live, from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." good afternoon. thank you for joining us on this friday. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm larry beil. we begin in the east bay. a 3-year-old girl is injured after she was left alone with a dog. it turned on her, biting her in the face. laura anthony is live with the story now. laura? >> reporter: this dog described as 3-year-old male american bull dog is now here at animal services for further assessment. this happened this morning at a home on jones street. the 3-year-old girl was bitten in the face we're told inside the house by the dog that is owned by another family member from sacramento. contra costa animal control told us the girl sustained two

one-inch lacerations to her face. she was taken to children's hospital where she was being treated in the emergency room. her injuries are not considered life threatening. it's unclear whether the dog was aggressive towards the child. >> we're told the dog was alone in the house with the little girl. there were other adults in the house, just not in the room at the time. so we're still gathering information and trying to find out if there was any provocation or if this just kind of happened naturally. >> reporter: now, as is routine in a case like this, the bull dog is here at animal services. it will be on a routine ten-day quarantine. during that time it will undergo further tests for rabies and those sorts of things. at the end of that time period, the owner could vend the animal or petition to have that dog returned to him. in martinez, laura anthony, "abc7 news." >> laura, thank you. a couple killed after

crashing their suv into a fighter jet was from san jose. the victims were identified as anthony castillo and melissa miller. this crash happened late wednesday at the naval air station. the chp says officers were trying to check on a car parked on the side of the road but took off and the chase began. police are teaming up with the d.a.'s office to investigate an officer involved shooting. investigators say a man came out of a door with a gun and was shot by an officer. he was not seriously hurt. he was later arrested. the death toll has risen to nine in a series of overdoses from a street drug tainted with fentanyl. 35 people have overdosed in the past two weeks in sacramento county. federal and local drug agents are looking for the source of the pills that appear to be

intentionally laced with fentanyl. parents from one school in the san ramone valley district are threatening to boycott lbgt acceptance week. >> lyanne melendez has more on the issue. >> reporter: there are many parents here in san ramone who welcome the discussion. >> it's the leadership kids that came to the leadership teacher that said we want to do this and got the support of the administration to do it. i'm so proud of the kids. >> reporter: kids between the ages of 11 and 13 will be shown videos like this one, a transgender crowned homecoming queen. there will be multiple discussions ending on a friday with a day of silence to spread awareness. >> parents should have a say. >> reporter: and so about 20 parents met with the

superintendent to suggest making changes. >> i think the material is something best suited for a discussion at home with your family. >> reporter: others like the concept but suggest that other issues on discrimination be included in the discussion. >> body image, strong language at the school, calling people names, cultural issues, people with accents, people that smell different. there's so many issues. >> reporter: the principal has already agreed to make minor changes. >> as part of the conversation, the videos aren't going to be shown in full anymore. the principal decided to take certain portions out and he'll only show portions of them. >> reporter: at the end of the homecoming queen video, there is a fund me page to pay for the transition procedure. that has been taken out. others say it's not enough and will consider having their kids opt out. lyanne melendez, "abc7 news." santa clara police are investigating a car vandalism

place, not because of what was broken but what was left behind. >> tiffany wilson has more on this potential hate crime. >> reporter: a week of panic attacks and a week of fear and anger that started with a simple trip to the car monday. >> it was about 7:40. i walked out to the car, got in the car. i looked up and it said die [ bleep ] on the windshield. >> reporter: he initially thought the hateful words were a joke. then the truth sunk in. >> i felt like the world was caving in on me. i felt like everybody was out to attack me. >> reporter: a book, a dvd, and a message in the morning all in the same hand writing, all anti-gay. >> gays get out of the complex. being gay and smoking is bad for you. do not -- do what god wants.

late night hours. larry and ama? >> thank you so much, spencer. a man fell while standing at a bus stop in berkeley this morning. he suffered a medical condition. sky 7 hd was over the scene around 10:00 a.m. there was no crash. the man was taken to the hospital. in fremont, caltrans will be doing maintenance work on the railroad tracks that cross fremont boulevard. the work begins at 10:00 p.m. tonight until saturday just before midnight. there will be closures in that area. so be aware of detours. cal train riders will notice changes monday. trains have to wait longer at the platform while everybody boards when operating at 100% peak times. so they're adjusting departure

times. also, an additional bike car will be added, increasing capacity to 72 bikes. we have the full lest of schedule changes at abc7news.com. this is video of water being pumped away from a damaged pipe on 84th avenue. an "abc7 news" news viewers alerted us to this yesterday. it is now fixed, but the cause is not known. now to los angeles where this water main break was so large, police had to close down streets. you can see surrounding streets flooded. water officials say a 12-inch pipe burst. some sports news. today's honor for the golden state warriors goes to steve kerr, named the western conference coach of the month.

than six seconds. >> sales were huge. about 116,000 plug-in cars were sold in the u.s. in all of 2015. well, tesla just presold 180,000 model threes in only 24 hours. and today, that number has climbed higher. >> alyssa harrington joins us live with the unparalleled success and what it means for the bay area. >> reporter: the numbers speak for themselves. in 24 hours, tesla got more orders for their new car than all plug-in cars did last year. the ceo has taken to twitter to talk about some of that success. here's a look at a couple tweets he put up today. one says, thought it would be slowed way down today, but model three order count is at 198,000. then he tweeted, definitely going to rethink production planning. here's video unveiled yesterday. the timing of this means a lot to fremont where the manufacturing plant is head

quartered. exactly six years ago on april 1, the plant that was there, thousands were left without a job. a lot of those workers rebounded with jobs at tesla, and the company is extremely important to the east bay's economy. >> tesla is now there and is prospering and is manufacturing and already has many preorders for the third addition. tesla is in this area because the ecosystem of supply, logistics and manufacturing companies, there's only 80 companies in the immediate 30-mile radius that can support tesla in this area. >> reporter: tesla won their innovation award in 2013 for advanced manufacturing. the success of the tesla model three is expected to create more jobs. one of the city council members in fremont told me the same thing. they expect a lot of job growth and say it's a great thing for

the risk of dangerous rip currents and sneaker waves through tomorrow evening. so stay away from the coastline if you don't need to be there. here's the view at the golden gate bridge. low clouds and fog return tonight, pushing well inland. and then highs will soar into the 80s on wednesday and thursday. let's take a look at tonight's conditions with low clouds and fog. lows around 50 in oakland. notice how it just continues to push inland during the early morning hours. cloudy start to the day tomorrow. midday, the clouds back at the coastline, giving us sunny conditions with a few lingering coastal clouds. microclimates reflect a wide range of temperatures tomorrow. a relatively cool 61 in downtown san francisco.

across the bay in oakland, 66. let's move inland, 73 tomorrow in walnut creek and antioch 75. mainly low to mid 70s inland. on sunday, it will be a little cloudier, but still mild under high clouds with highs mainly in the mid 70s and it gets milder still on monday with highs climbing to the upper 70s. that sets the stage for warmer winds pouring offshore on tuesday, driving highs up to around 80 degrees or move. so more's the accuweather seven-day forecast. highs up to about 80 inland on tuesday. maybe even mid to upper 80s midland on wednesday. thursday, highs approach 80 inland. mid 70s around the bay. and we'll see mid 60s on the coast on thursday. even milder on the coast on wednesday. that's probably a good beach day next wednesday. next friday, temperatures dropping sharply. and there's a slight chance of

takes big donations from big oil. >> secretary clinton has taken significant sums of money from the fossil fuel industry. >> reporter: sanders attacking just after clinton said this. >> i am so sick of the sanders' campaign lying about this. >> reporter: so who's right? according to the center for responsive politics, employees of oil and gas companies have contributed just over $300,000 to clinton's campaign. but also $54,000 to sanders. the sanders' campaign has been fighting a green peace report focusing on lobbyists. oil and gas lobbyists have given $126,000 to the clinton campaign. the report cites large donors connected to the fossil fuel spray giving $3.2 million to a super pac supporting hillary clinton. both sides now vying for votes in new york. clinton talking about making

[ applause ] >> reporter: meantime, the state department announced it's halting an internal review of hillary clinton's most sensitive e-mails until an fbi investigation is complete. lauren lyster, "abc7 news," washington. we're learning more about the man who police say killed a state trooper in virginia. police don't know what caused him to open fire. 37-year-old trooper chad dermeyer died after being shot multiple times. los angeles police detectives say a knife found at o.j. simpson's former estate was not the murder weapon used to

kill simpson's ex-wife and her friend ron goldman. last month, police were testing a wife a construction worker said he found on the property 12 or 13 years ago. a retired police officer held on to the weapon for all those years. today, president obama called the prospect of isis or other terrorist groups getting ahold of nuclear materials one of the greatest threats to global security. the president made with other world leaders to discuss strengthening nuclear security worldwide. marci gonzalez has the story. >> reporter: protestsout side of the nuclear security summit if washington, d.c. where president obama met with more than 50 world leaders. the last day focused on the potential risk of terrorists accessing nuclear materials. >> it would be a humanitarian, political, economic, and environmental catastrophe with global ramifications for

decades. >> reporter: heightened concerned that building a dirty bomb is likely a goal of isis and other terror groups after two of the brussels' attackers used hidden cameras to record one of belgium's top nuclear scientists. experts say with about 2,000 tons of nuclear material in the world, some of which is not properly secured, more needs to be done to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. >> we're in a race against time here. the chances are, it could happen at some point, so we need to do everything we can to prevent it. unfortunately, i don't think we're doing as much as we can. >> reporter: president obama saying the u.s. is reducing its stockpile of enriched uranium, urging other world leaders to do the same. >> there is no doubt that if these mad men ever got their hands on a nuclear bomb or nuclear material, they most certainly would use it to kill as many innocent people as possible. that's why our work here remains so critical.

>> reporter: earlier in the summit, the leaders focused on the iran nuclear agreement and concerns over north korea's nuclear weapons program. marci gonzalez, "abc7 news," new york. it's still not clear when the brussels' airport will reopen after terrorists struck last week. today belgium's prime minister and key members of the government discussed a timetable. thr chicago teachers and their supporters staged a one-day strike aimed at a new contract and halting education funding cuts. they were hoping to pressure state lawmakers to address the dire financial outlook. today's walkout kept nearly 400,000 students out of school. here's new video showing

today, apple hit the big 4-0. it started in 1976 in a cupertino garage. today, apple is the world's most valuable public corporation. a new multibillion headquarters will open in cupertino, and we're looking at some of apple's milestones. jobs and wozniak unveiled the apple i in 1976. if 1998, the i-mac was born. in 2001, ipod and i-tunes. six years later, the iphone, and then came the ipad tablet and seri in 2011. the products have gotten bigger, smaller, thinner and they've gotten faster. thinner and faster is like spencer christian. >> that's because i have an apple a day.

[ laughter ] let's move along. live doppler 7 hd showing we have sunny skies across the bay area right now. but the low clouds and fog will be back tonight. speaking of tonight, here's your hourly temperature pattern. palo alto will see temperatures drop off about four degrees between 6:00 and 10:00 p.m., from 54 to 50. then gradual tapering off will continue overnight. this is the view right now. and here is your 12-hour day planner tomorrow. a cloudy morning around the baby 7:00 a.m. with cool conditions inland. clearing by noon and mild conditions inland. mid 70s tomorrow afternoon. but only up to about 60 on the coast. then partly cloudy and cooler in the evening hours tomorrow. so a look at highs across the board tomorrow. a range from upper 50s at the coast to 60s around the bay. and looking ahead to next friday at 12:00 p.m., we'll see some

that's over nine and a half million dollars of investment by pg&e, and that allows us to provide clean energy for everyone here. it's been a great partnership. together, we're building a better california. this is "abc7 news." >> california's service employees union today announced it has stopped gathering signatures for the november ballot in the effort to raise the state's minimum wage. >> this comes one day after legislators voted to raise the minimum wage to $15 by 2022. now another state is raising the minimum wage, as well. >> reporter: california, now new york. after months of protests, both state legislatures have come to agreement to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. here in sacramento thursday

where the state's $10 minimum wage will gradually increase to $15. >> i have to choose between feeding me and my child, paying rent. >> reporter: burger king worker holly diaz brought to tears. >> we can do right by workers, advance our economy. >> reporter: new york's increase is regional. new york city workers would get $15 an hour in three to four years with slower increases elsewhere in the state. >> can be adjusted in the future when you know what the economy is doing. >> reporter: critics argue this hike will lead to small business layoffs. >> i don't see how it's going to totally help the economy. >> reporter: experts say it only highlights a much larger concern. >> this does not fix the broader problem of wages in america. we don't have enough jobs that pay enough to support a family. second, we have a lot of people who don't have the skills to do those jobs.

>> reporter: california's governor is expected to sign the minimum wage increase monday. brandy hit, abc news, los angeles. the u.s. economy picked up 215,000 jobs in march, beating projections. the labor department says the proportion of americans in the labor force crept up to 63%, the highest level in two years. the unemployment rate rose to 5%, mostly because more people are in the labor force now. one downside is the manufacturing numbers lost 29,000 jobs in march. michael finney is here now to answer questions. this is from maureen, who asks, the roast chicken i purchased at the store had a disgusting green matter inside. please help. >> yikes! it's probably the gallbladder. don't ask me why i know that.

>> burt sent a tax question, do you still need to tay pax it is you make less than $1,000 in a year. >> you probably won't have to pay, but you may have already paid, so you want to file your forms to get money back. this is interesting. if you made -- it's about $110, $108 actually, from a church or religious group, then you have to file. i don't know why that is. you also have to pay medicare and social security no matter what you made. so what you need to do is put together tax forms. you may have money coming back any ways, but you probably don't owe income tax at all. >> poultry, denisry. is there anything you do not know this >> i've had this weird job for so long. the world health organization says a new case of ebola has been confirmed in liberia. they reiterated the earlier

proclamation that ebola is no longer an international health emergency, but flareups will occur. scientists identified the structure of the zika virus. >> and the world obesity rate is rising. more's jane king. >> researchers from purdue university and the national institute of health have i.d.'s the structure of the zika virus, which lays the foundation for further study and a possible vaccine. it has the same underlying structure as west nile and yellow fever and they hope they can use this to explain how the virus causes infections. one in five people globally could be obese by 2025. the study says if current trends continue, 18% of men and 21% of women will be obese in ten years. childhood stress is linked

>> primetime tonight -- a professional photographer's quick thinking and his drone helped firefighters control a fast-moving fire. >> chris nguyen has the story. >> reporter: off adam's drive, it was this fire monday afternoon that caught many by surprise. photographer brandon vacarro first heard about it on his radio. >> i was able to really know where i needed to go in the air to figure out how i could help them. >> reporter: because of the windy conditions, the fire protection district had a tough time fighting the fire. they weren't able to get the usual aerial support from cal

fire. he volunteered to put his drone in the air and got permission from the command post. he piloted the drone, transmitting the images in real time, giving fire crews a better look. >> it gave us that situational awareness how far the fire was from the houses and that kind of stuff. >> reporter: it's believed to be the first time a bay area fire department relied on this sort of technology to help with knocking out a fire. memo park is pursuing its own drone program and stresses the technology can be helpful when used by a trained operator. he says he was gland to lend his expertise. >> safety is number one when you fly and making sure people on the ground are safe, as well. again, that comes down to training. and i train every day. >> reporter: as for who started the fire, police identified a possible suspect who may be connected to a homeless encampment. chris nguyen, "abc7 news."
