ecuador airports are functioning, but they're overwhelmed by people trying to get out and supplies trying to get out. we spoke to an airline today who said all of the passengers who were supposed to be arriving in the states today will be arriving tomorrow and that includes a group of 20 high schoolers who made it through the earthquake, but are now delayed getting home. the destruction in urban areas is overwhelming. concrete buildings have been reduced to rubble and rescuer workers continue to search for survivors. the high school students who arrived back home were in a small coast al town. there were helping with reforest station efforts there. >> he's an american living in ecuador and he has not been marked as safe and he's actually in the -- one of the red zones so 80% of the city was

destroyed. >> reporter: her friend is a florida native. he's part of what she describes as a sizeable expatriot community in the south american country. she's been monitoring the facebook safety check fefeature but he has not checked in yet. >> i skyped two friends last night. i talked to them and where were they and what their experience was. >> reporter: a couple vacationing in ecuador told us by phone they made it through the quake okay, but it knocked out most communications and infrastructure. >> the hotel we were staying at, they've been very generous and they're letting people come in to recharge their phones with their generators. >> reporter: there are local groups beginning to organize relief areas. there will be drop off areas to collect donations. they should have those locations set later this week.

for those of you who do not have ac. police say they arrested a man for kidnapping a little boy leading to a state wooid amber alert last week. they helped capture him this afternoon. all this drama began when a black honda was stolen from a women's driveway with her 2-year-old son strapped into his car seat. you can see where the boy was found. he was unharmed. police tell us they will push for him to face attempted murder charges because the victim was left inside a locked car with the windows closed. residents are fur rus. they say a weekend fire could have been put out much sooner if two broken fire hydrants had been working. this happened on sugar creek drive. we are there live with a story that you will see only on abc 7 news. have those hydrants been fixed

yet. >> reporter: they have. this fire hydrant is not moving in the ground and that's a good thing. earlier today it was shaking around quite a bit. it's one of two fire hydrants in this area that have been repaired. folks that live next door to this home that caught fire over the weekend want to know why it wasn't repaired sooner. >> over here. look. >> reporter: residents are shaking their heads over this shaking fire hydrant. >> it doesn't make any sense. >> reporter: when a fire broke this weekend firefighters had access to this nearby hydrant except it was broken. the same with this one across the street. >> we have called the city time and time about this fire hydrant. >> it hasn't been fixed and it's major. >> it's a wakeup call now. >> reporter: despite all those calls the water company contracted by the municipal water system to do repairs says the only call they received was today. what time did you get called?

>> just a few minutes ago. >> we do not have a record of these complaints. if we had known we would have fixed it right away. >> reporter: three employees inspect 300 fire hydrants a year. there are 850 hydrants total. employees rely on inspection and complaints to catch problems. how did these two get past all of those? >> we'd have to look into that. >> reporter: this hydrant with the hole was fixed in december of 2015. it's unclear what happened since and it's unclear how many more could be broken. is that a problem that the city doesn't know how much fire hydrants are currently out of service right now. >> like i said we have that maintenance plan. >> reporter: firefighters got water from this hydrant further away. residents wonder if the fire could have been put out sooner. a train killed a pedestrian

today. this happened around 3:00 this afternoon. we were above it as the nvgsz was under way. passengers were taken to the next stop on a bus. none of them were injured in that collision. the police on the lookout for a man who randomly attacked another man. the victim was walking with his family when the man that you see in this sketch hopped out of a vehicle. he walked over and said what's up and then punched the victim in the face. the attacker got back in the vehicle. you see a picture of the vehicle on the right and then took off. a two-hour standoff in front of the state capital has come a peaceful end. the man surrendered to police about an hour ago. a group of women have settled their racial discrimination lawsuit against the napa valley wine train.

11 woman accused the crew of kicking them off for being too loud. ten of the women are african-american. they say they were targeted because of their race. both sides settled the case through private mediation. the settlement amount is con feshl. san francisco's china community welcomed a new addition to the chinese hospital. it's called the patient tower. it's located where the first hospital was built 91 years ago. we go down memory lane and joins us live from china town. >> reporter: definitely this was a place to be today in chinatown. they were offering tours. i think former san francisco mayor willy brown said it best when he said this is really a hospital for the community by the community. in chinatown dangerons are

symbolic of power. no surprise that it was picked to represent the china's hospital's success. this is the only san francisco supervisor born here. >> i'm really proud. to me being born here and seeing a rebirth of the hospital brings a lot of joy to me. >> reporter: today this section of the hospital opened its doors not only to the community, but to all of san francisco with state-of-the-art equipment. >> it's becoming a great institution. it's come a long way. >> reporter: the eight-story to tower replaced the original building which came online in 1925 built out of the necessity. >> if you were chinese-american you couldn't get help anywhere else. >> the staff speaks and understands the culture like most of us grew up in this area.

that's a good party. >> reporter: there is a lot of concern about whether curry is going to be good to go tonight so i thought i better warm up just in case. i played a little ball in high school. i was a guard, so i thought i better get warmed up just in case. nowhere in site, that was curry at today's warriors shoot around. not a great sign for fans hoping the star could rebound quickly from saturday's twisted ankle in the second quarter. >> he's probably going to be in the game plan. we need him and he's a great player. it's not a game without him. >> reporter: in a perfect world curry would be on the court tonight, but fans realize it's early in the playoffs and it's better to play it safe now. >> i hope he doesn't play. i think we still can beat them by ten points with him not
