good morning. i'm reena ninan. >> and i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following on this thursday morning on "world news now." >> president obama will argue his case for supreme court nominee merrick garland today in front of a very interested audience. more on the president's uphill battle coming up. a teenage girl in texas has died from injuries linked to an exploding air bag made by takata. she's the tenth known death in the u.s. from a takata inflater and the 11th worldwide. more than 100 people have been injured. oklahoma's governor declared a state of emergency in ten new counties. wind-driven wildfires have

scorched hundreds of square miles, destroyed structures and forced people from their homes. and the tributes are pouring in for country music legend merle haggard. he died at age 79 yesterday, which was also his birthday. dolly parton calling him one of the greatest writers and singers of all time. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, april 7th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning. we're going to get started this half hour with the president's uphill battle to get a hearing on capitol hill for supreme court nominee merrick garland. >> today he will argue his case at an old stomping ground in chicago while republicans on capitol hill step up their stonewalling strategy. abc's arlette saenz has details. >> reporter: president obama hits the road today to make a supreme court sales pitch. the president will travel to the university of chicago, where he taught constitutional law for over a decade. that's where he'll make his case for confirming merrick garland. three weeks after nominating him to the nation's highest court.

>> i ask that they confirm merrick garland now to the supreme court. he is the right man for the job. he deserves to be confirmed. >> reporter: garland's nomination remains embroiled in politics in the senate. the 63-year-old harvard educated federal judge is making the rounds on capitol hill. meeting with senators on both sides of the aisle. >> how do you feel, judge garland? >> reporter: over the past 20 days, garland met with 14 democrats, but only 3 republicans. senate republican leadership is holding firm on their vow not to hold hearings or a vote on his nomination. >> i think it's safe to say that there will be not be hearings or votes. >> reporter: two gop senators who met with garland disagree. >> the meeting left me more convinced than ever that the process should proceed. >> reporter: democrats argue other republicans would feel the

same if they agreed to meet with garland. >> i think that's one of the problems that the republicans have. they just know that when they sit down, get to know him and understand his background, it's virtually impossible to say this man is not qualified. >> reporter: garland's outreach to republicans will continue next week. senate judiciary chairman chuck grassley has invited garland to breakfast. grassley says it's just a courtesy visit and he'll continue to oppose holding a hearing. garland will meet with four other gop senators including two facing tough re-election battles in their home states. kendis and reena. >> thanks to arlette in d.c. donald trump is rallying supporters in his home state of new york with a new wave of attacks against ted cruz. trump packed a 10,000 seat venue and reminded the crowd of earlier comments made by cruz about new york values. supporters who couldn't get in faced off with hundreds of anti-trump protesters outside, but police managed to keep things calm there. as for cruz, well, he was also in new york after his wisconsin

victory reset the race. and he dismissed trump's attacks as a sign that he's falling apart. but some residents in the bronx blasted cruz for his tough immigration policies and he struggled when he was asked to answer a question in spanish, saying as a second generation immigrant he understands the language better than he speaks it. bernie sanders and hillary clinton are going tit-for-tat after his win in wisconsin. sanders drew a massive crowd in philadelphia last night, restating his claim that clinton is getting nervous. he claimed clinton is calling him unqualified, but he said she's the one not qualified to be president. the clinton camp tweeted a response calling sanders' comment a new low, and they denied saying that sanders is not qualified. clinton also criticized sanders on gun control after he said victims of gun crimes should not be able to sue gun manufacturers, sparking outrage from families who filed a wrongful death suit over the sandy hook massacre. a former coal company

executive has been sentenced for mine safety issues which led to the death of 29 miners. former massey energy company ceo don blankenship was given the maximum penalty, one year in prison for conspireing to violate federal safety and health laws at massey's upper big branch mine. clay mullins lost a brother in the mine explosion. >> he's not sorry. he's sorry he got caught. but he's not sorry for the 29 lives that he took. >> blankenship is expected to report to a federal prison to begin his sentence in the coming weeks. his attorneys say they'll appeal the conviction. a school police officer in san antonio, texas, is on paid administrative leave after cell phone video of him surfaced slamming a 12-year-old student to the ground. students can be heard in the background asking if the girl was okay. the girl was suspended for two days. the police are investigating the incident and say there's no tolerance for excessive use of force. and in an extreme case of

road rage, look at this, a southern california driver says he was rear-ended by a chauffeur driving an suv then attacked by the same chauffeur with a crowbar. the drivers says the chauffeur had been tailgating him so he got off the freeway and that's when he says the driver deliberately smashed his window, then drove off. police are investigating but so far no arrests made. turning now to a very different kind of rage, in the operating room a patient secretly recorded her doctor in the o.r. while she was unconscious on the operating table. when she woke up, she was stunned at the comments that were made about her while she was under. abc's matt gutman has her story. >> reporter: when you're going under the knife, you don't expect cutting comments like this. >> you see her belly button? [ laughter ] >> reporter: you can hear the medical practitioners cracking themselves up during surgery on a houston woman named ethyl easter. >> this is precious over here, and precious over here. >> reporter: an apparent reference to the title character in the film, "precious." easter had hidden a recording device in her hair extensions.

in her 20s found at the bottom of a creek winding through university grounds. >> she was walking so close to, like, so many buildings, and there was probably people around. >> reporter: police are calling it a homicide but have not yet identified the woman, and they haven't said whether there is any connection to a student who went missing just days ago. >> i mean, we haven't had something like that happen on campus in the last ten years. >> reporter: law enforcement now stepping up security on campus, with 50 more officers patrolling on foot, bike and horseback. >> be aware of your surrounding at all times. >> reporter: officers urging students to lock their doors, walk without ear buds and travel in pairs. >> i got my friend to come pick me up last night from the stadium instead of walking home or taking the bus. >> reporter: austin police have now taken over this investigation, and the university president urging students to be extra cautious at night and use well-lit sidewalks. kayna whitworth, abc news, austin. in maryland a school bus crash sent eight students and a driver to the hospital. look at that scene. the investigators are trying to figure out how the bus ended up like that, on its side. one of the students said he felt the bus slide and then flip.

none of the injuries, we should point out, is life-threatening. a tenth person died from injuries blamed on takata air bags. a texas teenager killed in a crash after the air bag in her 200 civic honda ruptured. honda says it sent the owner a recall notice but the repairs were never made. more than 28 million of those inflaters are under recall. a united flight to san francisco was forced to return to hawaii when the pilots became concerned about how much fuel was on board. it's unusual but not an unheard of aviation issue. abc's david kerley explains. >> reporter: this united 777, forced to return to honolulu. >> united 724, cleared visual approach. >> cleared for visual. >> reporter: for the 264 passengers on board, it was a four-hour flight that ended right where it started. the flight took off for san francisco sunday, but about two hours out, the pilots realize they're in a condition called overburn, using more fuel than expected. so, they decide to turn around.
