live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." good afternoon, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm kristen sze. ama daetz has the day off. we begin in san francisco with a police shooting. a man was shot and killed near 18th street. there are differing reports about what really happened. >> including whether he was threatening officers with a knife. vic lee is live at the scene with details. vic? >> reporter: the shooting happened right over here on shotwell street. a shooting which some make comparisons with the officer involved shooting of mario woods last december. he too had a knife. this time was a homeless man who lived in one of those blue tents. >> there was a person waving a

large kitchen knife. >> reporter: the man was shot here by officers responding from a call from a homeless outreach team, man with a knife. >> the knife had a 10 to 12-inch played. >> reporter: police say they shot bean bags at the man but he kept charging. two officers, one of them a sergeant, fired. >> we have it i peers four extended casings from the bean bag and seven casings. >> reporter: seven bullet casings. the man was rushed to the hospital. >> all he did was play with his soccer ball. >> reporter: stephanie and john knew the man as jose. they were outside their tent when officers arrived and they say they saw everything. >> the knife was up on his hip the whole time. he didn't have no knife in his hand when the officers was around him. >> reporter: he says he saw bean bags hitting jose first.

>> he was going in circles, and that's when the sergeant pulled his gun out and opened fire on him. >> reporter: the couple says the knife was tucked in his belt. >> he fell and that's when the knife fell out. and he hit the ground. >> reporter: the man was rushed to the hospital. he died early this afternoon. i'm sure the police will have more to say in the days to come. the shooting comes ironically the day after the police commission met at city hall where they discussed arming officers with nonlethal weapons such as tasers. a brief scare at an office building this afternoon after a report of someone inside with a gun. sky 7 hd was over the medical office after somebody saw a man with a rifle inside. that led to a brief lockdown. it turns out it was just a bb

gun. the county sheriff tweeted this picture of it. it's not clear why anybody would bring a bb gun to the office. sky 7 hd is live over breaking news in campbell where a major gas line break has forced some evacuations, as well as a major traffic tie-up. you can see the affected enter section right down there on camden avenue near highway 17. a construction crew was digging into the asphalt when they hit a two-inch steel gas line. c at least two businesses, a shell gas station and a store, have been evacuated. pg&e is on the scene to cap the leak. it could take several more hours. we'll bring you any developments during this news cast and through twitter. just follow "abc7 news" bay area. the one-day blast of heat is over. this is a live look outside. >> you can see the clouds pushing in. a cooler look today and some rain could be on the way. spencer christian is here now

saturday at the charity's office. pence had donated it a while back. police arrested three suspects earlier this week. >> you feel so violated because it's so wrong to steal any way, let alone from a children's charity. >> and for their part, the giants donated five ipads to help replace ones taken during the break-in. baseball on the other side of the bay, white sox finishing up their series this afternoon. nice day for tailgating. no score until the 6th when abreu hits the two-run home run. the white sox win 6-1 as the a's drop three of their first four. a's and giants' fans, share your team pride on social media using the #abc7now. you can expect a traffic mess tonight.

it's already begun as games start to wrap up in san francisco and in oakland. we are in the 7th in san francisco, but you can see the heavy spots on the map in red, leading into the city, of course. in addition to the giants and the a's, the warriors play at 7:30 and in the south bay, the sharks hit the ice at the same time. cal assistant basketball coach jan huffneagle has resigned. he had been on paid leave since accusations surfaced. today's resignation ends his appeal in the case. police are looking for a man who has been posing as a stanford university student or employee who may be linked to a series of laptop thefts. at least 72 thefts have been reported to campus police since september. the computers were taken from offices, and even student residents. san francisco supervisors are trying to beef up their controversial sanctuary city law. >> it currently bans city police

and deputies from holding most undocumented immigrants for federal immigration officials. >> eric thomas is live at city hall in san francisco. eric? >> reporter: the ordinance passed out of committee just a short time ago. it will head to the full board of supervisors for their consideration. it further restricts how city police react with i.c.e. and other government issues when it comes to undocumented immigrants. supervisors took to the steps of city hall to argue putting a fire wahl between police and immigration and customs enforcement is more than just a good idea. >> the separation of local law enforcement and immigration enforcement is vital. >> reporter: he says immigrant communities would no faith or trust in police without that separation. he points to the case of pedro figueroa, an immigrant who went into a station to retrieve his stolen car and walked out in the

arms of i.c.e. agents. >> he said, i asked for help but instead i was harmed by the police. it's something really hard for me to share. >> reporter: this new ordinance would not only prevent police from obtaining immigrants but prohibit them providing information to the feds unless the person was convicted of a violent felony within the last seven years. >> we want to set one clear standard for when we will allow law enforcement to talk with i.c.e. >> reporter: san francisco's immigration law controversy went national last year, when an immigrant who had been deported five times shot and killed kate steinle at pier 14. gop presidential candidate donald trump referenced that in one of his anti-immigration rants. >> we saw trumped up hysteria. that affected people in san francisco. >> reporter: but this local activist says this is not a place for local government.

this is "abc7 news." >> this is a bizarre end the a wild chase in southern california. two burglary suspects led police on a chase that included a brief pause for the driver to do some donuts? this is in the middle of a chase, which went over multiple freeways and through the hollywood area. the driver was even waving and yelling at people near the hollywood walk of fame. a spike strip was deployed but it didn't end there. they were finally arrested in a

neighborhood, but not before they ended up taking a few selfies with residents there. a dump truck lost control and slammed into a home's garage, knocking it off its foundation. janet o has the details. >> all of a sudden it was this tremendous crash. >> reporter: they are walking inthis morning to deal with the aftermath of the crash. >> the next thing is for inspectors to come and look at the stability of what is left of the garage. >> reporter: early this morning, fire, police, and the city public works department were able to get the truck hauled away without causing any damage to the homes below. that's where they live. this is what the situation first looked like yesterday afternoon, when the dump truck carrying hot asphalt slammed into the garage. >> it was unbelievable. >> reporter: the driver somehow lost control to pave the road.

the subcontractors were hired by pg&e after crews just installed a new gas line in the neighborhood. >> that's a big truck like that. they lost control. >> reporter: the driver of the truck managed to break out, breaking his arm in the process. the city and pg&e are now conducting a thorough investigation. pg&e saying they apologize to residents and will work to make things right. >> we're waiting to get our lives back together. it's going to take a while, for sure. >> reporter: the road remains closed and crews will be escorting residents in and out of the area. janet o, "abc7 news." a head-on crash between a ford pickup truck and a big rig hauling wine left one person dead. it happened at 7:00 a.m. outside of petaluma. the ford pickup drifted across the center line and right into the path of an oncoming big rig.

the pickup driver was taken to the hospital where he died. his passenger was hurt. u.s. department of housing and urban development secretary julian castro is in the bay area. and right now he's preparing to speak at uc berkeley. "abc7 news" was at san francisco city hall where he met with bay area leaders, including mayor ed lee along with the san jose and oakland mayors. the main topic of discussion was expanding affordable housing opportunities across the bay area. >> the bay area is a good example of a place that has seen a lot of economic progress. at the same time, has a lot of families who are struggling to pay the rent and find a decent place to live. >> the bay area was one of five communities chosen to lead a national conversation about how to create economic opportunities so everybody has a chance to succeed. the department of housing has pledged $11 billion over the next ten years to address the problem. fewer americans sought

unemployment help last week. the labor department says weekly applications for jobless benefits fell 9,000 to 267,000. the figures point to a stable job market with steady hiring. mortgage rates slid to their lowest level in 14 months. the average rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage fell to 3.89%. the average rate on 15-year fixed rate dropped to 2.88%. tesla motors says worldwide preorders for its new model 3 electric car have hit 325,000. that announcement from the ceo coming a week after he unveiled the car at an event in l.a. customers have to put down a refundable $1,000 deposit to order car, which starts at $35,000. the number of orders is unprecedented when you compare it to other electric car sales

worldwide. nissan sold 211,000 leafs since the year 2010. so this car is a game changer potentially. >> it could lead to more infrastructure and charging stations. great day for a convertible if you have one. >> spencer christian is here with the accuweather forecast. >> cooled down a lot since yesterday. we have a few clouds around, but rain is holding off for a while. here's live doppler 7 hd. you can see the outline of the clouds. here's the view at the golden gate bridge. showers are likely tomorrow and saturday. we'll have an unsettled pattern sunday through tuesday with another rainstorm likely next wednesday. the approaching system, however, the one coming in tomorrow and saturday, ranks one on our storm impact scale. a storm of light intensity. most areas will get between quarter and half an emplg of rainfall. isolated thunder is possible with this system.

5:00 tomorrow afternoon, there will be showers and perhaps locally heavy downpours moving up through the east bay, south bay, parts of the peninsula. that means not great driving or commuting conditions late tomorrow. that rainfall will continue into early saturday morning and then through the day on saturday it will taper off into pockets of showers. and we are projecting rainfall totals by 11:00 saturday night of generally between quarter and half an inch of rain. over in livermore, could be close to an inch of rain. on the coast, only a few hund d hundredeths of an inch. uniform range of lows and tomorrow's highs will range from low 60s at the coast to upper 60s around the bay. upper 60s to near 70 inland. now let's look ahead to next week. that next storm will start our forecast animation next wednesday morning at 12:00 a.m. by 5:00 next wednesday morning,

loif from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." >> here are the headlines at 4:30. a homeless man dies from a police shooting in the mission district in san francisco. sky 7 hd was over the scene as it happened this morning. a member of the city's homeless outreach team called police to report a man with a knife. police say he charged them with a 10 to 12-inch kitchen knife. in concord, this dental assistant is accused of molesting an 8-year-old girl inside the office.

coming up at 5:00, laura anthony tells us why investigators say there could be more victims. also at 5:00, chris nguyen will join us live from this gas line break in campbell. crews are working to fix it right now. and a disturbing video out of texas shows a school officer slamming a sixth grade girl to the ground. the 12-year-old claims she was knocked unconscious and bruised. now there's an excessive force investigation under way. brandi hitt has the story. >> reporter: 12-year-old janessa valdez says she was trying to avoid a fight with a student, when the security officer threw her face down. >> he grabbed he around my arms so i couldn't move my arms. >> reporter: do you think you were knocked out? >> of course. >> reporter: that incident as

rose middle school is under investigation. >> i was upset. he didn't have to do that. >> reporter: valdez says a large bump formed on her head, her eye still bruised a week later. the school district says it only learned about what happened after the video was posted online. >> it's alarming to see this. while we want all the details, i want people to know that excessive force will not be tolerated. >> the idea is to deescalate the situation. that's not always possible but that's the approach. >> reporter: the officer has been placed on administrative leave and represented by the combined law enforcement associations of texas, which said in a statement, the officer fully intends to cooperate with the investigation. valdez says she was suspended from school even though she says she was not in a fight. brandi hitt, abc news, los

angeles. brussels police today released new video of a third suspect in last month's bombing attacks. new surveillance tape shows the man moments after the bombing and the route he took as he left the area. he was with the two suicide bombers at the airport. police say he ditched his white jacket and vanished. at least 32 people died in those attacks. now to the race for the white house. ted cruz is predicting a big upset in new york. and a war of words between the democrats. here's megan hughes. >> reporter: bernie sanders on the attack. >> i'm not going to get beaten up or lied about. >> reporter: at a news conference in philadelphia, sanders pointing to media articles claiming hillary clinton called him unqualified, a statement she never actually made. now he's directing that critique at her. >> are you qualified to be president of the united states when you're raising millions of dollars from wall street?

>> i don't know why he's saying that, but i will take bernie sanders over donald trump or ted cruz any time. >> reporter: clinton trying to take the high road and calling the comments silly, before getting on a new york subway at yankees' stadium. this the same week that sanders in an interview with the "new york daily news" said the subway still took tokens instead of cards and had trouble answering questions about executing his own polies. and donald trump had family on hand at a tuesday rally in long island, hoping to deliver him a victory at home. >> my father will make america great again. >> reporter: trump hammering ted cruz for statements about new york values he made back in january. >> i've got this guy standing over there looking at me, talking about new york values with scorn on his face, with hatred of new york. >> reporter: cruz says his comments were referring to liberals. at a new york town hall, he says he's expecting to do better than

most predict. >> an interesting thing has happened in the last couple of weeks. we have seen this race nationally turn. >> reporter: a recent poll shows donald trump up more than 30 points in new york. he's even taking time off the campaign trail and has no scheduled events until sunday. megan hughes, abc news, washington. a new poll shows 7 in 10 americans have unfavorable views of donald trump. he's even losing support from his most loyal voting bloc, whites without a college education. 65% have a negative opinion of trump. and more than 60% of registered republicans say they definitely wouldn't vote for trump in the general election. a massive jump in the number of fbi background checks for gun purchases. the bureau conducted more than 7 million background checks, 36% more than last year. the spike likely came in

a little 9-year-old girl is making a name for herself. she's reporting from crime scenes. yes, 9-year-old old. she spoke about her passion today. >> why is crime reporting such a passion of yours? >> i don't know. i just like solving puzzles. >> you're not afraid of going to a crime scene? >> no, not at all. >> she got a tip last weekend about a possible murder, just blocks from her house. so she went with her father to the crime scene to report on it and she beat all of the competition. then after she posted her report, she got a lot of negative comments with some people suggests she should be playing with dolls, not trying to be a reporter. >> well, if you don't like my papers, nobody is forcing you to read it. it annoys me because i'm a girl and because i'm 9 doesn't mean i can't be a reporter. >> her dad is a former "new york daily news" writer.

when this young girl walked into concord police headquarters with a relative and reported something she remembered from her visit here. now police believe there are many more victims. >> this case was brought to us by the courage of an 8-year-old girl. >> reporter: police say it was a young girl and her family that exposed what investigators believe was a serial molester. working as a dental assistant here in concord. police say the suspect recorded with his cell phone. >> it showed him at the dental office. it showed the young girls laying down, where he would pull their pants down, touch their vaginal area and record this. >> reporter: he now sits in jail on $8 million bail. he was arrested for abusing one 8-year-old girl. but police believe there are many more victims based on evidence seized from his home. >> one of the piece of evidences

seized was a cell phone that had several videos of young girls. >> reporter: he worked at this clinic for about a year. typically a dental assistant would monitor a child after a procedure when nitrous oxide was used. the gas makes them more comfortable, less anxious during the procedure but doesn't put them to sleep. >> the clinic takes patients very seriously and is fully cooperating with officials. for the privacy of our patients and all concerned, we cannot comment further. >> reporter: they are asking patients with questions to contact them directly. in concord, laura anthony, "abc7 news." a uc berkeley coach accused of sexually harassing a reporter has resigned. jan huffneagle was a cal assistant basketball coach. he was appealing his firing after an investigation found he tried to lure the female reporter up to his apartment and sent her sexual text messages for months.
