be immortal. is it true? i feel so empty now. saddened and shocking. good evening, everybody, i'm larry beil. >> i'm ama daetz. tonight a memorial is growing in front of prince's minneapolis home. that is where he was found dead inside of an elevator. authorities say the death is not suspicious. prince had been battling the flu for weeks. thursday, his plane made an emergency landing in illinois so he can be treated. he was hospitalized for three hours. fans in the bay area are some of the last people who saw him in concert. he brought the crowd to its feet at oracle arena last month and a private show in san francisco. vic lee is in the newsroom. his music impacted so many. >> reporter: his music did reach out to a lot of people. generations, in fact. and as you mentioned he was at

tonight at 8:00, san francisco city hall will be bathed in purple lights and maybe washed in purple rain. a grammy winning music producer in the bay area who knew prince says we've lost a musical genius. he is mesmerized by the talent prince possessed. >> drums, keyboard, guitar. sing high, sing low. dance like the don. everything. what couldn't he do? >> reporter: walden let a candle in prince's memory today, saying he would come to the bay area to be inspired by oakland's music scene. today, he has the top five selling songs and four albums. he pulled his music from other streaming sites to i tunes is one of the only places to find

western conference playoffs and could mean the return of steph curry sunday, 12:30 here on abc7. there are new details in the investigation of a murder of a young san francisco mother whose daughter is still missing. police and the fbi show owed us a piece of evidence they hope will convince people to come forward to find the 2-year-old. >> reporter: the investigators believe the two and a half year old ariana investigators unwrapped evidence today, taken from mcclaren park where city workers found nicole's body in a two and a half by three feet deep grave. >> in that shallow hole that you see there, covered by that piece of plywood. it was described as being in the

some san francisco residents won't be sleeping in their homes tonight after a fire damaged buildings in the mission district. you can see the flames. the fire spread from one building to another along 17th street. firefighters tell us nobody was hurt but will take several days to determine what started that fire. a concord man has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after burning a gay pride flag that flew above a church. the 22-year-old was arrested after police say he stole the rainbow flag from in front of clayton valley church and set it on fire. he was arrested soon after. he's charged with arson, theft, and vandalism. more arrests could be made. the bomb squad detonated a pipe bomb in the south bay this afternoon. abc7 news was outside of the

in a martinez courtroom a pittsburgh man faced the accused driver of a car that hit, and killed his wife. he is charged with murder in the death of linda cochran. >> reporter: chavez is remaining in jail on more than $1 million bail. as for jay cochran, he kept his promise two days after his wife died. he was here in the courtroom, sitting front and center trying to catch the eye of her accused killer. >> he didn't see linda's face. he's going to see my face, time

and time again. >> reporter: minutes after seeing the man who allegedly mowed down his wife, jay cochran told us why he felt he needed to be in the front row. >> i'm going to be here every time there is a hearing or any event taking place for that defendant. i'm going to be here. and linda will be with me. >> reporter: 65-year-old linda cochran was killed on tuesday, on a morning walk. cochran just retired, a mother of five, a primary care giver for the couple's two disabled sons. >> my wife -- continuously thought about the family first. >> reporter: the 26-year-old did not enter a plea to charges of murder, vehicular manslaughter and felony evading. police say one of their officers chased the speeding blue cam yaro seconds before it hit cochran, smashed through a fence, and drove several hundred

department's use of force and bias among some officers. one third of bay area adults attended one super bowl 50 event. that is one of the highlights of a new independent report of the impact. the survey found 65% of adults give the super bowl a positive rating, only 8% negatively. for those who attended, traffic was the top inconvenience. 64% were highly receptive to having future big sporting events in the bay area. and crews cleaned up 22,000 pounds of trash left over after yesterday's 4-20 celebration. clean up will cost san francisco taxpayers $25,000. >> the weather warms up and more people flock to beaches to cool off.

marin county firefighters dashed into the water at stinson beach. this is the lesson in the four day course on rescuing swimmers and surfers who find themselves in distress. >> any time you can get in the water to become more familiar you're going to be more successful. >> what we're trying to do is get a basic understanding of our capabilities and what we can, and can't do out there. >> the drills included working with helicopters to spot people in trouble and lift them from the surf. >> let's take a look at the weather. do you have a point you're going to make? >> this is not a good time to go near the surf. but things are going to change. clouds getting thicker now, skies are still bright.
