that heidi cruz retweet. trump now admitting his mistakes. olympian athlete arrested, tonight, the soccer star speaking out. and, traveler beware. the simple scam that could cost you thousands. what you need to know before booking your next dream vacation. good evening. thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. we begin with new details on the deadly amtrak crash, the train carrying more than 340 passengers. slamming into a backhoe on the same track, and partially derailing just outside of philadelphia. killing two track workers. the pictures obtained by radio station wche showing the mangled wreckage. more than 30 people injured onboard. as the ntsb opens its investigation tonight, the big question, why was the equipment on the same track as the train? david kerley in pennsylvania tonight.

>> reporter: a smashed windshield, the amtrak engine's front wheels off the tracks after the violent collision. >> i woke up to being thrown into the seat in front of me, and the window got blown out right beside me. and there was a fireball. >> reporter: the train could have been traveling upwards of 100 miles an hour. >> all you could see was a lot of dirt and debris flying past the train. and there was a couple of like fire flashes. >> reporter: pictures capturing passengers evacuating themselves, and walking away from the damaged train. at least 35 of the 331 onboard hospitalized. many thrown from their seats, just before 8:00 in the morning, south of philadelphia. sunday morning is prime track maintenance time because fewer trains are in service. a backhoe is used to move rail ties and other materials. officials say as the train was traveling south, somehow that backhoe was on the active rail line.

the amtrak train slamming straight into it, debris flying into the first couple of amtrak cars. the engineer of the train, also taken to the hospital. the question tonight, which piece of equipment was not supposed to be on the tracks? >> we'll be looking at the track structure and the work being done at the time of the accident. >> reporter: the two dead, the operator of the backhoe and a supervisor, according to a federal official. it was last may that an amtrak train derailed north of philadelphia at night. eight passengers were killed. the two derailments, while unrelated, happened less than a year and 20 miles apart on amtrak's busy northeast corridor. in today's case, many of the uninjured were bused away from the scene. but tonight, limited service has resumed through the accident area. >> and david joins us live. the big question, why were they working on the track, with the train operating on the same track with the heavy equipment? >> that's the big question.

you can see the engine is still here and the train behind it. was the train or the equipment on the wrong track? that's what the ntsb will try to answer. by looking at signals, and talking to dispatchers. by the way, we've seen a number of trains come by. looks like for the commute tomorrow, it should be fine. only limited service right now between delaware and philadelphia at this point. tom? >> david, thank you. and now to the deadly weather. hitting millions tonight. high winds wreaking havoc. this car flattened by a sign in indiana. strong gusts knocking down trees and knocking out power for thousands. frigid temperatures bringing spring snow across several states. here's rob marciano. >> reporter: tonight, dozens of cars caught in a snowy pileup in upstate new york, including a tour bus. emergency crews racing to reach the injured. all part of a wintry blast

bringing dangerous winds across the east. in boston, this bmw crushed by a falling tree. the two people inside the car did not survive. in nearby foxborough, that downed power line igniting right in the street. wind gusts so powerful in indianapolis, they knocked that chipotle sign right into this vehicle, flattening it. luckily the driver managed to get out safely. and in new jersey, winds gusting over 50 miles per hour, damaging homes. >> all of a sudden, the entire house started to shake, and the wind was almost screaming. our neighbors' awnings were being ripped off, and we saw our fence blowing around the neighborhood. >> reporter: power crews scrambling to get the 90,000 homes without power back online. behind the wind, a blast of snow sweeping parts of the midwest and northeast. in pittsburgh, a chilly start to baseball's opening day. ground crews clearing ice and slush off the field before

today's pirates/cardinals game. and the winds outside of boston, enough to splinter these two large pine trees. still some snow on the ground here. brutally temperatures for the beginning of april. >> and the calendar says april, we're in spring. but there's more cold headed our way? >> yeah, another clipper that will bring more snowfall, more snow coming, and even colder air. snow into upstate new york, winter storm warnings for buffalo, new york. we do expect significant snow there. and by 10:00 a.m., a good swath of snow, across much of central new england and upstate new york. including boston, significant accumulations, maybe 3 or 4 inches, and a swath of 6 inches across parts of western new york and parts of michigan. and look at tuesday morning's temperatures, below freezing in new york and boston.

it in a different manner, yes. >> reporter: he didn't stop there. this morning, going for scrambled eggs and a side of humble pie. >> do you think that anything you've said in the past week and a half hurts you with women voters? >> it might. >> reporter: his shifting positions creating that firestorm -- and fodder for "snl." >> at this point, donald trump has to be pro-choice, because he's made all of the choices. >> reporter: when we caught up with ted cruz, he told us trump's position on abortion is no laughing matter. >> donald's answers are the answers of someone who is a liberal trying to say what he thinks conservatives want to hear. >> reporter: the democrats are neck and neck in wisconsin and locked in a heated debate over debates. hillary clinton telling george stephanopoulos in an interview for "good morning america" that she agrees to face off with bernie sanders on "gma." >> i'll be there. i think it's a great opportunity to reach an audience that may not always be able because of other obligations to tune into debates. >> reporter: sanders says he'd like to debate clinton before the big new york primary. but stopped short of committing.

>> people of new york deserve to hear us discussing the important issues facing that state and facing the country. >> reporter: bernie sanders and ted cruz are both exceedingly optimistic they'll win the most delegates on tuesday, giving them fresh momentum and likely extending this race into the summer if they can pull it off. tom? >> devin, thank you. >> i want to bring in matthew dowd. matt, you think trump's rough week will hurt him more in the general election than next tuesday? >> i still think he's the likely republican nominee, but he has a long way to go. i think he's offended so many demographic groups, it's made it very hard for him to get elected in a general election. >> and let's say if bernie sanders wins tuesday. that will make it hard for hillary clinton? >> i think it makes it very hard to clinton to win this outright before the convention. if he wins, that's 6 out of 7 states, and he will have all the

next at 6:00. a deadly counterfeit drug blamed for nine deaths in sacramento, makes its way to bay area. a search for vandals armed with bb guns intensifies as they turn their weapons on people. a police chase that shut down the bay bridge today. abc7 news at 6:00 starts now. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm matt keller in for eric thomas. a drug overdose problem blamed for nine deaths in sacramento has reached the bay area, redwood city fire said they have responded to overdoses involving the drug fentanyl. in most cases the people did not die. investigators say people believe they are buying norco tablets on the street. it's a mild pain killer, instead

they have fentanyl, which is 100 times more potent than morphine. in sacramento paramedics have responded to three dozen overdoses and nine deaths in a week. our sister station in sacramento spoke with the sister of a victim today. >> the fake norcos, to relieve some pain, i hope it did but he didn't take that, knowing that he was never going to wake up again. >> on friday, federal authorities issued a public safety alert been the drug. last year several deaths were linked to fentanyl, masked to look like xanax. >> a open for vandals damaging 120 vehicles using bb guns and have now turned their weapons on people. san leandro showed a video with a suspect it shooter. cornell bernard has more information.
