francisco police officers association. they were given hats, pins and other police souvenirs. >> last night we were made aware of this family from hawaii being victimized. >> reporter: 14-year-old kakia ahuna, his parents and two brothers came to san francisco from their home on kauai. the 14-year-old will have surgery next week to remove a brain tumor. on friday, they played tourist on the wharf near pier 39. thieves broke into their car and took their bags, most important to kakiya's mother the get well cards from family and friends. >> i was really saving to read them to him while he was in the hospital during recovery. and those are the kind of things that can't be replaced. >> reporter: the most expensive items stolen, a laptop and camera. 16-year-old kili kai is a budding photographer. he took this beautiful picture on his camera. the poa offered to replace the stolen items. >> we're very pleased you're here.

trying to help out. >> thank you. we really appreciate the support. >> reporter: today they went shopping at best buy. kili kai got a new laptop and he got a new camera. >> is this what you want? >> yeah. this is exactly what i had. >> we saw a 46% increase in auto boostings in the central district of san francisco. >> reporter: that includes fisherman's wharf. merchants here have been trying to get the word out to tourists to stop leaving valuables in their cars. their campaign includes these park smart stickers posted around the area, better yet, they now want to stick these warnings on parking meters. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> great to see a touch of the aloha spirit in the bay area. a federal judge today denied a request by ab oakland family that wanted to back out a legal settlement in the 2013 death of a man in police custody. the family of 51-year-old armailo was awarded $450,000 in

january days before the city released body cam video showing the oakland resident struggling to breathe during an arrest. an autopsy later found cocaine and alcohol in his system. family members sought to throw out the settlement, saying some of the man's siblings did not agree with the deal. but today a judge ruled against them. a 3-year-old girl is in the hospital now after she was hit by a car on an east oakland street. sky 7 hd was over the scene at 98th avenue and birch street around 12:30 this afternoon. police say the driver who hit the girl pulled over and cooperated with investigators. the girl was conscious and breathing when she was taken to highland hospital in an ambulance. another shooting on an east bay friday has some people on edge but those who we spoke with today are refusing to live in fear. a fatal shooting last night on highway 4 in pittsburg is the 18th east bay freeway shooting since last november. abc 7 news reporter eric thomas live in pittsburg with new details on this investigation. eric? >> reporter: larry, we're just a

few feet away from where the car came to rest after the shooting last night which took place behind me on highway 4. it is unsolved at this time, although an april 1st shooting not far from here has been solved with an arrest. police agencies aren't talking much about this case, even about how much they are cooperating with this case and others. but here is more about what happened on this spot last night. when we arrived, there was already one memorial just off highway 4 to the victim of last night's shooting. later, we watched three young men put up another. it says "rest in peace 8-ball." the young men did not want to talk on camera. the victim's real name has not been released. we know he was 28 and from antioch. we also know that last night's crime scene made it hard for neighbors to get home. >> last night i saw a lot of police cars, vehicles right here against this fence. and the streets of california blocked off. >> reporter: the shooting happened last night just after 8:00 with the victim's car

heading west on highway 4 near railroad avenue. the car ran off the road, crashed through a fence, across california and came to rest against another fence. this was the 18th shooting on east bay freeways since november of last year. the majority happened at night, most gang related. police say that means the victim was targeted by the shooter and they weren't random. >> i think a lot of it is also a crime of opportunity, if and when they see somebody they're feuding with on the freeway. it happens there unfortunately. >> reporter: but for those traveling at night, there is concern and the belief that these are crimes of opportunity won't satisfy everyone. >> it's something i have thought of in the past. it could be an innocent person driving by, could get shot as well. >> reporter: the chp is the lead agency in the investigation, although they're getting help from pittsburg police and other local departments. chp is not giving on-camera interviews at this time. some locals we talked to say they aren't living in fear because of the shootings.

>> whatever is going on between him and whoever shot him or something, i mean, i feel safe. >> reporter: eric thomas, abc 7 news. tens of thousands of marijuana smokers crowded into golden gate park to celebrate a counter culture holiday 420. a huge plume of smoke billowed from hippie hill about 45 minutes ago, at 4:20 p.m. sky 7 hd was overhead as the haze wafted over the park. the city increased the number of police officers on duty for what's considered an unsanctioned holiday. officers most live left sell bra i brants alone but targeted children w parents with children. former san jose mayor chuck reed joined pot clubs to oppose measure c on the june ballot. if passed, the measure would allow for dramatic expansion in the number of dispensaries in san jose. opponents say the ballot language will replace the city's pot laws and could allow federal

authorities to raid dispensaries. california water districts are urging state regulators to toss out or relax emergency drought restrictions. the association of california water agencies is making the case to the state water board. the group says the state mandated 25% water reduction is no longer necessary because of conservation efforts and the return to average precipitation in northern california. no decision expected until the board's meeting next month. mixed reaction following a marathon session over rent control in san jose. the city council voted early this morning to approve a new cap on rent increases at 5% a year. but landlords can bank unused increases and tack them on the following year up to 8%. for the first time, a woman, an african-american woman, in fact will be the face of the $20 bill. harriet tub marn wiman will rep andrew jackson. the secretary of the treasury said today she led a life worth

the honor. >> it's an incredible story of changing lives in this country. >> essentially the only time a woman was featured on a bill was martha washington back in the 1880s. abc 7 news reporter leanne melendez joins us live with the look at the effort to make the change. >> reporter: so, you know, other women have graced our currency, for example, susan b. anthony on the $1 coin and, of course, helen keller on the back of the alabama quarter. so this is a very important moment for women. it took a grassroots movement to put a woman on one of the nation's bill. the nonprofit women on 20s conducted a ten-week-long survey. besides harriet tubman the finalists were rosa parks, and -- tubman quickly became the most deserving. eva shepherd wolf is a history professor at san francisco state

university. >> harriet tubman stands for freedom, nobody stands for freedom more than somebody who risked her life multiple times to take people out of slavery to freedom. >> reporter: a slave herself, tubman escaped using the underground railroad, then became its greatest supporter. we decided to test the historical knowledge of some san franciscans. >> well, i guess against slavery. >> slaves in the 18 -- >> underground railroad. >> thank you very much. >> i don't know a whole lot about harriet tubman, but i do know about andrew jackson, and i'm very glad that they're taking him off the $20 bill. >> reporter: while he was the seventh president, jackson was a slave owner and pushed for the indian removal act of 1830. nishlgly, it was hamilton on the $10 bill who was supposed to be removed. but there has been unexpected support for hamilton in part because of the broadway play based on his life and because he was the immigrant son of a single mom. one of the founding fathers and

>> announcer: this is abc 7 news. people are finding them on their cars, their homes, especially in their trees. it's an invasion of sorts on the peninsula. colorful cater pillars. but they can completely defoal yait even a large oak tree. laura anthony is live in menlo park. >> reporter: let's show you the problem here. these are the caterpillars we're talking about. if you can see them, they are all over the place here on the peninsula. they are in the car, on the car

and the tree, which can be an especially difficult problem, especially for those tree that's are already under duress. they look harmless enough, pretty even to some people. but on the peninsula especially, the oak worm is on the attack. >> pests will impact trees at are stressed. >> reporter: david nelson is an arborist with the davey tree company. he says oak worms can completely defoal yat a live oak, especially problematic for one that's endured four years of drought. >> it's a caterpillar basically in its lar val stage that defoal yat trees. they chew leaves. that's how they grow. >> reporter: jamie has a number of beautiful oaks at her home, tree that's survived an oak worm infestation a number of years ago. >> it took the leaves off the trees. it caused them to look like they were dying.

and fortunately they managed to heal themselves without any kind of medication. >> reporter: first sign of trouble, cocoons, lots of them nestled in a tree. once the worms hatch, they climb up and begin to destroy the leaves. >> you have to contact a qualified arborist if it's in your tree. if it's on the structure, that would be a structural pest control operator. >> reporter: if not treated or destroyed, they will eventually turn into moths and fly away, but not before the damage is done. in menlo park, laura anthony, abc 7 news. a new report says california is making progress when it comes to air quality, but it still has a long way to go. the american lung association stated the air report says bakersfield tops the list for having the most unhealthy days in the nation. in fact, the top six places on the list are all in california. you can see them on this map here. the bay area ranks sixth

overall. officials say the drought is a prime contributor to poor air quality. >> you have this kind of bowl effect. you have the inversion layer, pressing air down. and then if there's no rain and u)qs that's are clearing the area, you have pollution that's just sitting there. people are breathing it for days or months at a time. >> los angeles remains the leader in harmful ozone pollution. however, it recorded its fewest unhealthy ozone days since the report was first issued in 2004. well, you can now enjoy a niners game or go to a concert, eat dinner while your car is charging at levi's stadium. that's because of this. abc 7 news in santa clara today as the city showed off its new 49-unit ez charging station in the parking garage. the installation is unique because it uses battery power. that will save people money. >> about 40% of all of our installations include ez charging. in markets like san diego, we're

able to save customers anywhere between $30,000 and $40,000. >> this is the largest public electric vehicle charging center in the state. giants star buster posey is joining another team, the team so defeat childhood cancer. today he and his wife launched an awareness campaign. we are live at at&t. posey got emotional talking about this. >> reporter: he did. it was a pretty moving pregame press conference for buster posey. as you said, he and his wife announcing they're going to focus their fiphilanthropy this season on pediatric cancer, research and treatment. buster saying their passion comes from being parents. >> before i came in here, i said a quick prayer just to get through this without being too emotional because it does mean a lot to me. and my voice is cracking. i've avoided tears so far.

but again, just thanks to everybody for being here and as larry said, i really am looking forward to being impactful, helping people. >> reporter: so that help is going to come in three parts. first of all, fund-raiser. they revealed these limited edition hats that will go on sale, proceeds benefitting kids with cancer. they have a gold ribbon on side for pediatric cancer awareness. awareness is another element of this campaign. buster saying they were very surprised and disappointed to learn that only 4% of funds raided for cancer goes for pediatric cancer. the third element is simple patient and family support, like today there were children and their parents, the children who have cancer, at the news conference. afterward, they were invited out onto the field. they got to meet players and watch some of the warm-up. a very exciting day for those young kids and today's not the

all season long. 1 is light, 5 is severe. the one coming in for friday is a light system, a 1 on our storm impact scale, light to moderate rain expected. it will be breezy and most areas will pick up under a half inch of rain. here is your hour by hour time line. midnight friday we start to see some damp spots. we really head into 3:00 a.m. when the light rain moves into the north bay. it starts to spread during the morning commute. friday morning commute light to moderate rain at 5:00 a.m. 6:00 a.m., east bay parts of the peninsula looking wet. 7:00 a.m. most of the focus in the central bay and south bay. then we head toward the latter part of your day in the afternoon, more scattered showers developing in the north bay friday at 2:00 p.m. evening rush we will see some slick roadways. then the rainfall will staip ta toward friday at 7:00 p.m. in terms of rainfall totals, most areas from a tenth to a third of an inch. fairfield could pick up as much as a half inch of rain. tomorrow morning temperatures in

everyone can use laundry tips especially for clothes that are black and white. >> these are the two most popular colors, but they're tough to keep looking good because they fade. >> 7 on your side michael finney has partnered up with "consumer reports" with some useful advice. >> black and white clothing is classic and stylish. but black dyes can fade if you're not careful and white can turn dingy and gray. to keep your black clothes looking their darkest, only wash them when you have to, says "consumer reports'" pat slaichbz. >> and when you do wash them, wash them with clothes of similar fabric and turn them inside out. >> using cold water helps the fibers from losing color. never, ever put black clothes in the dryer. it roughs up the surface of the
