we begin with some strange bedfellows in the race for the white house. there's kind of surprising collaboration in the works aimed at stopping donald trump. >> ted cruz and john kasich have joined forces in hopes of denying trump the gop nomination. and as voters in five states head to the polls tomorrow, trump's rivals have cut a deal that could affect the next week's contests and the republican convention. it's "your voice, your vote." we get the latest from kenneth moton. >> reporter: good morning. yes, this is a major strategic shift in the stop trump movement. and it's a taste of what will likely happen if all three men head to the republican national convention. kasich, cruz, coordinating to take down trump. >> i got to get rid of these two guys. i'm sorry, folks. >> reporter: gop front-runner donald trump campaigning in maryland, one of the five states he's expected to sweep tomorrow in the northeast. so ted cruz and john kasich are moving on to the may contests.

strategizing together. >> god bless the great state of indiana. >> reporter: the two campaigns sent out similar statements. cruz is focusing time and resources in indiana. kasich is moving his attention out west, to oregon and new mexico. the ohio governor told cbs' "face the nation" his goal is to have an open convention in cleveland. >> i think when weir at the convention, the delegates will want to know who can beat hillary. >> reporter: trump furious, the billionaire fired off on twitter. "wow, just announced that lyin' ted and kasich are going to collude to keep me from getting the republican nomination. desperation." >> i'm just working hard to win on tuesday. >> reporter: a confident hillary clinton may be quietly starting to search for a vp. but her democratic rival bernie sanders is still making a lot of noise -- promising to stay in the race. >> what this campaign is really about is for all of us together to take on the status quo. >> reporter: clinton is ahead in all five states voting tomorrow.

as for the republicans, kasich has canceled all of his campaign events in indiana tomorrow as he and cruz work together to take down trump. diane and ryan. >> kenneth moton, live in washington, thank you. well, millions of americans are bracing for severe weather to start the week off especially in the plains. >> all types of storms are likely, including tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds. some of the heaviest rain will fall on areas that have already experienced flooding. the storm system will be a threat into wednesday. >> one tornado has already touched down near the kansas/nebraska border. reports say it was on the ground for a few minutes last night and it caused any minor damages to trees and there are no reports of injuries. >> and across the border in northern kansas, large hail falling from the skies, at least two people were injured. one man hit in the head. >> the weather threat will also remain today but this is just the beginning. >> abc senior meteorologist rob marciano says there's an even bigger threat looming tomorrow.

>> over the next week or so, we're getting into this pattern, where every couple of days we're going to see a tornado threat. on tuesday, more of the ingredients are coming together for a tornado risk right in the heart of tornado alley. we'll pump up the humidity and bring in some jet stream energy and the potential for very large if not violent tornadoes. could be the most serious threat this season. >> more from rob on "good morning america." overseas now, where the u.s. is adding more military might in the battle against isis. president obama is ordering 250 additional military personnel to syria to help local forces there. most of those being deployed are members of the army special forces. >> they're not going to be leading the fight on the ground, but they will be essential in providing the training and assisting local forces they continue to drive isil back. as we remain relentless on the military front we're not going to give up on the dip lo masy front to end the syrian war.

>> president obama is making the announcement today in germany, he's wrapping up a week-long trip that focused a lot on energy and defeating isis. the world may soon get a glimpse of a secret chapter of the september 11th investigation. the white house could release at least some of the 28 pages into the congressional inquiry of the 9/11 attacks. it could shed light on possible saudi connections. the documents have been kept in a secure room in the capital. a teenager has been charged with plotting a terror attack in australia. the 16-year-old boy was arrested at his home in sydney, accused of trying to target an australian veterans day ceremony expected to take place today. five teens were arrested in 2015 for plotting an isis-inspired attack on the same event. mental health professionials are seeking the repeal of the

so-called bathroom law. they have signed a letter to the governor over a law that bans transgender people from using the bathroom of the gender they identify with. the group says lgbt students have lower self-esteem and higher levels of suicide attempts. we're getting our first look at the new official logo of the 2020 tokyo olympics. >> organizers have chosen a simple indigo and white checkered circle. the original design was scraped last year amid claims of plagarism. the selection was made from almost 15,000 entries. the designer put a lot of time and energy into the project like it was his own child. it looks good. still ahead -- cvs pulling a product off the shelves because of salmonella concerns. and big questions that remain over prince's death. the unique state law that could have a judge stepping in to decide who gets his massive fortune. and happening now, a man hunt is under way after eight family members are found dead. we have new details this morning about why investigators think this was all preplanned.

investigators are trying to figure out what sparked this raging fire at an apartment construction site in the phoenix suburb. the fire got so hot it actually melted a portion of the road. residents who live across the street returned to find many of their homes damaged by smoke and water. this morning, a battle could be brewing over prince's fortune because of a law in minnesota. it's still unclear if the late singer had a will. estimates put his estate as high as $800 million. and prince leaves behind no wife or children. so, in minnesota, if there's no will, half-siblings are entitled

johnny manziel has reportedly been indicted for assaulting his ex-girlfriend. it's expected to be announced today in dallas. the alleged beating occurred in january, and since then the 23-year-old heisman trophy winner has also been accused of trashing a los angeles home during a party and has been cut by the cleveland browns. a british astronaut has completed the london marathon despite being out of the country. >> oh, yeah. >> way out of the country. he's above the country, in the international space station. >> he ran a 26.2-mile race just like that, harnessed to a treadmill. a simulation of the route through london played on an ipad. he finished just over 3:30 hours. giving new meaning to the term runner's high. >> i wonder if it's easier or harder to run at zero gravity. >> it looks like it's harder. time now for sports. the los angeles lakers are parting ways with their coach. >> that's right, the team fired byron scott overnight. in his two years as head coach he won just 38 games.
