should be a big night for the two front huntrun runners, the rivals turned allies have mixed messages. >> this is the only campaign that can and will beat trump and then clinton. >> reporter: kasich and cruz who promised to stay out of each other's way seemingly having different thoughts. their goal was to slab rate to stop donald trump from clinching the 1237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination. that strategy has trump once again setting his eyes on the general election. >> folks, they ought to both drop out of the race so we can unify the republican party. >> reporter: even suggesting in a tweet democrat bernie sanders run as an independent. sanders is facing an uphill battle with four out of the five states voting today being closed primaries meaning independents

cannot vote. sanders has yet to win a single closed primary, but sanders is vowing to fight on. >> we're in until the last vote is cast. pe people of california have a right to determine who they want to be president of the united states. >> i have the greatest respect for senator sanders but really what he and his supporters are now saying just doesn't add um. i have 2.7 million more votes than he has. >> reporter: in fact, with the polls showing both clinton and trump favored to do well in the five states voting today, most of the candidates have already moved on and their focus is on the next big state to vote, which is indiana. we are live in philadelphia, i'm elizabeth hur for abc 7 news. >> elizabeth, the outcome tonight could be crucial for democrats. what's next for sanders should clinton do as well as she's expected to? >> reporter: that's the big question of the day. of course sanders says he's sick and tired of being asked that.

where you live with the abc 7 news app. download it for free. we are learning more about a disturbing message left behind inside the san jose home of a murdered couple. >> family members found the bodies sunday. police have said it was not a murder/suicide but they aren't saying much else. >> melanie woodrow is live at san jose police headquarter was the latest on this case. melan melanie? >> reporter: san jose police have not released any suspect information. a source says that whoever is responsible left more than one message inside the home. bouquets of flowers line the driveway of an evergreen couple killed in their home sunday. friends describe the couple as kind and generous. >> so that's why this is difficult to reconcile to the tragic violence and to such simple, gentle souls. >> reporter: friends and family

members found the couple's bodies sunday. they entered the home through an open door after having not heard in the couple in days. whoever shot the couple may have targeted them. a source says someone wrote in ink on the hardwood floor "sorry my first kill was clumsy." and another note scrawled on the wall was directed to the couple's oldest son and included "i can't be like you telling "lie." i can't love someone without telling them. according to the source, the note also said "his mother begged for her life." the couple were devoted members of the evergreen islamic center. >> we are surprised that they are no longer with us. especially going away in such a manner, something that we can't come to grips with. >> reporter: the two were an engineer and accountant. the couple has a son in high school and the other in college. the children were not home this weekend. in the south bay, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. a text message scandal

involving san francisco police officers is growing. the public defender's office today released a new batch of racist and homophobic messages allegedly sent by officers. this marks the second time in as many years these messages have been revealed. the texts were found on former officers jason lie's personal cell phone. he resigned from the police department earlier this month. in one text, lie wrote, they're all drug dealers in the tl, tender loin. we'll have reaction from the police chief on abc 7 news at 5:00. in san francisco, dmron straighters will hold a rally calling for the resignation of police chief and the mayor. we are outside the mission state today as protesters continued their hunger strike. some are in the seventh day of not eating. they're striking following controversial police shootings. >> we need to change what's happening in this city that they are murdering the young black

and brown men that we have here. we have to stop it. >> police have threatened to arrest and cite protesters. tonight's rally will be held outside the mission police station. faculty at city college of san francisco are set to go on a one-day strike tomorrow. abc 7 news was at the college's chi chinatown campus when the union, faculty and students addressed issues, over proposed cuts and faculty salaries. both classes and student services like registration have been canceled tomorrow. the faculty's contract ended last june. highway 1 is open again in san mateo county after a deadly accident closed both directions for hours. happened just before 3:30 a.m. on highway 1 south of pacifica. chp officers say a driver lost control and was ejected from their vehicle. this just in to the abc 7 newsroom. east bay municipal district have voted 7-0 to suspend fines for residents who use too much water in the drought.

east bay mudd's excess fines got a lot of attention because it was the first supplier in california to limit household use and disclose the names of violators. residents we talked with had mixed reaction to the fees before today's vote. >> i think people in the east bay are conscious of the importance of saving water so perhaps they'll do okay. we could -- could we try it for a bhiel and see if the water consumption goes up significantly? >> i think there should be a penalty. it keeps people's conscientious up. >> the fines will be suspended aefktive may 3rd. happening now, the santa clara water district board of directors is meeting and expected to decide whether it will reduce water dovgs goals. customers are currently being asked to reduce their water usage by 30%. that reduction could be cut in half for the rest of the year. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4, a new plan to help south bay part-time workers find a little more money, this as the governor from another state tries to lure bay area businesses away.

slumping iphone sales are to blame for a disappointing earnings report revealed by apple. the tech company says quarterly revenue fell for the first time in more than a decade, earnings missed projections by 10 cents a share. right now apple stock is down $8 a share in after-hours trading. intel announced it will lay off 296 employees working at its santa clara headquarters. the employees will receive notices this wreak. their jobs will end the end of may. employees will receive six weeks of pay, six months of health insurance and also 269 layoffs will occur at its fullsome location. they announced a plan to cut 12,000 jobs overall. as san jose is considering a new $15 minimum wage by 2019, community groups have gathered signatures to put in an initiative on the november ballot giving workers more hours. >> david louie is live at city hall where the petitions are being verified. >> reporter: it's a coalition of

labor, religious and community group that's want to advance a new idea here at san jose city hall that could help low wage workers. they want to see workers' hours boosted in order to keep them from working multiple jobs to sue fort their families. employees at the city clerk's office had no problem checking 30,000 signatures. the initiative says the employers have to give more hours before agd part-timers. >> it should be five days a week. otherwise, not even $15 an hour won't be enough if you don't work all the hours you can to bring enough money to your family. >> reporter: all haund dra meha is a jingle three. her job pays $12 an hour but the hours are insufficient to pay for food and rent for her son and two daughters. >> every week it jumps up and down. sometimes 10, 12 hours. other weeks maybe 15 or like last week was only 8 hours. >> what happened with part-time

workers is if i can only get a few hours here, i have to go get another job and get a few hour there's. and then i have to go to another job and get a few hour there's. if you have lots of people in the community doing that, it destabilizes the whole community. >> reporter: the president and ceo of the san jose silicon valley chamber of commerce warns there's a onside to the plan. >> our concern is you start forcing a smaller number of employees to have more hours and those opportunities for teen employment go down or go away. >> reporter: this comes at a time when florida's governor is going to be in california next week to entice businesses to move. >> ready to leave california? go to florida instead. no state income tax and governor scott has cut regulations. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. well, if you're looking for a job or know someone is, the latest abc 7 job journal hire event takes place tomorrow in sunnyvale. employers from many different fields will be ready to hire.

greater than just a few huth hundredths of an inch, at the bay a little more perhaps over a tenth of an inch at fairfield and concord. on we go, looking at lows tonight under increasingly cloudy skies. a little on the mild side with lows mainly in the low 50s, although he inlands lows will drop into the 40s. then tomorrow's highs will range from upper 50s at the coast to mid-60s around the bay to upper 60s inland. but we have some warmer weather coming our way and i mean much warmer. let's start with saturday as we have a nice offshore flow developing. a warm weekend, saturdays highs inland 80s. the sunday the low to mid-90s inland, 70s on the coast and temperatures dropping off just a couple of degrees monday. we've got three very warm days coming our way. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. notice how quickly it warms up through the weekend but how

reporting after fires that have broken out at that building here at mission and 22nd. this shell of a burn-out building has become the symbol for a slew of concerns in the mission. it was a scene of a fire last night. today is it's the backdrop for the announcement of a planned city ordinance aimed at fire safety. >> we know that many of these buildings do not have operative smoke alarms. we need to make sure that there are smoke alarms in every room where someone is living. >> reporter: activists began raising safety concerns after massive fires here and at other buildings in the mission displaced dozens of residents last year. since then, fire inospikt other and others have been pushed to do more. a group representing rental property owners also agree was this proposed city law but says sometimes it's tough to inspect safety equipment. >> we're also trying to acknowledge their privacy issues. a lot of tenants don't want the building owner in inspecting the smoke alarm every month.

>> reporter: some mission residents went after the fire department in particular. >> for six months we've been asking the fire commission to come out here to the mission, finally they're coming out tomorrow night. >> reporter: a fire department spokesman says they welcome the suggested changes and cooperated with this new ordinance. >> i think they have been cooperative, but i think what we want is more than cooperation. we want proactive steps. >> reporter: a fire department spokesman says they'll be introducing several proactive fire prevention steps at tomorrow's fire commission meeting in the mission. >> the community will have a chance to weigh in tomorrow evening at the fire commission meeting in the mission district. we are posting details on where and when the meeting willing held at abc 7 news.com. there was an accident involving a school bus this morning in los angeles. take a look. there's a railroad track crossing arm sticking out of the side of a bus. the arm and some broken glass ended up on the lap of one student but no one was hurt.

try to wrestle for the last delegates needed in this presidential contest. it's going to be really exciting. >> we'll have results on tonight's primaries for you as soon as they start coming in on air and online. the secret service locked down the white house today after a man jumped the fence at a government building nearby. agents sealed the white house and cleared tourists from the area this afternoon. the man jumped the fence outside the old executive office building across the street from the white house. he is not in custody. agents lifted the lock swroun at 4:30. johnny manziel is expected to surrender to authorities this week now he's been officially indicted on an assault charge by a texas grand jury. manziel faces one misdemeanor count related to an incident and his ex-girlfriend in january. if convicted he could face a year in jail and a $4,000 fine. he's now out of pro football. the cleveland browns cut him last month. his agents and endorsers have dropped him as well. a state lawmaker from menlo

park wants to get tough jurors who misuse social media or the internet during trials. assemblyman rich gordon has introduced legislation that would authorize judges in some cases to fine jurors up to $1,500 for social media and internet use violations. gordon says there is mounting concern about jurors using their smartphones, particularly in technology-rich california. >> the problem with that is it can lead to a mistrial. we've seen that happen across the country where verdicts have been tossed out, trials have had to be redone. >> a 2011 state law made improper electronic or wireless communication or research by a jury punishable by contempt which could lead to jail time. still to come on abc 7 news at 4, new legislation is aimed at the anti-lgbt laws. what one lawmaker wants to do to keep public money out of those states. >> reporter: i'm spencer christian from our east bay hills camera, calm conditions now and a mainly clear sky. but that's about to change.

>> announcer: san rafael. south bay. pleasanton and all the bay area. this is abc 7 news. a whale of a job is now finished. this 3,000-pound sculpture has under gone a massive restoration. this is time lapse video of the delicate work fina has just made its way back to its home at the uc berkeley hall of science. amy hollyfield has a look at the journey. >> she's finally home, pulling into the hall of science after a six-week-long absence. the man with the zijt honor of giving fina the whale a ride said it was a bit of a nerve-racking assignment. >> especially up to berkeley. it's up around all those tight corners and everything. all the people. just careful. >> reporter: the 50-foot-long fiberglass whale had to be haulded to berkeley from richmond where she underwent some repairs.

>> people love her so much. when she started getting a little worn-out, we put out the word that we needed help. and hundreds of people responded. and we raised a lot of money to get her fixed, and she's going to be here for another 40 years. >> reporter: here is a picture of what fina is usually doing, letting children crawl all over her in the plaza outside of lawrence hall. she's so loved by children the first thing the driver did after delivering her was take a picture for his grandchildren. >> i thought it was neat. i love this kind of stuff. >> she's been here for 40 years. i've been here for a little more than that. my children grew up crawling on that whale. she's part of the community. >> reporter: now for part two of this tricky operation, moving her into place. not easy considering she weighs 3,000 pounds. they're happy she made it here safely. traveling down the interstate had everyone nervous. tomorrow morning at 9:30 there will be a ceremony open to the public and then children can start crawling on her again and

welcome her home. here is a good question. can you trust the peer reviews that you read on the internet? e-commerce retailer amazon is going after five companies it accuses of selling fraudulent positive reviews. >> last year seven on your side investigated companies that pay for the positive reviews. michael finney joins us with an update. >> i told you about this last year. this really raised a stink actually last year. i told you 7 on your side producer was able to get hired to write positive reviews about a product she had never, ever drived. well, amazon's lawsuit accuses five defendants of using deception to trick customers into purchasing substandard products. the lawsuit accused the companies of false advertising, trademark infringement and of violating both federal and washington state consumer protection acts. here are four of the companies sued, paid book reviews.org, amazon verified reviews.com,

amazon reviews stardom and review connections.com. they do not have active websites at this time. now, we did reach out to the fifth defendant buy amazon reviews.info for comment but did not hear back. u.s. investigators are looking into automaker mitsubishi for possibly falsifying mileage data. they admitted to doing that to 600,000 vehicles sold in japan. federal regulators want to know if the same thing happened in the u.s. there's no evidence so far of that happening. a new survey reveals that passengers are more satisfied with airline customer service than a year ago. overall they received a satisfaction index of 72 out of 100, the highest level since 1994. analysts say savings from lower fuel prices are being passed on to passengers, and that has meant increased satisfaction.

cranberries. . >> music may give language skills a boot to babies. babies who listen to a waltz-like rhythm and then tapped out the beats with their parents had improved processing of music patterns and speech sound. a new study finds online ads of e-cigarettes are very influential to the teenagers. cdc says middle school students who see online ads are three times more at risk to start using e-cigarettes compared to those who haven't seen the ads. according to tech times, electronic cigarette ads use many of the same themes used to sell traditional cigarettes. some shampoos and lotions contain caffeine and promise to keep men's hair thick and full. but real-world tests are rare in those that have been done and show a modest effect. they found that caffeine did overstimulate the hair follicle but more studies need to be done. from the nasdaq, i'm jane king. here's to your health. you want to be on tv, coming up next, a new miniseries coming

prohibits transgender people from using bathrooms that don't correspond to their birth gender. scott wiener's proposal would also ban the city from contracting or purchasing from companies in any state with discriminatory lgbt laws. >> it will spread to more states unless we take a very, very strong position that there will be economic pain if you do this. >> you can see how literally i have to sew every single like inch of this perfectly. >> in the late 1970s, gay activist harvey milk told his friend gilbert baker to create a

symbol that would stand out in their community. >> so i thought, we need a flag. we're a tribe. we're a global people. and the rainbow was immediate. >> baker is the creator of the rainbow flag and in 1978 this flag was one of two that went up on market street at u.n. plaza. his story is one soon to be told in an abc miniseries created by the same people behind the movie "milk". >> when the series starts in 1971 and goes all the way to 2013, it incorporates the women's movement, the civil rights movement and peace movement and takes us to marriage equality. >> i think it's just a time to investigate some other stories that happened at the same time or simultaneously. >> those include the story of roma guy who will be played by marylou ease parker and her wife diane jones portrayed by rachel griffith. both founded the woman's building. >> all the diversity of women because we're rich and we're poor, we're gay, we're straight,

bus crash in san francisco in just six months. >> back in november, a double-decker bus crashed in union square injuring 20 people. still no official cause of the crash. good evening. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm dan ashley. to the other big story tonight, the release of more offensive text messages from inside the san francisco police department. a former officer is at the center of this scandal. the police chief says the situation makes him sick to his stomach. vic lee is live at the police department tonight with more on this. vic? >> reporter: dan, tonight we see the contents of offensive text messages at the core of the scandal. tonight we also know how many cases, criminal cases, the public twender is reviewing. cases that may be stained by the scandal. the next messages seized from officer jason lie's personal cell phone are offensive. they disparage african-americans. no race is left out. indian immigrants and hispanics.
