in an officer involved shooting is fueling the call for the firing of the police chief. >> leslie brinkley was at a town hall meeting today and joins us live. >> reporter: for the first time we have a photo of the homeless man. residents are upset because they say an encounter with police escalated things to the point where he was shot to death, but the police say they were defending themselves, they feared for their lives. >> may god mess you in the name of the father -- >> reporter: on the sidewalk, 45-year-old luis was killed by police, a prayer service wednesday morgning. and across the street, that community anger erupted over the shooting. the police chief tried to update the investigation into that shooting last thursday when three officers responded to a call about a man in an altered state in possession of a large knife. he claims they have 12 civilian

witnesses. >> officers located him seated on the sidewalk with a large knife in his hand with the slble pointed up. >> reporter: four bean bags and seven bullets were fired in self-defense. he was shot six times. >> how can you say you're having an independent investigation when you're already saying this is what we believe happened? >> i didn't say what i believe happened. i've given the facts that came from interviews. >> you are prejudging. >> justice for everybody you kill! >> reporter: mission residents say they want peace officers to restore peace, not escalate violence. there are tree ongoing investigations. the identities of the officers involved in the shooting should be released in the next few days. leslie brinkley, "abc7 news." employees at san francisco best buy store will hold a vigil

tonight for co-worker nicole fitz who was found dead last friday. police describe the case as a homicide. the search is still under way forfeits's missing 2-year-old daughter arianna. the vigil is planned for 9:00 tonight on harrison street at 14th in san francisco. antioch police believe speed is to blame for a major accident last night that sent three men to the hospital. this honda suv crashed into a highway utility truck with two construction employees inside. it took firefighters 45 minutes to extricate the driver. the mayor says he was on his way home and saw the crash, and stopped to help. >> i was telling him he would be okay. >> the driver was taken to the medical center in walnut creek with major injuries.

the two construction workers are okay. the suv also sideswiped city councilwoman's vehicle on her way home from that same meeting. she was not hurt. new details on monday's hit and run on highway 35 that killed a 27-year-old autistic man. police say a driver reported steve brasnor laying down on the road, and a driver hit him. police are looking for a mercedes gla. the vehicle may have damage to the front wheel well. a san francisco anti-violence organization is holding its second gun buyback in four months. this is video of december's buyback. more than 240 fire warms were turned in. saturday's gun buyback will be on howard street in the south of market area. hand guns $100, assault weapons $200. the event goes from 8:00 a.m. to

this is "abc7 news." bathrooms for transgender people is spreading today. north carolina, south carolina, and tennessee all in the spotlight. >> more bay area businesses are jumping into the fire storm. kristen sze has the latest. >> reporter: the biggest headline this afternoon, ringo starr has become the latest musician to cancel his show in north carolina, which became the first state to require that transgender people use public bathrooms that match the sex on their birth certificate rather than their gender identity. a letter was delivered today urging tennessee lawmakers not to follow north carolina. it was signed by in bay area ceos.

host the memphis grizzlies. a win would give the warriors the best record in league history. they're tied for the chicago bulls at 72 games. "abc7 news" was in oakland for the warriors' shoot around. laura anthony tweeted this video you're looking at. tech giant shawn parker announced his grant of $250 million to create the parker institute for cancer immuno cancer in san francisco. the goal is the speed development of cancer fighting drugs. he said he's proud to partner with ucsf and stanford. these counterfeit bills are part of a big bust in cupertino. david louie was first to tweet about it. he's live tonight in cupertino at the scene of the raid. david? >> reporter: ama, the counterfeit $20 bills have been popping up in 30 states over the past year and a half. detectives traced those bills to

this cupertino apartment building and the detective now have a man in custody who is facing felony charges here in california and in virginia. the manufacturing of counterfeit bills was going on inside this apartment complex in cupertino right next to some apple offices. the sheriff's office showed off ink jet printers and 100% cotton paper that were used. the fake $20 bills were printed in layers showing some levels of sophistication. but to the naked eye, the bills might be difficult to detect. the bills shown on the top is real. the one below is one that is seized. >> mr. aston alone was responsible for the shipward of upwards of 2,000 packages a year of counterfeit currency linked to 30 different states and likely hundreds of thousands of counterfit currency being flooded into our economy.

>> reporter: detectives believe he was making over $100,000 a year from the operation. the link to cupertino is made by police in fairfax county in northern virginia where merchants were seeing a high volume of the fake bills. because some were purchased in california, the counterfeits might be in local circumstanlac. an employee never expected this operation was across the street. >> nobody suspicious or looked out of the norm. >> reporter: so you never thought anybody would be in there counterfeiting $20 bills? >> no, not at all. >> reporter: in cupertino, david louie, "abc7 news." the so-called affluenza teen, ethan couch, was ordered to spend two years in prison, six months for each of the four people he killed in a drunk driving wreck. he violated parole when he fled

this is "abc7 news." there's new warning about some popular job search website. millions of people use them and some are falling victim to fraud. here's the details. >> reporter: millions are searching for jobs online using the popular sites like linked in and indeed. but it turns out some of those so-called employers are scammers, hiding behind a screen. sarah wade of st. louis says one of these crooks sent her a job opportunity. that initially looked legit. >> with linked in, i had so much luck with finding jobs in the past that i didn't suspect this to be a scam at all. >> reporter: experts say here's how the scam works. the crooks send the job seeker a

check. a sort of signing bonus for let's say $2,000. then there's a catch. instructions to send most of that money back in the form of a gift card or wire transfer. the scammer tells them it's a one-time fee. the check is a fake, and now the job seeker's money is in the hands of the scammer. wade received one of those checks for $2400, but she didn't play the game. >> i ended up calling up the bank and they proceeded to let me know that it was fake. >> reporter: the ftc admitting scams like these are a problem. >> as technology changes the way that predators seek people out who are looking for these opportunities are change with that. >> reporter: and it's not just linked in. karen used the job search site indeed and wasn't so lucky. she tried to deposit a check for almost $2400, a check that bounced and sent $2,000 to a

scammer. >> a real big shock. >> reporter: indeed has an entire team dedicated to the search quality effort, and they said we do everything we can to determine a job's suitability. linked in, which sarah wade used, telling us when this type of activity is detected, we work to remove it d prevent future recurrences. we have taken action on sarah's issue. time now for ask finney. michael finney here answering your questions sent to him by a facebook, twitter and e-mail. community groups came out to san jose city hall to share their concerns about rising rent. chris nguyen is live at city wall with the story for us. >> reporter: that ordinance has pretty much stayed the same since 1979. the city council will take it up next week and committee members are hoping their voices and concerns are heard. at san jose city hall this afternoon, a pitch from residents who don't want to be left behind. >> not all land lords but some are mighty greedy and that is displacing people. >> reporter: as rent continues to rise, more people are

struggling to make ends meet. >> will i be able to stay in my apartment? >> reporter: resident rose wallace took legal action last year after she says her landlord tried to evict her. a judge ruled she could stay put for now, but what may have been a small victory has led to a feeling of constant anxiety. >> every day i'm worried are they going to evict me again this year? what are they going to do next? i'm terrified. >> reporter: council members are reviewing the city's apartment rent ordinance which caps annual increases at 8% for buildings built before 1979. the housing department recommends tying any maximum increase to the consumer price index. the mayor, however, favors a fixed rate increase. >> what we need to do is create more affordable housing in san jose and throughout the region. that's where my energies are most focused. >> reporter: nearly three dozen local groups were represented.

>> i have done my best to live by the rules and regulations of this apartment complex, i'm just hoping everything will work out for all of us. >> reporter: the city council is expected to vote next tuesday, which would be applied to apartment buildings built before 1995. in san jose, chris nguyen, "abc7 news." >> and a new survey finds it cost a lot more to be considered wealthy in the bay area. according to the charles schwab survey, you need to be considered at least $6 million to be considered rich. $1 million is only considered comfortable. in other parts of the country, only $2.5 million was needed to be considered wealthy. 86% believe that the cost of living in the bay area is unreasonable. only 2% say it's affordable. that is going to do it for this edition of "abc7 news" at 4:00. thank you for joining us.
