>> it is sunday, april 24th. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen in for carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's frances dinglasan. she's in for lisa argen. hi, frances. >> hi, chris. clouds in the south and in san jose, as well. it will be a windy day, in fact a wind advisory is in effect. it starts at 3:00 this afternoon and continues until midnight. we will see winds from the northwest, about 20 to 30 miles per hour, but they can gust up to 350 miles per hour so the areas along the coast highlighted in yellow and all around the bay. that's where we need to look out for possible downed trees, possible downed powerlines that could lead to local power outages. you want to strap anything down or keep your garbage cans safe

fire department said the man was able to wade closer to short but it took the help of the fire department, the beach lifeguards and coast guard to bring him back safely. >> it's been extremely dangerous conditions this season. it's always dangerous but we had an el nino and we had a lot of high surf advisories almost every weekend. >> the fire department says beach goers have underestimated the strength of the waves until it's too late. >> a special mass today for the two 17-year-old boys who disappeared last weekend from ocean beach. the rescue and search was called after after the two were separated by their friends by the treacherous surf. a special mass will be held to the add saint the katheryn of sienna. a big fire raced through an electronics recycling center in

gilroy last night. this video shows how intense it was. broke out around 6:00 last night on meat tech building. you can see the smoke pouring from the visibility that was visible for miles. sky hd was overhead showing crews hitting hotspots with water. the fire was brought under control within an hour and a half, but investigators are still trying to determine how many damage it caused. oakland firefighters rescued a man inside this home that caught fire yesterday morning. we are told a man was trapped inside on the second story, but firefighters were able to use the ladder to bring him down safely. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> a stretch of sacramento street is back in operation after crews patched a large sinkhole. yesterday afternoon workers poured concrete into the crevasse. a broken sewer pipe caused the street to cave in on thursday.

the crews spent two days fixing it. a death toll from the massive earthquake in ecuador is now at 654 people with hundreds more missing. one of the bay area's leading seismic experts is flying there to help assess the damage. he spoke with sergio quintana, who also talked with the bay area couple who survived the earthquake. >> seismic expert is on his way to lend his expertise to the effort. >> one of the most important aspects of an event like this is a damage assessment. in many cases the government just can't handle that because it's a widespread earthquake. >> these are pictures from two residents were there when the quake struck. >> it lasted 49 seconds and some people said it was 65 seconds. it didn't end. we were on the streets and it was continuing to roll. >> alice and bill were vacationing there.

really having like an old-fashioned fun event, and they get really excited about it. >> just put a lid on it. >> he said this will be his last year at the helm, but he hopes volunteers will step up to continue the tradition. his announcement inspired alumni to come out and show their sport, including this woman who flew in from seattle to give him a hug. >> i said i have to come there. memories of my fifth grade. i'm here. >> you ask kids when we went to school what was the favorite activity for the school, and they will tell you it was the frog jump. >> a community coming together to say thank you to a man who made learning fun. the winner of the sutter frog jump moves to the calaveras county frog jump contest. in other news, the pittsburgh unified school district estimates 200 showed up for the job fair yesterday. they are trying to fill positions in science and math.

and i believe education and they are eligible for a signing bonus. teachers who graduated from the district are also eligible for the bonus. >> it's a great place to work. we have a great, diverse community. it's a booming area and affordable housing. we've been able to attract and bring on some great people here in pittsburgh. >> the district is also looking to fill other positions, like bus drivers, substitute teachers, clerical and cafeteria workers. also in pittsburgh, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new play structure. the park had been without a playground since 2010 when vandals destroyed it. about 60 parents came together to form the group. it assesses the city's 63 parks and determined this one was the most in need. the city council allocated $50,000 for the new play structure. bay area housing prices have certainly rebounded since the recession. but fear of another collapse in the market has been building. as abc news reporter alyssa harrington found out, bay area experts are saying they are

seeing signs of a slow down. >> on california's forever moving roller coaster, home sales in the bay area are up from last month, but down from last year. a report found a slow down in almeda county from over 11300 -- 1300 homes sold in march of 2015 to 1200 in march of 2016. numbers are also down in san francisco county where sky high prices are pushing buyers out. there's an increase in contra costa county. i asked christopher palmer, assistant professor of real estate, if this is any case a housing bubble is about to burst. >> anytime there's a flattening or softening, people wants to say this is the beginning of the send and it's really hard to know that, but it doesn't seem like that at this point. >> the realtor said that is not unusual. the inventory is low. >> coming up january, february, march they tend to go down. they come up in the spring and around august, september they will starting to down again. it's typical.

>> the study also finds 1.4% growth in median home prices, the smallest gain in years. homes are on the market a new -- few weeks longer than usual. he said there's a reason for that. >> buyers are wanting to still get a bargain. when they are looking at prices these aren't jumping on a price right away. >> how much are moments going for these days? the median price last month $643,000. in berkeley, alyssa harrington. abc7 news. >> runners are getting ready for the big sur is international marathon. the hardest part of the race the runners say is keeping their eyes on the road because of the fantastic scenery along highway 101. the first runners start in about 30 minutes. time now is 6:17. frances, i'm sure the runners are breathing a sigh of relief

that the winds will hold off for now in terms of the -- you know, how hard it's going to be, like later this afternoon. >> yeah. especially along the coast. that's where the winds will pick up and that's where we have a wind advisory right now. it's pretty calm and also cool and cloudy, especially for runners and it will be comfortable for them this morning. here's a look at live doppler 7hd showing cloudy conditions toward the sunny part of the bay area from sfo down toward san jose and into hospital ray where it's clear now is in the north bay like santa rosa and that's where we are seeing the cooler numbers. from sutro we are looking out at golden gate bridge. a beautiful day, but hold open to your hats. right now temperatures in san francisco, 53. oakland 54. mountain view 55, as well as san jose and morgan hill 52 and half moon bay at 354 degrees. the time we are looking from the east bay out towards the bay bridge and the new span in san francisco. here's what you need to know. it will be very gusty this

afternoon and this evening. windy again tomorrow. although not as bad. then a chance of rain midweek. i'll show thaw forecast animation in just a little bit. so here are the wind gusts this morning. you will notice they start to pick up. the areas of yellow show you the stronger wind gusts and even into orange by 3:00 this afternoon. the wind advisory take place and we will see 37 miles per hour point reyes, each 20 miles per hour in san jose. still breezy, as well, farther inland like livermore at 17. winds will pick up and be the strongest along the coast around 7:00 to 8:00 tonight, even into 10:00 where we will see 43 miles per hour in point reyes, 46 half moon bay and 22 miles per hour in oakland. the wind advisory does expire at about 12:00 tonight. but we could see gusts up to 50 miles per hour. now the forecast animation also shows the clouds just sliding through the bay area from the north and then clearing out by tonight. so we will see some cooler overnight temperatures with those clear skies.

so today a breezy day with temperatures mainly in the 60s. in fact, it's only going to be 63 in san francisco. 65 in richmond. napa 68, as well as in san jose with some of those clouds passing through. overnight lows in the 40s and cooler, as well, in some of the valleys, especially the north bay like napa at 42, santa rosa 42 and morgan hill, as well. milder along the coast and around bait with 48 in san francisco and 48 in san mateo. here's our chance of rain. just to give you an idea. i think the rain chances are actually dropping. now i'm giving you the 30% chance on wednesday. and the forecast animation shows the areas of light green, the rain passing through in pockets around maybe the coast and parts of the north bay. then clearing out by thursday. here's a look at the week ahead in san jose. we've got that chance of rain wednesday. notice hour temperatures are a little bit below normal dipping into wednesday. but then we are going to see a

down, 11:00 p.m. tonight it will still be very breezy out there. wind advisory does expire at midnight. and notice the clouds pushing in from the northwest. we are getting the cool air. so temperatures are open the cool side. we are below average in many areas. in san jose 68 degrees the high for today. still breezy as well inland. very windy at the coast with 59 in half moon bay, 63 san francisco and 66 degrees in oakland with a clearer skies overnight and temperatures were going to cool down into the h.'s. so with he will be cool in oakland and fremont the 46. look for 42 in napa tomorrow morning, as well as in morgan hill. milder in san mateo and san francisco at 48 degrees. here's a look at the chance of rain for the week ahead. so it was dry the next few days, but there's a chance of rain on wednesday. a 30% chance right now. so let's go with the latest model. the areas of light green show where we could see some light rain on the north bay but some areas night not get any rain at

all. thursday we are waking up to sunny skies. here's look at the week ahead. temperatures, for example, in san jose, the average high is 72. we are below average and look at the climb wednesday with the chance of rain all the way into saturday. we are going to see a land breeze and warm winds, so that means the accuweather seven day forecast will see some 80s return to inland areas where we will be well above average. so look for temperatures to be slightly below normal into wednesday and just have that jacket ready because it's going to be a windy day today. hang on to your hats, and tomorrow as well. >> the always-changing bay area forecast. >> yeah. microclimates everywhere. >> frances, thank you. a texas man is recovering in san francisco after a groundbreaking surgery. doctors at ucsf transplanted a joint from one part of his body to another so he can use his arm again. and as abc7's cheryl jennings reports, the unusual surgery was the patient's own idea.

>> for ritchie cook, holding his young nephew on his lap is a struggle. the car accident shattered the elbow in his right arm and destroyed the function in his left. he approached his doctor with an idea. what if we take this bone from this elbow and use it in this elbow? >> reggie's doctor contacted a former colleague, lisa, an orthopaedic surgeon at ucsf with the idea of transplanting his undamaged elbow from the arm that didn't work to the one that could. >> i said, well, i don't think that's been done before, but all of the component parts have been done before, so let me think about it. so if we moved -- >> the doctor began with ct scans that were turned into specialized 3d computer models. they allowed doctors to carefully plot out the potential surgery. after deciding it was possible. she assembled a team of plastic

surgeons and experts in vascular surgery. >> it was like a ballet going on. everybody knew their part, everybody did exactly what they should do at exactly the right moment. >> over the next 11 hours two teams worked in tandem, taking care to preserve muscle surrounding tissues and blood vessels. they severed the bones on either side of the working elbow and began transplanting it to his right arm, carefully reconstructing the tendons and reorienting the bones to fit. >> everything is mirror image and backwards so that was going to be the challenging parts. how do we hook up the bones that are backwards. >> the this was the result. reggie is still able to move his hand and fingers. blood flow in his right arm is also normal. the hope now is when the joint heels he will be able to lift objects with his right arm and possibly much more. >> oh, my independence, i can't wait to be independent.
