it's covered by most health plans. live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is "abc7 news." >> good afternoon. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm cheryl jannings. we begin with developing news. two people are injured after a fire in sunny veil. >> reporter david louie is live where he talked with the young family rescued from the building. david? >> reporter: you can see that this is still an active scene. witnesses tell me that they believe the fire started in an unoccupied unit on the second floor here at the twin pines manor apartment, and the fire spread quickly. sky 7 hd was overhead as smoke rose from the complex.

public safety captain shawn ahern said two residents were transported to the hospital. there were a lot of people home when the fire was reported just before 1:00 p.m. more than 30 people were evacuated. a resident said she smelled smoke that appeared to be burnt food left on the stove. first responders said the fire spread down a hallway, so they were prepared to evacuate residents who were standing outside on the balconies. we talked to a family and mother of tw kids, a 1-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son who climbed down a fire ladder to safety. >> the fire was really going and there was a lot of black smoke coming out of number 42 apartment. right away the manager called the fire department and the fire department came. >> you climbed a ladder once, you climb the ladder any time.

you just do it as quick as possible and make sure the kids were down. they grabbed them first. so it was fine. >> reporter: it's not nobody how many will be displaced by the fire. the red cross is here to help with temporary shelter arrangements as needed. you can see that a lot of residents are just standing out on the sidewalk in front of the twin pines manor apartments, not sure when they can go back in and reclaim some of their possessions. firefighters were able to rescue several pets. david louie, "abc7 news." >> david, thank you very much. we first learned about this fire from a viewer who tweeted this video using #abc7now. remember, if you have video or pictures of breaking news, share it with us the same way so we can find it and use it on air and online. authorities are beginning to assess the damage in japan following another powerful earthquake. this one a magnitude 7 that hit in the middle of the night.

>> this is video from inside an apartment when the quake hit at 1:25 saturday morning in japan. at this point, we know of one fatality. but of course, there could be more. daybreak a short time ago revealed massive landslides and damaged roads and buildings. >> the quake was centered about 8 miles from the epicenter of yesterday's quake. >> today, rescuers pulled an 8-month-old baby from the rubble. more than 800 people were injured. >> drew tuma joins us now with a closer look at the quake. >> cheryl, small increments on the richter scale have huge implications on the affected area. today they had that 7.0 quake, and that one was 32 times stronger than the earlier 6.0 quake they had 24 hours before. so these quakes have huge

we'll look at those numbers coming up in the forecast. sl slgz a beach hazard statement is still in effect until 9:00 tonight. this is video sky 7 hd shot over ocean beach earlier today. beautiful as you can see. the advisory took effect about 3:00 this morning, calling for waves up to 18 feet in some locations. it's been downgraded, but it could be dangerous at some bay area beaches. zachy jordan smith is a high functioning autistic child, last seen heading north on his bike toward the b.a.r.t. station. this afternoon, someone spotted him unharmed two miles east of the glenn park b.a.r.t. station in san francisco and he is being reunited with his family. the little boy taken during a carjacking in soledad yesterday as we reported has been reunited with his family.

2-year-old jacob vargas was released by the hospital yesterday evening. the chp says the boy was first examined by medical staff, then interviewed. police are still looking into who stole the car with the boy inside outside their home. a frustrating warning for commuters. a big rig carrying a load of wine overturned blocking traffic for hours. amy hollyfield has the details. >> reporter: look at this backup. the view from sky 7 hd shows miles of cars at a stand still on interstate 880 in hayward. it started at 3:00 this morning and lasted during the morning commute. an overturned big rig on the south bound side, as it crashed it took out a highway side with it which landed on the north bound side blocking two lanes. there were four vehicles involved in the accident. two of the four drivers involved in the crash were hurt. but they'll be okay. >> there were a couple of

visible injuries, shoulders, back, that sort of thing. >> reporter: officials say it started because of a stalled vehicle in the middle of 880. that set off the chain of crashes. >> i have not seen a scene like this in some time. >> reporter: chp officers say the trailer was hauling about 40,000 pounds of liquids, including bartels and james wine coolers. officials knew they needed to unload them before moving the trailer, but they knew they needed to open the freeway as soon as possible. >> it was either going to be hand off loaded which would have taken three hours or more, or give it a shot and use a giant spatula to slide underneath it. >> reporter: so they tried it and successfully and got the trailer on a flat bed truck. >> we were crossing our fingers. >> reporter: the chp is still looking to talk to the driver of

the 2011 uc davis pepper spray incident, remember these pictures? is posing problems against for the university. they are calling for the dismissal of the school's president. the university officials say the school was trying to ensure the incident was fairly portrayed online. a sinkhole blocking traffic for months has finally been repaired. a sewer line was buried in stink ho hole that opened up in october. multiple factors including extensive ground water led to that sinkhole. take a look at this. an elephant seal along the beach is attracting a lot of attention. it's been lying there all day

>> this year's marathon takes place on monday. >> a scary moment for 57 passengers on board a delta airlines flight. take a look at the damage done when a bird hit the wind shield during a flight from new york to nashville. the pilot diverted to charleston, west virginia. nobody was injured. >> birds and aircraft share the same air space, so these things are bound to happen. 99.99 times out of a million they end this way, but any time you see something like that on the aircraft break, it gets your heart beating fast. >> bird strikes are on the rise because of soaring bird populations. last month, an egyptian jet had damage after a flock of birds flew into it. the first case of zika virus has been confirmed to be sexually infected from two men. he returned to the u.s. in january and developed symptoms

a georgia mother is trying to explain why he allowed her 5-year-old son to be paddled at school. >> matt keller has a look at this incident. >> reporter: this video is at the center of a controversy. a 5-year-old was paddled by administrators at school and the mother said she had no choice but to let this happen. little 5-year-old thomas was facing his punishment wednesday at jasper county primary school in georgia for spitting on another student. his mother, shana perez,

recorded the video and posted it on facebook. the county sheriff says perez was recently arrested after her son missed 18 days of school. perez says they were for doctor's appointments. she said she gave permission to administrators for the paddling because she was afraid of going back to jail. >> if he gets suspended, i'm going to be arrested for truancy. she never denied that. she never told me anything otherwise. >> reporter: jasper county schools allow corporal punishment in a parent consents. she now says she shouldn't have. >> i should have said no, you can't paddle him. just take me to jail. >> reporter: corporal punishment is legal in georgia and 18 other states in the south. but this video has led to a big outcry on social media. the school district is investigating the incident and looking into the discipline policies. matt keller, "abc7 news." >> let's move on now, we'll talk about the weekend forecast.
