>> it's sunday, april 3rd. thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tyler. >> let's start a quick check of the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. it's almost a summertime pattern, waking up to the low clouds and fog that are already retreating. we are looking at the sunshine the delta and concord. visibility newt two-thirds of a mile in the north bay. all the cloud cover to the north. a piece of energy will floatly northern california and that will increase the marine layer. beach temperatures and limited sunshine. this is syracuse right now. highs in the 60s. speaking of south bay we have clouds now, plenty ever sunshine. temperatures a bit above average today. low 50s for our inland valleys

and upper 40s with the fog in santa rosa. so we will lack for the fog to hang out at the coast and is talk in detail about the numbers today and a big warmup coming up. chris. >> thanks. breaking news out of pennsylvania where two people have died in an amtrak train accident south of philadelphia. there were 341 passengers passengers open board and crewmembers. 340 people have been injured. the train hit a backhoe that was on the track t happened just before 5:00 a.m. our time. the about lead engine derailed on the train that was traveling from -- >> it kind of threw us you have the chairs, what we were sitting in. and there was a lot of smoke and everybody was like -- the train

kind of stopped and everyone was running to the front. >> ac track has suspended all service between philadelphia and new york city. say with abc7 news withup dates on the story and twitert on abc7 news bay area. back here at home we are following developing news out of san francisco. a mother and her young daughter are safe this morning but the search for them may have been connected to the investigation of a man well-known for being beaten by almeda county sheriffs deputy. abc7 news has the latest. >> reporter: police say 23-year-old dana rinta and her one-year-old daughter, scarlet, were found you unharmed. they were reported missing the same day that officers raided a home where they arrested stanislav petrov, who police say is her ex-boyfriend. you can see him handcuffed, led out of the house by the fbi and put in the back of a police car. >> we know at some point in time they were, and there is conversation that we want to have with her. >> investigators want to talk to rinta about him.

petrov is also the man seen in this surveillance video. he's suing the almeda county sheriff's office after deputies were seen beating him last november. he led the police on a chase in a stolen car and now's back in custody facing federal prosecution. >> that was a federal investigation that we partnered with. it involves the fact that mr. petrov is not supposed to be in possession of firearms. >> i spoke with rinta's mother on the phone. she told me she does not know petrov and he's not scarlett's father. the mother and daughter were last seen in the balboa park neighborhood on march 14th. police won't say where they were found. a source says petrov is also the suspect in a domestic violence case. the victim, his ex-girlfriend, rinta.

alyssa harrington, abc7 news. this afternoon, san leandro police are planning to provide more details about recent attacks by someone who has gone from shooting out windows to firing at people all with a bb gun. had last night detectives gave us these pictures showing a man holding a bb gun, as well as the car used in the crime. see someone firing a bb gun in this surveillance video captured in january. more than 120 cars have been damaged since december. that adds up to $60,000 in damage. in this video a window was shot out at an upholstery store on east 14th street. new details about a vandalism mystery in monterey. karen cummings provided this picture. it's the head from a statue. a girl found the head of the statue in breakwater cove yesterday afternoon. vandals knocked the head off at the presidio of monterey in october.

someone else defaced a statue in -- for carmel mission. if about. >> new video shows the aftermath of a fire that shows a lakeview drive home last night. this morning two people are recovering from smoke inhalation that gutted a home in bay point just before 6:00 last night. contra costa county fire protection district provided this footage. it took crews about 40 minutes to put out the fire on lakeview drive. firefighters believe the fire caused about $300,000 in damage. there was suspicious activity before the fire started. >> in solano county, a man is accused of attacking and robbing two women on a hiking trail. the sheriff's office has released a sketch of the man. the attack happened a week ago friday afternoon in the cold canyon reserve. the women say he showed them a gun, attacked one of them and stole their money. they said the suspect spoke broken english with a heavy

accent. a weekend skiing trip didn't happen for a group of students from the university of san francisco, and you can see why. this facebook page photo shows their charter bus on fire yesterday morning. this happened along interstate 80. 40 students were evacuated from the bus. no one was hurt but some of their luggage was damaged. the students were put on a bus back to san francisco. at this point there's no word yet on what caused the fire. a group of teenagers from san francisco's bayview district are back home after a life-changing trip. it was all part of operation genesis, a program created by a san francisco police officer who also raised money for it. his mission is to enrich the lives of young people. lisa has the story. >> the first to greet this group of tired and weary travelers and

san francisco police chief greg suhr. this was a trip full of firsts. the first time many used a passport. first tame most left home, and the first time ever truly seeing the world outside of the bay view. san francisco police officer jason johnson started operation genesis to give these kids a chance to change and grow. >> i realized they didn't really know about their culture, where they came from and the struggles they took and why they have the opportunities they have. >> we were there as the teenagers left their neighborhood for the eight-day long trip. while in ghana they donated st. louis to schools, spent time with kids and time in villages. poverty was hard to ignore. >> you can be grateful for everything because not everybody has it like us. >> some it don't have shoes or nice clothes and out here we have everything and we can't even say hello to one another. >> a sense of gratitude and community are two things mike promises to build once he gets

home because life in the bayview can be dark and lonely. >> i had to walk someone past him, and i could interact. usually they take offense to that but i want to bridge the gap between me and my neighbors. >> this 16 year old is starting with his own family and with this african unity bowl. >> mike is the youngest of seven and has a brother in prison. he's sure his brother would have made different choices had he gone on this trip. now it's up to these twelve to show the bay view all that they have learned. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. .

is it good. >> good morning, everyone. police are looking for an armed man who robbed a twelve-year-old boy inside a bart station. it happened friday night as the man was going home leavinghe el~cerrito del norte station. his mother is demanding answers. we will have the story you will only see on abc7. >> i was in shock. >> this parent said she never expected to get a call from her son saying he had been robbed inside a bart station. >> scared, traumatized. >> her twelve-year-old son talks about the chilling armed robbery that happened at the el~cerrito del norte station on friday about 6:00 p.m. he was coming home from his cousin's house when a man came from behind and told him to keep walking. we agreed not to show his face. >> then he put a gun to my waist.

i didn't know what it was, but i looked down and saw the gun. >> the man ordered him to keep moving down the station stairway. >> he told me to stop where there wasn't cameras. so they couldn't see him. he reached in my pockets and felt my wallet. >> he said the suspenct then demanded his backpack. >> did you give him his backpack. >> no. >> what happened. >> i pushed him off. >> the suspect got away. >> where are the police? there's -- i know there's a police station at the bart station. >> bart police told us off-camera officers patrol station property, but are not always inside. police are investigating the the robbery and will review any security camera footage but at this point there are few leads. last year a man not on the train and called 19-year-old man in oakland cameras may have been decoys and

did not record the crime. meanwhile the suspect is at large. in the meantime this mom is glad her son was not hurt. >> we have to find another means of him traveling. >> his mom says so more bart trips for now. abc7 news. an update to the case of the missing man from san mateo. michael schafer has been found dead in san francisco. police did not tell us how he died. he had been reported missing on monday and his family was concerned that he didn't have his medication. this morning we know a san diego roller derby player died in a freak plane crash on a freeway. a single engine plane landed on its belly open interstate 15 north of san diego and skidded some 250 feet before slamming into the back of a nissan ultima yesterday morning. the person was sitting in the back of the car and was killed immediately. she and her teammates were parked on the shoulder as the driver adjusted his bluetooth when the train hit the car. five people were hurt, including the pilot and his passenger. >> nerve-racking seeing the plane come over the top of me and hit the road and slide and hit car.

>> the plane's original owner is former new york yankee's catcher matt knoaks, who also played for the giants in the beginning of his career. he had the plane built from a kit. in a strange twist matt made an emergency landing in the same plane on the same interstate 156 years ago. the plane will be towed so the investigators can take a closer look what happened. >> the governor will sign the minimum wage deal tomorrow. it will raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. he said it proves team can get ahead. it will go up each year reaching the $15 in 2022. he said it provides flexibility as economic conditions change. abalone hunters are hitting the water this weekend for the opening of the season.

mild weather and surf suggests good conditions for the shellfish. but abalone hunting is dangerous because of the physical demands of strong waves and the tankless diving. the season starts in june and ends in october. >> yesterday abc67 news was at sand hill field for the yearly festival of colors. thousands of year he people put extra color on their hair, clothing and faces to raise money for underprivileged kids in india. the event has been going on for 20 years. tickets are sold out. happening now, hundreds of runners are taking part in the france america rock n' roll half-marathon. this is video from our golden gate bridge camera earlier today shows participants running across the fan. the race started about 6:30 this morning on the great highway and finishes at the civic center. there are a lot of road closers

because of the race so you can expect some minor traffic headaches in the city this morning. 9:19, the time. lisa, you are tracking possibly 80s and 90s in the forecast? >> yeah. you were kind of april viola us of the runners too. >> i was. i need to be out there now. i have friends doing the race. >> we have good running weather today. we are talking spring-like, breezy winds, and you are right, we are talking 80s and 90s. temperatures as warm as we've seen since last october. so really, really not what you are expecting for early april. in fact, not only records, but we could see a slew of 90s in our east bay, our south bay, and we are talking 80s at our beaches! so we are looking at the fog now, which is nice, but it's also kind of like a summer like pattern t retreats to the coast. and the weak weather system that will he chance the onshore flow today that will visit the

extreme northern california. we widen the view and the clouds are bumping into the ridge of high pressure. here's the rain t brings rain to extreme northern california. could see some mist and drizzle along our coast tomorrow and the marine layer. as that washes out and building in behind it high pressure, double bearing high pressure, bringing 60s hear today. some showers, perhaps, over the northern mountains in the next couple of days and the snowpack not bad, 86% for just about the entire sierra nevada. 350 right now. in san francisco temperatures have not budged much. 52 half moon bay, mid-50s from mountain view to san jose. 53 oakland. looking a the a lot of cloud cover around the bay. you see the marine layer from the east bay hills camera. that's mt. diablo blow in the distance. 49 with 2 to 3-mile visibility. 50 novato. the delta 52 degrees, as well as concord. and some sunshine there. livermore 52. from the golden gate bridge it

looks brighter out there. the deck of low clouds continues to be chewed out. but some of it is going to stay at the coast. we have some clouds this morning, a sunny afternoon. feeling like spring today and tomorrow. we have the breeze, although with the fog it's a little bit summer-like. temperatures, though, will be near spring-like averages. and then look tech autumn warmth because numbers from the coast to inland valleys aren't going to be in the 20, 25-degree warm. 80s coastside, 90s inland, no fog. and and this hasn't changed. there's a high wave heights. still intact. and right now patches of fog at the coast. 56. 62 san francisco. that's afternoon. about 70 today in oakland. similar to yesterday. nice afternoon for you. walnut the creek maybe a bit of extra cloud cover in the north bay and also along the coast. but this is what we are lacking at tuesday. 81 san jose. 90 on wednesday.

beach or on the peninsula, you will notice that on shore push later an in the day. mostly cloudy right now but temperatures will warm up. seasonal readings. 49 in napa, as well as santa rosa, 52 concord and livermore. and seenal readings in the low 60s for san francisco. and on the peninsula maybe a few degrees warmer in the inlapped valleys. we talk about a major warmup and a return to spring showers all coming up in a few minutes. chris. >> thanks, lisa. turning to politics now, both republicans and democrats are trying to secure undecided voters in wisconsin before that state's primary on tuesday. wisconsin could play a huge role when it comes to both parties' nominations. abc news reporter devin dwyer has more. >> the next president of the united states, donald j trump! >> after a rocky week on the campaign trail, donald trump calling in reinforcements. the gop's frontrunner's opening act in wisconsin this weekend, sarah palin.

new security measures will be in place, including scanning people and luggage before they can enter the airport. 35 people died at the airport and a subway station on march 2 -- 22. delta airlines announced they will suspend their service from atlanta to brussels until march of next year.flight out of jfk as soon as the international terminal fully reopens. the airline also said they will re-accommodate anyone who has already booked their flights. when fire destroyed a family's home a little girl lost her most prized possessions but thanks to one author who put out the call for help, a new chapter. abc news reporter cecilia vega has the story. >> the fire swept through the home and all her books destroyed. >> we kept saying it's going to be okay, heidi. it's going to be okay. >> a few days later an author came to her school and asked her to draw with him and gave her

indonesia has threaten to ban leonardo dicaprio after he expressed concern or endangered wildlife and habitat on instagram. here's one of the posts that indonesia top immigration official commented on yesterday. dicaprio complained about the expansion of the palm oil industry pushing orangutans and other species toward the brink of extinction. indonesia said if he keeps posting this, he can be black listed from the country. >> a company that disagree he is with his statement scan file for the ban. the celebrity magazine "hello" apologized to george clooney about fabricating an interview. quotes from the article in which the actor supposedly talked about his marriage were picked up by media outlets across the world. clooney said in a statement he did not give the interview and the quotes are not accurate. "hello" said they bought the interview in good faith from an agency. they have since apologized to clooney and his wife.

one of the bay area's most well-known voices is starting an afternoon gig tomorrow on ksfo. ron owens dominated bay area radio for 40 years on kgo radio. he made the announcement of the switch on air thursday morning. owens was inducted into the national radio hall of fame in chicago last year. they laid off many staffers at kgo. there will be unannounced programming changes at kgo this week. kgo radio is not affiliated with kgo tv. >> still ahead, after years of waiting, the oculus the oculus virtual rift reality headset is finally here. we will take a look at the industry and what you can get forasmuch as $500 or as little as 15 bucks. first the time right now is 9:37. we are taking a lack outside from the emeryville camera a this morning. lisa will have more open the forecast and the warmup on the way coming up.

university. president clinton and chelsea led students from around the world in community issues. the program wraps up today with a day of community service. >> golden gate park is turning 146 tomorrow. it's one of the world's most iconic park destinations. the park is home to many city-wide events including outside lands, the a.i.d.s. walk and hardly strictly bluegrass. it's also a place of learning, the academy of science, and the young museum and the conservatory of flowers. it welcomes $13 million every year and to celebrate admission to the japanese tea garden will be free tomorrow where you can see the cherry blossom trees bloom. nice trees there. >> hope you are not driving there. parking is never fun there. we will see a little sunshine there today. you will notice the on shore push. you will feel it on the peninsula, at our beaches and patchy, low fog at the coast. low 50s now.
