offering hopeful candidates some tempting offers. >> tricking them into thinking they've been hired for a job, even sending them signing bonuses. unfortunately, it's a trap. gio benitez explains. >> reporter: millions are searching for jobs online using popular sites like linkedin and indeed. but it turns out some of those so-called employers are actually scammers, hiding behind a screen. sarah wade of st. louis says one of these crooks sent her a job opportunity that initially looked legit. >> i went ahead and sent my resume to the e-mail he had told me to send it to. >> reporter: wade unsuspecting that anything would go wrong. >> with linkedin, i had so much luck with finding jobs in the past that i didn't suspect this to be a scam at all. >> reporter: experts say here's how the scam works. the crook sends a desperate job seeker a check, a sort of signing bonus for, let's say, $2,000. then there's a catch. instructions to send most of

that money back in the form of a gift card or wire transfer. the scammer tells them it's a one-time fee. the check, of course, is a fake and now the job seeker's money is in the hands of the scammer. wade received one of those checks for 2400 bucks but she didn't play the game. >> i ended up calling up the bank, and they proceeded to let me know that it was fake and for me to make sure i don't deposit it. >> reporter: the ftc admitting that scams like these are a problem. >> as technology changes, the way that predators seek people out who are looking for these types of opportunities will change with that technology. >> reporter: and it's not just linkedin. karen kettering told our chicago station wls she used the job search site indeed and wasn't so lucky. she tried to deposit a check for almost $2400, a check that bounced and sent $2,000 to a scammer. >> to come out fraudulent like this was a real big shock. >> reporter: indeed tells abc

if you're a first-time voter you had to register a month ago, and if you're changing parties, you had to do it all the way back in october. while bernie sanders has a lot of supporters, a lot of them may not be able to vote in the new york primary. according to a new abc news and refinery 29 national poll of millenial women, bernie was the clear favorite with 35% compared to 25% for hillary clinton. the top two republicans in single digits. elsewhere in the country, ted cruz's campaign is running circles around the trump campaign in the delegate selection process. that's left trump banking even more on a big win here in new york. the two democrats seem to be trying to out-new york each other, battling for new york's 247 delegates. sanders flaunting his brooklyn roots. >> thank you all for coming out to my old neighborhood. >> bernie! bernie! >> reporter: a lot of bernie's voters here may do just that. >> we have a system here in new york where young people who have

not previously registered and want to register today just can't do it. >> reporter: because, they say, new york makes it too hard for them to get out and vote. i'm david wright in new york. donald trump had a bizarre moment at a rally in pittsburgh last night. addressing a crowd of about 8,000 supporters, trump decided to resurrect the name of the famed penn state football coach, joe paterno. >> how's joe paterno? we going to bring that back? right? how about that whole deal? >> paterno died in 2012 after he was fired from penn state for his alleged role in covering up sex abuse committed by former coach jerry sandusky. trump's campaign later clarified his statement saying, he was talking about paterno's bronze statue which was torn down. >> oh, that's it. now we know. there's new video this morning of a stunningly close call for a u.s. naval destroyer. russian attack jets flew

dangerously close to the american vessel several times this week. the jets made more than 30 passes in international waters in the baltic sea. the russian pilots did not respond to radio contact. authorities say it's one of the most aggressive russian acts against the u.s. military in decades. so why not fire at the russians? as one retired naval officer said, you don't get to kill people just because they're being annoying. new fallout from last year's plane crash in the french alps. the families of the victims are suing the flight school where the pilot was trained. he deliberately locked himself in the cockpit and flew into a mountainside killing everyone on board. the lawsuit claims the arizona flight school did not properly screen the pilot's medical background, which would have revealed bouts with severe depression. autopsy results on former new orleans saints player will smith indicates he was shot seven times in the back but that finding does very little to clear up exactly what happened last saturday night when smith was killed. here's abc's stephanie ramos.

>> reporter: new orleans police say former nfl star will smith had a fully loaded weapon in his car when he was allegedly gunned down by 28-year-old cardell hayes. the attorney for the family of will smith, peter thompson, says smith never threatened the man who shot him. >> at no time during this event did will smith ever brandish or carry on his person a firearm. >> reporter: authorities say smith's weapon was never fired. in this surveillance video provided by the restaurant two blocks away from the shooting minutes before shots were fired, you can see what appears to be the former new orleans saints star will smith's mercedes suv bump or get really close to the hummer resembling the vehicle of the alleged gunman cardell hayes. then the hummer pulls over. the suv keeps going. seconds later, the hummer appears to follow. thompson says this was no hit and run. >> they slammed on their brakes on magazine street, did not believe they even hit the hummer. there's no damage to that car. and they went on about their business. >> reporter: thompson claims the

hummer then violently rammed into the back of the mercedes, shattering the rear window. smith got out of the car, words were exchanged. the lawyer says smith's wife and another passenger went to defuse the situation, but as they walked back, shots were fired. hayes' defense attorney says his client was defending himself. >> it would be safe to say that not only did my client feel threatened but citizens that were out there in that block felt threatened, as well. >> reporter: the coroner's preliminary report says smith was fatally shot seven times in the back and once in the chest. if hayes is convicted of second-degree murder, he faces life in prison. kendis and diane, back to you. chicago's embattled mayor is responding to a scathing task force report on the city's police department. the report urged the department to acknowledge its history of racism. mayor rahm emanuel says he agrees with a lot in the report. emanuel created the task force

after the death of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald, the dashcam video showing his shooting by a white police officer led to unrest and protests. a cleveland dad is facing four years in prison for taking his son from alabama when the child was just 5 years old. that child now 19 pleading with the judge to spare his father prison time. here's abc's alex perez. >> reporter: an emotional teenager pleading with a cleveland judge, his identity protected by the court, begging for leniency for the man who kidnapped him, his father. >> i don't know what else to say other than not to send my father to jail. >> reporter: in 2002 defendant bobby hernandez took his then 5-year-old son, julian, from his alabama home. hernandez moved to cleveland, ohio, where he created new identities for him and julian. for 13 years, julian's mother searched for her son. attorney gloria allred reading a letter on her behalf in court. >> during my darkest moments, i considered suicide. >> reporter: authorities even using this age progression picture, hoping to find him.

but it wasn't until julian was applying for college loans that investigators discovered discrepancies with his social security number. prosecutors wanted hernandez to face 54 years behind bars. the judge sentenced him to four. >> i accept full responsibility for everything i did. >> reporter: hernandez and his attorney do plan to appeal. prosecutors in alabama are now working to determine if he will face charges there as well. alex perez, abc news, chicago. now to south florida where a fisherman is recovering after being seriously injured by a shark. some of the serious injuries to the man's arm are too gruesome for us to show you. the victim is a former marine and he was spearfishing with a group of friends when he was attacked by a seven-foot bull shark. experts say bull shark is one of the most aggressive sharks in the world. if you sneak a peek at your phone in the movie theater, soon enough you may not have to hide. amc entertainment is kicking around the idea of having

>> the 15-year-old is accused of pressuring a classmate to use a vaporizer, getting her classmate kicked out of school, but the actress apparently got some special treatment. here's abc's linzie janis. >> clap with us. >> reporter: doer rat explorer has long been synonymous with the adorable animated girl who teaches children spanish on the hit show, but the voice behind dora is now reportedly named in a lawsuit filed in a manhattan civil court. the a.p. reports the case brought by nadia leonelli and frederick sundwall alleges in september, the voice of the most recent edition of dora fatima ptacek, encouraged their daughter to join her in using a vaping pen to inhale caramel flavored water in a bathroom at avenues, a private new york school. according to the a.p. report, when school officials found out about the incident, the voice of dora the explorer was given a three-day suspension, while the daughter of the couple who filed the lawsuit was expelled.

the couple reportedly arguing their daughter was treated unfairly because she was not a celebrity. >> the parents are basically saying the school violated its own rules. that it's so unfair that they should be forced to readmit their daughter. >> reporter: ptacek and her fame say they have no comment. as for nickelodeon, it says fatima is a terrific young lady and we hope that this matter can be resolved as a private matter. in a statement, the avenues school says, avenues has a very high standard and follows a fair process when there are infractions. we know students will make mistakes, but we expect them to take accountability for them. the attorney for the couple who brought the suit says what her clients want most is for their daughter to be able to return to school. linzie janis, abc news, new york. coming up, the brainiacs who are taking over the white house. >> it's president obama's final white house science fair.

if you target americans, you have no safe haven. we will find you. >> the president also mentioned the boston marathon bombing which happened three years ago tomorrow. he reminded americans to remain strong, resilient and not give in to fear. and secretary of state john kerry is responding to comments by donald trump and others that the u.s. should bring back waterboarding. in a speech about human rights abuses, kerry said the u.s. is opposed to the use of torture in any format, any time by any government. russian fighter jets flew close to a u.s. navy destroyer several times this week at a time of heightened tensions between the u.s. and russia. martha raddatz has the details. >> reporter: it is one of the most aggressive russian actions against the u.s. military since the end of the cold war. >> look at the left one. he is on the deck. >> reporter: not just a dangerously close fly-by, within 30 feet of the u.s. destroyer, the jets flew in a way that simulated an attack. and not just once. but again and again.

confirmed. government researchers say there's no doubt the zika virus causes babies to be born with abnormally small heads and other severe brain defects. as evidence, cdc scientists found the virus in the brain tissue, spinal fluid and amniotic fluid of many babies. health officials are expected to strengthen their warnings about the danger of mosquito bites as a result. a so-called bathroom bill in south carolina is coming under fire. the bill would require transgender people to use restrooms matching their sex at birth. it was widely criticized at a hearing on wednesday. opponents say it's simply an attack on the lgbt community. supporters of the bill say opening bathrooms to the opposite gender violates privacy. ethan couch, the teenager who used affluenza defense, has been ordered to serve nearly two years in jail. but the judge has given the defense and the prosecution two weeks to file appeals indicating he might reconsider. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: the texas judge stunning a packed court today with that ruling against the so-called affluenza teen, ethan couch. >> after the first 180 days,

offering hopeful candidates some tempting offers. >> tricking them into thinking they've been hired for a job, even sending them signing bonuses. unfortunately, it's a trap. gio benitez explains. >> reporter: millions are searching for jobs online using popular sites like linkedin and indeed. but it turns out some of those so-called employers are actually scammers, hiding behind a screen. sarah wade of st. louis says one of these crooks sent her a job opportunity that initially looked legit. >> i went ahead and sent my resume to the e-mail he had told me to send it to. >> reporter: wade unsuspecting that anything would go wrong. >> with linkedin, i had so much luck with finding jobs in the past that i didn't suspect this to be a scam at all. >> reporter: experts say here's how the scam works. the crook sends a desperate job seeker a check, a sort of signing bonus for, let's say, $2,000. then there's a catch. instructions to send most of

that money back in the form of a gift card or wire transfer. the scammer tells them it's a one-time fee. the check, of course, is a fake and now the job seeker's money is in the hands of the scammer. wade received one of those checks for 2400 bucks but she didn't play the game. >> i ended up calling up the bank, and they proceeded to let me know that it was fake and for me to make sure i don't deposit it. >> reporter: the ftc admitting that scams like these are a problem. >> as technology changes, the way that predators seek people out who are looking for these types of opportunities will change with that technology. >> reporter: and it's not just linkedin. karen kettering told our chicago station wls she used the job search site indeed and wasn't so lucky. she tried to deposit a check for almost $2400, a check that bounced and sent $2,000 to a scammer. >> to come out fraudulent like this was a real big shock. >> reporter: indeed tells abc
