 1st. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning, everyone. we're going to start this half hour on a serious note coming out of virginia. that state trooper gunned down at a richmond bus terminal. >> trooper chad dermyer was a member of the state police counterterrorism unit taking part in a training exercise when a shooter suddenly open fire. abc has details now. >> it is with an incredibly heavy heart tonight that i announce to you the loss of virginia state police trooper chad dermyer. >> reporter: 2:45 p.m., police respond to the shooting at a gray pound bus station on north boulevard in the city of richmo richmond. >> all units be advised. we have an active shooting. >> reporter: passengers panicked. >> i just heard pops.

and i've never actually heard a real gunshot before so i didn't really know what was going on. and then i just saw everyone ducking. >> the male subject pulled out a handgun and shot chad multiple times. the male subject continued firing his weapon as two other state police troopers return fire. >> reporter: the gunman was shot dead. >> the shooter is down. the scene is secure. >> reporter: the trooper was taken to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. >> he is survived by his wife michele and two children. i'd ask that everyone keep the family in their thoughts and prayer. >> reporter: in the chaos, two people at the station struck by gunfire are also receiving treatment at vcu medical center. with the help of the fbi, atf, u.s. marshals and homeland security, a sweep was performed to make sure the scene was clear. but it's still too early to know what prompted the shooting. the two bystanders struck by gunfire are expected to survive. reena and kendis? >> our thanks to adrienne there.

many residents of the deep south are spending an uneasy night with the possibility of more tornadoes. at least three touched down last night in eastern mississippi and western alabama, damaging homes and businesses. one of the trees knocked down fell on to a vehicle trapping the passengers. others took down power lines. no serious injuries were reported, as well. and all the rainwater in arkansas is causing flooding and in jonesboro, it washed out a major road. look at that. a long-time resident says it's not the first time he's seen the road flooded but it's the first time the water took the road with it. the washout may have been triggered by an accident at that spot or the accident may have caused that -- by that huge gap. overseas now to india where there's a desperate search under way for survivors over an overpass collapse. a surveillance camera catching cars waiting to pass, and then the road above crashing down on them. dozens of people have been pulled out alive but officials fear more are buried in the rubble. at least 22 people were killed.

this is all that's left of a family home of a palestinian man who fatally stabbed an israeli last year. israel says such demolitions effectively deter attacks. critics say the tactic punishes family members who did not commit the crime. there's been a surge of palestinian stabbings in recent months and a surge in home demolitions. the palestinian president says he's working to stop the attacks. back here at home world leaders are convening in washington, d.c. for the second day today. it's for a nuclear summit. as president obama and others take steps to free the world of nuclear weapons, donald trump is drawing fire for refusing to take them off the table. we get more now from abc's jim avila. >> reporter: donald trump hustling into his soon-to-open d.c. hotel to meet privately with foreign policy advisers after a string of explosive comments about new york weapons. >> can you tell the middle east we're not using a nuclear weapon? >> i would never say that. i would never take any of my

cards off the table. >> how about europe? >> reporter: the white house blasting trump's suggestion that south korea and japan might have to develop their own nuclear arsenals. >> frankly, it would be catastrophic were the united states to shift its position and indicate that we support somehow the proliferation of nuclear weapons to additional countries. >> reporter: trump also faces sharp criticism for dodging a question about whether he would use nuclear weapons against isis. listen to how he tries to change the subject. >> would you use a battlefield nuclear weapon to take out isis? >> i don't want to use -- i don't want to start the process of nuclear. remember one thing that everybody has said, i'm a counterpuncher. rubio hit me, bush hit me. >> this is about isis. you would not -- >> by the way, can i do one thing? this is a very good looking group of people. could i just go around so i know who the hell i'm talking to? >> sure. >> reporter: trump never did answer the question and tried to frame his statements as negotiation tactics. the white house, however, frames it as dangerous. jim avila, abc news, the white house.

well, trump is still getting slammed over his comments on abortion, and he's now suggesting they were taken out of context. trump quickly took back his remarks after saying that women who have abortions should be punished if they were illegal. but he now says he may have misspoken, blaming the remark on what he calls a convoluted interview. hillary clinton is lashing out at the bernie sanders campaign, denying she accepted money from the fossil fuel industry. she was visibly angry when she was confronted by a greenpeace activist at a campaign event in new york. she said she is sick of the sanders campaign lying about her. but the sanders campaign fired back saying that clinton had indeed taken contributions from lobbyists for fossil fuel companies. concerns are about cyber security at the state department. experts found security gaps in a department system that could have allowed hackers to doctor visa applications or pilfer sensitive data from the half billion records on file. a spokesman for the state

department downplayed the security threat in a statement that was issued to abc news. police in albuquerque have released dramatic video of a drug bust that went horribly wrong. ending with a lieutenant shooting one of his own detectives. the video captures the chaos when police set out to take down two suspects in an undercover meth sting last year. but it only took seconds before the bust went bad and detective jacob grant was shot at least eight times. >> it's jacob. talk to me! talk to me. >> are you okay? >> no. >> come on. >> detective grant has undergone dozens of surgeries and will require medical care for the rest of his life. the lieutenant involved is no longer with the department. investigators still don't know what exactly went wrong. it turns out the meth involved in that bust was only worth about $60. a preliminary study finds that the more hits to the head suffered by young football players, the greater risk of cognitive problems later in life.

the study of 93 former players looked at head injuries serious enough to be classified as a concussion and those less serious. but researchers at boston university cautioned that the study was not definitive and meant to be only a first step. and instead of hat trick, it was a rat trick. the florida panthers hockey team gave away 10,000 rubber rats last night. the reason? they're really too complicated to explain. >> after the panthers scored their first goal, fans started throwing the rats onto the ice. the refs threatened to hit the home team with a delay of game penalty. so, then the new jersey devils fans at the game threw the rubber rats onto the ice. >> it didn't work despite the two rat penalties, florida won, 3-2. you know, 20 years ago the panthers got into the stanley cup finals, but before the first game, one of the players killed a rat in the locker room with a stick. so, that's why the successful season was called the year of the rat.

why she says she's not nervous in the slightest. battery's up on this friday, april 1st. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." good friday morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. >> let's get started with the sad news we learned about from that bus terminal, of course, in virginia. it was a shootout. the trooper badly wounded by gunfire has now passed away. >> xhad dermeyer was a married father of two and marine corps veteran, just 37 years old. he and other troopers were taking part in an exercise when a man suddenly open fire sending frightened passengers scrambling to safety. abc's david kerley has more on how the deadly attack unfolded. >> reporter: officers moving innocent bystanders away after the kay yotic situation. >> the guy was saying get down. crawl, crawl! >> reporter: virginia state

police reportedly in the mitts of an exercise at that richmond bus station when a trooper encounters a suspect right inside the door. >> while he was talking to this individual, the individual pulled out a gun and shot the trooper. >> all units be advised. we have an active shooting. >> reporter: two other troopers returned the gunman's fire. passengers flee the terminal as ambulance crews arrive at the still kay chaotic scene. >> going to be mass casualties. >> reporter: the trooper who approached the gunman was shot at close range. two civilians who suffered gunshot wounds, said not to be life-threatening. the suspect was killed. >> the shooter is down. >> reporter: as the s.w.a.t. team stood down, virginia police officials would not be specific about what kind of exercise the officers were conducting at that bus station before the shooting. police are still in the middle of the investigation here at the bus station. there's no indication this was anything more than a crime, no link to terrorism. but sad news, we learned that the trooper shot has passed away. david kerley, abc news, richmond, virginia. dozens of students in texas

have been hospitalized after their bus rolled over. the bus was carrying members of a high school track team in jasper county. investigators say the right tires of the bus went off the pavement and then the driver overcorrected, sending the bus into the ditch. it rolled over several times before stopping. the bus was not equipped with seat belts. it's going to be a long night for many people. more tornadoes are possible overnight into the morning into the deep south. at least three twisters touched down last night in mississippi and alabama in an area straddling the border. one caused extensive damage to homes and businesses near mississippi. there are no reports of injuries or deaths. one fallen tree trapped passengers in their car. eastern oklahoma residents spent yesterday cleaning up from a tornado that touched down several times. homes and businesses there as well in about a square mile of a mostly residential area had damage. a large tree fell on a popular wedding venue. the owner says it's probably a total loss. there were only minor injuries

in that area. turning to the race for the white house and sdth donald trump huddling behind closed doors with republican leaders. the rnc meeting came after trump sat down with foreign policy advisers followed by a tumultuous day sparked by his comments on abortion. comments trump says were taken out of context. it's your voice, your vote, now here's more with abc's lauren lyster. >> reporter: donald trump off the campaign trail and meeting privately with gop leaders. telling fox news -- >> it was a very good meeting, very good people, very -- actually, a terrific meeting, i think. and it's really a unity meeting. >> reporter: this coming just a day after trump started taking heat from the left and the right for his controversial comments about abortion. >> just yesterday donald trump said women should be punished for having an abortion. >> donald trump is clearly not prepared to be president of the united states. >> but you have to manage. >> reporter: the criticism coming after this exchange during an msnbc forum when asked

at a park in the south bronx last night to rally for bernie sanders. the sanders campaign is clashing with hillary clinton over allegations that she's accepted contributions from the fossil fuel companies. clinton was visibly angry when she was confronted at a campaign event by a greenpeace activist. >> will you act on your words? >> i do not have money from people who work for fossil fuel companies. i am so sick -- i am so sick of sanders' campaign lying about me. i'm sick of it. >> wow. the sanders campaign fired back saying, clinton has taken money from lobbyists for the industry. meanwhile, sanders just had another record-breaking month raising $44 million in march. breaking news from philadelphia where a 7-week-old baby boy is safe after being kidnapped from a popular mall. police in upper marion say a suspect is in custody. they say tips came in once the

surveillance video was broadcast. the child was taken from a food court in the king of prussia mall. police say that the suspect started talking to the mother and offered to hold the baby while the mother took a phone call. then walked away with him. the baby is safe and has been checked out by doctors. a new study finds there's been no change in the percentage of children diagnosed with autism, but researchers caution it's too soon to say whether the numbers stabilizing. about 1 in 68 school-aged children have autism or related disorders. that's the same as it was when health officials checked two years earlier the slicer at your local deli may not be as clean as you'd like to think. the fda requires the machines to be cleaned once every four hours, but according to a new study, only about half of the delis met that requirement. chain delis were more likely to meet the standard than independently operated one. >> i never thought about that.

promise you, this aircraft is 100% safe and everything is fine. >> reporter: here's something else we're seeing. roads like this one that have been washed away. you could fit a truck in here. and with more rain on the way, all of this is much more likely. steve osunsami, abc news, jonesboro, arkansas. well, that virginia state trooper severely wounded by gunfire at a greyhound station in richmond has died. chad dermyer and other troopers from the state police counterterrorism unit were at the terminal for an exercise when a man approached him and open fire at close range. the gunman was killed instantly when troopers returned fire. what investigators don't know is why the gunman started shooting. >> we do not, we don't know if he was here visiting and happened to be at the bus station or if he had come here and just gotten off a bus. >> two civilians were hurt in that shootout but they're expected to recover. trooper dermyer was a marine corps veteran and married father of two. he was 37 years old. new details in the brussels

terror attack. abc news has learned that the new york police department, not the fbi, warned authorities, dutch authorities, about the brothers who blew themselves up. that warning was passed to the dutch a week before the attacks but was obviously ignored. police say a fistfight over a woman outside a florida bar escalated. one of the combatants allegedly went to his car, got a machete and attacked two other bar patrons. one of them was severely injured. police say the machete-wielder and two other men fled into a car in miami. he was caught after allegedly attacking a police dog. the charges include attempted murder. to politics, a massive show of support for bernie sanders. some estimated 15,000 people crammed into a park in the south bronx last night. sanders talked about wall street greed and taking on the donald. meanwhile, his campaign just announced another record-breaking month of fund-raising. $44 million in march alone. mostly from small-money donors. ted cruz has cleared a legal

hurdle in pennsylvania. the state supreme court agreed that cruz is indeed eligible to appear on the primary ballot later this month. a republican voter had challenged cruz because he was born in canada but cruz is eligible to become president because his mother was born in the united states. and one more note here, just days after threatening to sue the rnc, donald trump sat down with the party chairman. trump described the meeting as terrific, saying they talked about unity. the meeting was planned before trump was slammed for comments on punishing women for having abortions if it were illegal. after backtracking, he's now suggesting they were taken out of context. a high-profile officer from miami is the new chief of the ferguson police department. the hiring of delrish moss puts a black man in charge of a mostly white department. ferguson has a majority african-american population. the ferguson police and the municipal court system came

under heavy criticism following the fatal shooting of michael brown. and a new development in the case of an oklahoma reserve deputy who shot and killed a suspect during a drug operation. he said he thought his gun was his taser. he now faces trial and new video sheds light on the incident. here's abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: a raid on a suspected drug house. >> what'd i do? >> everything. >> reporter: in police body camera video obtained by "the frontier news," you can see former tulsa county reserve deputy robert bates as he talks to the handcuffed suspect. he is shh'd by a deputy. what are you moaning about? what's hurting? >> reporter: bates appears to have drawn both his taser and handgun. significant because three weeks later, bates would shoot and kill 44-year-old eric harris during an undercover sting. >> oh, i shot him. i'm sorry. >> oh, god! he shot me! >> reporter: bates says he confused his gun and his taser. >> first and foremost let me apologize to the family of eric harris.

>> reporter: attorneys for the harris family say bates, a wealthy local businessman, was too cozy with the former sheriff, stanley glance, lacked required training, and this latest video proves he should never have been serving alongside sworn officers. >> it's completely unnecessary for mr. bates to be willing to taser let alone a handgun. >> reporter: the former sheriff glance could not be reached for comment. and next month bates goes on trial for manslaughter. he's plead not guilty. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. an alarming discovery on a school bus in virginia, explosive material found in the engine block of the bus. it was left behind after government training exercises conducted while students were on spring break. the bus was used to transport children from two days before anyone noticed. the cia says the training material was in a benign state and did not pose a threat. california is set for the highest minimum wage state in
