nba history and golden state warrior looking for their 73rd record of the nba season. the team has kind of avoided talking about it all season, but now that it's here, they have no problem addressing this fact. today in the shoot around, a very loose team, like they were yesterday, they had some of the angels players over from yesterday. today, just having some fun, getting loose, know twhag is on the line here tonight. i think the fans here at oracle will not let this team lose to the memphis grizzlies. but harrison barnes told us this morning they're ready to roll. >> it's almost like a playoff game, the excitement, the energy, the amount of text messages we're getting. everyone is acting like this is game one of the finals. hey, man, good luck tonight, make history! it's exciting, because we're on the home court, our fans are here. >> it's been like that all year as far as a playoff type

had to say was, come on down. the basketball court has been a place of refuge for joseph martin. he was born in ivory coast. they were living in liberia when civil war broke out, forcing them to leave. >> there was a war that broke out. so they wanted a better opportunity for us. >> reporter: martin was only 5 when his mother and siblings moved to oakland, speaking no english. >> i was struggling with school. but i didn't give up on myself and i kept trying and here i am now today. >> reporter: today he attends college prep academy and is on the basketball team. his dream is to attend georgetown university to study business. >> i'm ready to go. i'm just ready. >> reporter: trayvon wrote about living in a tough neighborhood where one is never too young to die. at 18, he's the captain of the basketball team at dewey academy, a continuation school.

next year he'll attend college in oakland. >> i'm a single parent, my mom is a single parent, she raised five boys. i'm just trying to make her proud. >> i had to spend two weeks in the superdome during hurricane katrina. >> reporter: dilan wrote a five-page essay about being homeless following katrina. today he's a star athlete. >> i want to really do something for my mother and get a good job and support her. >> reporter: and the young man from ivory coast will take his mentor, a teacher who taught him about the game of basketball. now, meanwhile trayvon will take the vice principal of his school and i can tell you all of them are thrilled to be there tonight.

meanwhile, more's the storm impact scale, which we've used to rank every storm this season, from one to five. the approaching storm ranks one on the storm impact scale. a storm of light intensity. here's the forecast starting at 5:00 this afternoon. notice the increase in clouds this evening and light rain develops at the north bay just before midnight. then the lighter showers will sweep down through the central part of the bay area around 2:00 a.m. by 5:00 tomorrow morning, we'll see most of the rain in the south bay and east bay but wet pavement everywhere. so the morning commute will likely be slow and slippery. dan and ama? >> spencer, thank you. sheriff deputies are investigating a shooting in rodeo. it happened right there on sandy cove drive around 2:30 this afternoon. two people were killed. officials say it appears to be a murder/suicide. the death of a homeless man

in an officer involved shooting is fueling the call for the firing of the police chief. >> leslie brinkley was at a town hall meeting today and joins us live. >> reporter: for the first time we have a photo of the homeless man. residents are upset because they say an encounter with police escalated things to the point where he was shot to death, but the police say they were defending themselves, they feared for their lives. >> may god mess you in the name of the father -- >> reporter: on the sidewalk, 45-year-old luis was killed by police, a prayer service wednesday morgning. and across the street, that community anger erupted over the shooting. the police chief tried to update the investigation into that shooting last thursday when three officers responded to a call about a man in an altered state in possession of a large knife. he claims they have 12 civilian

witnesses. >> officers located him seated on the sidewalk with a large knife in his hand with the slble pointed up. >> reporter: four bean bags and seven bullets were fired in self-defense. he was shot six times. >> how can you say you're having an independent investigation when you're already saying this is what we believe happened? >> i didn't say what i believe happened. i've given the facts that came from interviews. >> you are prejudging. >> justice for everybody you kill! >> reporter: mission residents say they want peace officers to restore peace, not escalate violence. there are tree ongoing investigations. the identities of the officers involved in the shooting should be released in the next few days. leslie brinkley, "abc7 news." employees at san francisco best buy store will hold a vigil

tonight for co-worker nicole fitz who was found dead last friday. police describe the case as a homicide. the search is still under way forfeits's missing 2-year-old daughter arianna. the vigil is planned for 9:00 tonight on harrison street at 14th in san francisco. antioch police believe speed is to blame for a major accident last night that sent three men to the hospital. this honda suv crashed into a highway utility truck with two construction employees inside. it took firefighters 45 minutes to extricate the driver. the mayor says he was on his way home and saw the crash, and stopped to help. >> i was telling him he would be okay. >> the driver was taken to the medical center in walnut creek with major injuries.

the two construction workers are okay. the suv also sideswiped city councilwoman's vehicle on her way home from that same meeting. she was not hurt. new details on monday's hit and run on highway 35 that killed a 27-year-old autistic man. police say a driver reported steve brasnor laying down on the road, and a driver hit him. police are looking for a mercedes gla. the vehicle may have damage to the front wheel well. a san francisco anti-violence organization is holding its second gun buyback in four months. this is video of december's buyback. more than 240 fire warms were turned in. saturday's gun buyback will be on howard street in the south of market area. hand guns $100, assault weapons $200. the event goes from 8:00 a.m. to

this is "abc7 news." bathrooms for transgender people is spreading today. north carolina, south carolina, and tennessee all in the spotlight. >> more bay area businesses are jumping into the fire storm. kristen sze has the latest. >> reporter: the biggest headline this afternoon, ringo starr has become the latest musician to cancel his show in north carolina, which became the first state to require that transgender people use public bathrooms that match the sex on their birth certificate rather than their gender identity. a letter was delivered today urging tennessee lawmakers not to follow north carolina. it was signed by in bay area ceos.

>> reporter: and in south carolina today, opponents of a similar bill rallied outside the statehouse in columbia. protesters say the bill being debated today puts them in danger of harassment and violence. but the aim is to protect women and children from people who pretend to be transgender just to get into the bathroom. in north carolina, more than 100 people held a prayer vigil to support the bill, trying to counteract the backlash since the law passed two weeks ago, with pay pal canceling an expense and nba relocating next year's all-star game. ama? >> thank you so much, kristen. some innovative bay area students took part in a science fair unlike any other today. president obama checked out

their inventions during today's white house science fair. nearly 40 teams took part. the president had an inspiring message for all of the young inventors. >> you remind us that, together, through science, we can tackle some of the biggest challenges that we face. >> also among the young scientists, maya varma from san jose. for just $35, she made a device that diagnoses chronic lung diseases. thousands of verizon workers have hit the picket lines. east coast verizon land line and cable workers walked off the job today after working without a contract since august. the strike involves about 40,000 workers in nine eastern states. west coast verizon employees are not part of the strike. the government says airline arrival times are improving.

top camera here. it will be breezy in the afternoon with isolated showers and a big warmup coming our way this weekend. let's take a look at current temperatures. 59 in san francisco, san mateo, 66. 67 in fairfield and 70 at brentwood. moving along to the storm impact scale, which we used to rank every storm this season from one light to five severe. the approaching storm ranks one on the storm impact scale, a storm of light intensity expected to produce light to moderate showers. this is beginning at midnight tonight or 12:00 a.m. tomorrow. some spotty showers up in the north bay at that hour. then the storm or line of showers will sweep southward by 2:00 a.m. most of the central and northern parts of the bay area will be getting wet weather. around 4:00 a.m., we'll see the rain shifting southward to eastward. expect dach roads for the morning commute.

then partial clearing, breezy conditions by the afternoon. and a few lingering isolated showers after that. the breezes will be quite strong at time. starting at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, many locations will have gusts up to 25 miles per hour. and later in the evening during the late night, gusts between 25 and 30 miles per hour across the bay area. rainfall totals we project by 7:00 tomorrow evening will be anywhere from 0.04 of an inch in livermore and some light snow in the sierra. a winter weather advisory is in effect for the western slopes from 11:00 p.m. today to noon tomorrow. carry chain it is you're driving out that way. accumulation totals from 1 to 6 inches. in the bay area tonight, low temperatures under showery conditions. upper 40s to low 50s. tomorrow's heights, low to mid 60s around the bay and inland.

individuvideo out of mississippi. a school's roof gave way. you can see the workers running trying to avoid that rush of water that comes through. no one was hurt, but the school is dealing with the mess. well, these letters say it all. help. a woman rescued after nine days after spelling out help in twigs. here is her incredible story. >> reporter: she had her dog queeny but not much else. a wrong turn in the arizona desert left ann rogers with no food, no water, no cell service for nine days. >> i knew how much pain my family, my friends, and those who knew me well were feeling about the fact that i had been gone, mising so long. >> reporter: the 72-year-old had to rely on her mind. she came up with using desert items to create this sign.

she remembered what she read over the years about others who survived. eating plants, drinking pond water. >> the ground searchers found my note "help, i need it now." >> reporter: her instincts finally paid off. a helicopter swooped in. ann rogers was healthy enough to walk to her rescuers. >> age does not necessarily mean inability. it can mean wisdom. >> reporter: wisdom enough for a grandma to live to tell the tale the day she showed her own rescuers how to find her. she said she broke down in tears when that helicopter landed. she went to the hospital but there wasn't anything wrong with her. she said she's already ready for her next hike. host the memphis grizzlies. a win would give the warriors the best record in league history. they're tied for the chicago bulls at 72 games. "abc7 news" was in oakland for the warriors' shoot around. laura anthony tweeted this video you're looking at. tech giant shawn parker announced his grant of $250 million to create the parker institute for cancer immuno cancer in san francisco. the goal is the speed development of cancer fighting drugs. he said he's proud to partner with ucsf and stanford. these counterfeit bills are part of a big bust in cupertino. david louie was first to tweet about it. he's live tonight in cupertino at the scene of the raid. david? >> reporter: ama, the counterfeit $20 bills have been popping up in 30 states over the past year and a half. detectives traced those bills to

this cupertino apartment building and the detective now have a man in custody who is facing felony charges here in california and in virginia. the manufacturing of counterfeit bills was going on inside this apartment complex in cupertino right next to some apple offices. the sheriff's office showed off ink jet printers and 100% cotton paper that were used. the fake $20 bills were printed in layers showing some levels of sophistication. but to the naked eye, the bills might be difficult to detect. the bills shown on the top is real. the one below is one that is seized. >> mr. aston alone was responsible for the shipward of upwards of 2,000 packages a year of counterfeit currency linked to 30 different states and likely hundreds of thousands of counterfit currency being flooded into our economy.

>> reporter: detectives believe he was making over $100,000 a year from the operation. the link to cupertino is made by police in fairfax county in northern virginia where merchants were seeing a high volume of the fake bills. because some were purchased in california, the counterfeits might be in local circumstanlac. an employee never expected this operation was across the street. >> nobody suspicious or looked out of the norm. >> reporter: so you never thought anybody would be in there counterfeiting $20 bills? >> no, not at all. >> reporter: in cupertino, david louie, "abc7 news." the so-called affluenza teen, ethan couch, was ordered to spend two years in prison, six months for each of the four people he killed in a drunk driving wreck. he violated parole when he fled

this is "abc7 news." there's new warning about some popular job search website. millions of people use them and some are falling victim to fraud. here's the details. >> reporter: millions are searching for jobs online using the popular sites like linked in and indeed. but it turns out some of those so-called employers are scammers, hiding behind a screen. sarah wade of st. louis says one of these crooks sent her a job opportunity. that initially looked legit. >> with linked in, i had so much luck with finding jobs in the past that i didn't suspect this to be a scam at all. >> reporter: experts say here's how the scam works. the crooks send the job seeker a

check. a sort of signing bonus for let's say $2,000. then there's a catch. instructions to send most of that money back in the form of a gift card or wire transfer. the scammer tells them it's a one-time fee. the check is a fake, and now the job seeker's money is in the hands of the scammer. wade received one of those checks for $2400, but she didn't play the game. >> i ended up calling up the bank and they proceeded to let me know that it was fake. >> reporter: the ftc admitting scams like these are a problem. >> as technology changes the way that predators seek people out who are looking for these opportunities are change with that. >> reporter: and it's not just linked in. karen used the job search site indeed and wasn't so lucky. she tried to deposit a check for almost $2400, a check that bounced and sent $2,000 to a

scammer. >> a real big shock. >> reporter: indeed has an entire team dedicated to the search quality effort, and they said we do everything we can to determine a job's suitability. linked in, which sarah wade used, telling us when this type of activity is detected, we work to remove it d prevent future recurrences. we have taken action on sarah's issue. time now for ask finney. michael finney here answering your questions sent to him by a facebook, twitter and e-mail. community groups came out to san jose city hall to share their concerns about rising rent. chris nguyen is live at city wall with the story for us. >> reporter: that ordinance has pretty much stayed the same since 1979. the city council will take it up next week and committee members are hoping their voices and concerns are heard. at san jose city hall this afternoon, a pitch from residents who don't want to be left behind. >> not all land lords but some are mighty greedy and that is displacing people. >> reporter: as rent continues to rise, more people are

struggling to make ends meet. >> will i be able to stay in my apartment? >> reporter: resident rose wallace took legal action last year after she says her landlord tried to evict her. a judge ruled she could stay put for now, but what may have been a small victory has led to a feeling of constant anxiety. >> every day i'm worried are they going to evict me again this year? what are they going to do next? i'm terrified. >> reporter: council members are reviewing the city's apartment rent ordinance which caps annual increases at 8% for buildings built before 1979. the housing department recommends tying any maximum increase to the consumer price index. the mayor, however, favors a fixed rate increase. >> what we need to do is create more affordable housing in san jose and throughout the region. that's where my energies are most focused. >> reporter: nearly three dozen local groups were represented.

>> i have done my best to live by the rules and regulations of this apartment complex, i'm just hoping everything will work out for all of us. >> reporter: the city council is expected to vote next tuesday, which would be applied to apartment buildings built before 1995. in san jose, chris nguyen, "abc7 news." >> and a new survey finds it cost a lot more to be considered wealthy in the bay area. according to the charles schwab survey, you need to be considered at least $6 million to be considered rich. $1 million is only considered comfortable. in other parts of the country, only $2.5 million was needed to be considered wealthy. 86% believe that the cost of living in the bay area is unreasonable. only 2% say it's affordable. that is going to do it for this edition of "abc7 news" at 4:00. thank you for joining us.
