>> the move could further restrict police from turning over undocumented immigrants to the feds. >> abc 7 news anchor eric thomas is live with the story. eric snoo. >> larry and kristen. >> deputies can't detain undocumented immigrants for the feds under most circumstances. under this ordinance, the restrictions will be even tighter. >> the ordinance made it out of committee this afternoon. it now heads to the full board of supervisors. supporters say it would have made a difference in the case of pedro figueroa. an undocumented immigrant picked up by i.c.e., apparently on a tip when he showed up to get his stolen car. he spoke through an interpreter. >> translator: i was harmed by the police. it's hard for me to share. >> it probably would not have made a difference in the killing of kate steinle shot by an

undocumented immigrant who was deported five times. it became an issue when he was picked up on an anti-immigration rants. >> it affected people in san francisco. but the reason the bill wouldn't have kept sanchez from firing the shot that killed kate steinle is in the measure's first sentence. it promotes prohibiting on a federal civil immigration detainer unless that individual has been convicted of a violent felony in the seven years prior. sanchez did not have a history of violence and the seven-year standard is the only one police can use. >> we want to set one clear standard for when we will allow local law enforcement to talk with i.c.e. federal immigration officials. >> not putting a firewall between local police and the feds feeds mistrust between cops and immigrant communities. but this republican activist and immigration specialist says the

city should keep its nose out of it. >> we need the city of san francisco to be doing what they were elected for. repairing the outrageous streets and fixing the problems that the community needs. >> at city hall, eric thomas, abc 7 news. san francisco's district attorney is investigating the police shooting of a homeless man this morning. that began when outreach workers reported a man waving a large knife on shotwell street. police shot bean bags at the man and then officers say the man challenged them, after which they fired seven gunshots. some witnesses dispute the police version. >> the knife was up on his hip the whole time. he didn't have no knife in his hand. when the officers was around him. >> homeless people in the area say it is common for those who live on the street to carry knives for protection. brief scare in kentfield after a report of somebody inside a building with a gun.

we were over the building. it just turns out it was a bb gun. they tweeted this picture of the gun. it's not clear why someone would bring it to the office. an officer is if in the intensive care unit after being intentionally hit by a driver in sacramento this afternoon. officers chased that driver 50 miles to to fairfield where he was taken into custody. investigators say the driver hit the officer using a stolen construction from his truck. backup for the officer arrived quickly. >> an office is nearby the location within a mile, maybe two miles. we were able to respond quickly. this happened in north sacramento. >> the highway patrol believes the motorcycle officer pulled up behind the idle truck on the shoulder of the freeway thinking it was disabled when he was run over at least once. new at 6:00, san francisco-based uber agrees to 35i $10 million to settle a

lawsuit over safety claims. a san francisco judge approved that settlement today. stem frg the claims that it had the best background checks in the business. the settlement requires uber to change the language describing its background checks along with disclosing airport fees more clearly and working with the state to ensure its app measures times and distances accurately. now, if uber does not follow through with the changes, the company will have to pay an extra $15 million. major traffic issues in campo this evening because of a gas leak. a construction crew hit a 2-inch gas line this afternoon on camden avenue near highway 17. chris nguyen is there with an update on the repair progress. chris? >> reporter: kristen, traffic is being let through on both sides of camden avenue. if you look behind me, you can see the crews out here from pg and e making the repairs. that is a huge relief for drivers trying to make it home tonight. let's look at video from sky 7 hd. the leak was first reported just before 1:00 this afternoon.

campbell police tell me that pg and e crews got here pretty fast but took them an hour and a half to pinpoint the exact location of the leak. because of this, two businesses had to be evacuated, including a fast food restaurant. traffic was backed up for several hours. >> we have a traffic problem for us. we put it out on social media, and an alert. we try to get this roadway opened up as fast as we could. >> right in the middle of rush hour. that's why i'm on the bike. i was curious to see what was going on. came down here on the bike. i knew better than to get in my car. >> reporter: again, police had to close off this stretch of camden between south bass couple and the entrance toss highway 17 for about four hours. on the other side of the highway, the backup extended to the santo mass expressway. crews will be making repairs for several hours. we've been told that a pg and e

worker was trying to find out why it was hit in the first place. according to pg and e, that gas line was clearly marked. we're live tonight in gamble. i'm chris nguyen, abc 7 news. back to you. >> chris, thank you. san francisco police returned hunter pence's stolen scooter to make a wish. it was stolen over the weekend from the charity's san francisco office. they've arrested three suspects. pence was impressed with the community's response to the theft. >> you know, when they took from make a wish, how much people wanted to give to make a wish. how many people wanted to do good for this organization that changes lives? >> and that all happened today before the giants home opener at at&t park. >> lot of people showed up early. we found the first fan in line at the willie mays gate.

outside the state capitol today, people gather for crime victim's memorial event. got all wet. the sprinklers unexpectedly came on as governor brown was speaking. he tried to make light of the situation. >> okay. you know what, this will never be forgotten. [ laughter ] >> i think that was the republicans skirting us with water. don't we have any power here? >> the sprinklers are on a timer to water the grass and plants three times a day. people in charge of the project did not reset the timer. east bay dental assistant under arrest tonight accused of

molesting a young girl while she was sedated and recording the whole thing on his cell phone. police believe there may be many more victims. reporter laura anthony is live in concord with the story. laura? >> the police don't know in the dental assistant accused of taking his video uploaded them to the internet or kept them for his own personal use. either way, what he's accused of doing is highly troubling. >> it's disturbing. i mean, you already have -- it's hard enough to bring a child to the dentist. >> concord police have one young victim but believe there are many more. little girls age 6 to 12 molested while they were in the care of a dental ace snt at that concord. crimes police say the suspect recorded with his cell phone. >> in those videos would show a young girl laying there and him pulling down their pants and

video taping their vaginal area. >> he sits in jail on $8 million bail. he was arrested for abusing one 8-year-old girl. police believe there are many more victims based on evidence seized from the antioch home. >> one of pieces of evidence was a cell phone with several videos of young girls. he worked here for about a year. typically a dental assistant would monitor a child after a procedure where nitrous oxide was used. the gas does not put the child to sleep but makes them more comfortable, less anxious during the procedure. officials read a prepared statement. >> la clinica takes the safety of patients seriously. for the privacy of our patients and all concerned, we cannot comment further. >> they're asking patients with questions to contact them directly. anyone who believes they may have been a victim should call

police. in concord, laura anthony, abc 7 news. new developments in a deadly hit and run. the victim is identified as 58-year-old michael o'brien who lived in pacifica. the crash happened yesterday at 1:00 in redwood city. the chp says witnesses report a brown minivan was speeding before slamming into the back of a scion. it overturned several times and the minivan driver took off. the chp is asking for the public's help to find the driver. oakland could be the latest bay area city to implement a soda tax. they want to place a tax on sugar sweetened beverages on november's ballot. the measure is modeled by berkeley voters in 2014 with sodas and other sugary drinks taxed a penny per ounce. it could generate up to $12 million annually toward oakland's diabetes and obesely awareness campaigns. but not everyone is on board. >> to me, this is just another

money grab from the city of oakland. they're not earmarking this money for health issues. it's going into the general fund. >> the tax is opposed by the beverage industry. the tax would hurt small businesses that depend on beverage sales. school lunches in oakland are in line for a tasty makeover. abc 7 news was in west oak leaned as school district officials broke ground on a new nutrition center. the facility will prepare meals for some 20,000 school kids. the emphasis on fresh and local. >> instead of having a package pizza where the students have to scrape the cheese off the plastic, we'll send fresh ingredients to school sites and they'll prepare the food there. >> the center will have a farm where kids can learn about agriculture and grow produce for school meals. the lunches will roll out by 2017. new at 6:00, money troubles for san francisco's gap inc. stock dropped and is down more than 13% in after hours trading.

the company in charge of gap, banana republic and old navy, reported results today that show sales are slipping. the numbers are worse than analysts expected leading to the stock selloff. >>let get to the weather now. one-day blast of heat. we've displayed our weather whipping us in the bay area. >> i'm in that group. it's too hot, it's too hot. today, it's too cold. you don't remember your new york days any more, do you? >> here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. clouds are thick now and temperatures have dropped. they've plummeted since this hour yesterday. it is right now 25 degrees cooler in san francisco and in palo alto than it was at this hour yesterday. 24 degrees cooler right now in santa rosa. all around the bay area. roughly 20 to 25 degrees cooler because of this cooler air mass that has arrived with the clouds in sharp contrast to yesterday's record warmth. it's currently 61 degrees in san

francisco. oakland is 67. 68 in san jose, 62 at morgan hill. 57 at half moon bay. this is the view at the golden gate bridge where clouds get thicker and lower with every passing minute. it's 62 in santa rosa. napa 61. fairfield didn't report but it's there. 64 degrees in concord and livermore 65. on we go to a live view from the abc 7 exploratorium camera at pier 15 looking out over the bay. these are the forecast features. scattered showers. isolated thunder possible with the approaching storm. there's a chance of rain again next week. let's get right down to the storm impact scale. the approaching system ranks 1 on the scale. storm of intensity. it will bring most areas, quarter of an inch to half an inch of rainfall. isolated thunder with the storm. we'll start the forecast in the afternoon by 5:00 tomorrow. in the part of the evening rush. we'll have areas of showers and possibly even isolated heavy

downpours. like showers will continue with periods of rain into saturday and through the day on saturday before beginning to wind down in the advance of next week's storm. we project by 11:00 saturday night, rain foul totals generally from a quarter of an inch to half an inch. livermore may have over an inch. looks like the east bay will get a drench there. overnight cloudy and foggy with low temperatures in the mid-50s in most locations tomorrow. we'll see lots of clouds in advance of the arrival of the afternoon showers. highs generally in the mid to upper 60s around the bay. let's skip ahead to next wednesday. 12:00 a.m., notice later in the morning as we approach the beginning of the morning rush, we'll see a wave of rain coming in from the northwest that will expand and cover all areas, all parts of the bay area by wednesday evening and continue into thursday morning. so this storm next week could be quite a drencher. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. the approaching storm for

it's walk to workday in san francisco. don't be fooled by this video of everybody standing around outside city hall. this is just before a news conference for today's event which encourages people to be active, healthy and environmentally friendly by walking more often. people may be tempted to drive though because the cost of driving hit the lowest price since 2010. that's according to aaa. the big difference is the price of gas which dropped about 25% from last year. from california's average price per gallon, it is now $2.78. the average car insurance up nearly 10%. car depreciation increased slightly. meaning that used cars are not holding value as well as they used to. that's because new car sales have increased. happening now, fans are sitting down to watch the warriors play on an imax-sized screen. first time ever a sports event

stops. >> the polls are saying that john kasich has a double digit lead in silicon valley and the bay area, which could mean he could come away with maybe as many as 30 delegates in this area alone. that's enough to put a knock on donald trump that could deny him the nomination. >> quinnipiac poll released this week has kasich as the only gop candidate to beat clinton or sanders. so far the ohio governor has won only his home state in the primaries and hoping for a near political miracle at a contested convention. workers who take care of children are left behind when california raised the minimum wage to $15. that's because they are considered independent contractors. today they went to the state capitol to demand higher wages. here's the story from sacramento. >> education worked for us, earns poverty wages. >> cares for 12 children in her home. she gets paid through california

subsidized child care program. after factoring in all expenses, she gets to keep about $5 an hour. >> it's very difficult. >> the money she gets from the state she has to pay for utilities, food for the kids and school supplies. she's also required to have an assistant and pay them minimum wage. sometimes the money doesn't come in on time. >> if i lose one family or one delay in payment for one of my families, i'm in a real big financial mess. >> child care providers stood by workers in the fight to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. now they want to earn the same. >> quality child care is a ladder out of poverty for families. today that ladder is broken. >> mcmillan not only takes care of the kids she serves, she teaches them. >> i have a success rate where every child who left my child care and started kindergarten, they started in the top of their class in kindergarten. >> she believes higher wages would attract more quality early

on hoverboards, 10-year-old ava powers had to have one of her own. >> they looked really fun. >> this was the only thing she wanted for christmas. >> ava's mother susan decided to order a hoverboard from swag -- the white color ava wanted was sold out. >> i chose what i thought was the next best thing. >> hike like a garnet color. >> ava was overjoud christmas morning. she did want a white one. ava, couldn't take it out for a spin. >> it was not fun. i would like stare at it but couldn't ride it. >> it takes a lot for a 10-year-old to not open their christmas gift or not take it out and play with it. >> the swap would be simple, right? >> i thought i would get it pretty soon. took a long time. >> at first swagway said it would take six to ten days. >> i called three, four weeks later, it was going to be 20 days and they didn't know. >> 20 days came and went. still no hoverboard. >> she was coming home from school for several weeks asking,
