broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> it was a beautiful day to enjoy the record warmth and a lot of bay area residents got out of the house to do just that. the warm air also offered a reminder to prepare for what is expected to be another long fire season. good evening. i'm eric thomas. the south bay got an early taste today of what's to come this summer when things really heat up. thick under brush provided plenty of fuel for a fire. the news wasn't all bad. leslie brinkly has more. leslie? >> eric, it is a stunningly beautiful night on the streets of san jose. lots of people are out taking it all in. as you mentioned, a one-acre brushfire was an ominous reminder of what's to come. fire season kicked off in a eucalyptus grove in san jose

in sunday afternoon. a homeless encampment might have been the source, but the weather didn't help firefighters. >> there was some wind on it and since it got in the eucalyptus it started torching off and we got a couple of spot fires outside the main perimeter of the fire. >> they couldn't get it to the 200-foot high of the canopy of the trees. they had to take the trees down. traffic on the capitol expressway was shutdown for hour. officials warned there is still a lot of bone dry under brush hidden under all of the greenness around the bay area. folks out enjoying the balmy evening in downtown san jose talk about what they all -- they call -- bipolar weather. >> it is rain and hot weather and then rain and hot weather. >> you have to love california. it rains when it needs to and it clears up when it need to. >> we are walking around and i am wondering why i am wearing the heavy jacket right now.

it is really hot. >> many say vorred the -- savored the summery feel with a cocktail. >> it is delicious. it does president get any better -- it doesn't get any better than this. >> leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> this is a look at the beach in santa cruz. it was quite the popular place. our meteorologist is here and we saw some records today. people were moving awfully fast. >> they were. a spectacular weekend that did include record highs on your sunday. san francisco with a high of 81 beating the old record of 79. oakland up to 83 and 84 in mountain view beating the old high of 83. salinas is four higher than the record. you can see the majority of the area got well into the 80s and some of the heat will spill into our monday before we track some much needed rain. that's coming up in the full accu-weather forecast.

>> hazardous waves prompted an increase in patrols. rescuers blamed the dangerous rip tides for pulling two teenagers into the ocean. the crews called off the search for them last night. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has the story from ocean beach. >> national park service lifeguard doug armstrong is patrolling ocean beach with a strong message to the would be swimmers without proper gear like a wetsuit. >> ocean beach is a dangerous place. there is a lot of currents. there is heavy surf advisories. >> the warning came too late for two teenage boys. both 17 from vallejo who decided to brave the heavy surf, but were swept out to sea. there was an extensive five-hour search by the coast guard and the san francisco fire department, but they were never found. five boys wearing only swim trunks locked arms and waded into the cold surf. the rip currents quickly knocked them off their feet, but four made it to safely. >> one of the four boys turned

around and noticed that the fifth boy was still in distress and re-entered the surf line to assist that young man and he ended up being the second victim. >> you are risking your life here. >> he is letting his kid touch the water, but nothing more. >> we are obviously very worried. we will keep a close eye on the kids and hopefully have lifeguards going back and forth and told the kids no higher than the knees. >> there is no escape. they are rolling in really quickly. and there is a rip. so for people who don't have a safety device, you can get sucked in and it is hard to get out. >> saturday's search was the 12th so far this year on ocean beach. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> developing news tonight in ecuador as the country cleans up from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. more than 260 people were killed and 2500 more injured. tonight a desperate search is on for survivors. abc7 news reporter lilian kim is live in the newsroom with the latest. >> ecuador has a history of

quakes, but it has been decades since the country experienced one of this magnitude. cell pone video captured the panic. items flying off the shelves and then darkness. by many accounts the 7.8 quake lasted more than a minute and had a depth of nearly 12 miles. >> this was a classic ring of fire earthquake. >> walter mooney from menlo park said ecuador was due for an earthquake of this magnitude. >> there was a very large earthquake in ecuador 110 years ago, 1906. the repeat time for these earthquakes is on the order of about 100 years. >> it toppled buildings and flattened freeway crushing the cars beneath them. the owners and and operators of this food truck it has been a day of worry. they have extended family in ecuador, but they are all okay. >> my mom has extended family and we do too, but shooy has

six other brothers and sisters with generations and generations of family. yeah, we were worried. >> 22 students and two teachers from larkspur's redwood high school were in ecuador during the quake. they were in the coastal town puerto lopez. >> they are really motivated. >> she heard the news through a group text among students of prts pated in similar trips to central and south america. the program is called global student embassy. >> they came to ecuador to help reforest and to spread that change. they are a really brave group of kids. i know and thankfully nothing happened to them and they are all safe. >> she says she will be launching a fundraising effort for victims of the quake and plans to work with other students who have had the same wonderful experience in central and south america. abc7 news. >> thanks, lilian. southern japan is being rocked by hundreds of aftershocks after two powerful earthquakes last week. the number of dead is now up to 42.

the one bright spot, a 9-month-old baby girl rescued from the rubble. the continuing aftershocks are making rescue efforts difficult. san francisco mayor ed leigh released this statement today on the eve as we commemorate our city's own 1906 great earthquake and fire. we extend our thoughts and prayers to those people in japan and ecuador. san francisco stands ready to support any international assistance effort to help the children and families in japan and ecuador. the city will honor the victims of both earthquakes at a ceremony tomorrow morning marking 110 years since the 1906 disaster. >> if you can hear me! abc7 news was at marina middle school as firefighters and nurse volunteerses got ready for the next big disaster. it stands for neighborhood emergency response time. they practiced search and rescue techniques setting up command centers. police in alameda are say

an employee working last knitels abc7 news that the suspect was a known troublemaker suspected of painting graffiti at the store in the past. a co-worker saw him and kicked him out of the store and then followed him outside. >> it was 30 seconds or one minute i had three or four shots. when i walked outside i saw my friend down. >> one of the workers is still in the hospital. the suspect is in the alameda county jail. police plan to release his name tomorrow. in berkeley police are looking for the woman who hit someone with a bat near the bart station. it happened before 2:00 outside a liquor store on adeline street near the bart station. the victim was not seriously injured. george clooney tonight is condemning the money raised at his own sf and l.a. political fund easy rayers.

millions of working people. i have been on picket lines in wsh wash dc -- in washington, d.c. and out in the street and out in the rain for those people fighting for $15 and the right to organize. >> coming up a little later, we will look at the republican race where donald trump is once again firing away at ted cruz and the republican national committee. a look tonight the a an incredible rescue in washington state. a coast guard aircrew medevaced a crew who plunged down a water fall. a helicopter is able to grab him out of the water and hoist him 200 feet into the air. he is being treated at the university of oregon for a broken back and clearly this could have been much worse. residents in one south bay neighborhood have reason to worry after finding out a fire hydrant outside a burning townhouse failed. abc7 news was in san jose's dove hill neighborhood where you can see the charred damage to the complex. the fire department says the two nearest hydrants just didn't work during yesterday's fire.

they say water district is responsible. the president of the homeowner's association says neighbor repeatedly reported the problem. >> there was a fire right here. here is the fire hydrant right here. look at the fire hydrant. look at this. does that make any sense? >> nobody was hurt, but two pets were lost in the fire. the red cross is helping four people who were burned out of their home. no word on what caused this fire. tomorrow night san mateo city council will vote on whether to demolish an ice skating rink and replace it with stores. abc7 news was at the bridge point shopping center as protesters fought to save the ice chalet. the rink closed three years ago after changing oich -- changing ownership with another possible change later this month it could leave one rink for all of the peninsula miles away in redwood city. >> the skaters, there is not a lot of ice on the other rinks

a high of 89 degrees and concord 87. we are going to 80 in richmond and 80 in downtown san francisco. oakland at 83 tomorrow. napa 85. as we take you to oakland for game two, the warriors are taking on the rockets at oracle arena. the temperature is about 73 degrees. the sun goes down at 7:49 and hopefully with another warriors win as you are walking out of the arena, the temperatures are very mild at 65. the records we are watching on our monday look like san jose and oakland with the forecasted highs would likely set new records. san francisco and napa look safe right now. their records are not in jeopardy. a forecasted high of 87 will beat their old record set in 2015. with the dry, warm stretch of weather the pollen will still be a problem especially the next four days. monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday the pollen will be at high levels. the main offender is juniper, oak and pine tree.

it looks like friday though we could get relief from the pollen in the form of rain. we bring back the storm impact scale. we are rating our storms from one to 5. one is light and five is the most severe giving you a chance to know each and every storm. the rain we are tracking by the end of the week is a one. it is a light storm with light showers. it is a 10th to half an inch of rain. future weather will jump into your friday. friday morning the storm approaches the coast and it looks like the first half of the friday will be wet with light showers moving through. it is a quick-moving system and by friday evening it is kicking out of here and that will set the stage for a bright weekend on the way next weekend. more spring-like temperatures. here is is the accu-weather seven-day forecast. tomorrow another warm day around here. we are apartment pating more records to drop. by tuesday a sea breeze kicks in. that means the coast is cool, but it is not strong enough to cool off the entire region. wednesday everybody cools off into the 70s. thur a slight chance of shower as the storm approaches on friday. it is a one on the storm impact scale.
