>> wow, that just gives you chills. so beautiful and so many other tributes pouring in from around the world. minneapolis, lighting their bridge purple. the superdome changing color, just some of the many tributes this morning and here's my favorite one, take a live look at this, yeah, that is an all night dance party that's now turned into a morning jam session. it's at the first avenue theater in minneapolis where prince famously performed and you can see at this hour this is a live shot. that party still going on strong. >> i think that would be his favorite tribute, as well. he always stayed so close to his hometown. much more of the celebration of his life ahead. we do begin with the mystery surrounding his death found in an elevator at his home and dan harris is outside paisley park in chanhassen with the latest, good morning, dan. >> reporter: good morning, police are trying to figure out a man who hosted a dance party on saturday night died just days later.

meanwhile, the city of minneapolis reacting to the news of the passing of a beloved and often mysterious local icon with a mixture of sadness and celebration. ♪ purple rain >> reporter: overnight thousands celebrating his life with a massive street party in downtown minneapolis and all night dance party at the famed first avenue club. ♪ purple rain ♪ purple rain purple rain >> reporter: where prince performed so many times and at paisley park paying respects where prince lived and worked. >> i didn't believe it. he was just here saturday. >> reporter: at paisley park, 7801 audubon road, person down not breathing. >> reporter: this morning, the mystery, sheriff's deputies responded to the artist's home where they found 57-year-old prince rogers nelson

unresponsive in an elevator that led to his living quarters. they attempted cpr but couldn't revive him. just seven days ago his private jet made an emergency landing in moline, illinois, hours after he performed two shows in atlanta. at the time prince's camp said he had the flu and left the hospital just three hours after being admitted. the next day in an apparent attempt to show his fans he was all right, he tweeted that he was having a dance party at paisley park during that party he reportedly told the crowd wait a few days before you waste any prayers. raising even more questions about what happened to this man beloved around the world and most fervently here in his hometown. what brings you down here tonight? >> prince, i mean, i love the man. it's been such a huge inspiration to me. huge part of this city. >> reporter: back here live at paisley park where the staff told authorities prince had seen a doctor the day before he died.

to it in headphones and sit here and just be here in minneapolis and it's unreal. it's surreal. i miss him dearly. it's very devastating and he's done so much for music. he's created music that no one has ever done before. he had his own sound and he did it for the people. did it for the fans. he's done everything for them. >> sheila, were you aware that prince had been having health problems? >> well, to me he is like an athlete and, you know, athletes trained and they get injured and, you know, we know that he's had issues with, you know, his hips. if you look back in the days of "purple rain" when he was on top of risers and jumping down off risers in those heels, you know, it damaged, you know, parts of his body so i know we're always injured when we play on stage.

we're getting hurt all the time so i don't know anything other than that. >> let's go back to some happier times. you met in 1978 and is it true he wanted to marry you from the moment you met? >> yes. i met him at one of his first concerts during his very first record and he played in the bay area in oakland, california, and when i went backstage to introduce myself to him, he said him and the bass player were fighting to which one was going to marry me first. >> and he proposed to you on stage? >> yeah, that was years later but, yes. >> tell us about that moment. >> well, it was special. it was during "purple rain" and i was playing drums at the time and he turned around and looked at me and asked me to marry him. and i said yes. >> you know, for such a public man he led a remarkably private

life as well and what do you want the public to know about him that we may not know? >> he was a private person, everyone knows that and there's things that we have shared him and i together that will never -- people will never know. they are our own moments and for the fans, you know, all i can say is that as much as you loved him he loved them even more. his life was music and he gave everything his all to create music as paisley is a dynasty it's a museum. it's a place where he created and for the fans to know that, i know they know that. we all feel the same way in how he wrote amazing music for all of us to enjoy. that will be here forever. >> certainly will. sheila e., thank you for joining us this morning. we'll have much more on prince's influence, performances coming up later in the show. >> cannot wait for that.

comeback from an off-track injury he's already causing a blow-out among race fans and officials. >> it should be outperforming the other teams, not jeopardizing drivers' lives. >> reporter: taking nascar to task over a new policy loosening restrictions on pit crews who mount tires with one or more of their lug nuts missing. >> they're putting competition before safety and that's something i can't believe that nascar has let happen. >> reporter: the three-time sprint cup champion is no stranger to controversy. famously brawling in the pits and in the stands. >> i've made a career out of doing things i wasn't supposed to do. >> reporter: in 2014 an alleged confrontation with a fellow dirt track racer led to stewart's car hitting and killing kevin ward jr. the crash ruled an accident and stewart was never charged with a crime. but now smoke is drawing the line at the nascar rule change which took effect last season telling "the charlotte observer," "you will not have heard a rant that's going to be as bad as what comes out of my mouth if a driver gets hurt because of a loose wheel that hurts one of them."

classmates gathered at a vigil last night for a sophomore, amy joyner, who was air-lifted to the hospital but later died from her injuries. police are investigating reports that that fight may have been over a boy. well, there are new concerns about safety ahead of the summer olympics in rio. a newly built bike lane collapsed into the ocean on thursday killing two people. this just adds to a long list of worries surrounding preparations for the games including political turmoil and budget cuts. well, more tough times at sears, that company closing 68 of its kmart stores nationwide and ten more sears stores because of slow sales. that's in addition to 50 store closures recently announced. well, the u.s. army is investigating a mishap during this training exercise in germany. the video shows three humvees crashing to the ground. look at that. the massive military vehicles were supposed to float down with parachutes but they broke free. each humvee cost $200,000. well, a moving tribute has

been unveiled to the tuskegee airmen of world war ii, and our very own robin roberts and her sister sally-ann helped open a new exhibit in new orleans dedicated to the trailblazing men who were the first african-american fighter pilots. robin shared memories of her father's time in the service. >> and i remember my father just beaming, and he had his red jacket on, and i talked to him about his experience, and he said he never felt more free than when he was in that plane flying. >> the two retired airmen now 90 and 96 years old attended the ceremony where a newly restored plane was unveiled. and we have new details on the injuries suffered by "dancing with the stars'" contestant jodie sweetin. she injured her foot during rehearsals while trying to re-create a dance once performed by pink. ooh. you heard that scream. sweetin is now resting her foot and taking things day by day. we certainly wish her well in her recovery. that looked painful.

kate coyne is here, executive editor of "people" magazine. chris connelly is here with us, as well this morning from los angeles. but, deborah, let me begin with you. you saw a lot of it there in your piece. so many talented people wanted to work with prince. >> it was so obvious i think that he had a golden gut. this guy would touch people and they would become superstars. i remember being at madison square garden and watching misty copeland dancing to prince's music and that was before the world really knew who she was and then a few years later she's now this superstar. i think he just had a way of touching people. >> the midas touch. >> yes, exactly. >> and being able to spot true talent. >> very early on. >> yeah. i want to bring in chris connelly from los angeles. chris, can you talk to us about prince's impact on mtv? >> well, michael jackson sort of kicked the door down for african-american artists on mtv but he was the king of pop. prince along with everything else was a rock star. he played the guitar. he had a scary attitude towards sexuality in the idea of a lot of people. he was dangerous. he just didn't look like what some people thought a rock star

should look like. when he opened for the rolling stones out here in '81, he got booed off the stage and it took people a while to understand how great he was and by the time people really got to see everything he could do, his videos became a staple of mtv. >> picking up on what chris was saying, much like david bowie, he did push the boundaries of gender and sexuality. >> absolutely. chris is right. he didn't look the way a rock star looked. if you look back at the bruce springsteens or jim morrisons of the world, there was a certain masculine swagger that those guys had that prince was not interested in and yet he stayed incredibly sexy, i think, while also, you know, breaking all these rules, wearing high heels, lace. >> lots of eyeliner. >> ruffles. eyeliner. i mean, you know, and yet, and yet he was undeniably a sex symbol. >> yeah, i remember -- i'm dating myself here -- when "little red corvette" came out trying to interpret what that song really meant sort of being like and it was taboo.

>> or "purple rain" for a lot of us was our first r-rated movie. a pretty sexy movie and it's pretty sort of heterosexual. >> without a doubt. >> he's having some fun with the ladies in that film. >> gender bending all the time. >> and not seeming to care. he was doing it his way. also a humanitarian, deborah. >> i think that's the one thing people are going to learn about him. we knew he was a genius but people will find out too he was quietly a humanitarian. he gave money to trayvon martin's family quietly and would do concerts for people, cancer survival kind of benefits and he gave all kinds of money. i heard this morning the dance theater of harlem he gave $250,000 to. nobody even knew that. he really cared about college bound initiatives and things like that but he didn't really need the acclaim. he just jumped in quietly behind the scenes and did that. and we'll learn more about that in the coming days. >> chris, his faith was very important to him. seventh day adventist and then a jehovah's witness and then heard from the "rolling stones" writer

>> it's easy. >> he couldn't be deader. >> yeah. >> all right. now, a lot of people are jealous. we recently did a news report that president obama has -- >> i heard of that. >> been able to watch all of season 6 before the rest of us. >> yes. >> do you get sneak meeks. >> no, but i'm not the president. i guess it gives you some kind of leverage when you call the show and say can i have a sneak peek? >> he's pretty good at keeping secrets too, i'm guessing. >> you would hope so, right. >> no one wants any spoilers, especially not me. but i understand even when you guys are doing, you know, scenes that the show runners, the producers actually have code names for your characters so nothing gets out. >> well, yes, and then this season was just crazy. >> you would get scripts are with the code names were there but i didn't know the code names so suddenly there was like a whole new character and i was like who is this person i'm having dialogue? >> you don't know what your code name is. >> well, no, no -- well, i was

still jamie. jamie is just jamie but all characters were like big secrets that would appear but also they did that thing with the call sheet you get out every day where it says where people are supposed to be. they use code names and numbers there but they forgot to tell everybody about it so it became very complicated. >> complicated once again. how would you want jamie lannister to die? >> i don't want him to die. that's a really bad thing to say. >> everyone die, don't they? it kind of feels like that. >> he might already be dead. we already shot season 6. >> i hear you are turning the tables on me and have questions to see if i could answer. >> i was told you know so much about it. i have some quotes from characters. you have to name the character. when you play the "game of thrones," you win or you die. >> oh that's easy. sir xi lanster. >> that's true. you know nothing jon snow. >> i can't think of her name. the redhead. the love of his life. what's her name?

chopped garlic. >> okay. >> okay, to this we'll add fresh jalapeno and i love this because it reinforces the flavor of the king's hawaiian jalapeno rolls. a little bit of fresh lime and have this doo-dad right here. >> i always wanted those. >> you could get the aaron sanchez one. >> available in stores now. >> yeah, absolutely. no, then we'll start with a little bit of olive oil, as well. this is a really important tip for everybody at home is that when you cook, grilling a steak or chicken or something like that, really put some oil on the product first because that al w allows the seasoning aadhere. if you were just to put it on without any oil on it the salt or seasoning or rub would just bounce off. so that's it. simplicity, beautiful, the jalapeno, olive and garlic. i have some here and marinated. i like to let it sit for an hour. >> you don't have to do it overnight. i don't have time for that.

i didn't remember yesterday. ooh. >> nice sear, one thing you want to cook medium rare. i have some here i've gone ahead an done and remove this. >> how much time to get them medium rare. >> about five minutes on each side. i like it that way. this is the other tip i want everyone at home to pick up on. so now i have all that residual flavor from the grilling and that marinade, okay. i'm not going to let that go down, right. so what i'm going to do, take some of the hajalapeno rolls an toast them and pick up all that flavor in the sweetness in the roll and start to assemble the sliders. >> we have a dessert. >> this is a bread pudding so forget all the traditional challah. so bread pudding, a little bit of bread pudding and nice scoop of ice cream and you're a happy larn. >> aaron, thank you for being here and thanks for making these. you can get all these recipes on
