live with the latest. >> reporter: the wayward sea lion is safe and sound. got the attention of lots of mo motorists. the sea lion tried several times to cross the highway. you know, it's not the first time. curious sea lion pup was safe inside a crate on the side of highway 37 after a very busy morning exploring the sites of sonoma county. sky 7 hd was overhead as the sea lion pup went from the waters on san pablo bay to dry land, blocking eastbound highway 37. u.s. fish and wildlife wardens got there first. >> we kept an eye on him as he swam in the water, each time he tried to come up on the bank and approach the freeway, we distracted him and kept him in the water. >> reporter: wardens and chp officers assisted by good samaritans used boards to to ral the pup into a temporary dog crate until the marine mammal center could arrive.

>> it's not uncommon. california sea lions are crafty, go where they want to. >> reporter: this one certainly did. last december a 500 pound elephant seal hopped out of san pablo bay and tried to hop the same highway until she was coaxed back into the water. why here? no one knows. >> we haven't had very many get stranded in this area. fingers crossed we don't have anymore any time soon. >> reporter: this pup appeared to be healthy, headed to the marine mammal center for a checkup. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. now there's a live look outside. it was beautiful today. >> big changes this week. spencer christian with the accuweather update. >> you're right. big weather changes our coming our way. of course, it's nice and mild right now. it's going to get much, much warmer by midweek. we'll probably find ourselves in record high temperature territory. whoa, a bug in my lens. here's a look at doppler 7 hd.

i've got much more ahead. i'll show you how hot it's going to be by midweek and there's a chance of rain by the end of the week. >> spencer, thanks. californians did a good job of saving water last month. residents used 24% less water in february. which is just a bit shy of the state's mandated 25% conservation target. so not bad at all really. the state water resources board says californians rose to the occasion. most cities are saving more than the conservation requirement. breaking news out of tennessee where five people have died in a tourist helicopter crash. it happened in severville in eastern tennessee. authorities say the helicopter went down and burst into flames. all five people on board were killed. the men arrested during an fbi raid friday night appeared in federal court today. >> yes, petrov is suing alameda county following an alleged excessive use of force incident that happened in november. but the fbi says friday's raid was unrelated to that case. >> abc 7 news reporter melanie

woodrow was in court today. she's in the newsroom with more on the story. >> reporter: dan and ama, petrov's mother says her son is suffering from ptsd following the november incident. it's unclear what charges the fbi arrested petrov on on friday. the courtroom was cleared this afternoon before petrov went in front of the judge. >> come to the front door. >> reporter: fbi agents raiding this home on teddy avenue friday arresting petrov and an unnamed woman. agents raiding the home for the second time. abc 7 news obtained this video of a march 8th fbi raid. fbi sources say petrov was not on their radar at the time. but when agents entered the home, he was inside. sfpd arrested petrov march 8th in connection with controlled substances and firearm but he was never charged. in an exclusive interview with abc 7 news last week, petrov said it wasn't him. >> don't know what you're talking about, man. >> reporter: prior to friday's

fbi raid, someone shot a man outside the teddy avenue home. fbi sources say in addition to whatever is in the sealed petrov arrest warrant, investigators are still exploring what, if any, connection petrov has to that shooting. his mother says he's suffering from ptsd following this november incident with alameda county sheriffs deputies in which he was hit with a baton more than 40 times. off camera, she said she believes law enforcement is shaping public opinion to make petrov a monster. according to the alameda county sheriffs office criminal report, petrov has a long criminal history dating back to 2003 with at least 4 felony convictions from 2006 through 2014. sources say his criminal history is one reason investigators have sealed the case for now. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. we have developing news in san francisco. workers found human remains on fillmore street while digging underneath this dry cleaning business. abc 7 news has sinc learned

police recovered the skulls and bones of an adult. investigators also found a watch and shoes that were on the skeletal remains. homicide investigators are treating the bones as suspicious. san leandro police are hoping new surveillance video will help them catch the b.b. gun vandals who damaged 125 cars since december including four more over the weekend. the suspects have been seen driving this silver toyota 4 runner with a unique black fuel cover. police are also looking into whether the vandals are responsible for shooting two men in recent weeks, one outside a local club. >> shot on his hand. >> the san leandro police department hopes a tip from the public will help them catch the group. comi coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00, hear from a victim hit by the b.b. gun. caltrans conducted a sweep of two large homeless

encampments. caltrans does regular sweeps there but the homeless keep returning. personal items along with shelters individuals have built were taken down and degrstroyed yann hufnagel is fighting back over allegations of sexually harassing a female reporter. lawyers have given uc berkeley 900 text messages between him and reporter showing what they call mutual flirtation. >> what was withheld was the beginning of the discussion via text which was a flirtation mostly initiated by her and carried on by her and engaged in by mr. hufnagel. >> hufnagel is on paid leave while he appeals his notice of termination. the university released a statement today saying there was nothing preventing him from submitting anything he thought would support his position. and it remains unclear why he apparently withheld hundreds of text messages he now believes to be relevant. the california supreme court handed down a ruling today

siding with workers demanding a place to sit. employees at the cvs drugstore chain and chase bank sued. justices ruled employers must provide seating when the nature of the work permits the use of seats. an attorney for the workers says the decision is a victory for all workers. lighting up may soon be more difficult in san rafael. smoking is already prohibited in public places. now city officials want to snuff out an exception that allows people to smoke while passing through the downtown area. they also want to ban e-cigarette smoking in public places. san rafael city council meets at 7:00 p.m. tonight to discuss these new regulations. new answers for b.a.r.t. in its effort to solve the electrical issue that's damaging trains between the north concord and pittsburg bay point stations. todays operated along the line. b.a.r.t. did tests over the weekend but didn't get answers. the problem damaged 50 train cars. a big day on caltrain for

hitt. >> reporter: a lands mark movement on both coasts. new york and california's governors signing legislation to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour. >> creating a little tiny balance in a system that every day becomes more unbalanced. >> reporter: in california, the current $10 wage will gradually increase over the year to $15 in 2022. in new york, it's regional. new york city workers will get $15 an hour by the end of 2018 with slower increases elsewhere in the state. >> we're rebuilding the middle class for a new economy today. >> reporter: the change comes after years of protests by workers across the country. >> yeah, we made it. we broke through. we got it. >> this means i'll be able to better provide for my baby. >> reporter: but critics argue the wage hike will only force small businessowners to lay of employees. experts believe this movement will likely catch on in other parts of the country where it is more expensive to live. >> i think you can see more of this along the coast.

we've already seen it in some cities such as seattle, maybe in places such as massachusetts. you could see something like this. >> reporter: some businessowners say they'll end up passing this wage hike onto customers by raising prices. both states there are clauses to slow down the wage increase if it harms the economy. brandi hitt, abc news los angeles. a burlingame-based airliner officially has a new owner today. alaska airlines is buying virgin america for $2.6 billion. with a total transaction value of $4 billion. >> yeah, abc 7 news anchor kristen sze is here to explain the deal and what it means for travelers. >> reporter: ama, dan, this is a big deal for bay area travelers. virgin america's main hub is at sfo but this is also a big deal for the airline industry. one that send virgin america's shares soaring today up $16 or nearly 42% on news of the merger. after a bidding war, airline upstart virgin america which launched nine years ago agreed

to sell to seattle-based alaska air. the combined airline will use the alaska name. it will offer 1,200 daily departu departures, the fifth biggest carrier in the u.s. and biggest on the west coast with hubs in san francisco and los angeles. alaska gains a foot hold in airports on the east coast like new york and d.c. >> by bringing them together, we're creating the premiere airline for people who live anywhere on the west coast. >> the two airlines say their cultures are a good fit in terms of customer service and low fares and just today virgin america was named best airline for the fourth year in a row by the national airline quality rating. alaska came in fifth. what about the quirky fun image virgin america shaped for itself, like this tweet today showing the "s" of the giants cap on the plane. i asked twitter followers if they have a message for alaska. hire are a few comments. one says "don't change the wonderfulness that is virgin america." and steven urges "we cannot lose

>> reporter: as i drove in here this afternoon, it was around 2:30, i was stunned because i saw rows and rows of tents and canopies and people were out here in force. they're getting ready for the a's and the white sox on opening day. want to focus on one group of fans in particular. i have to say the barbecue smells so good as we walked up to get some video of them. they call themselves true a's fans uncensored. they tell me they have 3,000 members, they even have business cards they give out. many of them took the day off just to be here to go to the a's and white sox game tonight and even though the team really struggled last year, i mean, they were last in the american league, expectations not super high, to be quite honest, in 2016 but this group is committed to coming out here to support their athletics. >> love tailgating so much, we had an off season in november tailgate because we were going through withdrawal. so here we are. our first one of the season. we are ready. we are ready.

it's the end of an era for bay area newspapers. both the "san jose mercury nose" and "oaklands tribune" printed their last edition. they're not going away but being re-branded. the tribune will be at the news stand tomorrow as the new "east bay times." "san jose mercury news" will merge with the "san mateo county times" and will be known simply as "the mercury news." a new art display in san francisco comes with a very serious message. abc 7 news was at civic center plaza as these five enormous inflatable rabbits were being set up, stand up to 23 feet high. they're not there to provide a

to the marine mammal center from highway 37. former inmates of sonoma county jail joined a lawsuit against the sheriff and county government. there are a half dozen plaintiffs in that suit that we first reported on last october. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live in santa rosa with a story you'll see only on abc 7. vic? >> reporter: this is the lawsuit that was filed by that second group of former inmates. they are joining the two inmates who sued last fall. and tonight, you'll also see video of a form of behavioral counseling which their attorney says is sanctioned by the sheriffs office. now the sheriff referred us to the county administrator, but our calls to them have yet to be returned. >> guys in black came in and they were all wearing masks hitting us and calling us [ bleep ] and telling us that it's their house and that they can beat us. >> reporter: danny banks was one of two former prisoners at santa rosa jail who sued the sheriff last october. some two dozen inmates wrote

letters saying they, too, were systemically beaten one day last may. all they did, they say, was protest what they felt was an unjustified beating of another prisoner. >> my face was so swollen shut, i couldn't see out of it. >> reporter: now cabrera, jesus lopez, and two other former inmates have joined the suit. their attorney showed us video shot by a deputy when cabrera was taken outside for what was called yard counseling. >> a group of guards dressed in black wearing masks and one case at least carrying sht shotguns and other weapons, we'll pull you out of your cell, tie you, beat you, a human pretzel, emotionally, psychologically degrade you. >> reporter: we obtained this video today of danny banks, one of the two original plaintiffs. he, too, said he was giving yard counseling. >> i can't do this. >> reporter: jesus lopez is so emotionally distraught, he had a hard time telling us what happened to him, but he did tell

york, it was a busy morning for emergency crews responding to wreck after wreck, killing at least one. in whiteout conditions overnight leading to this nasty pileup along i-88 involving 20 vehicles and injuring more than 30 people. in pittsburgh, it wasn't slow but ice and slush. ground crews had to clear off the field for the pirates' season opener. from indianapolis, to baltimore, and new york city, millions are still recovering from a windy weekend. winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour in some areas, knocking out power, collapsing buildings, and toppling trees leaving streeters littered with detrbris and home damaged. this is the scene in east orange, new jersey, homeowners picking up the damage. just when you think you've seen it all from strong winds and rain and snow, we're now being told to brace for a bitter cold blast and as wild as it sounds, according to forecasters, this is a typical april here in the

oakland. >> abc 7 news director larry biel is live at oakland coliseum with a preview of tonight's big game. >> reporter: you were out here over the weekend for the bay bridge series. it's spectacular. we get set for a's and white sox tonight. instant challenge for the a's is their starting pitcher, they lost sonny gray to food poising and found out earlier in the day. rich will be the starting pitcher tonight. i'll show you video of sonny gray. this is a real problem for the a's. real disappointment because sonny is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. a's coming off of a very disappointing 2015. really wanted sonny gray on the mound to get off to a strong start in this four-game series against the white sox. we'll see what rich is able to do. maybe this is best. no time to think about it. just go out and throw. we talked with manager bob melvin and he said he expects some extra jitters on opening night. >> opening day is a holiday,

officials are searching for thieves who targeted the san francisco make a fi-a-wish foundation. two men walking out with a scooter donated by giants right fielder hunter pence. here's abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson. >> reporter: take one look at the always and know make-a-wish is a special place, this helps fund the dreams of children battling life-threatening illnesses. saturday night two men broke in through the fire door and spent an hour ransacking the office. >> i think they're going to feel badly if they have a conscience at all. >> there's karma in this world, i believe that. >> reporter: the men stuffed backpacks with ipads and other donated goods. >> that's a collector's item that they didn't take. >> reporter: surveillance video shows one man walking out with an autographed scooter donated by giants right fielder hunter

for months, someone has been shooting a b.b. gun at cars. now it is people being targeted. >> emergency room, they said, were you on esparia? why do you ask? because somebody else got shot. >> scary. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze. what police think started as a prank is turning dangerous in san leandro. this weekend four more cars shot on teagarden street. b.b. gun vandals have been hitting the city for months and these are just some of the locations. but now vandals are targeting people. they shot one man in the head. abc 7 news reporter elissa harrington spoke to that victim today. how is he doing? >> reporter: well, kristen, he had to go to the emergency room and still has part of that pellet stuck in his forehead. the victim wants to get the word out and catch the people responsible before somebody else gets seriously hurt. >> i didn't know really how bad it was. pretty frightening. >> reporter: scott bradley shows us part of a pellet stuck in his

forehead. he says he was hit in a drive-by shooting the night of march 25th outside the first united methodist church on bancroft avenue in san leandro. >> i felt this huge smack and it was pretty heavy duty and so i went, i think they're shooting. i went down to the ground and said, they're shooting. >> reporter: bradley felt a lot of blood and knew he'd been shot. he shared this picture. bloody and scared. he went to the hospital and got an x-ray. medical workers there told him somebody else came in with a similar wound from a b.b. that same night. >> crazy. that's what. it's kind of surreal. it's hard to believe that people are doing that. >> reporter: vandals wielding b.b. and pellet guns have been terrorizing the community for the past few months. in just a week and a half, police have responded to reports of b.b.s blowing out car windows and damaging store fronts. at least three people have been hit. >> we don't want the violence to continue. we don't want anybody to get
