good morning. i'm ryan smith. >> i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following for you this morning on "world news now." remembering a legend. the sudden death of prince has stunned friends and fans around the world. prince was found unresponsive at his home near minneapolis at the age of 57. we have full coverage on his life and legacy coming up. classes will be held today with grief counselors on hand at a high school in wilmington, delaware, where a 16-year-old student died yesterday after a violent fight in the girl's bathroom. no arrests have been made. the florida man who landed a gyrocopter on the lawn of the capitol to protest the influence of money in politics has been sentenced to four months in prison. doug hughes apologized but said he doesn't regret the flight. and it's earth day. a day to celebrate the environment and fight for its

preservation. events will be held around the world on this friday, april 22nd. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> we begin this half hour with a devastating loss. the sudden death of prince. >> the music icon died in his su bourbon minneapolis home yesterday at 57, but the cause is still a mystery. nasa posted one of the coolest tributes to prince tweeting out this photo of a purple ne beulah. and the apollo theater in har put his name on a marquee along with some of his famous lyrics. >> fans gathered for an all night dance party at the club in minneapolis where prince often performed and also featured in the movie "purple rain." more from abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: a growing memorial here outside of prince's paisley park studios where hundreds are coming with balloons, flowers, their children. various purple items to pay tribute to a legend.

thursday morning at 9:43 a.m., deputies arrived here and found prince's body unconscious inside an elevator. paramedics performed cpr unable to revive him. and at 10:07 a.m., the 57-year-old was pronounced dead. just last week he performed op stage in atlanta. hours later his plane made an emergency landing in illinois. he was rushed to the hospital. his spokeswoman said he was battling the flu. then on saturday, the music icon held an impromptu performance here at his paisley park studio and told the crowd, wait a few days before you waste any prayers. this time authorities are saying they don't believe his death was suspicious. his staff says he was seen by a doctor. now a medical examiner will conduct several tests to determine the cause of death. linsey davis, abc news, chanhassen, minnesota. >> prince was multitalented. think about this, he taught himself to play the guitar, piano and the drums as a child. >> he could also hit the highest falsetto and the deepest baritone, but it's the voice he

abc's cecilia vega has the latest. >> reporter: he is the all-star who famously pitched the red sox to victory, bloody sock and all. >> a perfect fifth inning for curt schilling. >> reporter: but curt schilling smack in the middle of the republican campaign with this social media post. a graphic image showing a man dressed as a woman and the words, "let him into the restroom with your daughter." the post in support of north carolina's law banning transgender people from using bathrooms that do not correspond with the gender on their birth certificates. schilling writing, "a man is a man no matter what they call themselves." >> i stated a fact. men's bathrooms were designed for people that stand up and women's weren't. >> reporter: but schilling, quickly fired from his espn analyst job. and texas senator ted cruz coming to his defense. >> the idea that grown men would be allowed alone in a bathroom with little girls, you don't need to be a behavioral psychologist to realize that bad things can happen. >> reporter: but donald trump now making it clear he doesn't

agree and is against north carolina's bathroom ban. >> you leave it the way it is. there have been very few complaints the way it is. >> reporter: the gop frontrunner saying if a transgender person like caitlyn jenner came into trump tower, she could use any bathroom she wants. cruz pouncing. >> he thought that men should be able to go into the girls' bathroom if they want to. now let me ask you, have we gone stark raving nuts? >> reporter: ted cruz said that donald trump is being, quote, "no different than politically correct leftist elites." trump says the north carolina law hurts businesses. and by some estimates, the boycotts could cost the state tens of millions of dollars. cecilia vega, abc news, philadelphia. across the pond, president obama has arrived in london after his visit to saudi arabia. >> he has a packed royal itinerary for today. checking out what's in store for the president, arlette saenz is live in london. good morning, arlette.

virus. >> if this is allowed to move forward, we won't be the only place they target to test. >> reporter: the scientific community admits it's an experiment, but says it could give authorities a good way to kill the mosquitoes that can carry zika and other diseases. >> the genetically modified male mates with the wild female, and the offspring does not develop into an adult, it dies before adulthood. >> reporter: the signs in nearly every yard say it clearly, the families give "no consent." most of the new bugs are male and will quickly die, but they're still worried because a small amount of these man-made mosquitoes will be the females that bite. their online petition is now 166,000 strong. but the cdc, the fda, and even local officials say this is safe. and researchers are sharing this alarming map. areas around the world where conditions are right for zika to thrive. more than 2.2 billion people at risk. county officials here have agreed to hold a vote on the issue but say they could still move forward no matter the results.

it was a financial and critical failure. that's not a surprise. grossing only $10 million. basically it's really hard to understand what he was going for. >> but really when you think about prince's movies, it's all about "purple rain." prince starred as a struggling musician coping with a tumultuous home life and blos system soming romance. >> and loania was in it which is enough reason for everyone to see it again. prince contributed the title track of the movie. think about this, he won his first and only academy award for the song "purple rain." it rose to number two on the billboard chart. impromptu block party outside of his home in brooklyn. more than 1,000 people showed up. looks like a lot more from that picture. cramming the streets to sing and dance to prince's music in celebration of his life. lee said he just saw prince two weeks ago and he looked fine. and prince earned seven grammy awards, an oscar and a spot in the rock & roll hall of fame. >> he battled his label for his music and even his own name and won. for more insight on prince's legacy, we're joined now on the phone by music industry insider bruno del granado. good morning, bruno. thanks for being with us. >> good morning, diane. good morning, ryan. >> i want to start now on his career because a lot of people don't realize what kind of musician he was and how early this started. he played just about every instrument out there. talk about the beginning and how this all started for him. >> well, prince was signed when he was 18 years old to warner brothers records. and he released his debut album following year. here is an artist brand new and

is allowed to use his own songs, his own compositions. played all the instruments on the album and produced his record himself. unheard of up till prince did it. and he loved that freedom of doing everything himself in the studio and handing in a finished master that he wouldn't have it any other way. so he certainly was a trendsetter for that for artists controlling their musical destinies from early on. >> bruno, so many of us admired prince for his musical genius, for his ability to span across genres and really excel at pretty much everything he did. we know very little about the man. what do you know about prince? what kind of man was he? what kind of person was he? to his band mates and people who encountered him. i know you met him before. >> prince was obsessed with music. music was his life. and it was funny because you would go to a prince concert. it would be a three-hour religious affair. next thing you know, an hour later everybody's telling you go to a small club because prince is going to do another set and

another one after that. he lived for music. i think music was the thing that drove him throughout his life. he constantly pushed the envelope musically and even though he did have somewhat of a career on the acting side and we saw it in "purple rain" and "under the cherry moon" and several other films, his love was music. more than anything being on stage. i think he loved the studio but being on stage was a religious experience. and nothing, nothing could supersede that for him. to this day, we have never read a bad review of a prince concert ever, ever, ever. >> and bruno, for many artists who kind of tried to push the envelope, like you said, there tends to be pushback in the beginning. what was the reception like for him when he first started and wanted to do all these things on his own and wanted to dress in his way and wanted to kind of be so unconventional? >> well, with the first big single "i want to be your lover," people didn't know if he was a man or a woman.

he pushed the boundaries on gender, sexuality and even race back in the '70s when this was completely unheard of. and he was the opening act for the rolling stones in 1981 tour. he was booed off stage because he was so unique and so original. nobody really understood what he was all about. eventually people realized that we were witnessing somebody who was even greater than most of his peers around him. >> yeah, and we're looking right now at video from the super bowl. tell us about that and what kind of a turning point that was in his career. >> well, we hadn't heard from prince in several years. his big comeback was the super bowl. to this day, it's the probably most acclaimed super bowl halftime performance we've ever seen there. he covered bob dylan and the foo fighters, his own music, as well. it was a rainy night in miami. and prince just pulled all stops

>> the idea that grown men would be allowed alone in a bathroom with little girls, you don't need to be a behavioral psychologist to realize that bad things can happen. >> critics however say cruz is offensively assuming all transgender men and women are child molesters. north carolina's so-called bathroom law prompted calls for an economic boycott of the state. on the democratic side, hillary clinton has a message for supporters of bernie sanders. support her if she gets the democratic nomination. during yesterday's town hall on "gma" she said she hopes his supporters will back her the way that her supporters backed obama back in 2008 after she with drew from the race. meantime, clinton is still being dogged by her use of a private e-mail server while secretary of state. fbi director james comey says there's no timetable for the fbi to complete its investigation. comey is hinting that it cost more than $1 million to hack into the san bernardino's

shooters iphone. he didn't give a precise number but said it was more than i will make in the remainder of his job which is seven years and four months for sure. he added he thought the payment was, "worth it." we have new details in another high profile hack, the cheating website ashley madison. the massive hack revealed data on more than 32 million users kwho had been assured anonymity. >> now a judge says anyone suing the site cannot do it anonymously. the class action suit claimed the website failed to adequately protect its information. 42 of the lead plaintiffs had wanted to keep their identities a secret. this is an interesting issue because in lawsuits here, you have the right to confront your accuser. same in criminal trials. they like to enforce the same in civil cases. here, if you're hiding behind some name and the person you're suing can't identify you, that's a problem. i think that's why the judge ruled in their favor. >> there are cases where they make exceptions to that. the judge said in this case while obviously coming forward

that school will have a short day of classes today. >> counselors will be on hand for students who need them. several students are considered persons of interest in the case as abc's mary bruce reports. >> reporter: a shocking scene at a delaware high school. a 16-year-old girl critically injured after a fight with two other female students. >> howard high school for a 15-year-old female, stomach and head pain. >> reporter: paramedics make a desperate attempt to save the sophomore, performing cpr and putting her on a helicopter to a nearby hospital. it was 8:15 a.m. at the highly regarded howard high school of technology. classes not yet under way when that violent clash broke out in the women's restroom. one witness says during the fight the student hit her head on a sink. she died later at the hospital. >> this is an unforeseen and unbelievable tragedy for the family. >> reporter: the mayor speaking at a press conference, unable to

as crowds gathered to honor prince, a rain doe appeared in the sky over his home. fans are celebrating his life in the streets of minneapolis. abc's dan harris is there. >> reporter: hello from downtown minneapolis where there is a massive street party going on in honor of a native son who became pop music royalty, prince, of course. thousands of people listening to prince songs in these streets that have been shut down. they're singing along and when the action winds down in the street, it's going to move inside this club, the first avenue club. an iconic club in downtown minneapolis a place where prince himself performed many times. it was also the backdrop for some of the scenes in the classic movie "purple rain." there's a lot of the celebration. there's also an under current of sadness. people here loved prince. he was of course beloved all over the world and all over the country, but this was his hometown. he could have lived anywhere, but he chose to stay here. for that people are very proud. they used to see him in the local supermarkets. outside of prince's home and studio paisley park, people have
