forehead. he says he was hit in a drive-by shooting the night of march 25th outside the first united methodist church on bancroft avenue in san leandro. >> i felt this huge smack and it was pretty heavy duty and so i went, i think they're shooting. i went down to the ground and said, they're shooting. >> reporter: bradley felt a lot of blood and knew he'd been shot. he shared this picture. bloody and scared. he went to the hospital and got an x-ray. medical workers there told him somebody else came in with a similar wound from a b.b. that same night. >> crazy. that's what. it's kind of surreal. it's hard to believe that people are doing that. >> reporter: vandals wielding b.b. and pellet guns have been terrorizing the community for the past few months. in just a week and a half, police have responded to reports of b.b.s blowing out car windows and damaging store fronts. at least three people have been hit. >> we don't want the violence to continue. we don't want anybody to get seriously hurt.

>> reporter: investigators released surveillance video of the suspect car. it's an older suv with a black or missing gas cap. the suspects appear to be in their early 20s. the damage from this spring of vandalism has totaled more than $60,000. in san leandro, elissa harrington, abc 7 news. a palo alto man faces felony charges for allegedly pulling a knife and firing a pellet gun at construction workers last friday. 25-year-old wesley ramsly was arrested at an apartment complex. investigators say he was upset by loud construction noise. he's been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats. peta is offering a $15,000 reward to help nab the person who killed five animals near the berkeley marina last month. the animals included a cat, opossum and three raccoons. b.b. pellets inside several of the bodies were present. an oakland woman whose brother died in police custody

wants officers be put on trial even though she settled with the city. in july 2013, ana called police to her home on east 21st street. she said it sounded like someone was in the house. she shared with her 51-year-old brother, hernan. officers didn't find an intruder but handcuffed the brother which led to a struggle. police body camera video obtained by "the east bay times" shows the whole incident. as officers held him down, he can be heard saying, "i can't breathe." and "you're killing me" over and over until he loses consciousness. ana saw the video before the settlement but said her siblings in colombia did not see it until after they agreed to the settlement. >> it was too painful for them. i see the video before. we never agreed to do the -- >> ana also said there was a miscommunication using skype and said the agreement should be

nullified. a toxicology report shows her brother had a heart condition and cocaine in his system. the system has requested any motion for trial be denied. a scare today at santa clara high school where a fire broke out on campus. see the billowing smoke coming up from the school's snack shack near the football field. students posted video and pictures on social media. this happened just after 1:00 this afternoon and forced the evacuation of the entire campus. no word yet on what caused the fire. right now, police are searching for the person who booked e abandoned this truck in the san leandro creek. offices are gathering evidence. they're not sure if it was stolen. the truck was on fire. it's now charred as you can see and severely damaged. a towing crew will have to pull it out. alameda county fire tweeted pictures during the response. see smoke pouring out of the trees. firefighters said flames spread from the truck to vegetation near several homes. they were able to get it under control in time.

>> thank goodness. sonoma county, something you don't see every day, a sea lion trying to cross a freeway. it happened this morning on highway 37. corralling it, however, was not easy. stubborn animal. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard was on the scene of this dramatic rescue. >> reporter: dan, we are learning more about the wayward sea lion pup. his name is schooldaze. d-a-z-e. he's got a name because he's been rescued before by the marine mammal centers. vets there trying to determine at is causing him to show up at odd locations like this one, highway 37 near sonoma raceway. and today it was quite a sight. sky 7 hd was overhead as a rescue mission unfolded. the goal, trying to keep a curious sea lion pup out of traffic. but it wasn't easisy. a long game of cat and mouse. the male pup in and out of the water determined to cross highway 37. >> we just kept an eye on him as he swam through the tried to c

onto the bank and approach the freeway, we distracted him and kept him back into the water. >> reporter: wardens and chp officers used boards to to rcor the pup into a temporary dog crate. the sea lion pup was finally safe inside. >> these animals, it's not that uncommon for them. california sea lions are kind of crafty, go where they want to. >> reporter: this guy certainly did. last december, a 500 pound elephant sale hopped out of san pablo bay and tried to cross the very same highway until she could be coaxed back into the water. why here? no one really knows. >> we haven't had many get stranded in this area so fingers crossed we don't have more any time soon. >> reporter: in sonoma county, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. the owner of a chihuahua known as the bay bridge dog has yet to come toward. the dog nicknamed ponch is in good health. workers tweeted the video of the little chihuahua getting lots of

attention and affection. the little dog led chp officers on this chase over the western span of the bay bridge yesterday morning. look at it go. right? stopping traffic along the way. an officer captured the entire incident on video. the uversity of california systems says it offered admission to significantly more in-state students for next fall than last year. officials say offers to in-state graduating seniors increased by 15% this year to more than 66,000. offers went out to more latino and african-american students as well. the uc system has come under fire for admitting large numbers of applicants from other states and countries who pay higher tuition. just last week, a state audit urged a cap on the number of nonresidents admitted to the uc system. well a historic day in california. governor brown signing the state's new minimum wage law, one that will give low-paid workers a raise. year after year until it hits $15 an hour. in the south bay, some are saying that's not fast enough,

however. while others are saying not so fast. abc 7 news reporter david louie is live from a cherry stand in sun snyvale with the story. >> reporter: the argument can be made that $10.30 an hour, minimum wage right now in sunnyvale and san jose, just doesn't cut it. however, some shopkeepers are saying $15 is too much, too fast. small businessowners deborah olson opposes efforts to get to a $15 minimum wage in just 2 years. her family-owned cherry stand believed to be the last one in the valley where orchards once stood is already reeling from dealing with a $10.30 wage. >> i've seen a 10% increase in my labor from last year and i am now, everybody's working harder, i'm hiring less people, they're not getting hours they used to. >> reporter: sunnyvale and san jose this month are both considering a $15 wage by 2018. which could put pressure on surrounds cities. right now there's a patchwork quilt of wage laws. mountain view, palo alto, and

santa kplclara at $11 currently. san jose, sunnyvale, $10.30. the remaining cities at $10. the big increase can be justified according to san jose state's scott myers lipton. >> we had an increase of rent of 50% in that same time period. so in that type of situation, the increase, asking for the $15 sooner is obviously, think, a powerful argument. >> reporter: adjustments in the wage law are tied to the national cost of living index which puts workers here at a s disadvanta disadvantage. >> you see fuel costs going down, but what's not factored in there is the high cost of living for northern california or the bay area. >> reporter: she hopes all ten south bay cities will adopt the same wage formula for uniform y uniformity. in sunnyvale, david louie, abc 7 news. >> you know why kristen is grinning from ear to ear all day

"san jose mercury news" is also changing, be known simply as "the mercury news." both are merging with smaller bay area news group newspapers. san jose is a step closer to getting a high speed rail stop. the city received about $600,000 to help add high-speed rail service at the duridon station. the plan featured a mixed-use development that will serve as a regional hub of housing, jobs, transportation and entertainment. high-speed rail is expected to run there in 2025. the demand for palo alto's new tesla 3 keeps growing. the model 3. ceo elon musk announced worldwide orders hit 276,000 over the weekend. he tweeted that even he was surprised by the high demand. musk said he was anticipating reservations to be quarter to half of what they turned out to be. two doctors from ucsf will play a key role in vice

president biden's cure for cancer. mitch burger, neurological surgery, and provost jeff lustone part of a blue ribbon panel that will advise the national institutes of health on cancer research. biden, whose son died of brain cancer, is leading the administration'se esffort for a cure. this summer, the most promising cancer research that is available. listen up, wells fargo customers, you could be getting cash back. >> "7 on your side's" michael finney is here with this story. we're all ears. >> longtime wells fargo bank debit card holders may have money coming their way. ten years ago the bank lost a class action lawsuit that acc e accused it its misleading debit card holders, accused of sub trakting the highest charges first on the debit card followed by lower charges. it had the effect of multiplying the number of overdrafts each of which carried a $25 to $35 fee.

for about a decade now, the bank has been fighting the ruling. they lost. and today the supreme court let stand a $203 million verdict. i'll keep track of this and report when a payment plan is finalized. automakers enjoyed another solid month of new vehicle sales in march, but there are concerns about rising discounts and slowing sales. auto companies sold more than 1.5 car million cars last month. ford sales topped the list with more than a quarter million vehicles sold. general motors came in behind ford but sold more than 250,000 cars and trucks. now, these near-record sales mean more used cars will be available and right now, prices are down about 3%. they're expected to drop to 4%. for the fourth year in a row, virgin america is at the top of the list for airline quality. that's according to the 26th annual national airline quality rating report. it was released today just as

♪ ♪ (laughing) there's nothing like making their day. except making sure their tomorrow is taken care of too. financial guidance while you're mastering life. from chase. so you can. some incredible video out of mexico. it's the eruption of a volcano that exploded yesterday spewing incandescent rocks and ash into the sky. mexico's national disaster prevention center says the plume was over a mile high. pretty spectacular to watch, though. the volcano is about 50 miles southeast of mexico city.

and is one of the country's most active volcanos. >> that's stunning to see. californians did a pretty good job of saving water last month. residents used 24% less water in february which is just about shy of the state's mandated 25% conservation market. not shabby at all. state water resources board says californiaens rose to the occasion to save pressure water. in the bay area most residents are saving more than teir city's conservation requirement. a major upgrade began today to boost the power of the world's brightest x-ray laser. it is right here in the bay area. a stanford-run federal lab in menlo park teamed up with four others including the lawrence berkeley national lab in annest to take x-ray science to the next level. the project will add a second x-ray laser beam that's 10,000 times brighter than the current run and fires 8,000 times faster. it would be used for the experiments to improve our understanding of how things work on the atomic level. all right. in case you didn't know it,

injury and let the duck go. it just waddled off to a nearby pond. >> it took a big effort today to rescue at least ten ducklings that fell into a storm train in novato. >> fire, police and marin humane officers helped reunite the babies with their mother. >> placed them into a box, walked over to the creek behind the shopping center right here, and we shook the box to make the ducklings make their little peeping sound and then mother stuck her head up in the grass and had three others so she had a total of 13 ducklings. and we just released them and they went running back to mom. >> he says these calls about ducklings are very common in the spring. >> we ask who foots the bill for the rescue? it will be too cliche so i won't say it. >> all's well that ends well. >> of course. world news with david muir is coming up next. >> i'm dan ashley. for spencer christian, michael finn
